13 Feb 25. The Ministry of Defence (MoD) has issued a Voluntary Transparency Notice (VTN) regarding its intention to award a £58m contract to BAE Systems Bofors AB for the long-term in-service support of the Archer Artillery System. According to the notice, the contract will ensure maintenance, repair, training, and configuration management for the system, which forms part of the Interim 155 Capability Project. The MoD, via the notice, confirmed that BAE Systems Bofors AB—the original designer and sole manufacturer of the Archer system—will be the only supplier capable of fulfilling the contract due to its ownership of the essential design, technology, and specialist tooling required for ongoing support. The contract is expected to be formally awarded by Q2 2026 and will run for seven years, with two additional one-year renewal options. The Archer Artillery System is a highly mobile, self-propelled 155mm howitzer, providing rapid-fire capability and advanced long-range precision strike for British troops. 13 Feb 25. ISTEC wins major contract from Babcock to supply weapons integration solutions for 53 Supacat Jackal 3 Extenda Variants. ISTEC Services Limited, a British company with 36 years of operationally proven experience in the design, manufacture and supply of complex weapon integration solutions and smoke discharger systems (SDS) for military platforms, has recently won a contract to supply the Universal Gun Mounts (UGM), traverse control mechanism and swing arm systems, for 53 Supacat Jackal 3 Extenda variants being built in partnership with Babcock.  Production will begin in early 2025.

 

07 Feb 25. Saab has secured a contract, with a value of approximately Skr250m ($23m), from an unnamed Nato member to supply its 9AIR command, control, communications, computers and intelligence (C4I) system.  The booking of this order was registered in the fourth quarter of 2024, marking a milestone for Saab’s Air Defence and Surveillance division.   The 9AIR C4I system is designed to offer users control over air and space domains, enhancing situational awareness and communication capabilities that are essential for making timely and effective decisions in combat scenarios.  The system has a range of options, from the full-scale 9Air Tactical Operation Command and Control System (9Air TOCCS) to the more compact 9Air Compact C2, which offers a simplified Link16 solution.   (Source: airforce-technology.com)

 

12 Feb 25. Serco, the international provider of services to governments, has been awarded a £35m subcontract from CACI via prime contractor, Five Rivers Analytics, LLC to continue to provide Satellite Control Network Tracking Station Operations, Remote Site and Missions Partner Support (STORMS) to the US Space Force (USSF) at the Telemetry and Command Station (TCS) in Oakhanger, Hampshire, UK for a further five years until 2029. Serco has a long history at TCS, having provided operational support since the late 1970s and we have been providing the operations, maintenance and site services at TCS Oakhanger since 2003, when it was originally part of the UK Ministry of Defence’s Skynet programme.  The Oakhanger site is owned by the MOD and is the busiest ground station in the USSF Satellite Control Network supporting over 30,000 successful contacts annually, whilst continuously performing above an operational performance success standard of 99%.

10 Feb 25. The Ministry of Defence (MOD) is expected to finalise a contract for the acquisition of additional Aster 30 air defence missiles for the Royal Navy, following the successful conclusion of negotiations. Maria Eagle, Minister of State for Defence, confirmed the imminent contract placement today. Eagle explained that the contract would be placed through the Organisation for Joint Armament Cooperation (OCCAR), the multinational procurement agency responsible for coordinating European defence projects. “Negotiations to purchase Aster 30 have concluded, and a contract placement, via the multinational procurement agency OCCAR, is expected imminently,” she said. The Aster 30 missiles are designed to protect ships against aerial threats, including fast jets, drones, and incoming missiles. They are deployed on the Royal Navy’s Type 45 destroyers as part of the Sea Viper missile system, which forms the backbone of the fleet’s air defence capability. Thales – New investment in Royal Navy fleet communications to boost jobs. £250m upgrade to naval communications will support more than 100 high-skilled UK jobs, delivering on the Government’s Plan for Change. More than 100 high-skilled jobs will be secured in the UK thanks to a new £250m contract to upgrade the communications systems of the Royal Navy’s warship and submarine fleet. Jobs at Thales sites in Portsmouth, Plymouth, Crawley, Reading and Bristol will be supported after the company was awarded the largest-ever contract for the provision of naval communication capabilities. This large-scale investment helps to support the objectives of the upcoming Defence Industrial Strategy – to drive investment to UK-based businesses and boost defence jobs in every nation and region of the country. The 10-year long contract for Maritime Communications Capability Support (MCCS), awarded by Defence Equipment & Support, will upgrade the Royal Navy’s internal and external fleet communications, strengthening the UK’s continuous at sea deterrent and supporting global operations. 10 Feb 25. Elbit Systems Ltd. has been selected by a European country to provide a Joint National Digital Fire Command Center (JNDFC) and to integrate the customer’s strategic and tactical firing platforms to the JNDFC. Under the new contracts, worth a total amount of approximately $100m, Elbit will deliver its cutting-edge multi-domain digital fires warfare capabilities at a joint level for the center, seamlessly integrating its Command, Control, Communications, Computers, Intelligence, Surveillance, and Reconnaissance (C4ISR) Digital Fires Suite, including Torch-X Fires, E-LynX Software Defined Radio (SDR) radios, and the GRX-8000 High-Capacity Line-of-Sight resilient Microwave Communication system. Additionally, Elbit will digitize an artillery battalion and fully integrate it into the command center.

