Babcock International Group (Babcock), the defence company, has been awarded a two-year contract extension by the UK Ministry of Defence (MOD) to continue to provide technical support services across the Armed Forces. Babcock will deliver a range of essential critical services to the Royal Air Force (RAF), Joint Aviation Command and Strategic Command at 16 stations across the UK. This full-service partnership provides the MOD with a safe, cost-effective way to supply aircraft maintenance and support, general engineering, logistics and training support consistently across multiple sites, ensuring these organisations have the assets they need wherever, whenever and however they need them.

04 Oct 24. Kongsberg Defence & Aerospace (KONGSBERG) has signed a contract with the Ministry of National Defence in the Republic of Lithuania for the delivery of more NASAMS air defence systems. The EUR 193m contract will provide Lithuania with the latest technology and increased air defence capabilities. As part of the contract, Lithuania will also upgrade parts of the NASAMS equipment the country acquired in 2017. The acquisition follows the orders placed in December 2023 to increase the number of NASAMS fire units providing Lithuania with the most modern and advanced air defence system. 07 Oct 24. Romania picks Turkish armored vehicles in $940m deal. Romania has selected the Turkish Cobra II four-wheel-drive armored vehicle for the country’s land forces, ordering a total of 1,059 units. Under the plan, the first 278 vehicles will be made in Turkey by manufacturer Otokar, and the remainder at a plant operated in Romania by local companies. The planned sale is estimated to be worth around RON 4.263 bn ($940 m), Otokar said in a statement. (Source: Defense News)

08 Oct 24. Anduril lands $250m Pentagon contract for drone defense system. The Pentagon awarded Anduril Industries a contract worth $250 m to counter drone attacks against U.S. forces with the company’s recoverable Roadrunner interceptor. Under the deal, which Anduril announced on Tuesday, the Defense Department will buy 500 Roadrunner all-up rounds as well as the firm’s portable Pulsar electronic-warfare capability, which can be integrated with aircraft to jam enemy systems. 08 Oct 24. American Rheinmetall Vehicles, Sterling Heights, MI, has won one of two contracts awarded in the U.S. Army’s Small Multi-Purpose Equipment Transport vehicle (S-MET) program. American Rheinmetall Vehicles’ unmanned ground vehicle (UGV) will provide the Army with a versatile and resilient platform capable of efficiently transporting supplies and equipment over rugged terrain to support combat operations. American Rheinmetall Vehicles collaborated with lead partner Textron Systems on the proposal. American Rheinmetall Vehicles will manufacture and deliver eight prototypes to the Army in 2025 for testing, evaluation, and to compete against the platform delivered by the second awardee before the Army downselects to a single platform and the program transitions to full scale production. ELTA North America (ELTA NA), a United States company headquartered in Maryland, is a defense industry leader in Air and Ground Based Radar Systems, Airborne Electronic Warfare, and Integrated Counter UAS solutions. The US Army has issued a $7.5m contract to ELTA North America through National Center for Manufacturing Sciences (NCMS) as a demonstration project to support and sustain a critical vehicle protection system known as TROPHY. This system provides protection against various anti-tank threats, enhances the ability to identify enemy locations and significantly improves survivability in combat environments. 08 Oct 24. BlackSky Technology Inc. (NYSE: BKSY) won a seven-figure contract to deliver non-Earth Imaging (NEI) services to support the customer’s Space Domain Awareness (SDA) capabilities. As part of the contract BlackSky will integrate Gen-2 satellite imagery of on-orbit spacecraft into the customer’s collection of SDA assets. Space Situational Awareness (SSA) is vital for identifying, characterizing, and tracking space objects and their operational environment. SSA data is critical for maintaining space safety and facilitating real-time space traffic coordination. The data is used to help space operators predict and avoid collisions between objects or avoid debris from fragmentation events, meteor storms, or other natural events that might also affect operations. SSA is foundational to all space safety and real time space traffic coordination activities and is a critical component of SDA, which is the ability of decision makers to understand, as completely as necessary, their current and predicted operational environments.

