30 Jul 24. Marshall has been awarded a contract to produce composite torpedo launcher tubes for SEA, part of Cohort PLC, in support of two major international naval vessel programmes. Production will run from 2024 to 2026, with Marshall contracted to manufacture and deliver composite torpedo launcher tubes and associated equipment for integration into SEA’s Torpedo Launcher Systems.

30 Jul 24. Kromek (AIM: KMK), a leading developer of radiation and bio-detection technology solutions for the advanced imaging and CBRN detection segments, is pleased to announce that its D3M detector has been named as the Personal Radiation Detector (“PRD”) under the UK Government Resilience Framework (the “Framework”). The Group has received its first order under the Framework from Merseyside Fire & Rescue Service, which will use the D3M for its Detection, Identification and Monitoring (“DIM”) vehicles.   The Framework is designed to strengthen the UK’s resilience system to prevent risks manifesting or crises happening where possible, addressing all serious threats to public safety and security. It focuses on the foundational building blocks of resilience, setting out a plan to 2030 to strengthen the frameworks, systems and capabilities that underpin the UK’s resilience to all civil contingencies risks.   The D3M is the only PRD that has been pre-approved for purchase under the Framework, which is scheduled to be in place for four years. As a result, all blue light service operators in the UK, such as fire, police, ambulances and first responders, can purchase the D3M detector for projects under the Framework without going through a separate approval process. Merseyside Fire & Rescue service is the first of many potential customers in the UK to have bought the D3M under their Detection, Identification and Monitoring (DIM) Equipment Uplift project, which involves acquiring equipment to enhance their capabilities for detection of Chemical, Biological, Radiological, and Nuclear (“CBRN”) threats. The customers are all blue light services in the UK – ambulance, fire and police. This is a sole supplier framework for this a category of products which allows any blue light organisation to buy directly without tendering. This updates an earlier release of this contract showing the possible new customers.

 

29 Jul 24. QinetiQ, has won a £15m ($19.2m) contract to run a data management system known as Thundercloud for the UK Ministry of Defence (MoD). Thundercloud collates, analyses and distributes meteorological and oceanographic data at all security classifications for the joint force through a secure network of systems to support land, sea and air operations. This contract will continue to support the situational awareness of the British military as a joint force, preparing services across all domains to respond to all manner of weather conditions around the world. This system-of-systems was originally developed in the 1980s Defence Evaluation and Research Agency and transitioned to QinetiQ management in 2001 where it has been run and maintained through several upgrade cycles. QinetiQ has retained the support contract to manage the capability through competitions in 2014 and 2019, with this latest round of competition seeing QinetiQ’s expertise called on for a further two years with a focus on Agile change delivery. QinetiQ has partnered with small and medium enterprises, including the Hampshire-based technical managed services company, Thorn LTD, which will provide a key role in engineering support, as well as other SMEs providing specialist support. 30 Jul 24. Cohort subsidiary Chess Dynamics (Chess) has been awarded three contracts for Air Defence systems produced by Rheinmetall Air Defence AG, totalling more than £25m. Under the contracts, Chess will provide electro-optical tracking surveillance systems and multi-sensor units. Work will commence immediately, and deliveries will continue out to 2028.

 

01 Aug 24. HENSOLDT is providing massive support for the German ‘European Sky Shield Initiative’ ESSI: As part of an order from Diehl Defence worth more than 100m euros, we are supplying our high-performance TRML-4D radars, including a maintenance and training package, to Latvia and Slovenia.  The radars will be deployed in the two ESSI countries as part of the IRIS-T SLM air defence system. This means that HENSOLDT currently has more than 80 air defence radars of various ranges under contract as part of the ESSI initiative alone.

 

