20 Jan 25. Airbus Defence and Space equips in close collaboration with HENSOLDT the “German Airborne Weapon Systems Electronic Warfare Center” with new up-to-date software and hardware to provide a streamlined, service-oriented approach to improve the support of mission-specific “Electronic Warfare Mission Data” for the aircraft operated by the German Armed Forces. HENSOLDT provides essential IT services and deployable hardware for mobile operations, including server hardware and workstation computers for personnel. The collaboration between Airbus and HENSOLDT marks a significant step in strengthening Germany’s defence capabilities, ensuring mission effectiveness and readiness in a complex and technology-driven defence environment.

 

20 Jan 25. Bundeswehr has ordered 568 logistics vehicles from Rheinmetall – a contract worth over €330m. The Bundeswehr has commissioned Rheinmetall to supply 568 logistics vehicles. These will include 349 UTF-trucks (unprotected transport vehicle) in 5t and 15t models, as well as 219 trucks with a swap-body system, 121 of which will have a protected driver’s cab. The total value of both projects amounts to over €330m gross. The UTF-trucks are to be delivered in 2026, the swap-body trucks by November 2025. The budget committee of the German Parliament, the Bundestag, approved the funds on 18 December 2024. Thus Rheinmetall booked the orders in the fourth quarter of 2024.

 

23 Jan 25. Patria to Deliver an Operational Border Security Information System to the Finnish Border Guard Together With Solita. The SPOT consortium formed by Patria and Solita won the Finnish Border Guard’s operational information system user applications (RAVALU) tender, which sought flexible and user-friendly applications for the demanding use of security authority. The German Bundeswehr’s procurement office (BAAINBw1) has selected Safran Electronics & Defense Germany to equip the German forces with the latest generation of portable infrared observation binoculars.These binoculars will provide additional operational capabilities to the German infantry by covering a wide range of operational needs, including day/night observation and target acquisition, irrespective of weather conditions, and even in GNSS2-denied environments. Safran Electronics & Defense Germany, based in Murr, Baden-Württemberg, is the primary point of contact for the German armed forces and provides support and operational maintenance for Safran products in coordination with users and key German logistics centers.

 

17 Jan 25. The Finnish Defence Forces (FDF) will acquire more night vision goggles from Senop. The value of the procurement is 19,9MEUR excluding VAT and its employment impact in Finland is significant. The procurement is set for delivery to the Finnish Army by the end of 2025. The procurement is based on a framework agreement concerning the procurement of military optronics signed with the Swedish and Finnish military procurement agencies last year. 21 Jan 25. GM Defense LLC, Detroit, Michigan, was awarded a $14,619,800 firm-fixed-price contract for armored heavy-duty suburban sport utility vehicles. Bids were solicited via the internet with one received. Work locations and funding will be determined with each order, with an estimated completion date of Dec. 31, 2029. U.S. Army Contracting Command, Detroit Arsenal, Michigan, is the contracting activity (W912CH-25-D-0018).

 

21 Jan 25. L3Harris Technologies (NYSE: LHX) has received a $263m order from the U.S. Army for continued production of the Enhanced Night Vision Goggle – Binocular (ENVG-B). This is the second order under the full-scale production Indefinite Delivery, Indefinite Quantity program, following a similar award earlier this year. L3Harris has delivered more than 18,000 ENVG-B systems to the Army to date, providing industry-leading Figure of Merit levels and digital overlays that augment performance. L3Harris will continue enhancing ENVG-B and similar technologies through investments in night-vision technology, artificial intelligence and open-system architecture development to expand the device’s critical capabilities for the thousands of systems the Army will deploy. 17 Jan 25. Lockheed Martin Rotary and Mission Systems, Liverpool, New York, has been awarded a $118,379,696 modification (P00052) to a previously awarded contract (FA8730-21-C-0022) for Three-Dimensional Expeditionary Long-Range Radar. The modification brings the total cumulative face value of the contract to $471,564,766. Work will be performed in Liverpool, New York, and is expected to be completed by March 16, 2027. Fiscal 2025 other procurement funds in the amount of $118,379,696 are being obligated at the time of award. The Air Force Life Cycle Management Center, Hanscom Air Force Base, Massachusetts, is the contracting activity.

