29 Jan 25. Instro, a subsidiary of Elbit Systems UK, won a contract uplift in October 2024 to provide additional XACT nv33 compact Night Vision Goggles (NVGs) to the British Armed Forces. The contract solidifies the business as a leading provider of NVGs to the British Armed Forces. The contract, worth £16m, will see a phased rollout of the systems to the British Armed Forces. Instro has already delivered over 3,500 NVGs to the UK Armed Forces, demonstrating the success of Elbit Systems UK’s investment in the Electro-Optic Centre of Excellence in Kent. 28 Jan 25. BAE Systems has been awarded a £285m contract by the Ministry of Defence to support the Royal Navy’s Shared Infrastructure, Combat Management Systems (CMS) and warship networks. RECODE is an eight-year programme ensuring the Navy’s fleet is armed and ready for evolving military challenges. It is tailored to meet the Royal Navy’s future operational needs and will deliver a modernisation programme at pace to enable the agile deployment of capabilities. The contract award builds on 13 years of collaboration with the Royal Navy in which the BAE Systems’ CMS is used across a wide range of naval assets.

A £173m Ministry of Defence training contract with British business Draken will boost Teesside International Airport and support jobs across Teesside, Bournemouth and the Midlands – delivering on the Government’s Plan for Change. In addition to strengthening our national security, the deal will maintain vital infrastructure in the North East and support more than 200 UK jobs. The new contract will deliver Armed Forces training for responding to a range of threats – including air-to-air combat, electronic warfare and missile attacks. 29 Jan 25. Plasan Sasa has secured a contract from Hanwha Aerospace to provide additional armour packages for K9 Thunder self-propelled howitzers. The final user of the enhanced artillery systems has not been officially disclosed, though sources suggest it is likely to be Romania. The armour modules are reported to be similar to those used in the Australian AS9 Huntsman variant of the K9 howitzer. This suggests a focus on increased battlefield survivability and protection for the European customer. Romania placed an order for South Korean artillery systems in July 2024, strengthening its defence capabilities. Serexna, the consortium formed by Serco, Exail Robotics Belgium, and Naval Group Belgium, announced the award of the 24NSPER contract for the maintenance of the Belgian and Dutch navies’ Mine Countermeasure (MCM) vessels. This contract includes the current MCM minehunters and the future Naval Mine Warfare Capacity, which will be manufactured and delivered by Belgium Naval and Robotics (BNR), a consortium formed by Naval Group and Exail Robotics, integrating cutting-edge technologies such as aerial, surface, and underwater unmanned systems, designed to keep crews and motherships away from the danger zone. MCM vessels and unmanned systems play a crucial role in modern naval warfare by detecting, identifying, and neutralising underwater mines, ensuring the safety of naval fleets and maintaining secure sea routes. The Serexna Consortium was able to offer a solution combining the skills and resources of Serco, Naval Group Belgium and Exail Robotics Belgium to support the Belgian and Dutch navies to ensure availability and sovereignty. Serexna will maintain the fleets as they transition to the new Naval Mine Warfare Capacity, which will be delivered between 2025 and 2030. Employees will receive extensive training in the coming months to ensure they acquire the necessary skills for these advanced systems. Serco, which has been responsible for the current fleet to date, will continue to provide the expertise and experience of around 100 employees. Naval Group Belgium and Exail Robotics Belgium, the Belgian subsidiaries of Naval Group and Exail, in charge of delivering to the Belgian and Dutch navies the new and highly innovative naval mine warfare capability based on vessels deploying Unmanned Surface Vehicles (USVs), Autonomous Underwater Vehicles (AUVs), and Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs), will provide their expertise on these new technologies and support the transformation of the ecosystem.