30 Jul 24. HENSOLDT is further expanding its position as a national technology champion for air defence sensors. Rheinmetall Air Defence has awarded HENSOLDT a contract to supply SPEXER air defence radars for use in the new Skyranger 30 anti-aircraft gun tank (FlakPz). The order is worth almost 100m euros. With the Skyranger 30, Rheinmetall Air Defence is providing the successor to the Gepard FlakPz in the Bundeswehr’s newly established air defence force. With the SPEXER 2000, this will be equipped with a radar whose high detection performance will enable the effectors of the new FlakPz to develop their full potential. The decisive factor here is the extraordinarily high quality of target classification and the ability to precisely track targets even while on the move or in flight. Based on a framework agreement concluded with Rheinmetall Air Defense in 2023, the SPEXER 2000M 3D MkIII is part of Rheinmetall’s offering to various end users. The radars now ordered will be used to equip the Skyranger tanks of Germany and Austria. Denmark has also announced a corresponding procurement. The German Skyranger 30 is based on the GTK Boxer, additionally equipped with the Stinger guided missile. The Austrian system is based on the Pandur EVO. In addition to the 30mm revolver cannon, the Austrian Skyranger 30 will be equipped with the Mistral guided missile. The SPEXER radar family offers high-performance surveillance radars for various ranges for the automatic detection and classification of ground, sea and low-flying air targets. The SPEXER 2000 is used in the German cUAS field camp (ASUL), qualified air defense, HoWiSM (high-energy laser for drone defense) and NNbS programs, among others. HENSOLDT has decades of experience with radar systems for air defense and is actively driving the further development of key technologies in this field. In addition to SPEXER, the company’s portfolio includes the TRML-4D high-performance radar, which has proven its worth in Ukraine, the Twinvis passive radar and radars for securing ship and air traffic. Both the TRML-4D and the SPEXER are part of the Bundeswehr’s NNbS air defense system for close and short-range protection, which was commissioned in January.

 

29 Jul 24. The Bundesamt für Ausrüstung, Informationstechnik und Nutzung der Bundeswehr (BAAINBw), Germany’s Federal Office of Bundeswehr Equipment, Information Technology, and In-Service Support, announced in a press release on 25 July that it has awarded KNDS Deutschland a contract to upgrade the German Army’s Fennek reconnaissance vehicles. The BAAINBw said 30 Fennek 1A2 reconnaissance vehicles and 50 Joint Fire Support Team (JFST) Fenneks would receive the latest standard Beobachtungs- und Aufklärungsausstattung (BAA) III observation and reconnaissance sets. It added that the upgrade would give the Bundeswehr reconnaissance and identification capabilities adapted for national and alliance defence, with an operational reserve of BAA IIIs that will increase the vehicles’ readiness for training, exercises, and operations. Deliveries of the new BAA IIIs, including the operational reserve, are scheduled for 2027–29. The BAA is equipped with a thermal imaging device, day camera, and laser rangefinder on a rotatable and tiltable platform mounted on an extendable mast. The upgrade will also include the integration of a laser target designator for laser-guided munitions. The BAAINBw expects the upgrade to standardise a large part of the German Army’s Fennek fleet. The Norwegian government has signed a contract with Kongsberg Defence & Aerospace to procure new NASAMS (Norwegian Advanced Surface-to-Air Missile System) air defense systems, a move aimed at enhancing the country’s defense capabilities against aerial threats. 01 Aug 24. The Spanish Army has signed a framework agreement with Rheinmetall to supply around half a million modular propellant systems for 155mm extended-range artillery ammunition. The order is worth up to €205m and is scheduled for delivery from mid-2024 to the end of 2025. It was booked in July 2024. The order includes an extension option for a further two years, which could significantly increase its value. Against the backdrop of the Russian attack on Ukraine, the Spanish army also intends to replenish its ammunition stocks. In this context, the procurement of propellant charge systems for the M109 and SIAC 155mm calibre howitzers is taking place. The current contract signing is one of several orders placed by the Spanish army this year. In April 2024, Rheinmetall announced that the Group had received an order to supply mortar shells in the high double-digit m euro range. In March 2024, Rheinmetall received an order to supply 155mm artillery ammunition worth over €200m by the end of 2025. Rheinmetall is one of the world’s leading manufacturers of large-calibre ammunition and propellant systems. In modern artillery, projectiles and propelling charges are loaded separately in order to achieve different ranges.

 

31 Jul 24. Thales has been entrusted with the upkeep of critical components and peripherals for the mobile threat simulators (Mobs). These simulators are instrumental in training German forces aircrews to counteract ground-to-air missile threats in authentic combat scenarios. This three-year contract is the result of a strong partnership and trust constructed with the Federal Office of Bundeswehr Equipment, Information Technology and In-Service Support (BAAINBw). This collaboration is a cornerstone of the Polygone program, a tri-national initiative aiming at preparing the German forces. Under the Polygone program, a comprehensive data bank has been established, incorporating both aircraft metrics and Thales high-tech data systems. This integration provides the crews with a robust analysis and precise debriefing of the use and efficiency of their aircraft’s self-protection equipment.

31 Jul 24. Fincantieri announced that Orizzonte Sistemi Navali (OSN), a joint venture between Fincantieri and Leonardo, has secured a €1.5bn contract with OCCAR for the construction of two new-generation FREMM frigates, named “FREMM EVO,” for the Italian Navy. Scheduled for delivery in 2029 and 2030, these state-of-the-art vessels will significantly enhance the Italian Navy’s capabilities. The “FREMM EVO” frigates will feature advanced technology and superior performance, including cutting-edge combat management systems, radar sensors, electronic warfare, and anti-drone capabilities. These advancements will ensure the Italian Navy remains at the forefront of maritime defence technology.