 

17 Jan 25. ND Defense LLC, Madison Heights, Michigan, is awarded a Phase II (Build) modification (P00005) to increase the medium tactical truck (MTT) other transaction authority (OTA) agreement by $17,218,309. Phase I (Design) cost the Government $6,935,948. With the increase of $17,218,309 for Phase II, the total Phase I/II Agreement ceiling value has been increased to $24,154,257. Phase II is the build of the MTT prototype vehicle and will increase the OTA value by $17,218,309, from initial award amount of $6,935,948 for Phase I. This a firm-fixed-price, OTA agreement pursuant to 10 U.S. Code 4022 to research and develop a replacement to the currently fielded medium tactical vehicle replacement. This agreement will continue to leverage the efforts of the Office of Naval Research’s Broad Agency Announcement for the next generation-medium tactical truck by continuing to refine future requirements, understand design and technology tradeoffs through design, prototype build, and testing. This current modification (P00005) marks the start of the Phase II of the MTT agreement. Phase I was completed in September 2024 with the final submission of ND Defense’s critical design review and Phase I executive summary. Work will continue to be performed in Madison Heights, Michigan, with an expected completion date for Phase II of May 2026. Phase III (Test) will resume at the close of Phase II prototype build and continue for approximately eight months into early fiscal 2027. The maximum dollar value for Phase I and Phase II is $24,154,257. Funds will be obligated at time of award. Fiscal 2025 research and development (Marine Corps) funds in the amount of $7,070,600 are being obligated at time of Phase II award in early January 2025. Additional agreement funds will be obligated in fiscal 2026, in the amount of $10,147,709, to fully fund the build efforts of Phase II prototyping agreement. This agreement was a competitive acquisition pursuant to 10 U.S. Code 4022 for the research and development of a MTT prototype vehicle. 21 Jan 25. The US Navy has contracted Anello Photonics to develop a navigation system capable of delivering accurate guidance throughout the entire flight path of a hypersonic vehicle operating in Global Positioning System (GPS)-degraded and GPS-denied environments.Under the Phase I Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) contract, Anello’s Silicon Photonics Optical Gyroscope (SiPhOG) technology and sensor fusion engine will be demonstrated over a six-month period. The SiPhOG is designed based on integrated photonic system-on-chip technology. 16 Jan 25. In 2024, BAE Systems received a $212m contract from the US Navy for the modernisation of the amphibious transport dock USS Green Bay (LPD 20). Under the Docking Selected Restricted Availability (DSRA) contract awarded, BAE Systems will dry-dock the 684-foot-long ship at its San Diego shipyard. The shipyard’s employees and industry partners will perform upkeep work on the underwater hull, repair its system of ballast tanks, preserve its amphibious well deck area, and refurbish the living spaces for sailors and Marines onboard. The work is expected to begin in February 2025. USS Green Bay is the fourth ship of the San Antonio class and was commissioned in January 2009. It is the second US Navy vessel named after the Wisconsin city. BAE Systems is a leading provider of ship repair, maintenance, modernisation, conversion, and overhaul services for the Navy, other government agencies, and select commercial customers. 23 Jan 25. General Dynamics Mission Systems has been awarded a contract by the US Navy to manufacture advanced electronics for the MK 54 MOD 1 lightweight torpedoes. The fixed-price-incentive, firm-fixed-price, cost-plus-fixed-fee, and cost-only contract has potential value of up to $808.6m. Under the contract, General Dynamics will be responsible for the supply of torpedo kits and related test equipment, spares, provisioned item orders, engineering support and hardware support for the MK 54 Lightweight Torpedo Programme. 21 Jan 25. Cubic has received a contract award from Lockheed Martin to supply P5 Internal Subsystems (IS) to the F-35 program. 21 Jan 25. Kratos Defense & Security Solutions, Inc. 22 Jan 25. Lockheed Martin (NYSE: LMT) has received a $270 m  contract from the U.S. Air Force to integrate a system of next-generation infrared defensive sensors on the F-22 Raptor.  The F-22 will soon feature a newly developed, distributed set of embedded TacIRST sensors developed by Lockheed Martin to enhance aircraft survivability and lethality, known as the Infrared Defensive System (IRDS). In addition to managing integration of IRDS on the F-22, the company will also support integration on other platforms.