 

11 Feb 25. Indra Wins the Contract to Equip the German Air Force With a Space Surveillance Radar.

  • This system will reinforce its capacity to protect military and civilian satellites and space assets in low orbits from the risk of impact with debris orbiting without control and other approaching satellites that could damage or neutralize them
  • Indra will deliver one of the most advanced space debris detection radars in the world, which will be an improved version of the S3TSR surveillance radar currently in operation in Spain
  • The contract covers the production, integration and delivery of the radar, as well as the provision of operational capabilities from deployable working positions and technical and logistical services

Following the German Parliament’s approval, Indra has signed a contract with the National Procurement Office (BAAINBw) of the German Armed Forces (Bundeswehr) to provide the country’s air force, the Luftwaffe, with a last generation radar capable of detecting objects in low space orbits. The system will protect satellites in service from potential impacts with debris from other missions orbiting at high speed in an uncontrolled manner that could damage or disable them. It will also help protect them by monitoring any attempts by other satellites to approach them to jeopardize their missions or gather information about them. Indra, through its German subsidiary, and as a flagship company in the aerospace and defence sectors, was invited to take part in this tender, which it won thanks to its space radar’s proven maturity, its high performance and its modular and flexible design enabling it to progressively increase its capabilities. 11 Feb 25. The Direction Générale de l’Armement (DGA), the French defence procurement agency, announced on 10 February that it had ordered 530 Serval Appui (Support) SCORPION vehicles on 31 December 2024. The vehicles are planned to be delivered from the end of 2025 to 2031. Ninety-seven Serval Véhicule Blindé Multi-Rôle Léger (VBMR-L) 4×4 light multirole armoured vehicles will be ordered in addition to the 530 vehicles under the same contract, which is worth over EUR1bn (USD1.03bn). Work will be carried out by KNDS France at its sites in Satory, Bourges, and Roanne; Texelis in Limoges; MBDA in Plessis Robinson and Bourges; and CS Group in Plessis Robinson and Toulon. In line with France’s Loi de Programmation Militaire (LPM) 2024–30 military funding programme approved on 13 July 2023, the order for 530 vehicles is part of the effort to put French Army units under armour and integrate them into the SCORPION transformation programme to command, support, and move in the zone of contact, operating at the combined arms brigade or divisional level. Three versions of Serval will be developed and produced: défense sol-air d’accompagnement (accompanying surface-to-air defence: DSA), lutte anti-drones (counter-unmanned aerial vehicle: LAD), and nœuds de communication tactiques (tactical communication nodes: NCT). The Serval DSA vehicle will be equipped with a turret from MBDA France allowing the employment of the Mistral missile under armour and also includea self-defence weapon in the turret. The LAD version will be equipped with a radar, a radio frequency detection system, a fire-control system, and a remote-controlled weapon station with a 30×113 mm cannon firing special ammunition. 11 Feb 25. Netherlands buys L3Harris AN/PRC-167, 163, and 160 radios for its Foxtrot programme.  The Netherlands Ministry of Defence (MoD) is purchasing L3Harris AN/PRC-167, AN/PRC-163, and AN/PRC-160 portable radios for operational units, an MoD spokesperson told Janes on 7 February. While detailing the three types of L3Harris radios in this batch of Foxtrot programme equipment, the MoD spokesperson did not reveal the number of radios to be delivered or cost of the purchase. The radios are expected to be delivered in 2026 along with the system’s software and integration services, according to a 6 February MoD press release. Foxtrot is a major digitisation and modernisation programme for the Netherlands Armed Forces, with a key component being the replacement of legacy communication systems and enhancement of battlefield management systems (BMSs). The programme’s combat net radio (CNR) requirement, called the Military Transmission Building Block (MTBB) project, calls for radios for approximately 8,000 vehicles, 3,500 military personnel, 135 vessels, 170 aircraft, and helicopters, the MoD said in November 2023. The first “large delivery” is intended for the 44th Battalion Task Group of the Royal Netherlands Army in Havelte as well as other operational units including Commando Corps (The Korps Commandotroepen: KCT), the special forces unit of the Royal Netherlands Army, Helicopter Command (Defensie Helikopter Commando), and the Royal Netherlands Marine Corps (Korps Mariniers). 13 Feb 25. Finnish Minister of Defence Antti Häkkänen and Slovenian Minister of Defence Borut Sajovic signed a Letter of Intent between Finland and Slovenia on support for the procurement of 8×8 Armoured Modular Vehicles (AMV) in Brussels on 13 February, 2025. The letter of intent between the Ministry of Defence of Slovenia and the Ministry of Defence of Finland was prepared jointly by the ministries.   With the intent, the participating nations state their shared willingness to cooperate, and that Slovenia will receive Finland’s support for the procurement of 8×8 Armoured Vehicles from Patria.  Patria AMV XP 8×8 is a market leading, state-of-the-art, modular and robust armoured vehicle providing superior fire power, protection, and mobility. Patria AMV XP 8×8 has already been successfully selected to ongoing vehicle projects in Slovakia and Japan.

