26 Jun 24. IDV has been awarded 4 research and development projects within the European Defence Fund (EDF) financed by EU for a total amount of more than €95m by 2027. For the first time in its history, IDV played a leading role in one of the submitted research and development projects, coordinating the entire project called ARCHYTAS: a consortium of 22 public and private partners from 11 EEA countries that will receive €19.9m to investigate non-conventional Artificial Intelligence (AI) accelerators for defence applications, using novel technologies at the device and package level. The EDF (European Defence Fund) is a key instrument of the European Commission for promoting cooperation in the defence sector through competitive and collaborative projects. The approved projects will allow IDV to keep investing in a European partnership framework, together with outstanding companies and research institutes, accelerating the development of technologies aimed at improving operational efficiency and protecting soldiers by reducing their presence in critical contexts such as reconnaissance, force support, last-mile refuelling, medical support, and CBRN response.
24 Jun 24. The Spanish Air and Space Force has awarded Target Tecnologia, S.A. a second contract for D-Fend Solutions’ EnforceAir2 counter-drone system. Spanish security specialist Target Tecnologia will act as contractor, supplying the new and improved version of EnforceAir, which features improved abilities to detect drones in challenging environments, to disconnect them from their remote operators and to land them safely without collateral damage, whether in active or passive mode. The principal difference in EnforceAir 2, however, is its portability: the system can now be carried in a backpack. The Spanish Air and Space Force awarded Target the first contract for the system in December 2023. EnforceAir 2 will help Spain counter potentially hostile drones, especially during major events, shows, aerial or state activities, as well as when contending with protection of authorities and the general population. Romania’s Ministry of Internal Affairs, Department of Emergency Situations, has awarded PZL Mielec, a Lockheed Martin company, a contract to procure an additional new-generation Black Hawk® utility helicopter for emergency and firefighting services. This additional aircraft will join Romania’s fleet of European manufactured Sikorsky S-70M Black Hawk utility helicopters, currently providing maritime and land search and rescue, firefighting, transport and medical emergency support. In 2023, Romania received seven S-70M helicopters as part of a framework agreement for up to twelve Polish-built S-70M Black Hawks. With this additional aircraft, the fleet of S-70M helicopters will grow to eight. Romania made this purchase funded by European Union RescEU funds, part of the European Civil protection and Humanitarian Aid Operations created to fund, among other items, a fleet of firefighting planes and helicopters. 27 Jun 24. Saab has today signed a contract with the Swedish Defence Materiel Administration (FMV) regarding delivery of a third GlobalEye airborne early warning and control aircraft to Sweden. The order value is approximately SEK 2.6bn and the delivery period is 2024-2029. The order is based on an option included in Saab’s contract with FMV from June 2022 which included two GlobalEye as well as options to procure two additional aircraft. GlobalEye has the Swedish designation S 106.
27 Jun 24. Viasat Inc. (NASDAQ: VSAT), a global leader in satellite communications, today announced that it is expanding its work with Airbus Defence and Space to provide its secure, flexible broadband Ku- and Ka-band airborne technology for the Airbus C295 Maritime Patrol Aircraft (MPA) that have been acquired by the Spanish Ministry of Defence (MoD). Viasat and Airbus Defence and Space will collaborate on the integration of Viasat’s dual-band (Ku/Ka) broadband terminal, the GAT-5530, into the Spanish C295 MPA fleet to provide a highly flexible, multi-band and multi-orbit, broadband SATCOM capability to support missions utilizing the sovereign, next-generation SpainSat NG satellites. The integrated Viasat GAT-5530 terminal will deliver secure, reliable satellite connectivity to the Airbus C295 MPA aircraft, enhancing the Spanish military’s capabilities with resilient broadband SATCOM to support sovereign national security mission needs – including expanded command and control (C2) and intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance (ISR) applications.

