The Ministry of Defence has awarded the seven-year contract, worth £476m, to UK-based Foreland Shipping Limited (FSL), ensuring the continued support of military operations and strengthening national security, through strategic sea lift. Under the contract, FSL will provide four roll-on roll-off shipping vessels capable of transporting essential equipment and supplies, including armoured vehicles, emergency medical supplies and complex weapons, across the globe. Minister of National Defence Dovilė Šakalienė met with representatives of the Swedish manufacturer BAE Systems Hägglunds to discuss acquisition of the CV-90 tracked infantry fighting vehicles and closer cooperation with the Lithuanian Defence industry. The Swedes were debriefed on the Government’s decision to increase the limit on borrowing for defence to EUR 800m next year and assured of comprehensive Government-level support for cooperation with the company if the negotiations were successful ad met Lithuania’s interests. Lithuania will join the IFV acquisition programme with Finland, Sweden and Norway. The model and terms of industrial cooperation will have to be approved by all the participant, therefore, the negotiations are planned to be completed in the end of 2025. (Source: joint-forces.com)
27 Dec 24. The International Defense Cooperation Directorate of the Israel Ministry of Defense (IMOD), SIBAT, has concluded a defence deal with Slovakia, marking the largest such agreement between the two nations. Valued at around €560m ($582.96m), the contract is expected to bolster Slovakia’s defence capabilities through the acquisition of IAI’s BARAK MX Integrated Air Defense System. The agreement was formalised in Tel Aviv by IMOD director general Eyal Zamir, alongside key figures. The BARAK MX is developed through close collaboration with IAI’s in-house strike systems and loitering munitions teams, drawing on the company’s expertise in the Offensive Domain to “effectively” counter enemy threats. 19 Dec 24. IDV has signed a contract with the Direzione Armamenti Terrestri (DAT) of the Italian Ministry of Defence for the supply of 1,453 tactical-logistic trucks. The new trucks, to be delivered starting from 2025 until 2038, represent an important step in ensuring the renewal and modernisation of the Italian Army’s fleet of tactical-logistic vehicles. The contract is for the supply of a variety of military logistic platforms equipped with tactical cabins and based on the new range of IDV SMR6 trucks (Standard Military Range), which includes 4×4, 8×8 and 10×10 variants. The new vehicles will come in diverse configurations – from troop and material transport to water tankers, fuel tankers, container carriers, recovery vehicles and towing systems. These are state-of-the-art vehicles ensure the Italian Army the highest levels of mobility, protection, manoeuverability, and reliability as well as logistical communality among the different platforms. The signing of this contract represents another significant milestone for IDV in the supply of land vehicles to the Italian Army.
19 Dec 24. Norway Acquires More NASAMS Air Defence Systems. The Norwegian government has ordered more NASAMS air defence systems from Kongsberg Defence & Aerospace (‘KONGSBERG’), which will strengthen the country’s defence capabilities to combat aerial threats. The contract has a value of NOK 2.7bn. The contract with the Norwegian Defence Material Agency includes new multi-missile canister launchers and new Fire Distribution Centers for NASAMS, replacing equipment previously donated to Ukraine as well as building up further capacity. In June, Norway announced investments in new NASAMS systems that included an option to make further acquisitions. The option has now been exercised. (Source: ASD Network)
19 Dec 24. Rheinmetall receives large-scale order from Bundeswehr. In cooperation with its partner company blackned, Rheinmetall has received a large-scale order for a major project within the program “Digitalization of land-based operations” (D-LBO) by the German Bundeswehr, worth €1.2bn gross. The order includes the integration of IT-systems for all vehicle and platform-systems of the land forces. Rheinmetall accounts for around €730m gross of the contract volume. The remaining share of around €470m goes to blackned GmbH. The corresponding procurement contract has now been signed by representatives of the Federal Office of Bundeswehr Equipment, Information Technology and In-Service Support (BAAINBw) and the ISI working group (ArGe IT-Systemintegration), which is made up of the companies blackned GmbH and Rheinmetall Electronics GmbH. Among others subcontractors, Airbus Defence and Space GmbH will be the outstanding ArGe-partner. Until mid of 2030, the new technology will be integrated in more than 10,000 combat and support vehicles of the Bundeswehr. This hardware-related integration part, which will incorporate the pre-conversion of the vehicle platforms, has been manifested in a second procurement order. Contractor in this case is ArGe D-LBO, consisting of Rheinmetall Landsysteme GmbH and KNDS Deutschland GmbH & Co. KG. D-LBO is a key-project in modernizing the land forces of the Bundeswehr and one of the most significant procurement schemes of the German Army. The modern IT enables the interconnectivity of vehicles and soldiers as well as of sensors and effectors while the exchange of real-time information increases the operational capabilities and interoperability of units equipped with D-LBO. The contract for IT-system integration has a term of up to ten years and covers all activities concerning the integration of new digital radio and command systems into a standardized IT-system. The configuration control will be in the hands of BWI GmbH, the Bundeswehr’s head office for IT-systems.