 

12 Feb 25. Saab has received an order from BAE Systems Hägglunds for the sighting and fire control system UTAAS (Universal Tank and Anti-Aircraft System) for Combat Vehicle 90. The order value is approximately SEK 700m. BAE Systems Hägglunds in Örnsköldsvik, Sweden, developer and producer of the Combat Vehicle 90 (CV90), has placed an order with Saab for the UTAAS (Universal Tank and Anti-Aircraft System) sighting and fire control system. 10 Feb 25. Theon Receives New Orders Totaling EUR53m, With Embedded New Options of an Additional EUR95.5M and Participates in the German Future Soldier Program. Theon International Plc (THEON) announces new order intake totalling €53m so far in 2025, coming from 12 countries in total. These orders further add to THEON’s already increased soft backlog of c. €650m as of 31 December 2024. The main part of these new orders (including the sizeable option) comes from the German Future Soldier Program (IdZ), further strengthening THEON presence in one of its core markets, Germany. 10 Feb 25. French Army orders 530 new Serval vehicles. The initial deliveries of Serval vehicles are expected for delivery from 2025 to 2031. The French Ministry of Defence (MoD) has confirmed that an order placement for procurement of 530 Serval 4×4 wheeled armoured vehicles for the French Army.  This purchase, exceeding €1bn ($1.03bn), is a part of the SCORPION programme, which aims to revolutionise the French military’s capabilities. The programme encompasses the production and supply of the GRIFFON, JAGUAR, and SERVAL vehicles, as well as the modernisation of the LECLERC Main Battle Tank (MBT).  It includes the integration of drones and robots into the combat system, enhanced communication with infantry, and the management of various sensors.  Initial deliveries of Serval vehicles are predicted for delivery from 2025 to 2031.  (Source: army-technology.com)

AeroVironment (AV), through its wholly owned subsidiary Arcturus UAV, has been awarded a contract by the Danish Defence Acquisition and Logistics Organisation (DALO) with a contract ceiling value of $181m to deliver the JUMP® 20 medium uncrewed aircraft system (UAS) to the Danish Armed Forces. This 10-year program of record will equip the Danish Army with JUMP 20 systems to enhance intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance (ISR) operations, reinforcing AV’s position as a global leader in advanced autonomous solutions. JUMP 20 is a vertical take-off and landing (VTOL), fixed-wing UAS with 13+ hours of endurance and an operational range of 185 km (115 mi). Runway independent, the system is easily storable and transportable, and can autonomously launch and land at speed without personnel intervention, making it ideal for on-the-move operations. 14 Feb 25.  HENSOLDT has been awarded a contract extension for the Eurofighter Mk1 radar worth approximately 350m euros. Following approval by the German and Spanish Ministries of Defence, further development tasks were commissioned by Airbus Defence and Space. The ECRS Mk1 project (Eurofighter Common Radar System Mark 1) is the next-generation Eurofighter radar that is to be fielded by the air forces of Germany and Spain. This E-Scan radar will enhance the capabilities of the Eurofighter, which Airbus produces for the German and Spanish air forces, in air-to-air and air-to-ground operations and also equip it with electronic warfare capabilities. The radar was developed by a consortium consisting of the German HENSOLDT Sensors GmbH and the Spanish Indra Sistemas S.A. Together with Airbus Defence and Space, the companies form the industrial structure that develops, certifies and manufactures the state-of-the-art military technology. The contract extension includes the delivery of test systems for the German radar test aircraft Airbus A320 D-ATRA as well as revisions to the Mk1 Step 1 radar system. The further development of the devices represents a technological leap forward in order to bring the operational capabilities of the weapon system to bear with this E-Scan radar in a future-oriented manner. The order ensures the future and expandability and thus the operational effectiveness of the Mk1 Step 1 radar and future steps. The scope of services also includes an initial development phase for ECRS Mk1 Step 2. The associated e-scan radar capability with the task-based management of the Airbus Defence and Space Attack & Identify system will significantly reduce the workload of pilots in the Eurofighter cockpit and further increase operational effectiveness.