25 Jun 24. Terma has won the public procurement tender to deliver products of Terma Ground Segment Suite (TGSS) to the Polish Military University of Technology (WAT). TERMA Ground Segment Suite (TGSS) is a comprehensive set of tools required to deploy a full Mission Control Center, covering everything from satellite testing and checkout to operational management. Leveraging more than 30 years of experience in satellite operations and testing, TGSS incorporates numerous lessons learned over the decades. It is a trusted solution used by major aerospace companies such as Airbus, OHB, and Thales Alenia Space, as well as in space defense programs for the German and Luxembourg armed forces. TGSS package, which includes a Monitoring and Control System (CCS5), a Flight Dynamics System (ORBIT), and a Mission Planning System (PLAN), along with intuitive 2D/3D graphical user interfaces (TRACK), will be utilized for the PIAST (Polish Imaging Satellites) project. PIAST aims to launch the first three fully built Polish satellites into space. General Atomics Electromagnetic Systems (GA-EMS) announced today that the U.S. Space Force’s (USSF), Space Systems Command (SSC) has awarded the company Phase 1 of the Enterprise Space Terminal (EST) program. The EST program will increase the mission effectiveness of future Department of Defense (DoD) platforms by providing a mesh laser communication network for resilient, high-capacity communications paths for spacecraft in beyond Low Earth Orbit (bLEO) regimes at crosslink ranges up to 80,000 km. Over the seven-month contract period of performance, GA-EMS will engineer and develop an Optical Communication Terminal (OCT) design leading to a Phase 1 preliminary design review. As prime contractor, GA-EMS will utilize its extensive OCT design expertise and on-orbit optical communication mission experience to deliver an OCT design to meet the EST Phase 1 program requirements. Phase 1 EST program tasks include designing the payload support system, electrical hardware, laser terminal design, optical design and subsystem, thermal control, command and data handling, and cybersecurity. Kopin Corporation (NASDAQ: KOPN), a leading provider of application-specific optical solutions and high-performance micro-displays for defense, enterprise, consumer and medical products, today announced it has received a contract to develop a high-resolution eyepiece assembly for use in the new Commanders Launch Assembly (CLA), used in the US Army’s Next Generation-Short Range Interceptor (NG-SRI) system. The U.S. Army has long-planned to pursue a next-generation interceptor for short-range air defense; and the effort has become even more urgent with US stockpiles of Stinger missiles now being sent to support in Ukraine. The Army is pursuing a Stinger missile replacement for short-range air defense that can achieve faster speeds, overcome enemy radio-frequency jamming and hit more challenging targets, like drones, with greater precision and accuracy, according to the service’s Program Executive Officer for Missiles and Space. More than 100,000 Stinger missiles were produced during the production run of the original version. Oshkosh Defense, LLC, an Oshkosh Corporation (NYSE: OSK) business, announced today that the U.S. Army Contracting Command – Detroit Arsenal (ACC-DTA) placed a $27.3m order for 57 Medium Equipment Trailers (MET). Oshkosh will execute the order with partner Broshuis B.V. The MET six-axle drop deck trailer is part of the Oshkosh family of trailers and is interoperable with the Oshkosh Enhanced Heavy Equipment Transporter System (EHETS) M1300 tractor. Combined with the EHETS M1300 tractor, the MET can transport combat vehicles weighing up to 60 tons and meet European Highway Road Network Accessibility (RNA) requirements for payloads up to 45 tons. The 70-foot-long trailer is capable of navigating under four-meter overpasses and the hydraulically adjustable suspension allows it to be lowered or raised for obstacle clearance and fording water crossings. CACI International Inc (NYSE: CACI) announced today that it won an eight-year contract valued at up to $2bn to provide digital solutions technology to standardize and centralize 11 of NASA’s IT services under the NASA Consolidated Applications and Platform Services (NCAPS) award. NCAPS expands CACI’s current relationship with NASA and will bring enterprise-wide automation across more than 200 systems from various NASA locations into a single program, thus enhancing efficiency while boosting productivity. Kongsberg Defence & Aerospace (KONGSBERG) has signed a contract through the International Fund for Ukraine for the delivery of Counter Uncrewed Aerial Systems (C-UAS), which will be donated to Ukraine. The delivery consists of several CORTEX Typhon systems, developed to counter a wide specter of UAVs with solutions to either physically harm or otherwise disable the aerial threat. The contract value is GBP 56m. The CORTEX Typhon C-UAS is based on field-proven software and hardware from Teledyne Flir and KONGSBERG, including surveillance system and KONGSBERG Remote Weapon Station (RWS) and CORTEX Integrated Combat Solution (ICS). As part of the delivery, the Norwegian Government has donated Dingo 2 vehicles, KONGSBERG RWS and weapons. The International Fund for Ukraine (IFU) was established by the UK and international partners to identify and procure critical capabilities and deliver them quickly to Ukraine. 