A significant number of Lightweight Multirole Missiles (LMM) have been ordered by the Government from Thales UK for the supply of the versatile, precision weapon to UK Armed Forces. A Royal Navy Wildcat helicopter equipped with the Martlet missile system. The order is worth £176m and will equip current and future short-range air defence capabilities for the British Army, such as Stormer combat vehicles, and be fired by the Royal Navy’s Martlet maritime anti-surface missile system deployed from Wildcat helicopters. 26 Jul 24. Rheinmetall manufactures 81mm mortar ammunition for the Swiss armed forces. The Düsseldorf-based technology group Rheinmetall has been commissioned by the Swiss Confederation to manufacture and supply 81mm mortar cargo ammunition. The total value of the order is in the mid double-digit million euro range. The entire scope of supply comprises 81mm MX2-KM mortar weapons from Rheinmetall EXPAL Munitions SA as well as 81mm mortar cartridges Cargo for illumination white light, illumination infrared and smoke discharge based on RP (Red Phospor), which are manufactured by Rheinmetall Waffe Munition GmbH at the Neuenburg am Rhein plant. The delivery is scheduled to be completed by 2025 and includes various additional services as part of the product launch. The cartridges are qualified for the MX2-KM mortar of the Swiss armed forces and, together with the weapon system, form a mortar system in which both the ammunition and the weapon system are manufactured by Rheinmetall. At the end of the qualification measures, the cargo cartridges were verified at a test site on the Spanish coast. The order underscores Rheinmetall’s expertise in the production of state-of-the-art steep-fire mortar ammunition.

23 Jul 24. OSI announced the contract for a complete Integrated Navigation and Tactical System bridge for the Portuguese Navy’s state-of-the-art MultiPurpose Vessel. The vessel, to be built by Damen Shipyards Group in their Galati Shipyard in Romania, is an innovative 107m platform designed to support Oceanic Research, Search and Rescue, Emergency relief and uniquely, Naval operations to perform as a UxV Mother Ship. De Havilland Aircraft of Canada Limited (De Havilland Canada) announced a purchase agreement for a Twin Otter Guardian 400 aircraft with an undisclosed European country for surveillance operations. The Twin Otter Guardian, renowned for its performance and adaptability, will enable this country’s air support unit to operate with greater precision and effectiveness, reinforcing their commitment to safeguarding their region. The aircraft is scheduled for delivery in mid-2025. The Twin Otter Guardian 400 aircraft is designed to meet the unique operational requirements of this police force and is equipped with a certified Airborne Technologies’ mission system. 18 Jul 24. Czech Republic – Hellfire Missiles and APKWS. The State Department has made a determination approving a possible Foreign Military Sale to the Government of the Czech Republic of Hellfire Missiles and Advanced Precision Kill Weapon System and related elements of logistics and program support for an estimated cost of $138.26m. The Defense Security Cooperation Agency delivered the required certification notifying Congress of this possible sale today. The Government of the Czech Republic has requested to buy two hundred (200) Hellfire Air-to-Ground Missiles, AGM-114R; four (4) Hellfire Captive Air Training Missiles (CATM); and six hundred (600) WGU-59A/B Advanced Precision Kill Weapon System (APKWS) II (single variant). The following non-MDE is also included: support equipment; dummy cartridge rounds; containers; training material; inert components; publications; repair of repairables; and training and technical support. The estimated total cost is $138.26m. This proposed sale will support the foreign policy goals and national security objectives of the United States by improving the security of a NATO Ally that is an important force for political stability and economic progress in Europe. The proposed sale will improve the Czech Republic’s capability to strengthen its homeland defense and deter regional threats. This will contribute to its military goals of updating capability while further enhancing interoperability with the United States and other allies. The Czech Republic will have no difficulty absorbing this equipment into its armed forces. The proposed sale of this equipment and support will not alter the basic military balance in the region. 25 Jul 24. Terma announced a new contract with NASA’s Langley Research Center in Hampton, Virginia. This collaboration will see the integration of Terma’s advanced STAMP product into NASA’s environmental test chambers. NASA Langley Research Center has selected Terma to enhance the data management and operational capabilities of its environmental test chambers. These chambers simulate the vacuum of space, allowing for rigorous testing of space-bound equipment. 24 Jul 24. Rheinmetall has now received its first important order from the Ukrainian government for the construction of an ammunition factory in the Ukraine, which was announced in February 2024, and marks the starting point for the realisation of the project. The order for the Duesseldorf-based technology group Rheinmetall covers the complete technical equipment of the factory through to commissioning. This involves a total value ranged in a low three-digit m euro range, which will be booked as incoming order at the start of the third quarter of 2024. It is foreseen to begin in short term and to be completed within a few years. The intention is to start the ammunition production in the Ukraine within 24 months. Together with its Ukrainian joint venture partner, Rheinmetall will also be responsible for operating the plant. Measures are currently being taken in the Ukraine to prepare the necessary infrastructure. A joint venture between Rheinmetall and a Ukrainian state-owned company in operating the ammunition plant is about to be established. This was announced at a side-discussion at the Munich Security Conference in February 2024. In June 2024, the CEO of Rheinmetall AG, Armin Papperger, and the Ukrainian Minister for Strategic Industries, Oleksandr Kamyshin, signed an agreement to expand the strategic cooperation at the “Ukraine Recovery Conference” in Berlin. A few days earlier, they opened an armour plant in western Ukraine, which is operated by the joint venture Rheinmetall Ukrainian Defence Industry LLC. The first Lynx Infantry Fighting Vehicle (IFV) from Rheinmetall is to be handed over to the Ukrainian armed forces before the end of this year, and local production is to commence as soon as possible.

24 Jul 24. The Taiwanese government has signed a contract with the United States to procure infrared search and track (IRST) pods for its Lockheed Martin F-16V Block 70/72 Viper fleet. On 12 July the contract announcement appeared on the Taiwanese government’s e-procurement website. According to the contract note, the IRST system and 16 other items will be procured at a cost of TWD11.2bn (USD341.4m). The contract is active from 25 June 2024 to 31 December 2030. The announcement comes 10 months after the US Defense Security Cooperation Agency (DSCA) announced a possible sale of the pods under the Foreign Military Sales (FMS) programme in August 2023. At the time, DSCA estimated the cost of the procurement at USD500m. Taiwan did not specify which IRST system it is procuring. The bid award notice lacks additional information associated with tender notices. Taiwan’s Ministry of National Defense (MND) has previously said that it intends to procure the “latest models” of IRST systems developed for the Lockheed Martin F-16V Block 70 fighter aircraft. Horizon Technologies’ BlackFish™ technology (which geolocates and monitors L-band emitters such as SatPhones) is the key to Horizon’s Multi-Domain Amber™ ISR Network Products. Horizon Technologies’ ISR technology is embedded as an ISR Node on manned aircraft (rotary and fixed wing), UAVs, ships, terrestrial ground stations (AmberPersistent™), and in space, on LEO (Low Earth Orbit) Amber™ SIGINT satellites.