 

11 Feb 25. Netherlands signs for new Pilatus trainer aircraft. The Netherlands has signed for new Pilatus PC-7 MKX turboprop trainer aircraft four months after selecting the type in October 2024 to replace its ageing PC-7s from the same Swiss manufacturer. Announced by the Dutch Minister of Defence (MoD) on 7 February, the deal covers eight PC-7 MKX aircraft and four flight simulators to replace 13 PC-7 aircraft that have been in Royal Netherlands Air Force (RNLAF) service since 1988. In selecting Pilatus Aircraft, the MoD said the near like-for-like replacement means that the existing personnel and physical infrastructure can be used, thus saving money. 12 Feb 25. Rheinmetall to supply C-390 flight simulators to the Royal Netherlands Air Force. Embraer has contracted with Rheinmetall to supply C-390 flight simulators to the Royal Netherlands Air Force. The Düsseldorf, Germany-based technology group will be furnishing a Full Flight and Mission Simulator as well as a Cargo Handling Station Trainer. Production of the modern simulators will begin immediately, with delivery scheduled for the end of 2026. The order value is in the double-digit m Euro range and was booked in the first quarter of 2025. Rheinmetall C-390 simulators are used to train aircraft crews and ground personnel for the Embraer C-390 transport aircraft. The Full Flight and Mission Simulator (FFMS) meets the Level D standard and satisfies all international qualification standards. It enables crews to be trained under normal and emergency conditions, military operations to be practised and more than 350 malfunctions to be carried out. Moreover, it is easy to maintain and offers a high level of user comfort. The Dutch model is the first to use a new image generator. The Cargo Handling Station Trainer (CHST) enables comprehensive training of relating to cargo handling procedures for flight crews, loadmasters and other users. It uses the latest visual display technology to provide an interior view of the cargo compartment and an exterior view of the entire aircraft.  For Rheinmetall, the FFMS ordered as part of the C-390 programme is the third major order worldwide and the second in Europe. Prior to the Dutch armed forces, Embraer itself and the Portuguese Air Force had already acquired an FFMS. The modern Embraer C-390 transport aircraft made its maiden flight on 3 February 2015 and is in use or being introduced in Brazil, Portugal, Hungary, Austria, the Netherlands, the Czech Republic and South Korea. In view of the growing number of C-390 customers in Europe, Embraer and Rheinmetall are considering establishing a C-390 training centre in Europe to provide even better training support to existing and future C-390 customers. Currently, there is an Embraer C-390 training centre in the Brazilian state of São Paulo with an FFMS and a CHST, where Brazilian, Portuguese and Hungarian C-390 crews currently undergo their training.

 

11 Feb 25. Space Norway Orders THOR 8 Telecom Satellite from Thales Alenia Space.  Space Norway, Northern Europe’s leading satellite operator, and Thales Alenia Space, a joint venture between Thales (67%) and Leonardo (33%), today announced they have signed a contract for the supply of a new communications satellite, THOR 8. From its orbital slot at 1° west, the THOR 8 communications satellite will meet the growing demand for connectivity and ensure continuity of Space Norway’s broadcasting service over a geographic coverage area from the Nordics to Central and Eastern Europe. THOR 8 will provide top-tier satellite connectivity for broadcasters and high-speed internet access for fixed and mobile infrastructure (maritime, terrestrial and aeronautical services) in Europe, the Middle East and Africa. With a launch mass of 4 metric tons, the satellite will be built on Thales Alenia Space’s Spacebus 4000B2 platform and will operate in the Ka and Ku frequency bands. As prime contractor, Thales Alenia Space is responsible for the design, manufacture, testing and delivery of the satellite. 12 Feb 25. Kord Group has signed a US$7m contract to provide its remote technology to the US Army. Under the (AU$11m) indefinite delivery, indefinite quantity (IDIQ) contract, Kord will equip American soldiers with their Rifle Accessory Control Unit (RACU) system, which acts as a centralised point of control for all weapon-mounted and body-worn electronic devices. The contract was signed on 12 February at Capitol Hill. The remote technology is expected to significantly benefit soldier performance, lethality and situational awareness, said Dr Peter Moran, group managing director at Kord. 07 Feb 25. The Missile Defense Agency (MDA) today awarded Lockheed Martin (NYSE: LMT) a follow-on development contract for the Terminal High Altitude Area Defense (THAAD) Weapon System. This indefinite delivery/indefinite quantity (IDIQ) contract supports the continued development of the THAAD Weapon System’s capabilities over the next five years – with two options to extend – for a period of performance of up to 10 years. The contract has a ceiling value of $2.8bn if both options are exercised. This development advances THAAD’s capabilities against increasingly complex missile threats. (Source: ASD Network)

 

12 Feb 25. Northrop Grumman Corporation (NYSE: NOC) secures two significant contracts totaling $1.4bn to advance air and missile defense capabilities for the U.S. Army and Poland. These awards reinforce Northrop Grumman’s position as a leader in advanced integrated battle management solutions, driving innovation through artificial intelligence and model-based systems engineering to strengthen global security.