 

21 Jan 25. Mercury Systems, Inc. (NASDAQ: MRCY, www.mrcy.com), a technology company that delivers mission-critical processing power to the edge, today announced it was awarded a $24.5m contract to develop a data processing and storage subsystem for a U.S. Defense Department satellite program. Under a contract with an innovative space systems prime contractor, Mercury will deliver a number of these subsystems that leverage its commercial products and deep expertise in data recording, data processing, and subsystem integration for defense applications. 21 Jan 25. Viasat, Inc. (NASDAQ: VSAT), a global leader in satellite communications, announced today it was selected by NASA to support the agency’s direct-to-Earth (DTE) capabilities via the Near Space Network (NSN) Services contract, part of a five-year multi-award indefinite delivery, indefinite quantity (IDIQ) contract program with an option to extend five years at a total cumulative value of $4.82bn. Viasat is one of four commercial companies NASA announced will receive Task Order awards under this initiative. Initially, Viasat will provide global ground segment support services to NASA missions, with the potential to provide additional services in the future. The NASA NSN Services contract will provide commercial ground and space relay services for future NASA missions from low Earth orbit (LEO) to two million kilometers from Earth. As part of the contract, Viasat’s Defense and Advanced Technologies (DAT) business will join other commercial providers in supplying DTE connectivity to current and planned NASA space missions. Argentinian President Javier Milei has signed Decree 21/2025, authorizing the classified acquisition of an anti-drone system to counter the rising threats posed by UAS. This initiative aims to address concerns such as terrorism, smuggling and criminal activities involving drones. The decree, published on January 13, empowers the Ministry of Security to oversee the acquisition under the authority granted by the National Security Law and related regulations. 23 Jan 25. Codan – Australia to procure radios for surveillance UAV. The Australian Department of Defence (DoD) is acquiring radio systems from Adelaide-based Codan Communications for a type of unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) being procured for the Australian Defence Force (ADF). Codan Communications will deliver its Sentry Mesh 6161 radios for integration into Sypaq Systems’ CorvoX UAVs under a contract worth AUD15m (USD9.4m ), the DoD announced on 22 January. The DoD announced plans to procure the CorvoX UAVs in July 2024 as part of an investment of over AUD100m to expand the ADF’s UAV arsenal. The procurements are part of project Def 129, which aims to secure different kinds of UAVs for the ADF to strengthen surveillance. According to Codan Communications, Sentry Mesh 6161 is a software-defined radio hosting mobile ad hoc network (MANET) waveforms. The radio uses the company’s MeshUltra mesh waveform that optimises the use of available channel bandwidth through a ‘Token Passing’ technology, which avoids collisions and provides a bound, predictable data packet latency. Sentry Mesh 6161 has a weight of 410 g and an output of 2 W, and features a multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) radio frequency (RF) architecture. 21 Jan 25. The Indian Ministry of Defence (MoD) has entered into an agreement with Bharat Dynamics Limited (BDL) for the procurement of medium-range surface-to-air missiles (MRSAM) at an estimated cost of Rs29.6bn ($342.5m).  This deal was formalised through a contract signing ceremony between MoD and BDL representatives, with Defence Secretary Rajesh Kumar Singh in attendance, on 16 January 2025, in New Delhi.  Designed to be a standard component on various Indian Naval vessels, the MRSAM system is also slated for integration into a large number of future naval acquisitions.  This contract signifies an important step in the ongoing process to enhance India’s defensive strength and localise sophisticated military technologies. In alignment with the ‘Aatmanirbhar Bharat’ initiative, BDL will supply these missiles under the ‘Buy Indian’ category, incorporating substantial domestic content.  The execution of this contract is expected to create around 350,000 mandays of employment within the defence sector, benefiting multiple micro, small and medium enterprises (MSMEs). (Source: naval-technology.com)

 

22 Jan 25. Curtiss-Wright Corporation (NYSE: CW) today announced that it has received a $27m contract award from the Canadian Commercial Corporation (CCC) for the supply of Aircraft Ship Integrated Securing and Traversing (ASIST) systems. Under the agreement, Curtiss-Wright’s facility based in Mississauga, Ontario, Canada will provide its critical aircraft handling systems and support to the U.S. Naval Air Warfare Center for use on Constellation Class Frigates (FFG-62). The recent award is part of a five-year indefinite delivery, indefinite quantity (IDIQ) contract, potentially valued at nearly $100m.