23 Dec 24. Raytheon Co., Andover, Massachusetts, was awarded a $946,446,735 modification (P00002) to contract W31P4Q-24-C-0003 for PATRIOT production hardware, software and services. Work will be performed in Andover, Massachusetts, with an estimated completion date of Dec. 31, 2029. Theon International Plc (THEON) announces that the Defence and Budget Committees of the German Parliament approved yesterday a new addendum of the OCCAR contract, exercising the 3rd consecutive option, with an additional option of similar size still available. The Consortium of HENSOLDT Optronics GmbH and THEON SENSORS SA has been invited by OCCAR to sign the said amendment on 20 December 2024 in Bonn, Germany.

The original contract for the Production and In-Service Support of Binocular Night Vision Goggles (BNVG) with the international organisation OCCAR was signed in July 2021. As of today, 49,550 Mikron BNVG (powered by Exosens 16 mm tubes) have already been contracted for supply to the German and Belgian Armed Forces. 26 Dec 24. Saab has secured a contract with the Swedish Defence Materiel Administration to upgrade the country’s coastal anti-ship missile system. The agreement, valued at SKr800m ($72.29m), involves Saab’s RBS15 Mk3 anti-ship missile, which will be mounted on a new truck-based launcher module. Sweden currently operates the earlier RBS15 Mk2 version. The Swedish Armed Forces reintroduced coastal anti-ship missile capabilities in 2016, which will now be enhanced with the RBS15 Mk3 on new launcher platforms. The RBS15 Mk3, developed in collaboration with Diehl Defence, offers features such as an adaptive flight profile to low sea-skimming altitudes based on wave height, thus improving its range and ability to penetrate defences. 24 Dec 24. Babcock has expanded its training capabilities with the acquisition of 11 L-39 Albatros aircraft from Apache Aviation. Financial details of the deal remain undisclosed. These jets are an addition to Babcock’s international fighter pilot training academy in Dijon, France. Situated at a repurposed military facility, the academy is set to provide a range of training programmes tailored to the requirements of air forces around the globe. The curriculum, crafted by ex-members of the French Air and Space Force, will adhere to Nato standards and include combat scenario training on the L-39s. Babcock said its latest move is aimed at bolstering support for military training missions across air squadrons, naval vessels, and army units within France and Europe. 19 Dec 24. Ireland to field new Dassault ‘strategic reach’ aircraft. Ireland is to field a new Dassault Falcon 6X business jet in the global support role, the country’s government announced on 18 December. Tánaiste (deputy prime minister) and Minister for Defence Micheál Martin confirmed on 18 December the EUR53m (USD55m) contract for the “strategic reach” aircraft to be delivered in December 2025. “[The] new multi-purpose strategic reach aircraft [will be] capable of use in overseas missions across the globe,” the Irish government said, adding that the twin-jet aircraft will be available for use from 2026. The Irish government described the new aircraft that can fly 5,000 n miles as being “a game-changer” for its transport, airlift, and aeromedical capabilities. The Falcon 6X has a total seating capacity of 17 persons (or a passenger capacity of 14). Once received, the new aircraft will be operated by the Irish Air Corps from Casement Aerodrome in Dublin. Elbit Systems Deutschland has received an order from Lufthansa Technik to equip the German government’s Airbus A350 aircraft with Elbit’s advanced J-MUSIC™ Directed Infrared Countermeasures (DIRCM) self-protection systems. This order follows the decision made by the Federal Office for Equipment, Information Technology and Operations of the Bundeswehr (BAAINBw). The contract, which will be executed over a five-year period, marks the first installation of Elbit’s DIRCM system on an A350 aircraft and adds to the growing list of contracts and aircraft models the company has secured in recent years for its cutting-edge DIRCM technology.