  • The U.S. Army’s Aviation Missile Technology Consortium awarded Northrop Grumman a $481 m, five-year contract to expand software development for the Integrated Battle Command System (IBCS). This includes $347.6 m dedicated to Poland’s defense initiatives and $133.7m for the U.S. military and the Guam Defense System. Under this award, Northrop Grumman will lead collaborative efforts with specialists in artificial intelligence (AI) and model-based systems engineering to boost the software development capacity of IBCS, and will integrate Polish sensors and the United Kingdom’s Common Anti-Air Modular Missile system (CAMM).
  • Under a second contract, valued at $899.6m, Northrop Grumman will deliver IBCS as the single command and control system for Poland’s WISŁA medium-range and NAREW short-range air defense programs.

 

13 Feb 25. Teledyne FLIR Defense Inc., Elkridge, Maryland, was awarded a $74,226,486 hybrid (cost-no-fee, cost-plus-fixed-fee and firm-fixed-price) contract to integrate sensors onto the M1135 Flat Bottom Hull Stryker. Bids were solicited via the internet with one received. Work will be performed in Elkridge, Maryland, with an estimated completion date of Feb. 2, 2029. Fiscal 2024 procurement, defense-wide funds and research, development, test and evaluation, Army funds in the amount of $16,813,554 were obligated at the time of the award. Army Contracting Command, Aberdeen Proving Ground, Maryland, is the contracting activity (W911SR-25-C-0012).

 

13 Feb 25. TurnOnGreen, Inc. (OTC:TOGI) (“TurnOnGreen” or the “Company”) continues its expansion in the defense sector with significant new contracts. Lockheed Martin Rotary and Mission Systems, Manassas, Virginia, was awarded a $114,162,885 cost-plus-incentive-fee modification to previously awarded contract N00024-20-C-6117 to exercise options for the Navy’s procurement of hardware to support sound navigation and ranging systems. Work will be performed in Manassas, Virginia (65%); Clearwater, Florida (32%); Syracuse, New York (2%); and Marion, Florida (1%), and is expected to be completed by May 2031. Fiscal 2025 other procurement (Navy) funds in the amount of $73,526,137 (64%); and fiscal 2025 shipbuilding and conversion (Navy) funds in the amount of $40,636,748 (36%), will be obligated at time of award and will not expire at the end of the current fiscal year. Redwire Corporation (NYSE: RDW), a leader in space infrastructure for the next generation space economy, announced today it has been awarded a contract by Orion Space Solutions to deliver a Mako spacecraft to support Tetra-6, a U.S. Space Force (USSF) Space Systems Command (SSC) mission. The Tetra-6 mission is a follow-on contract to the USSF/Air Force Research Laboratory (AFRL) Tetra-5 mission, for which Redwire is delivering two Mako spacecraft. The Mako spacecraft for the Tetra-5 and Tetra-6 missions will be the first satellite in geosynchronous orbit (GEO) to be refueled and demonstrate compatibility with multiple available refueling mechanisms. 07 Feb 25. Rolls-Royce Corp., Indianapolis, Indiana, is awarded a $167,383,203 firm fixed priced contract for production of 40 MT7 turboshaft engines, ancillary parts, installation kits, and a portable test tool inspection in support of the Ship to Shore Connector Program, Landing Craft, Air Cushion (LCAC), 100 Class craft. This contract includes options which, if exercised, would bring the cumulative value of this contract to $167,732,263. Work will be performed in Indianapolis, Indiana, and is expected to be completed by June 2028. If all options are exercised, work will continue through December 2028. Fiscal 2024 shipbuilding and conversion (Navy) funds in the amount of $68,866,108 (41%); fiscal 2023 shipbuilding and conversion (Navy) funds in the amount of $49,380,072 (30%); fiscal 2022 shipbuilding and conversion (Navy) funds in the amount of $31,437,024 (19%); fiscal 2025 other procurement (Navy) funds in the amount of $8,980,000 (5%); and fiscal 2024 other procurement (Navy) funds in the amount of $8,719,999 (5%), will be obligated at time of award, none of which will expire at the end of the current fiscal year. This contract was not competitively procured in accordance with 10 U.S. Code 3204(a)(1) as there is only responsible source, and no other type of property or services will satisfy the need of the agency. Xairos Systems, Inc. announces it has been selected by SpaceWERX for a Direct-to-Phase II contract, in the amount of $1.9m, focused on demonstrating a fusion PNT (position, navigation and timing) of quantum and optical synchronization of clock ensembles to address the most pressing challenges in the Department of the Air Force (DAF). Working with partners Luminous Cyber Corporation and Eritek Inc., the team recently completed Preliminary Design Review (PDR). The Air Force Research Laboratory (AFRL) and SpaceWERX, the innovation arm of the U.S. Space Force and a unique division within AFWERX, have partnered to streamline the Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) and Small Business Technology Transfer (STTR) process by accelerating the small business experience through faster proposal-to-award timelines, changing the pool of potential applicants by expanding opportunities to small business and eliminating bureaucratic overhead by continually implementing process improvement changes in contract execution. 06 Feb 25. DoD/DSCA Notifies Congress of a Possible FMS of Design and Construction Services to Kuwait. The U.S. Department of Defense’s Defense Security Cooperation Agency (DSCA) has notified Congress that the Government of Kuwait has requested to buy services to support the procurement of maritime and land facilities at the Mohammed Al Ahmed Naval Base, other affiliated locations, the Ras Al Ard Naval Base for Onshore Logistics and an alternate logistics station in Kuwait, as well as construction of a headquarters complex. The following non-MDE items will be included: life cycle design; construction; project management; engineering studies; engineering services; technical support; facility and infrastructure assessments; surveys; planning; programming; design; acquisition; contract administration; construction management; logistics; other technical services; and other related elements of logistics and program support. The estimated total cost is $1.0bn. The principal contractor(s) will be determined from approved vendors, likely by competitive acquisitions. At this time, the U.S. Government is not aware of any offset agreement proposed in connection with this potential sale. 12 Feb 25. Babcock International Group (Babcock), the defence company, has been awarded a further contract by the UK Ministry of Defence (UK MOD) to boost its support to Ukraine through a 15-month extension to continue supporting urgent operational requirements for Ukraine’s military land assets. Babcock will support Ukraine’s armed forces by ensuring its vehicles, such as Challenger 2 tanks, are available for service.  Importantly, the business will share its engineering know-how by training the Ukrainian military to conduct the repairs in country, as well as managing the customer’s supply chain and spares.  Following an initial contract award in July 2023, this extension will see Babcock optimise its unrivalled knowledge of supporting military platforms and unique perspective on maintenance, repairs and overhaul. In June 2021, Babcock signed a Memorandum of Implementation with the Ministry of Defence of Ukraine and the UK Government and has been delivering technical and engineering support to Ukraine’s military from the wider region since July 2023.  Military assets that Babcock has been supporting over the last two years include platforms donated by the UK Ministry of Defence under the various tranches of financial and non-financial support provided by the UK.

