22 Jul 12. Combat Boots: New Range. The MoD notified (22 Jul 12) contract signature worth £81m between three companies for the supply of a new range of brown combat boots, to replace the black and desert combat boots in current use. Depending on location and military employment, troops will have the choice of five different boots: Desert Combat, Desert Patrol, Temperate Combat, Patrol and Cold Wet Weather. The improved boots have been developed to match the multi-terrain pattern clothing and will be made in different width fittings (to accommodate female and male feet).
Comment: The new boots have been chosen after months of trials involving 2,000 troops serving in Canada, Cyprus, Kenya and the UK. A major advance is that boots designed for women will now be available. A sad reflection on the once-famous British boot/shoe industry is that the three companies selected are based in Germany, Spain and Turkey.

27 Jul 12. Trident: Support Contract Signed. The MoD signed (27 Jul 12) a 15-year contract with ABL Alliance to provide support for the Trident Strategic Weapon System at the RN Armament Depot at Coulport and at the Strategic Weapon Support Building at Faslane. The facilities at Coulport and Faslane are both part of HM Naval Base Clyde. ABL Alliance is an industrial alliance of AWE (as prime contractor), Babcock and Lockheed Martin UK Strategic Systems. All three contractors “have extensive experience of supporting the UK’s independent nuclear deterrent, gained over many years”. The value of the contract has not been made public.
Comment: Work to overhaul the RN’s four SSBN started in February 2002. HMS VIGILANT was handed back to the RN on 21 Jul 12 following a £350m, three-year overhaul. Work has already started on the last of the boats, HMS VENGEANCE, and this should be completed in 2015. (Source: DNA DEFENCE NEWS ANALYSIS, Issue 12/30, 30 July 12)