20 Dec 24. The Spanish government has signed a contract with Munich-based, Germany, NATO Eurofighter and Tornado Management Agency (NETMA) for the acquisition of 25 Eurofighter aircraft. Known as the Halcon II programme, the order will cover the delivery of 21 latest-generation single-seat and four twin-seat Eurofighter aircraft to replace part of the F-18 fleet operated by the Spanish Air and Space Force. The agreement, which follows a previous contract signed in 2022 for a batch of 20 fighter jets, will see the Spanish Eurofighter fleet grow to 115 aircraft. With the first delivery due in 2030, these new aircraft will: boost Spain’s air-power capabilities and operations; reinforce its prominent position at the heart of NATO, and secure the programme’s industrial footprint.
27 Dec 24. Eurofighter and the NATO Eurofighter and Tornado Management Agency (NETMA) have inked a contract in Rome, confirming an order for up to 24 Eurofighter Typhoon aircraft for the Italian Air Force. This move comes shortly after an acquisition by the Spanish Air Force earlier this month. The incoming aircraft will replace older Tranche 1 models, offering upgrades in avionics, weaponry, and operational capabilities. The Eurofighter Typhoon will be equipped to handle Brimstone III and Meteor missiles, feature sensors and enhanced connectivity. These sensors provide the pilot with improved situational awareness, seamlessly integrating data to continuously update the battle space picture for actionable intelligence. 20 Dec 24. The Bundeswehr and TAURUS Systems GmbH (a joint venture between MBDA and SAAB) have signed a contract for the maintenance and modernization of the TAURUS stand-off weapon system. The measures will ensure the weapon’s operational readiness until at least 2045. A central component of the contract is the comprehensive modernization of TAURUS cruise missiles used by German armed forces. In addition to maintenance, the system will receive technological upgrades to meet the increasing demands placed on modern weapon systems. The Bundeswehr is strengthening its stand-off weapons capability with the measures commissioned. TAURUS is a key element of the German Air Force and NATO. The air-to-surface missile enables the German Air Force to overcome enemy air defence systems from a safe distance, minimizing the risks to pilots and platforms. With a range of over 500 kilometres and high precision, TAURUS makes an important contribution to deterrence and to national and allied defence.

With this mission, Terma takes another step forward in planetary defense innovation. Selected to supply the Remote Terminal Unit (RTU) for this groundbreaking mission, Terma will play a vital role in ESA’s latest effort to study asteroid dynamics and enhance planetary safety. 23 Dec 24. BAE Systems has secured contracts totalling $68m to produce 44 additional cold weather all-terrain vehicles (CATV) for the US Army. This includes a $48m extension to the existing full-rate production contract from August 2022 and a $20m award for the fiscal year 2025. The CATV, a member of the BvS10 family, is an unarmoured variant of the Beowulf, chosen by the US Army in 2022 to replace the Bv206 for Arctic operations. Built by BAE Systems Hägglunds in northern Sweden, the Beowulf platform is an amphibious dual-body vehicle which serves military applications, HADR (Humanitarian Aid Disaster Relief), fire fighting and rescue operations. It can carry 14 passengers, and a payload of up to 8,000kg, at 65km/hour. Beowulf was offered by the company in July 2020 for the Army’s CATV programme aimed at operating in harsh Arctic conditions. 19 Dec 24. Sentrycs inks new public safety C-UAS deals. Sentrycs has announced that it has recently closed counter-uncrewed aerial systems (C-UAS) agreements with two new law enforcement organisations, including one in North America, for both fixed and mobile operations. The company has seen its business quadruple, year over year, and notes a spike in C-UAS interest heading into 2025. Using proprietary technology, Sentrycs’ systems passively detect, identify and track drones, and are designed to reduce the possibility of false detections. 