02 Jul 24. The UK Ministry of Defence has issued BAE Systems a four-year Sting Ray Mid Life Upgrade (SRMLU) Assessment Phase (AP) contract, valued at £60.1m ($76m), to fund development of the new Sting Ray Mod 2 lightweight torpedo design. In a Monday tender notice, London said the contract had been awarded on June 28 and covers the “Assessment Phase for the upgrade of the current, in service UK Ministry of Defence Lightweight Torpedo.” Besides the timeframe of the contract, London failed to share additional details of the deal. BAE Systems deferred comment to the UK MoD when asked about it. The Sting Ray Mod 1 torpedo is currently in service with the UK Royal Navy, Royal Air Force and the Norwegian Armed Forces. Mainly used for anti-submarine warfare, and air-launched from frigates, helicopters or maritime patrol aircraft, it is capable of defeating “threats of fast, deep-diving, double-hulled submarines operating in shallow littoral waters,” according to BAE company literature. The Norwegian government has ordered new NASAMS air defence systems from Kongsberg Defence & Aerospace (KONGSBERG), which will strengthen the country’s defence capabilities to combat aerial threats. The contract has a value of up to approximately NOK 4.8bn, including options, with expected deliveries from 2027. The contract with the Norwegian Defence Material Agency (NDMA) includes new multi-missile canister launchers and new Fire Distribution Centers for NASAMS, replacing equipment previously donated to Ukraine. 04 Jul 24. HENSOLDT is providing massive support for the German ‘European Sky Shield Initiative’ ESSI: As part of an order from Diehl Defence worth more than 100m euros, HENSOLDT is supplying its high-performance TRML-4D radars, including a maintenance and training package, to Latvia and Slovenia. The radars will be deployed in the two ESSI countries as part of the IRIS-T SLM air defence system. This means that HENSOLDT currently has more than 80 air defence radars of various ranges under contract as part of the ESSI initiative alone. The TRML-4D has delivered exceptionally good detection performance in Ukraine and prevailed against strong competition during live tests in Latvia. It is based on the latest AESA (Active Electronically Scanned Array) radar technology and ensures the rapid detection and tracking of around 1,500 targets within a radius of up to 250 kilometres. It is capable of quickly and reliably detecting and tracking all types of air targets – cruise missiles, rockets, drones and aircraft – and classifying them for engagement. HENSOLDT has decades of experience with radar systems for air defence and is actively driving the further development of key technologies in this field. In addition to the TRML-4D high-performance radar, the company’s portfolio includes the SPEXER short-range radar, the Twinvis passive radar and radars for securing ship and air traffic. Both the TRML-4D and the SPEXER are part of the German Armed Forces’ NNbS air defence system for close and short-range protection, which was commissioned in January. HENSOLDT also supplies radars for the German Navy’s new frigates and corvettes, for airspace surveillance and for approach control at military airfields.

01 Jul 24. Record order for Rheinmetall: Bundeswehr orders up to 6,500 military trucks – value up to €3.5bn. Rheinmetall has been given the largest order in the company`s history concerning logistic vehicles by the Bundeswehr. The framework-contract was now signed in Koblenz and incorporates the delivery of up to 6,500 military trucks, valued up to €3.5bn incl. VAT. After the budget committee of the Federal German Parliament had approved funding on 26 June 2024, the contract with Rheinmetall MAN Military Vehicles (RMMV) was signed on 1 July 2024 by the President of the BAAINBw, Annette Lehnigk-Emden and the Management of RMMV. A first call-off for over 610 vehicles, valued at €312m incl. VAT is imminent, of which 250 trucks are to be delivered in 2024. The financing of this call is mainly based on the special funds of the Bundeswehr. Rheinmetall AG will book the order in the third quarter of 2024 of the current fiscal year.