 

26 Jul 24. In a €1.6bn ($1.74bn) deal, Intermarine and Leonardo will supply the Italian Navy with five minehunters, poised to improve maritime security and seabed surveillance. This agreement, orchestrated through a temporary grouping of companies, marks advancing naval technology and operational capabilities. The contract was signed with the Directorate of Naval Armaments of the General Secretariat of Defence and National Armaments Directorate. Intermarine, leading the consortium, will manage the design and construction of the minehunter platforms, while Leonardo will supply and integrate the combat systems. Leveraging R&D investments in materials and manufacturing technologies, these minehunters are designed to perform a range of missions. Beyond traditional mine clearance, they will undertake seabed surveillance to safeguard underwater infrastructure like oil pipelines and data networks. The vessels will be constructed at Intermarine’s Sarzana shipyard. Leonardo’s contribution, the SADOC 4 command system, sensors, and sonar will equip the minehunters with operational efficacy. The State Department has made a determination approving a possible Foreign Military Sale to the Government of Slovakia of AH-1Z Attack Helicopters and related equipment and services for an estimated cost of $600m. The Defense Security Cooperation Agency delivered the required certification notifying Congress of this possible sale today. The Government of Slovakia has requested to buy twelve (12) AH-1Z attack helicopters; twenty-six (26) T-700 GE 401C engines (24 installed, 2 spares); one thousand six hundred eighty (1,680) Advanced Precision Kill Weapon Systems (APKWS), WGU-59/B; and fourteen (14) Honeywell embedded global positioning systems (GPS)/inertial navigation systems (INS) (EGIs) (12 installed, 2 spares). 25 Jul 24. Belgium – Small Diameter Bomb-Increment II. The State Department has made a determination approving a possible Foreign Military Sale to the Government of Belgium of Small Diameter Bomb-Increment II and related elements of logistics and program support for an estimated cost of $115m. The Defense Security Cooperation Agency delivered the required certification notifying Congress of this possible sale today. The Government of Belgium has requested to buy up to one hundred ninety-six (196) Guided Bomb Unit (GBU)-53/B Small Diameter Bombs-Increment II (SDB-II) All-Up-Rounds (AURs). Also included are SDB-II Weapons Load Crew Trainers (WLCT); training aids and devices; spare and repair parts, consumables, accessories, and repair and return support; unclassified software delivery and support; unclassified publications and technical documentation; major modifications and maintenance support; training and training equipment; munitions support and support equipment; transportation support; studies and surveys; U.S. Government and contractor engineering, technical, and logistics support services; and other related elements of logistics and program support. 29 Jul 24. The Netherlands has signed an agreement with the US to acquire JASSM-ER missiles to bolster its defence capabilities. The Netherlands has enhanced its national defence by signing a Letter of Offer and Acceptance (LoA) to purchase the Joint Air-to-Surface Standoff Missile Extended Range (JASSM-ER) from Lockheed Martin. This agreement was formalised on July 29, 2024. This latest development is noteworthy, following a foreign military sales agreement signed in February. The February deal paved the way for this next step of the acquisition. In February, Lockheed Martin secured a $908m contract to supply the Netherlands with Joint Air-to-Surface Standoff Missiles Extended Range (JASSM-ER). This deal includes 120 JASSM-ER missiles and related equipment. The acquisition will enable the Netherlands to enhance its long-range precision strike capabilities, integrating the missiles with its F-35A and F-16A/B aircraft. The contract ceiling is more than $417m. The Technology Insertion Hardware TI-26 indefinite delivery/indefinite quantity contract will provide design, procurement, production, sparing, test, installation, and support of displays, workstations, processors, and network systems; the production of subsequent systems, kits and enclosures; and engineering and technical services. The contract was awarded by the U.S. Navy’s Naval Undersea Warfare Center, Keyport. TI-26 is the latest generation of a continuously evolving family of display, processor, and network systems in support of the US Navy’s Submarine Warfare Federated Tactical System family of systems required on U.S. Navy submarines. 31 Jul 24. General Atomics Aeronautical Systems, Inc. (GA-ASI) has been awarded a $98m contract as Lead Systems Integrator for Project Red 5. The Office of the Under Secretary of Defense (OUSD) Project, run by the Test Resource Management Center (TRMC), will prototype advanced autonomous air-to-air capability to provide adversary or “red” air training profiles. GA-ASI will operate two of its company-owned MQ-20 Avenger® Unmanned Aircraft Systems and provide mission autonomy software that integrates cutting-edge sensors, data links and other advanced mission systems. Project Red 5 will prototype full profile autonomous air-to-air missions to enable current fourth and fifth generation Blue Force fighters to train against robust, autonomous “red air” surrogate platforms.