24 Dec 24. DoD Awards $253.7m to Expand Facilities for Gas Turbine Engine Production. The U.S. Department of Defense (DoD) has announced a $253.7m award to Williams International (Williams) via the Defense Production Act (DPA). The award will enable Williams to increase engine production capacity to meet DoD’s demand for volume growth of Harpoon, Joint Air-to-Surface Standoff Missiles (JASSM), Long Range Anti-Ship Missiles (LRASM), Tomahawk, and other precision strike weapons. This effort supports the 2024 National Defense Industrial Strategy’s objectives to expand domestic production and ensure resilient supply chains. The award utilizes DPA Purchases (DPAP) funding appropriated by the 2024 Indo-Pacific Security Supplemental Appropriations Act and Ukraine Security Supplemental Appropriations Act 2024. The effort will increase the production capacity of critical materials needed to defend against adversarial aggression. By helping to manufacture and support gas turbine engines for military applications, Williams will expand capacity and increase domestic engine production to support the DoD’s demand for increased numbers of precision strike weapons and unmanned systems. This facilitation effort is instrumental for both the Air Force and the Navy’s engine-reliant weapons and is necessary to enable the rapid replenishment of our Nation’s long-range weapons of choice. 24 Dec 24. The Indian Army has entered a contract with Larsen & Toubro (L&T) for the procurement of K9 Vajra-T self-propelled artillery platforms. 23 Dec 24. Austal has been awarded a contract extension for the development of two additional Evolved Cape Class patrol boats for the Australian Border Force. The order brings the total number of Evolved Cape Class patrol boats scheduled for delivery to the Commonwealth by Austal to 12, though this order marks the first two capabilities ordered for the Australian Border Force. The capabilities are expected to protect Australia’s borders, supporting the Maritime Border Command and Operation Sovereign Borders. In an ASX statement, the shipbuilder confirmed that it has delivered eight of the Evolved vessels to date, with two still under construction at the company’s Henderson, Western Australia, shipyard. 27 Dec 24. Embraer (NYSE: ERJ; B3: EMBR3) signed today a contract with an undisclosed customer for the sale of two C-390 Millennium multi-mission aircraft. The contract also includes a comprehensive training and support package as well as the supply of spare parts. The aircraft will be specially configured to meet customers’ requirements, which include tactical transport of troops and vehicles, humanitarian aid, disaster management and medical evacuation.

General Atomics Aeronautical Systems Inc., Poway, California, was awarded a not-to-exceed $107,979,905, firm-fixed-price, undefinitized contract for Canada MQ-9B remotely piloted aircraft systems hardware. This contract provides the necessary Foreign Military Sales (FMS) hardware and components to support Canada’s MQ-9B Direct Commercial Sale program. This contract involves FMS to Canada. 26 Dec 24. The Israel Ministry of Defense (MoD) has finalised a contract with Israel Aerospace Industries (IAI) to increase the production of Arrow-3 interceptors. The agreement, led by the Israel Missile Defense Organisation (IMDO) and the Directorate of Defense Research & Development (DDR&D), entails the provision of Arrow-3 interceptors to the Israel Defense Forces (IDF). The multi-billion-dollar contract was formalised at the Ministry’s headquarters in Tel Aviv, with defence and industry figures in attendance. 28 Dec 24. Iraq is to become the first export customer for the Korea Aerospace Industries (KAI) KUH-1 Surion utility helicopter. Tony Osborne at Aviation Week reported that the South Korean news agency Yonhap had reported on 23 December, 2024, that KAI had been awarded a $93.7m contract to provide an undisclosed number of the helicopters by March 2029. Later on 23 December Korea Aerospace Industries (KAI) itself announced that it had signed a US $94m (136bn-won) deal to export two KUH-1 Surion twin-engine, transport/utility helicopters to Iraq, for use by the Iraqi Ministry of Interior for specialised fire-fighting missions. Under the terms of the agreement, KAI will supply a comprehensive logistics package, pilot and maintenance training, and will perform the required customization for the fire-fighting role.