 

12 Feb 25. BAE Systems has also been awarded a £14m contract, funded by Sweden and procured through the UK-administered International Fund for Ukraine, to repair Archer artillery systems. Working with Lancashire-based firm AMS, repairs of the Swedish-gifted Archer systems will be carried out in Ukraine with Ukrainian soldiers given technical training so they can maintain equipment for years to come. (Source: https://www.gov.uk/)

 

12 Feb 25. CEA Technologies – Australia announced a $272m investment to provide enhanced long-range radar systems to support Army’s long-range fires capability. The Australian government will invest an additional $272 m to bolster the local defence industry and create Australian jobs, with the procurement of up to 14 multi-mission phased array radars (MMPARs) for the Australian Army. These radars, to be manufactured by Canberra-based CEA Technologies, will enhance the Army’s long-range fires capabilities and provide more comprehensive monitoring of potential threats, all while contributing to the integration of a more focused and capable Defence Force. 16 Feb 25.   Galvion, a world leader in the design and manufacture of innovative head systems, power and data management solutions, and integrated soldier systems, announced the receipt of several recent orders from the Middle Eastern region for a total of 35,000 Baltskin® helmet systems. This announcement coincides with the IDEX exhibition taking place in Abu Dhabi, UAE, 17-21 February 2025. At the event, Galvion will be exhibiting at booth 14-C31. The 35,000 head systems ordered are split between two of Galvion’s Batlskin® helmet platforms: the Baltskin VIPER® and Baltskin PDxT™ variants. Galvion’s PDxT geometry was recently introduced to their commercial helmet portfolio under the name Batlskin Hellbender™.  Galvion is unable to disclose specific details related to all orders received, however a trusted regional partner of Galvion’s is amongst the most recent customers that has placed orders for over 100,000 helmets in the last 10 years for use by Armed Forces and security services in the region.

