24 Jul 13. The MoD has awarded a £45m maintenance contract for the Armed Forces’ Bowman radio that will secure up to 300 British defence jobs. The contract awarded to General Dynamics UK to provide essential support for troops across the globe who use Bowman, will secure 150 jobs at the company’s site in Oakdale, South Wales. The other 150 jobs will be sustained across the supply chain. Wincanton in Bicester, Excelis in Basingstoke and DRS in Farnham are among the larger companies who will benefit as well as Small and Medium sized Enterprises including Cablescan in Brough and AWE Electronics in Staffordshire.

18 Jul 13. KBR has been awarded a $134m contract by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Europe District to construct the facilities necessary to support Europe’s first land-based ballistic missile defense system at Romania’s Deveselu Air Base. The Aegis Ashore Missile Defense System, located on a 269-acre site, will make a substantial contribution to provide protection for NATO European territories, including Romania. This will be the world’s first operational Aegis Ashore installation, which is a land-based variant of the Navy’s shipboard Aegis Air and Ballistic Missile Defense System. Under this contract, KBR will re-locate a four-story radar deckhouse structure from the East Coast of the United States to Romania. In Romania, KBR will build all of the various facilities and infrastructure required to support the Aegis Ashore weapon system including roads, support buildings, communications, security and utilities.

19 Jul 13. Saab has received an order for the delivery of explosive training artillery ammunition. The order amounts to approximately MSEK 100 and production and delivery will take place during 2013 and 2014. The order will be carried out by Saab’s Swiss subsidiary Saab Bofors Dynamics Switzerland (SBDS) and includes the manufacture and delivery of explosive training artillery grenades. The scope of work consists of the conversion of live rounds into training rounds with SBDS performing the technical alteration, the filling of the target marking and explosive components as well as the final assembling.

23 Jul 13. SCS, a Cohort plc company, has won a contract to deliver technical support including airworthiness to the UK MOD’s Lightning Project Team (LPT). Valued at over £4m, the contract will run for two years from July 2013, with an option of two six-month extensions. SCS’s support work will ensure that F-35 Joint Strike Fighter (Lightning II) is delivered into service as a safe and effective aircraft. To demonstrate the F-35 Lightning II’s airworthiness to the UK authorities, the LPT requires independent expert technical support provided by Suitably Qualified and Experienced Persons (SQEP) to reinforce certification, acceptance and integration. This work will be delivered under the new contract, through the technical support of up to 25 SCS SQEP staff across a wide range of disciplines

18 Jul 13. Lockheed Martin Corp., Lockheed Martin Aeronautics Co., Fort Worth, Texas, is being awarded a $70,358,000 modification to a previously awarded advance acquisition contract (N00019-13-C-0008) to provide long lead-time parts, material and components required for the delivery of seven Conventional Take Off and Landing F-35 Lightning II Joint Strike Fighter aircraft and one Short Take-Off Vertical Landing F-35 Lightning II Joint Strike Fighter aircraft for the government of Italy. Work will be performed in Fort Worth, Texas, and is expected to be completed in February 2014. International Partner contract funds in the amount of $70,358,000 are being obligated on this award, none of which will expire at the end of the current fiscal year. The Naval Air Systems Command, Patuxent River, Md., is the contracting authority.