The Polish Ministry of National Defence has signed a deal to buy more than 200 AGM-88G Advanced Anti-Radiation Guided Missiles-Extended Range (AARGM-ER) from the United States, becoming the region’s first ally to secure an advanced capability to destroy enemy radar emitters associated with air defense systems. 23 Jan 25. Schiebel has been awarded another multi-year service contract for the CAMCOPTER S-100 Unmanned Air System (UAS) with the European Maritime Safety Agency (EMSA). The contract is for service provision with Remotely Piloted Aircraft Services (RPAS) for supporting EU member states in emission monitoring and maritime surveillance operations. For the third time in a row, Schiebel has been awarded a tender with EMSA. In 2018, Schiebel signed its first contract to support European coast guards and maritime authorities, followed by a second contract in 2021. Terma signs new contract with SWISSto12 to deliver baseline SCOEs to HummingSat, the first small geostationary satellite for telecommunication to be developed under a contract between ESA and SWISSto12. Terma Space is proud to announce a new partnership with the Swiss aerospace and telecommunications company, SWISSto12. The small yet powerful satellite is to be placed in geostationary orbit, approximately 36,000 kilometers from Earth, with the purpose of streaming data and broadcasting television. The project is a collaboration between ESA and SWISSto12 and has its first satellite launch planned for 2026. As part of the HummingSat Project, Terma will deliver three Power SCOE systems and one FLATSAT SCOE based on Terma’s UniverSAS product, alongside one Stand-Alone Battery Conditioning Equipment (BCE), that is able to serve to batteries at the same time. 30 Jan 25. Thales has signed a contract with the French defence procurement agency (DGA) to supply the French Navy with several hundred SonoFlash sonobuoys. Manufactured in France in collaboration with French SMEs, the SonoFlash sonobuoy strengthens France’s strategic and capability ambitions in the field of anti-submarine warfare. Deployed from a maritime patrol aircraft (such as the ATL2) or a helicopter (for example an NH90), the SonoFlash sonobuoy enables the detection of submarines. It is fully interoperable with the Flash dipping sonar and the CAPTAS family of towed array sonars. Thales will enhance the anti-submarine warfare capabilities of the French Navy by providing several hundred SonoFlash sonobuoys. These expendable sonar buoy are the only such models to offer both active and passive modes: they are equipped with a powerful low-frequency emitter and a receiver with high directivity. Combined with the FLASH dipping sonar, the SonoFlash sonobuoys will enable an airborne platform to search for the presence of submarines over a greater range, and offer greater responsiveness to the evasive manoeuvres of these platforms. The high-performance communication systems of the SonoFlash enable all surface ships and aircraft, as well as acoustic support centres equipped with a sonobuoy processing system, to receive the data collected by the buoy.

23 Jan 25. Mack Defense announced that the US military has ordered 103 Mack Defense M917A3 Heavy Dump Trucks (HDTs). The additional vehicles are part of the previously announced firm-fixed price $296m contract over seven years that the Army awarded Mack Defense in 2018, which allows for up to 683 trucks. 28 Jan 25. BAE to Upgrade Additional Mk 45 Naval Guns for US Navy. Advanced firepower will continue to play a critical role at sea as Sailors face advanced threats. The U.S. Navy has awarded BAE Systems over $70m to upgrade Mk 45 5-inch naval gun systems and ancillary equipment. On Sept. 30, BAE Systems received a $23.5m modification to a $47m contract awarded at the end of July, bringing the total value to over $70m. Under the contract, BAE Systems will upgrade and overhaul existing systems to the Mk 45 Mod 4 configuration. The upgrade to the Mk 45 Mod 4 configuration includes a 62-caliber barrel and a mechanically strengthened gun mount. It also features a fully digital control system that easily integrates targeting and fire control data. Packet Digital announced that it has been awarded an additional contract by the U.S. Navy to continue its development of unmanned aircraft systems (UAS) smart batteries, chargers, and power systems. The contract was awarded as a follow-up to the $8.5m contract Packet Digital received in December 2022 from the Navy as it sought a standardized battery solution for its UAS fleet to handle ship-to-ship and ship-to-shore missions. The combination of high-powered and highly efficient batteries with safe and portable storage containers, along with fleet management software, makes Packet Digital’s power solutions for ship-based autonomous systems an all-in-one solution. Packet Digital designed and developed lithium-ion smart battery packs as part of its previous contract with the Navy, and now with this new contract, it will increase the scale of its manufacturing output at its manufacturing and assembly facility in Fargo. 