 

13 Feb 25. Leonardo DRS, Inc. (NASDAQ: DRS) announced today that it was awarded a contract to provide and integrate the latest Battle Management Systems (BMS) C4I hardware and software into new Royal Thailand Army combat vehicles. The total value of the award is more than $7m. The contract was awarded by the U.S. Army through the U.S. Government Grant Assistance program. Under the contract Leonardo DRS will provide its ruggedized C4I Battle Management System (BMS) hardware and is the lead integrator for the technology. The work includes integrating BMS software, cyber protection, network integration, training, and sustainment capability for newly acquired Stryker vehicles in the Royal Thailand Army. 07 Feb 25. India to procure Pinaka rockets. India’s Ministry of Defence (MoD) has awarded contracts to local companies to supply rockets for the Indian Army’s Pinaka Multi‐Barrel Rocket Launcher (MBRL). The MoD said on 6 February that it would procure the Pinaka Area Denial Munition (ADM) Type 1 and the Pinaka Pre-Fragmented High‐Explosive (PFHE) Mk-1 Enhanced rockets from Economic Explosives Limited (EEL) and Munitions India Limited (MIL) respectively. The contract is valued at INR101.4bn (USD1bn). However, the MoD did not specify the number of rockets that will be procured. According to the MoD, the procurements will enhance the Indian Army’s firepower by “enabling precise and long-range strikes”. The MoD added, “ADM Type-1 … has a specialised warhead to deliver a quantum of submunitions over a larger area targeting mechanised forces, vehicles, and personnel, thereby, denying specific areas to the enemy. Janes reported in January 2024 that the Indian Army had approved the procurement of the ADM Type 1 rocket – also known as dual-purpose improved conventional munition (DPICM) – after it passed a series of user trials. Janes also reported that user trials of the Pinaka Mk-1 Enhanced rocket had also been completed. According to Janes Weapons: Ammunition, the PFHE Pinaka Mk-1 Enhanced rocket weighs 277 kg. Its warhead weighs 100 kg and incorporates 20,500 units of 6 mm diameter tungsten balls that can create a lethal damage area of 12,000 m 2. 07 Feb 25. Australia has made its first $500m payment to the United States under the AUKUS nuclear submarine deal ahead of a meeting between their defence heads on Friday in Washington. Australian Defence Minister Richard Marles said the gesture showed Canberra is paying its way as a security partner. Marles will be the first foreign counterpart hosted by U.S. Defence Secretary Pete Hegseth since his confirmation in the role. 10 Feb 25. The Indian Ministry of Defence (MoD) has finalised a procurement agreement with Bharat Electronics Limited (BEL) for a series of electro optical fire control systems, EON-51.  The deal, valued at approximately Rs6.42bn ($73.39m), encompasses 28 units intended for installation and integration on board 11 new generation offshore patrol vessels and three cadet training ships.   This acquisition falls under the Buy (Indian-IDDM) category. (Source: naval-technology.com)

14 Feb 25. Aero India 2025: BEL secures IAF contract for stand-off glide munitions. India’s Bharat Electronics Limited (BEL) has secured an order from the Indian Air Force (IAF) to supply an unspecified number of Khagantak-243 munitions, a 300 kg-class airborne stand-off precision-guided glide bomb, the company told Janes on 11 February. Speaking at the Aero India 2025 show in Bangalore, a BEL official confirmed that the Khagantak-243 munition, which has been in development for more than a decade, is now complete and has recently secured a prototype and production contract. However, the value of the deal is undisclosed. Preparations are under way for initial flight tests, set to begin in mid-2025, followed by series production. The Khagantak-243 is initially scheduled to be tested on the IAF’s Su-30MKI fighter aircraft, with potential future tests on other platforms, including the MiG-29K. The Khagantak-243 is a stand-off glide munition developed collaboratively by JSR Dynamics and BEL. JSR Dynamics provides the body and control systems, while BEL supplies all electronics and guidance subsystems. The munition features a cylindrical body with swivel-type mid-body glide wings and five aft control surfaces, enabling a range of more than 140 km when launched from an altitude of 12,000 m. It is equipped with a Mk 81 general purpose blast-fragmentation warhead, containing 125 kg of explosive fill. BEL signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) with JSR Dynamics at Aero India 2019 for the development, production, and sales of weapons under the Indian government’s ‘Make in India’ initiative.  JSR Dynamics showcased the Khagantak-243 and Khagantak-306 at the Maharashtra MSME Defence Expo 2024. 13 Feb 25. The Japan Self-Defense Forces (JSDF) has ordered 17 CH-47 Block II Chinooks Extended Range to modernize its fleet, replacing some of its CH-4 J/A aircraft. The aircraft will be co-produced by Boeing and Kawasaki Heavy Industries (KHI). Boeing and KHI have delivered over a 100 Chinooks to the JSDF since the 1980s, making it one of the longest lasting and most successful license manufacturing programs in Japan.