 

26 Jul 24. Raytheon Co., Tucson, Arizona, has been awarded a $325,000,000 ceiling increase modification (P00010) to previously awarded contract FA8672-19-D-0001 for the StormBreaker® Small Diameter Bomb Increment II (SDB II, GBU-53/B). The modification brings the total cumulative face value of the contract from $275,000,000 to $600,000,000. Work will be performed in Tucson, Arizona, and is expected to be completed by Dec. 31, 2026. No funds are being obligated at the time of award. The Air Force Life Cycle Management Center, Eglin Air Force Base, Florida, is the contracting activity.

SES Space & Defense, a wholly-owned subsidiary of SES, has been awarded a multi-year contract worth USD 46.8m by the U.S. Air Force (USAF) Air Combat Command (ACC) to provide Geostationary (GEO) Ku-band satellite services in support of the ACC remotely piloted aircraft (RPA) training and testing program. SES Space & Defense will use SES’s GEO high-throughput satellite (HTS) fleet to provide ground-to-air and air-to-ground transmissions coverage over the continental United States (CONUS), Hawaii, Alaska, and the Pacific Ocean for airborne operations. Sikorsky Aircraft Corp., a Lockheed Martin Co., Stratford, Connecticut, is awarded a not-to-exceed $120,265,023, firm-fixed-price modification (P00001) to a previously awarded contract (N0001924C0009). This modification adds scope to procure additional long-lead time materials to support 21 full rate production, Lot Nine, CH-53K King Stallion aircraft. Work will be performed in Stratford, Connecticut, and is expected to be completed in March 2025. Fiscal 2024 aircraft procurement (Navy) funds in the amount of $120,265,023 will be obligated at the time of award, none of which will expire at the end of the current fiscal year. The Department of Defense (DoD) today announced an additional five awards totaling $9m for the Distributed Bioindustrial Manufacturing Program (DBIMP) to expand the domestic supply of ingredients and materials for U.S. supply chains by building bioproduction infrastructure. The awardees include ARCTOS Technology Solutions in Beavercreek, Ohio; CleanJoule in Salt Lake City; Lygos in Berkeley, California; Synonym in New York City; and Visolis, in Hayward, California. The awards are some of more than 30 expected to be conferred as part of the White House’s Executive Order 14081, “Advancing Biotechnology and Biomanufacturing Innovation for a Sustainable, Safe, and Secure American Bioeconomy,” aimed at bolstering America’s bioeconomic strengths while helping the Department achieve advanced defense capabilities. Amprius Technologies, Inc. (“Amprius” or the “Company”) (NYSE: AMPX), a leader in next-generation lithium-ion batteries with its Silicon Anode Platform, today announced that it was selected by the U.S. Army to develop a large form factor 500 Wh/kg SiMaxx™ high-energy cell for electric mobility applications in the defense sector. The $1.9m contract that comes with the award will be used over the next 18 months to create the large form factor prototype 500 Wh/kg SiMaxx cell. The xTechPrime Competition, held from April through June, challenged small businesses to work together in teams with technology integrators to submit innovative solutions that can contribute to the U.S. Army’s modernization goals. Amprius partnered with AeroVironment (AV) as the technology integrator for AV’s high altitude pseudo satellite (HAPS) that competed in the Autonomy Technology Ecosystem category. CACI International Inc (NYSE: CACI) announced today that it has been awarded a five-year task order valued at up to $319m to provide intelligence systems expertise to the U.S. Army, Communications-Electronics Command (CECOM), Software Engineering Center (SEC), Electronic Warfare and Sensors Directorate (IEWSD), Army Reprogramming Analysis Team-Program Office (ARAT-PO). Taking a CI/CD (continuous integration/continuous delivery) software cycle approach, CACI will provide domestic customers and foreign military partners with high fidelity threat and signals analysis, modeling and simulation and testing, reprogramming support, and delivery of new mission data sets. Qinetiq Inc., Lorton, Virginia, was awarded a $49,457,500 cost-plus-fixed-fee contract for to modify, enhance, operate, maintain, and deploy a Data Collection Sensor System on vehicles/platforms. Bids were solicited via the internet with one received. Work locations and funding will be determined with each order, with an estimated completion date of July 31, 2029. Army Contracting Command, Aberdeen Proving Ground, Maryland, is the contracting activity (W911QX-24-D-0019).