24 Jun 24. Austal Limited (ASX:ASB) is pleased to announce that the Australian Government has ordered two additional Guardian-class Patrol Boats from Austal Australia, valued at approximately A$39m. The 39.5-metre, steel-hull patrol boats, to be constructed at Henderson in Western Australia and scheduled for delivery in 2026, are in addition to the 22 Guardian-class Patrol Boats previously ordered by the Australian Government under the Pacific Patrol Boat Replacement Project (SEA3036-1) since 2016. Irving Shipbuilding Inc. has awarded L3Harris two contracts to supply and install the Integrated Platform Management System and Control & Instrumentation system for the Canadian Surface Combatant (CSC), to be built for the Royal Canadian Navy. Under these new contracts, L3Harris will design and deliver the Integrated Platform Management System (IPMS), a sophisticated system for managing the ship’s propulsion, power generation and auxiliary. The IPMS is a powerful system that will enhance the performance, reliability and safety of the new combat ships and significantly enhance Canada’s defence industry performance. The work under these contracts will take place at L3Harris’ Montreal facility and will provide skilled jobs to the region, such as systems engineers, project managers, technicians, quality assurance specialists, procurement and customer support specialists. Hanwha Aerospace, South Korea’s leading aerospace and defense corporation, announced today that it signed a contract with the Defense Acquisition Program Administration (DAPA) to supply the first mass production engines for the KF-21. The contract is valued around USD 401m (556bn KRW). The contract period runs from June 2024 to December 2027, during which Hanwha Aerospace will deliver over 40 F414 engines and spare modules for the KF-21, as well as provide engine maintenance manuals and on-site technical support. The supplied engines will be installed in the first batch of KF-21, as Hanwha Aerospace is obliged to supplying engines until the end of the KF-21 production run as the country’s sole aircraft engine manufacturer. Drawing on its expertise in producing over 10,000 engines over the past 45 years, Hanwha Aerospace is committed to ensuring the delivery of KF-21 engines on time. The company is also focused on developing technical capabilities and building an industrial ecosystem to enable the installation of advanced aviation engines developed with Korea’s own technology. Since 1979, Hanwha Aerospace has supplied engines for Korean military aircraft, including the F-4, KF-5, KF-16, F-15K, and T-50, through overseas license production. The F414 engine for the KF-21 will be produced at the company’s Changwon Plant 1, utilizing a license from GE Aerospace.

Lockheed Martin Aeronautics, Fort Worth, Texas, has been awarded a not-to-exceed $520,400,000, fixed-price incentive, (firm-target) modification (P00008) to previously awarded contract FA8615-23-C-6050 for Foreign Military Sales (FMS) Block 70/72 F-16 Viper Shield electronic warfare suite production. The contract modification expands the current long lead materials contract to allow the contractor to begin production tasks. The location of performance is Fort Worth, Texas. The work is expected to be completed by June 30, 2028. This modification involves FMS to the Kingdom of Bahrain, the Republic of Bulgaria, the Kingdom of Morocco, the Slovak Republic, and the Taiwan Air Force. 26 Jun 24. The Australian federal government has provided $1.35m towards the development of an all-day solar powered fixed-wing drone. The grant is aimed at enabling a Pegasus joint development project between V-TOL Aerospace, Li-S Energy, and Halocell to develop a drone that integrates Li-S’ next-generation batteries and Halocell’s advanced solar cells into a “dawn to dusk” platform. V-TOL believes the project will directly contribute to the advancement of long-range and long-duration beyond visual line of sight (BVLOS) capabilities, especially for ISR and survey markets. V-TOL Aerospace managing director Mark Xavier said the grant was a major success of foresight from the Commonwealth that will open the doors to a wide range of possibilities in drone technologies.
