30 Sep 24. R35010 Radios to NATO Ally. WB GROUP announced the successful delivery of cutting-edge communication solutions to the Navy of a NATO ally. The R35010 personal radios, manufactured by RADMOR company, have passed stringent acceptance tests and are now officially qualified for use within the armed forces of the recipient country. These advanced Polish devices will enhance the capabilities of the naval communications system. As a critical entity of WB GROUP, RADMOR has supplied tactical communication equipment to a European NATO member state. Following successful acceptance testing, the R35010 radios have been approved for deployment within the user country’s navy, with deliveries now underway. The order encompasses R35010 radios along with essential accessories. Produced in Poland, this equipment will significantly enhance the functionality of the shipboard internal communication system, ensuring effective wireless communication in critical operational areas. The signed contract and prompt deliveries lay a robust foundation for ongoing collaboration on future projects. The R35010 radio is a compact and lightweight device designed for immediate deployment. Work will be performed at various locations including, but not limited to, Long Beach, California; San Antonio, Texas; Robins Air Force Base, Georgia; Charleston, South Carolina; McCord AFB, Washington; and various locations around the globe, and is expected to be completed by Oct. 31, 2027. 26 Sept 24. Indra signs a framework contract to modernise the Spanish Army’s GBAD system to identify whether an air platform is a ‘Friend or Foe’. Indra has signed a framework agreement with the Spanish Ministry of Defence to endow the Spanish Army’s ground based air defence system, tasked with responding to any airborne threat, with state-of-the-art capabilities to identify whether an air platform is a friend or foe (IFF system), thus contributing to reinforcing the protection of the airspace, increasing the safety of allied aircraft and preventing friendly fire. The project, awarded to Indra following an open bidding on the month of June with the industry’s main suppliers and recently signed, provides for the implementation of Mode 5/S IFF radar systems to facilitate enhanced positive identification of an air force’s own aircraft. The IFF is a secondary radar which sends an encrypted interrogation that only platforms aware of the codes can decrypt and respond to confirm that it is friendly. (Source: joint-forces.com)
30 Sept 24. Rheinmetall to supply Skyranger 30 for mobile air defence. Rheinmetall has once again won a major order in the field of mobile air defence. The Kingdom of Denmark has contracted with Rheinmetall Air Defence to supply sixteen Skyranger 30 air defence turrets and additional vehicle equipment for an 8×8 wheeled platform for use by the Danish armed forces. The order is worth a figure in the low three-digit m euro range. In addition, the customer has ordered ammunition in the low double-digit m euro range. Deliveries of the serial turrets are scheduled for 2027 and 2028, while a prototype is expected to be delivered in late 2026.
04 Oct 24. Saab has received an additional order from Lithuania for the Mobile Short-Range Air Defence (MSHORAD) solution. The order value is SEK 1.2bn and deliveries are scheduled 2026-2029. Saab announced the initial MSHORAD order from Lithuania in July 2024. With this additional order, a second battery within the Lithuanian armed forces will be provided with Saab’s mobile air defence capability.
03 Oct 24. Terma has received a purchase order from The Danish Ministry of Defence Acquisition and Logistics Organisation (DALO) concerning system integration of the new VSHORAD system for the Royal Danish Army. It is the first order as part of the 30-year framework agreement that Terma and DALO signed in 2023. The solution that Terma will provide for the Royal Danish Army’s 1st Brigade will integrate advanced sensors – such as radar – with cutting-edge effectors. DALO has recently signed a contract with Rheinmetall on the Skyranger 30 as the effector. The entire system will be controlled using Terma’s proprietary command and control software, BMD-Flex and communicate through Terma’s communications infrastructure.