 

10 Feb 25. Israel – Munitions, Guidance Kits, Fuzes, and Munitions Support. The State Department has approved a possible Foreign Military Sale to the Government of Israel of Munitions, Guidance Kits, Fuzes, and Munitions Support and related equipment for an estimated cost of $6.75bn. The Defense Security Cooperation Agency delivered the required certification notifying Congress of this possible sale today. The Government of Israel has requested to buy two thousand one hundred sixty-six (2,166) GBU-39/B Small Diameter Bombs Increment 1 (SDB-I); two thousand eight hundred (2,800) MK 82 General Purpose, 500-pound bomb bodies; thirteen thousand (13,000) KMU-556E/B, or KMU-556H/B with SABR-Y, KMU-556F/B, or KMU-556J/B Joint Direct Attack Munition (JDAM) Guidance Kits for the MK-84 bomb body; three thousand four hundred seventy-five (3,475) KMU-557E/B, or KMU-557F/B, or KMU-557H/B with SABR-Y, or KMU-557J/B JDAM Guidance Kits for the BLU-109 bomb body; one thousand four (1,004) KMU-572E/B, or KMU-572F/B, KMU-572H/B with SABR-Y, or KMU-572J/B JDAM Guidance Kits for GBU-38v1; and seventeen thousand four hundred seventy-five (17,475) FMU-152A/B fuzes. The following non-MDE items will also be included: FMU-139 fuzes; bomb components; munitions support and support equipment; and other related elements of logistics and program support. The estimated total cost is $6.75bn. Deliveries are estimated to begin in 2025. The United States is committed to the security of Israel, and it is vital to U.S. national interests to assist Israel to develop and maintain a strong and ready self-defense capability. This proposed sale is consistent with those objectives. The proposed sale improves Israel’s capability to meet current and future threats, strengthen its homeland defense, and serves as a deterrent to regional threats. Israel already has these weapons in its inventory and will have no difficulty absorbing this equipment into its armed forces. The proposed sale of this equipment and support will not alter the basic military balance in the region. This proposed sale will be from both U.S. inventory, as available, and from principal contractors The Boeing Company, located in St. Louis, MO; ATK Tactical Systems Company LLC, located in Rocket Center, WV; L3Harris Fuzing and Ordnance Systems, located in Cincinnati, OH; and McAlester Army Ammunition Plant, located in McAlester, OK. The State Department has made a determination approving a possible Foreign Military Sale to the Government of Israel of AGM-114 Hellfire Missiles and related equipment for an estimated cost of $660 m. The Defense Security Cooperation Agency delivered the required certification notifying Congress of this possible sale today. The Government of Israel has requested to buy three thousand (3,000) AGM-114 Hellfire Air-to-Ground Missiles, to include one or any combination of the R3, F, F/A, K1, K1A, K2, K3, K3A, KA, N, N3, and/or R variants. The following non-MDE items will also be included: support and test equipment; integration and test support; spare and repair parts; software delivery and support; publications and technical documentation; personnel training and training equipment; U.S. Government and contractor engineering; technical and logistics support services; storage; and other related elements of logistics and program support. The estimated total cost is $660m. Deliveries are estimated to begin in 2028. The principal contractor will be the Lockheed Martin Corporation, located in Troy, AL. At this time, the U.S. Government is not aware of any offset agreement proposed in connection with this potential sale. Any offset agreement will be defined in negotiations between the purchaser and the contractor. Implementation of this proposed sale will not require the assignment of any additional U.S. Government or contractor representatives to Israel. 12 Feb 25. Indian Navy Selects NewSpace for Unmanned Wingman. In what is easily the most significant deal between the Indian military and a local startup company, the Indian Navy has selected Bengaluru-based startup NewSpace Research & Technologies (NRT) to develop its Naval Collaborative Combat Air Vehicle (N-CCAV), an unmanned aircraft that will operate collaboratively with the navy’s MiG-29K and future Rafale-M fighter aircraft. 14 Feb 25. BDL, Rafael sign Ice Breaker agreement. India’s Bharat Dynamics Limited (BDL) has signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) with Rafael Advanced Defense Systems to support the production of the Israeli company’s Ice Breaker stand-off air-to-surface missile in India. Speaking at Aero India 2025 on 11 February, a Rafael official told Janes that through the MOU the companies aim to locally manufacture the Ice Breaker missile and offer it to the Indian Armed Forces. On announcing the agreement, Rafael and BDL said in a statement that with the production of the Ice Breaker missile, “the Indian Armed Forces can readily benefit from a next-generation weapon system tailored to their unique operational needs”. The partnership emphasises local manufacturing and transfer of “critical technologies”, it added. The Ice Breaker missile is compatible with the outer mold of the Spice 1000 munition. Platforms that can carry the Spice 1000 can integrate the Ice Breaker with minor modifications to avionics and stores certification. Fixed-wing platforms such as the Light Combat Aircraft (LCA) and MiG-29K can carry up to four missiles, while the Light Combat Helicopter (LCH) can carry a maximum of two missiles, Gishri added.