The Department of Defense today announced awards totaling $50.1m to 98 university researchers at historically black colleges and universities (HBCUs) and minority-serving institutions (MIs) for the acquisition of research and scientific equipment. The grants, which range up to $800,000 individually, will support 21 HBCUs and 49 MIs, including one tribal college, across 26 states and the District of Columbia.

07 Oct 24. Chilean Army buys first Colombian MRAPs. Five Armor International Hunter TR-12-24 mine-resistant ambush-protected (MRAP) vehicles have been acquired by the Chilean Army and the Carabineros, a Chilean defence industry source recently confirmed to Janes. The value of the contract is unknown, but Chile bought its first batch of four units for approximately USD1.7m in March 2024. The TR-12-24 are designed based on the International CV chassis with improvements in the angles of entry and exit and implementing improvements in the ventilation side inlets of the engine, making it more efficient in hot climates. A new automated fire extinguishing system is included in addition to new electric locks and mirrors, protective glass mesh, new internal floor with better grip, and a new adjustable step for the weapons station, according to the manufacturer. This award marks an important advancement in Canada’s defence capabilities, ensuring that the Canadian Armed Forces (CAF) are equipped with cutting-edge technology designed to excel in complex and challenging operational environments. The Sophie Ultima, a lightweight, handheld thermal imager, is engineered to deliver extraordinary performance in the field. With a high performance infrared channel, it offers NATO tank recognition range performance of up to 6 kilometres. The continuous optical zoom and wide 20° field of view enable operators to maintain visual contact with targets during detection, recognition, and identification phases, ensuring rapid and precise engagement. Thales will manufacture and maintain the Sophie Ultima at its existing Canadian Electro-Optics Center of Excellence, further strengthening Canada’s defence industrial base. This initiative will create new jobs and spur economic growth, expanding Thales’s current supply chain within Canada. 09 Oct 24. Ultra Intelligence & Communications (Ultra I&C) has secured a contract from the Canadian Armed Forces for the deployment of its remote tactical data link management systems (RTDLMS). The contract, valued at $7m, seeks to bolster Canada’s Tactical Data Link (TDL) infrastructure as part of the Tactical Integrated Command, Control and Communication (TIC3) project. It will see the deployment of Ultra I&C’s RTDLMS and advanced commercial off-the-shelf components across more than 16 sites in Canada. This strategic upgrade aims to enhance the nation’s situational awareness and air defence capabilities, aligning with the TIC3 project’s objective to support a Recognised Air Picture (RAP) through Link-16. 10 Oct 24. Colombia, through its shipyard Cotecmar, has signed an agreement to sell eight shallow draught riverine combat boats (BCFBCs), Cotecmar announced on 29 September. This agreement, for which costs were not revealed, includes training to operate and maintain the boats. BCFBCs are constructed with aluminium hulls with NIJ III level ballistic protection, are 8.6 m long, 2.42 m wide, 1 m tall, and have a 0.34 m draught, according to Cotecmar. The units can travel at a top speed of 24 kt, propelled by two 90 HP Mercury Seapro engines with a range of up to 300 km. According to the Colombian shipyard, these vessels can support a crew of eight, host a Furuno 1623 radar, a Ritchie Supersport SS-1002 compass, and can carry up to 400 kg cargo. They have two different armament configurations: one with two Browning M-2HB QCB 12.7×99 mm machine guns (bow and stern) and seven crew members, and another a Browning M-2HB QCB 12.7×99 mm machine gun in the bow and two FN Herstal M249 5.56×45 mm cannons on port and starboard and eight crew members. SRT Marine Systems plc (‘SRT’), a global provider of maritime domain awareness systems and technologies for security, safety and environmental protection is pleased to advise that it has received a formal contract award notification from a sovereign government Ministry for a contract worth US$213m to deliver an integrated SRT maritime surveillance system. The award is subject only to completion of the formal contract and associated performance bond which are now underway and expected to be completed prior to the end of next month, with implementation commencing immediately thereafter. The contract is for SRT to provide their national coast guard with a new state-of-the-art national maritime surveillance system that integrates numerous multi-sensor surveillance platforms, both fixed and mobile, along with several integrated command centres located across the country. The contract includes the turn-key delivery of the system within 2 years, followed by a 10 year support and maintenance package.