29 Jul 24. Elbit Systems Ltd. (NASDAQ: ESLT and TASE: ESLT) (“Elbit Systems” or the “Company”) announced today that it was awarded a contract worth approximately $190m to supply its Iron Sting laser and GPS-guided mortar munition to the Israeli Ministry of Defense. The contract will be performed over a period of 2 years. Iron Sting is a precision-guided mortar munition, launched from a 120mm mortar, designed to accurately target and destroy objectives, utilizing both immune GPS and laser guidance technology. It has a range of up to 10 kilometers. Iron Sting features a multi-mode fuze with Point Detonation (PD), Point Detonation Delay (PDD), and Proximity Sensor (PRX) operating modes. The loading time is approximately 15 seconds.

 

01 Aug 24. Elbit Systems Ltd. (NASDAQ: ESLT and TASE: ESLT) (“Elbit Systems” or the “Company”) announced today, that it was awarded a contract in an amount of approximately $340m for the supply of ammunition to the Israeli Ministry of Defense (IMOD). The contract will be performed over a period of 10 years. Elbit Systems will establish a manufacturing facility to produce the ammunition.

25 Jul 24. Australia signed a A$2.2bn ($1.4bn) four-year contract with state-owned submarine builder ASC to upgrade the navy’s Collins class submarines. The “sustainment contract” is part of a government pledge to keep the diesel-electric powered Collins-class fleet “a potent strike and deterrence capability”, Defence Industry Minister Pat Conroy said in a statement. The contract will be “directly ensuring job security for more than 1,100 highly skilled workers”, with the work carried out in the towns of Henderson in Western Australia and Osborne in South Australia, Conroy said. Osborne is where ASC and Britain’s BAE Systems will jointly build Australia’s fleet of nuclear-powered submarines, the core component of the 2021 AUKUS pact between Britain, the U.S. and Australia. Until that work begins later this decade, the shipyard is where much of the maintenance is performed on the existing Collins-class fleet. Conroy said it was part of the centre-left government’s A$4 to A$5 bn commitment to the submarines, which are planned to operate into the 2040s. (Source: Google/Reuters)

 

02 Aug 24. Portugal’s EID, which specialises in military communications systems company, announced on 30 July that it has won a deal to supply two naval integrated communications systems (ICS) to Indonesian shipbuilder PT PAL. EID said its Integrated Communications Control System (ICCS) will be fitted to the two new Tarlac-class landing platform docks (LPDs) – which are designated Strategic Sealift Vessels (SSVs) by the Philippine Navy – constituting the second batch of four SSVs ordered by the Philippines. The latest success brings the total number of EID’s ICCS solution to over 50 vessels in five Southeast Asian navies, the company added. (Source: AMR)

29 Jul 24. Taiwan’s fighter pilots will benefit from the continued purchase of F-16 training simulators programme from the US division of CAE, a Canadian modelling developer. This contract modification, worth more than $35m (T$1.15bn, brings the cumulative value of the Foreign Military Sale, through the US Department of Defense, to $58.29m. Work will take place in Arlington, Texas, and is expected to reach completion by 30 April 2026.  The US government is committed to supporting the island to ensure the military balance in the region. Lately, the US offered various F-16 spares and repair parts, and, more than a year ago, they provided infrared search and track systems. (Source: airforce-technology.com)

 

31 Jul 24. EOS signs $9m contract with Australian Defence Force Joint Capabilities Division. Canberra-based defence company Electro Optic Systems has secured a $9 m contract with the Australian Defence Force Joint Capabilities Division to further develop space capabilities. Electro Optic Systems’ (EOS) Space Technologies business gained the $9 m contract in addition to a $5 m contract that was announced on 15 April 2024, for delivery in 2024. The project is a significant strategic opportunity for EOS and is consistent with EOS’ stated strategy of securing third-party funding for new capability development work in Space Technologies, according to the company. 31 Jul 24. Under a new contract worth half-a-billion-dollars, the US defence prime, Northrop Grumman, has been tasked to support 11 global air forces with F-16 radar components. Specifically, the contract provides for the repair and return of AN/APG-68 version 9 components through the US Foreign Military Sales procurement route. Work will be performed at Linthicum Heights, Maryland, and is expected to be completed by 30 July 2030.  Chile, Egypt, Greece, Indonesia, Iraq, Oman, Morocco, Pakistan, Poland, Thailand and Türkiye will benefit from this offering. It is worth noting that most of these countries countries wholly rely on the US defence industrial base to sustain their F-16 fleets. (Source: airforce-technology.com)