Lockheed Martin, Rotary and Mission Systems, Moorestown, New Jersey, is awarded a $280,418,928 cost-plus-fixed-fee, cost-plus-incentive-fee, and cost type modification to previously awarded contract N00024-23-C-5101 for combat systems engineering efforts of the planned modernization and new combat system capabilities selection for international partner Canadian Royal Navy ships operating AEGIS. Work will be performed in Moorestown, New Jersey and is expected to be completed by January 2028. Foreign Military Sales (Canada) (100%) funds in the amount of $126,174,827 will be obligated at time of award and will not expire at the end of the current fiscal year. The contract further cements SEA’s weapon-agnostic launcher capability as the leading choice for the UK Royal Navy and other leading international navies in regions including North America and South-East Asia. In service with the UK Royal Navy for more than 30 years, SEA’s TLS is weapon-agnostic, providing flexibility that has been a major draw for navies worldwide. 22 Jan 25. The Angolan Ministry of Finance has signed a financing agreement with France to construct ANGEO-1, the nation’s first high-resolution Earth observation satellite system. Finalised during the Angolan President’s diplomatic visit to France, the agreement marks a major milestone in Angola’s technological growth and space exploration ambitions, building on six years of bilateral cooperation between the two nations. The project is funded through two loans secured with Société Générale bank, totaling $231.46m (€35.27m and €189.99m). These funds will cover the satellite’s construction, launch, and orbital operations. Developed in collaboration with Airbus Defence and Space, ANGEO-1 represents a transformative step in Angola’s space capabilities. Once operational, the satellite will use Earth observation technology to address key challenges such as boosting agricultural productivity, monitoring environmental changes, and improving disaster management. A vital aspect of the initiative is knowledge transfer and capacity building. Training programs and academic partnerships aim to equip Angolan specialists with the expertise needed to lead the country’s growing space industry, ensuring sustainable progress in this sector. 17 Jan 25. Japan orders production of new Block II Chinooks. Japan’s Acquisition, Technology and Logistics Agency (ATLA) has awarded a contract to acquire new Boeing (Kawasaki) CH-47J/JA helicopters. The new helicopters are improved Block II variants, Boeing has said. The contract, awarded to Kawasaki Heavy Industries (KHI) in October 2024, covers the domestic production of 12 new CH-47JAs for the Japan Ground Self-Defense Force (JGSDF) and five new CH-47Js for the Japan Air Self-Defense Force (JASDF). The Japan Ministry of Defense (MoD) published details of the contract later in 2024. An ATLA spokesperson confirmed to Janes on 27 December that the contracts are valued at JPY161.1bn (USD1.03m) and JPY71.4 bn respectively. The Block II Chinook includes structural and design improvements to support future upgrades. Block II helicopters also incorporate redesigned fuel tanks, a strengthened fuselage, and an improved drivetrain, Boeing added. According to the ATLA spokesperson, the production of the 17 new CH-47J/JAs was contracted under the Japan 2024 fiscal year (FY) budget. The new helicopters will primarily replace existing “CH-47J/JAs that are currently operated in the JGSDF and the JASDF”, the ATLA spokesperson said. The Philippines continues to strengthen its air defense capabilities, with the Department of National Defense [DND] confirming plans to acquire 12 additional FA-50 Block 20 Fighting Eagle jets from Korea Aerospace Industries [KAI]. The deal, valued at $681m, is not just another order, but a critical part of the Philippines’ ambitious Re-Horizon 3 modernization program, aimed at enhancing the capabilities of the Philippine Air Force [PHAF]. Nammo announced that it has signed a contract to deliver its advanced 25 mm x 137 APEX PGU-47/U ammunition for the Royal Australian Air Force (RAAF’s) Lockheed Martin F-35A Lightning II combat aircraft. Details of the contract were not disclosed, although Nammo noted that production of the ammunition is expected to commence in 2025 with deliveries scheduled over the following two years. The contract is also the first major success for this advanced ammunition type, which is designed specifically for the F-35A’s GAU-22/A cannon. (Source: AMR)

 

23 Jan 25. Shield AI V-BAT Selected as Japan Maritime Self-Defense Force’s 1st Maritime ISR Platform. Shield AI, the defense technology company building an AI-powered autonomy software platform and tools for the world, announced today that its V-BAT unmanned aircraft system (UAS) has been selected by the Japan Maritime Self-Defense Force (JMSDF) as the country’s first-ever maritime-based intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance (ISR) platform. V-BAT will provide advanced ISR capabilities to JMSDF surface vessels, reinforcing Japan’s defense posture and operational readiness in the Indo-Pacific region. This milestone deal represents the beginning of a planned multi-year stream of increasing V-BAT orders to support JMSDF operations. Under the agreement, the JMSDF will acquire multiple V-BAT UAS from Shield AI, enhancing the surveillance and intelligence-gathering capabilities of its surface vessels.   (Source: ASD Network)