03 Oct 24. The Czech Republic has signed for two Embraer KC/C-390 Millennium tanker-transport aircraft, the country’s defence minister announced on 2 October. Minister of Defence of the Czech Republic Jana Černochová informed parliament of the contract 12 months after theCzech Ministry of Defence (MoD) and the Brazilian manufacturer announced the selection decision in October 2023. According to the minister, the deal is valued at CZK11.3bn (USD493m) minus tax and includes a USD82.3 m offset package for Czech industry. The first aircraft will be delivered to the MoD in 2025, she added. In Czech service, the KC/C-390 will be used for missions such as air transport, air assault operations, aerial resupply, medical evacuation, humanitarian aid, air-to-air refuelling, and firefighting. The two new aircraft will add to the six Airbus C295M/MW and five Let L-410 Turbolet tactical airlifters owned and operated by the Army of the Czech Republic, as well as the NATO Strategic Airlift International Solution (SALIS)- and European Union (EU)/NATO Multinational Multirole Tanker Transport Fleet (MMF)-leased transport programmes. It joins European neighbours Austria, Hungary, the Netherlands, and Portugal in selecting the KC-390, while Embraer is also eyeing regional opportunities in Sweden as well as with the Heavy Airlift Wing (HAW) of the NATO Strategic Airlift Capability (SAC) based in Hungary. LIFT Aircraft (LIFT) announced today that they have been awarded a contract by the US Army Applications Laboratory (AAL) to design a medical multi-mission modular payload, a container that can carry blood supply and casualty evacuations (CASEVAC). LIFT has partnered with Near Earth Autonomy (Near Earth) to address one of the Army’s biggest challenges – the need to autonomously perform these functions within the crucial “golden hour,” the critical period immediately following trauma when rapid medical intervention significantly increases survival rates. 30 Sep 24. Mercury Systems, Inc. (NASDAQ: MRCY, www.mrcy.com), a technology company that delivers mission-critical processing power to the edge, announced today that it signed a contract with Boeing to deliver FPGA processor boards that will support an upgraded refueling system on the U.S. Air Force’s KC-46A tanker aircraft fleet. Mercury’s SCFE3920 boards are an integral part of the next-generation KC-46A Remote Vision System (RVS) 2.0. Designed for high-speed data processing and seamless system integration, Mercury’s boards will connect directly to cameras on the plane to process the high-resolution, color video feeds that provide KC-46A operators with a clear and precise view of the refueling process. Mercury has already delivered hundreds of boards for the upgraded KC-46A refueling system to support development testing. Under the new contract, Mercury will deliver to Boeing approximately 1,500 production boards that will support equipping RVS 2.0 on KC-46 aircraft for the United States and allied nations.

01 Oct 24. Zulu Pods Receives Phase 2 SBIR Award from US Navy. Zulu Pods Inc. has been awarded a Phase 2 Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) award by the Office of Naval Research (ONR), part of the Department of the Navy (DoN). The award will focus on continued efforts to develop novel, innovative fluid delivery systems for next generation jet engines used in Unmanned Aerial Vehicles. The technology will support broader Department of Defense initiatives aimed at rapidly developing and deploying thousands of affordable autonomous systems across various warfighting domains within 18 to 24 months. In Q2 2024, ZPI performed an engine test at the Amherst R&D facility utilizing its flagship product, the ZPod. The test compared a ZPod, which precisely delivers minimum lubrication to the engine bearing, against a combination of fuel and lubricant – an approach widely used throughout the industry today. The grants will support the purchase of major equipment at 64 institutions across 28 states in Fiscal Year 2025, helping them augment current and introduce new capabilities in defense-relevant research areas. One of the Department’s strategic investments in the United States’ scientific ecosystem, the DURIP program equips universities to perform state-of-the-art research that boosts the nation’s technological advantage, while ensuring that the future science, technology, engineering, and mathematics workforce remains second to none. The Department of Defense announced today the award of a $71,157,977 grant as the federal share of a larger $88,969,971 project to Coral Academy of Science Las Vegas, from the Office of Local Defense Community Cooperation, that replaces the existing school at Nellis Air Force Base, Nevada. The project will address facility capacity and condition deficiencies that placed Coral Academy of Science Las Vegas as the 51st school on the 2019 Deputy Secretary of Defense “Public Schools on Military Installations Priority List” (Priority List). Upon completion, 1600 kindergarten through eighth grade students will be supported through the project.

The Department of Defense (DoD) announced today a $15m award via the Defense Production Act Investments (DPAI) program to Lehigh Heavy Forge in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania, which will provide press equipment upgrades and enhance their heavy forging production capacity. Specifically, the award will fund a new forging manipulator that improves the capacity of their 10,000-ton open die forging press, heat treatment furnace enhancements, and the implementation of an automated ultrasonic forging testing program. This effort supports the 2024 National Defense Industrial Strategy to expand support for domestic production to increase supply chain resilience.