29 Jan 25. Mumbai-based RRP S4E is supplying its Viraj 28-B camera and PR82 thermal sight to the Indian Army. (RRP S4E). India’s Ministry of Defence (MoD) has awarded contracts to Mumbai-based RRP S4E to procure long-range cameras and thermal sights for the Indian Army. Shikhar Gupta, vice-president of business development at RRP S4E, told Janes that the contracts have a combined worth of about INR1bn (USD11.6m). RRP S4E will deliver its Viraj 28-B camera and PR82 thermal sight to the MoD, Gupta said. According to company specifications, Viraj 28-B weighs less than 9 kg and consists of a day camera and a thermal sensor. The day camera has a full high-definition (HD) 1080p resolution, 30x optical zoom, and 16x digital zoom. The thermal sensor has a resolution of 640×480p and 6x optical zoom. PR82 is a thermal night-vision scope that has a 12-micron 640×480p thermal sensor with an organic light-emitting diode (OLED) resolution of 800×600p. It has 3x optical magnification and 4x digital zoom capability. PR82 weighs about 875 g. It can detect, recognise, and identify a human at a range of 2 km, 900 m, and 500 m, respectively. Gupta said PR82 can be integrated onto different rifles in service with the Indian Army including AK-47, Indian Small Arms System (INSAS), SIG716, and Tavor TAR-21. The Israel Ministry of Defence (IMOD) has awarded Elbit Systems Ltd. a contract worth approximately $80m for the development and initial installation of an advanced Airborne Self-Protection Suite on the F-16I fleet. Under the contract, the company will equip the Israeli Air Force with cutting-edge self-protection suites designed to further robust the survivability of the F-16I aircraft, enabling it to operate safely in hostile environments. The suite will include state-of-the-art Electronic Warfare (EW) solution integrated with an advanced Electro-Optical (EO) Passive Missile Warning and Launch Detection System (PAWS), enabling enhanced protection from a wide range of threats bolstering the safety of both aircrews and platforms. Elbit Systems offers a range of advanced, operationally proven defense systems designed for various types of aircraft and helicopters. As global threats increase, the company’s self-protection suites are drawing significant global interest, with Elbit securing numerous contracts in recent years.
27 Jan 25. Japan to procure 23 MQ-9B SeaGuardians. Japan’s Ministry of Defense (MoD) is working to finalise a contract with General Atomics Aeronautical Systems Inc (GA-ASI) to procure MQ-9B SeaGuardian remotely piloted aircraft (RPA) for the Japan Maritime Self-Defense Force (JMSDF). A spokesperson for the MoD told Janes, “The JMSDF plans to acquire 23 MQ-9B SeaGuardians.” The spokesperson said if the MoD is able to sign the contract with GA-ASI by fiscal year (FY) 2025, it will expect the MQ-9B SeaGuardians to be delivered to the JMSDF in FY 2028. GA-ASI announced in early December 2024 that its SeaGuardian has been selected by the JMSDF for the service’s long-endurance unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) programme. The JMSDF has been testing SeaGuardian since May 2023, GA-ASI said. Japan’s defence budget request for FY 2025 highlights the MoD’s plans to procure long-endurance UAVs to “strengthen intelligence and surveillance capabilities while minimising human casualties”. GA-ASI said the JMSDF conducted different tests with SeaGuardian including evaluations about using the RPA to conduct missions currently undertaken by manned platforms. According to Janes All the World’s Aircraft: Unmanned, SeaGuardian has a length of 11.7 m, a wingspan of 24 m, a maximum take-off weight of 5,670 kg, and a maximum external payload capacity of 2,155 kg. This acquisition comes on the back of a AU$431m order for Advanced Anti-Radiation Guided Missile-Extended Range (AARGM-ER) missiles announced by the Australian government in August 2023 and will expand the nation’s critical munitions war stocks. The FAcT program was awarded to SkyAlyne, a joint venture between CAE and KF Aerospace. King Air 260 deliveries for the FAcT program are expected to begin in the first half of 2028.