28 Jun 24. Saab has received an order from the Swedish Defence Materiel Administration (FMV) for ten combat boats. The order value is approximately SEK 400m. The contract period begins in 2024 and deliveries will be made continuously over the coming years. 04 Jul 24. Germany’s armed forces, the Bundeswehr, has awarded Airbus the SATCOMBw 3 prime contract for the next generation secure military satellite system which includes geostationary satellites as well as ground segment, launch and operation for 15 years. The spacecraft are due to be deployed before the end of the decade and the contract value amounts to €2.1bn. The contract covers the design, integration, test and in orbit delivery of two new Airbus built military GEO telecommunications satellites which are the successor communications satellites to COMSATBw 1B and 2B. It also includes upgrading of the existing ground segment to operate the new satellites as well as operational services for 15 years, with the possibility of extension.
28 Jun 24. Portugal selects Super Tucano light attack aircraft. The Portuguese Minister of National Defence, João Nuno Lacerda Teixeira de Melo, has revealed his country’s intention to acquire the Embraer Defense & Security A-29 Super Tucano light attack turboprop aircraft. Nuno Melo made the announcement at the National Defence Commission of the Portuguese Parliament on 25 June. He did not disclose a delivery schedule or aircraft numbers. The Portuguese Air Force is eying an aircraft with the capability to carry out close air support (CAS) and intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance (ISR) missions in theatres of operations with limited infrastructure, as well as advanced pilot training. The acquisition of the aircraft fleet as part of modernisation plan ‘Air Force 5.3′ will be funded by approximately EUR206m (USD220m), which is included in an EUR851.5 m budget allocated to the Ministry of National Defence and the Portuguese Armed Forces Staff as part of the country’s Military Programming Law 2023–2034. Portugal is seeking between eight and 12 aircraft, the Director of the Engineering and Programs Directorate at the Portuguese Air Force, Brigadier General João Rui Ramos Nogueira, told Janes in November 2023. Germany has placed another order for Brimstone missiles manufactured by Europe’s primary missile contractor MBDA, thus closing an enduring framework agreement encompassing several thousand systems. The closing contract is worth €376m ($402.3m) – funds that will be allocated from the German Bundeswehr’s special fund and defence budget. 28 Jun 24. The U.S. Army awarded Lockheed Martin a multi-year contract worth $4.5bn for its air defense Patriot Missiles system, the Pentagon said on Friday. The Patriot system is one of an array of sophisticated air defense units supplied by the West to help Ukraine, as it continues its defense against Russia’s invasion. The contract covers 870 PAC-3 MSE missiles and associated hardware. Lockheed is manufacturing the newest version of the interceptors that arm the Patriot, known as PAC-3 MSE, which cost about $4m each, according to Army budget documents. (Source: Reuters)

Shield AI, the defense technology company building the world’s best AI pilot, announced today that the U.S. Coast Guard has awarded the company a $198,106,876 indefinite-delivery, indefinite-quantity firm fixed-price contract to provide Contractor Owned Contractor Operated (COCO) Intelligence, Surveillance, and Reconnaissance (ISR) services. This service will be implemented using the V-BAT unmanned aircraft system (UAS). The V-BAT series aircraft is the only operationally deployed single-engine ducted fan vertical takeoff and land (VTOL) UAS that can launch and recover from a hover and fly on wing in horizontal flight. 01 Jul 24. India’s Bharat Electronics (BEL) has been awarded a contract to supply systems supporting the upgrade of the Indian Army’s BMP-2 infantry fighting vehicle (IFV). The state-owned company said in a filing to the Bombay Stock Exchange on 28 June that under the INR31.72bn (USD380.5m) deal it will integrate onto the BMP-2 a locally developed sighting and fire-control system (FCS). The contract also includes an engineering support package. BEL signed the contract with Armoured Vehicles Nigam Limited (AVNL), another state-owned firm. AVNL is upgrading the Indian Army’s BMP-2s to BMP-2M standard under a contract announced by the Indian Ministry of Defence (MoD) in March. The upgrade covers 693 vehicles. BEL has not disclosed other details about its contract with AVNL, including the expected completion date. According to the MoD, the BMP-2M designation includes the integration of night-fighting systems, a gunner main sight, a panoramic commander sight, and an FCS with an automatic target tracker. The MoD said the systems were acquired through a procurement category known as Indian-Indigenously Designed Developed and Manufactured, which specifies a requirement for at least 50% indigenous content. Sustainment of the Royal Australian Navy’s fleet of Air Warfare Destroyers (DDGs) will today shift to a truly integrated model as BAE Systems Australia commences its role as the first (in service) Capability Life Cycle Manager (CLCM) for the Commonwealth Government. The six-year, $155 m CLCM contract establishes a new Destroyer Enterprise responsible for delivering a best practice approach for the sustainment of the three DDGs – HMAS Hobart, HMAS Sydney and HMAS Brisbane – through a partnership between Defence, Navy and industry. The CLCM is part of the Commonwealth’s new Maritime Sustainment Model, which will eventually apply a standardised method of delivery across the Royal Australian Navy’s fleet and across all types of sustainment activity on a ship, including engineering, maintenance, supply chain and project management. BAE Systems is co-located with the Navy at Garden Island, Sydney, and has a team of more than 200 employees dedicated to the sustainment of the DDGs. BAE Systems was awarded the CLCM contract in late 2022 and was previously Managing Contractor for the DDG Enterprise. The company has been working closely with the Commonwealth and industry partners to develop the Destroyer Enterprise framework, establish protocols and mobilise a modern approach to fleet sustainment. Lockheed Martin Aeronautics, Fort Worth, Texas, has been awarded a not-to-exceed $520,400,000 fixed-price incentive (firm-target) modification (P00008) to previously awarded contract FA8615-23-C-6050 for Foreign Military Sales Block 70/72 F-16 Viper Shield electronic warfare suite production. The contract modification expands the current long lead materials contract to allow the contractor to begin production tasks. The modification brings the total cumulative face value of the contract to $897,400,000. Work will be performed at Fort Worth, Texas, and is expected to be completed by June 30, 2028. This modification involves foreign military sales to the Kingdom of Bahrain, the Republic of Bulgaria, the Kingdom of Morocco, the Slovak Republic, and the Taiwan Air Force. Foreign Military Sales funds in the amount of $177,700,000 are being obligated at the time of award.