02 Oct 24. RTX to Develop Ultra-Wide Bandgap Semiconductors for DARPA. Raytheon, an RTX (NYSE: RTX) business, has been awarded a three-year, two-phase contract from DARPA to develop foundational ultra-wide bandgap semiconductors, or UWBGS, based on diamond and aluminum nitride technology that revolutionize semiconductor electronics with increased power delivery and thermal management in sensors and other electronic applications. During phase one of the contract, the Raytheon Advanced Technology team will develop diamond and aluminum nitride semiconductor films and their integration onto electronic devices. Phase two will focus on optimizing and maturing the diamond and aluminum nitride technology onto larger diameter wafers for sensor applications. The unique material properties of UWBGS offer several advantages over traditional semiconductor technologies, enabling highly compact, ultra-high power radio frequency switches, limiters, and power amplifiers. Their high thermal conductivity also allows the ability to operate at higher temperatures and in more extreme environments. The team’s goal is to spearhead the development of these materials towards devices that are well suited for both existing and future radar and communication systems with extended capability and range, including cooperative sensing, electronic warfare, directed energy, and circuitry in high-speed weapon systems such as hypersonics. 26 Sept 24. Anduril Lattice to provide counter drone defence for Royal Australian Air Force. Anduril Australia has closed a contract for a three-year trial with the Royal Australian Air Force (RAAF) to demonstrate the company’s air and ground defence capabilities at RAAF Base Darwin which will support the defence of Australia’s northern defence bases against drones and other threats. Anduril will deploy a range of active and passive sensors, and kinetic and non-kinetic effectors tailored to RAAF Base Darwin’s specific security requirements and Darwin’s environment. The system is powered by Lattice, an open architecture software platform that enables integration and command and control of Anduril and third party sensors and effectors. Lattice allows for persistent awareness and autonomous detection, classification, and tracking of objects of interest. It alerts users to potential ground or airborne threats and prompts users with options for mitigation or engagement. The contract with the Royal Australian Air Force will allow Anduril Australia to deliver counter drone and counter intrusion as a capability-as-a-service. Anduril Australia will maintain continuous hardware and software system updates, and develop and deploy new capability in an effort to ensure the system remains relevant and effective. 27 Sep 24. Australia – Advanced Anti-Radiation Guided Missiles-Extended Range. The State Department has made a determination approving a possible Foreign Military Sale to the Government of Australia of Advanced Anti-Radiation Guided Missiles-Extended Range and related equipment for an estimated cost of $405m. The Defense Security Cooperation Agency delivered the required certification notifying Congress of this possible sale today. The Government of Australia has requested to buy up to one hundred (100) Advanced Anti-Radiation Guided Missiles-Extended Range (AARGM-ER) with global positioning system (GPS) precise positioning system (PPS) provided by Selective Availability Anti-Spoofing Module (SAASM) or M-Code; up to twenty-four (24) AGM-88G AARGM-ER guidance sections (spares); and up to twenty-four (24) AGM-88G AARGM-ER control sections (spares). The following non-MDE items will also be included: missile containers; component parts and support equipment; repair; software (classified and unclassified); publications (classified and unclassified); training (classified and unclassified); transportation; U.S. Government and contractor engineering support; and other related elements of logistics and program support. The estimated total cost is $405m. This proposed sale will support the foreign policy and national security objectives of the United States. Australia is one of our most important allies in the Western Pacific. The strategic location of this political and economic power contributes significantly to ensuring peace and economic stability in the Western Pacific. It is vital to the U.S. national interest to assist our ally in developing and maintaining a strong and ready self-defense capability. 27 Sept 24. Japan’s Ministry of Defense (MoD) has agreed to adopt the Glide Phase Interceptor (GPI) concept proposed by Northrop Grumman, which will most certainly go onboard the Japan Maritime Self-Defense Force’s (JMSDF’s) future fleet of ballistic missile defence (BMD)-specific ships. This agreement to move forward with Northrop Grumman was made in conjunction with the US Missile Defense Agency (MDA), the Japan MoD disclosed in a statement issued on 25 September. In the statement, the MoD noted the US MDA had signed a basic design contract with Raytheon and Northrop Grumman in 2022, although requirements for the interceptor, which would also fulfil Washington’s BMD requirement, were conceived in 2021. Japan came onboard the programme in August 2023 and signed an agreement to co-operate on the project in May 2024. Eventually, the two countries decided to further develop the programme based on Northrop Grumman’s proposal after evaluating the offerings from both companies based on factors such as performance, cost, and delivery timeline, the MoD added. With the selection of Northrop Grumman’s GPI concept, Japan would now proceed to award contracts to domestic companies that can design and manufacture selected components of the GPI. (Source: Janes)

Poland’s WB Group has secured a contract from South Korea’s Defense Acquisition Program Administration (DAPA) to deliver its loitering munitions to the Republic of Korea (RoK) Armed Forces. Speaking to Janes at the Korea Army International Defense Industry Exhibition (KADEX) 2024 held at Gyeryongdae from 2 to 6 October, John Bason, adviser to WB Group, said the company will supply its Warmate-3 loitering munitions to the RoK Armed Forces. WB Group expects to start and complete the deliveries of Warmate-3 in 2025, Bason said, declining to comment on the value of the contract. DAPA is acquiring more than 100 Warmate-3 loitering munitions from WB Group. According to company specifications, Warmate-3 has a wingspan of 1.6 m, an operational range of 30 km, an operational speed of 80 km/h, and an operating ceiling of 3,000 m above mean sea level (AMSL). Warmate-3 has a maximum endurance of 1 h and can be equipped with high-explosive or thermobaric warheads to attack targets. Bason said the RoK Armed Forces can deploy Warmate-3 loitering munitions individually or in swarms.
