29 May 24. Kongsberg Defence & Aerospace (‘KONGSBERG’) has signed a contract with the government of Spain for the delivery of the latest generation of the NASAMS air defence system as part of the Spanish Armed Forces air defence modernization programme. The contract value is approximately EUR 410m. The signing of the contract follows the notification of award filed by the Spanish Armaments Directorate, Dirección General de Armamento y Material (DGAM), on 19 April and communicated by KONGSBERG. 27 May 24. Framework contract for Rheinmetall: Bundeswehr orders around one m DM45 smoke grenades – worth up to €67m.  Rheinmetall has been commissioned by the Bundeswehr to supply around one m DM45 smoke hand grenades. On 22 May, Annette Lehnigk-Emden, President of the Federal Office of Bundeswehr Information Technology and In-Service Support (BAAINBw), and Rheinmetall Waffe Munition GmbH signed a framework agreement for the manufacture and supply of the grenades. A total of up to 1.5m DM 45 smoke hand grenades can be procured under the agreement over the coming years. The potential order volume for the approximately one million smoke hand grenades is around EUR 67m and will be financed from the Bundeswehr’s special fund. The framework agreement runs until 2027 and allows flexible annual call-off of the ammunition based on the identified requirements of the troops. The DM45 will be produced at Rheinmetall’s Silberhütte site in the Harz Mountains, Saxony Anhalt. The order that has now been placed means that the production facility will be utilised over the longer term. The smoke hand grenade bears the official designation ‘Granate, Hand, DM45, 800 g, KM (grenade, hand, DM45, 800 g, KM)’. It has been in service with the Bundeswehr since the mid-1990s. When its pyrotechnic charge burns, the smoke hand grenade produces heavy smoke and thus forms a smoke screen. This interrupts the line of sight, making it possible to deceive enemy forces or disguise one’s own movements. The DM45 smoke grenade fully fulfils the requirements of the troops during training, exercises and operations.

 

27 May 24. Major order for gun barrels: Rheinmetall supplies L52 gun barrel systems for the PzH 2000 self-propelled howitzer in the low three-digit million euro range to European customer country On behalf a European customer country, Rheinmetall has been commissioned to supply a three-digit number of L52 gun barrel systems for the Panzerhaubitze 2000 (PzH 2000) self-propelled howitzer. The gun barrels will be delivered in the period 2024-2029. The delivery is part of a massive growth programme in barrel and weapons production that Rheinmetall is currently implementing in order to meet the increased demand in the future. This new order once again underlines Rheinmetall’s leading technological position in the field of gun barrels in Europe. Rheinmetall is a world leader in gun barrels and the associated ammunition technology – including, for example, the 120mm smoothbore gun for main battle tanks. Many user nations around the world place their trust in Rheinmetall’s weapons technology. The PzH 2000, a weapon system developed in the 1980s and 90s and continuously modernized since then, is known for its outstanding long-range firepower. It achieves a rate of fire of ten rounds per minute and, depending on the ammunition and propellant used, a range of between 30 and 40 kilometres with conventional ammunition and 67 kilometres with range-enhanced ammunition.

Exail, a global leader in naval navigation, has secured a contract with Navantia to supply its Gecdis-W Warship Electronic Chart Display and Information System (WECDIS) for the four Spanish S80 Plus-class submarines. Developed by Navantia for the Spanish Navy, the S-80 Plus-class submarines are designed with operational mobility to navigate discreetly and swiftly at high speeds, enabling them to complete missions involving potential threats. The integration of Exail Gecdis-W system will further enhance the submarines’ capabilities, providing precise positioning, real-time situational awareness, and efficient route planning through live data integration and accurate navigational charts. 27 May 24. MBDA has secured a contract to deliver Exocet anti-ship missiles for the French Navy’s frigates. The deal stipulates the 40 Block 3C (MM40 B3C) surface-to-surface variants of the weapon that will be fitted on multi-mission, air defense, and defense and intervention frigates. Poland has signed a $735m contract with the U.S. for the supply of JASSM-ER missiles, Defence Minister Wladyslaw Kosiniak-Kamysz said on Tuesday, as the country spends heavily to bolster its armed forces since Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. Warsaw is spending around 4% of its gross domestic product on defence this year and last week announced an agreement with the U.S. for the delivery of a $960m airspace reconnaissance system to monitor the north-eastern borders. 24 May 24. Oshkosh Defense LLC, Oshkosh, Wisconsin, was awarded a $108,935,583 firm-fixed-price contract for the Family of Medium Trucks. Bids were solicited via the internet with three received. Work locations and funding will be determined with each order, with an estimated completion date of Sept. 30, 2026. Army Contracting Command, Detroit Arsenal, Michigan, is the contracting activity (W912CH-24-F-0082).

 

28 May 24. Roboteam, a leading developer and manufacturer of tactical unmanned platforms for defense and security missions, announced today that it received an initial purchase order to deliver to the United States Marine Corps more than 130 of its Micro Tactical Ground Robot (MTGR) systems, which will be part of a larger order of additional robots to follow, totaling approximately $30m.  The purchase order was received through collaboration with Roboteam’s U.S. partner, Mistral Inc. Roboteam will supply a total of approximately 200 units of its MTGR to the U.S. Marine Corps, along with spare parts and maintenance services. Manufacturing is being conducted locally in the U.S with final assembly at Mistral’s White Marsh production facility. Roboteam has already provided the first batch of MTGR systems to the US Marine Corps and aims to complete the delivery by the first quarter of 2025.

Austal USA, Mobile, Alabama, is awarded a $516,481,569 fixed-price incentive (firm-target) contract modification to a previously awarded contract (N00024-23-C-2203) to exercise an option for ordering long lead time material, continue/complete detail design and Construction of the Lead Ship of the T-AGOS 25 Class. 28 May 24. Leonardo DRS, Inc. (NASDAQ: DRS) announced today that it was awarded a contract from NAVSEA to provide AN/SPQ-9B radar design agent and engineering services. The contract includes options, if exercised, would bring the cumulative value to more than $26m. Under the contract, DRS will provide system engineering, software development, hardware design, installation, safety, test, product updates, system upgrade and configuration management support.  The AN/SPQ-9B is an X-band, pulse Doppler, frequency-agile radar which was designed specifically for the littoral environment. It has a very high clutter improvement factor supporting a very low false track rate in the littorals and in high clutter environments. It scans out to the horizon and performs simultaneous and automatic air and surface target detection and tracking of low flying anti-ship cruise missiles surface threats, and low/slow flying aircraft, UAVs, periscopes, and helicopters. This award builds upon our existing RF and EW systems capabilities and is an expansion of the support that DRS has provided for AN/SPQ-9B over the past six years. This work is an example of DRS’s deep experience as a leader in complex design and manufacturing supporting a wide range of missions. The company’s capabilities extend across all domains to support naval, ground, air, space, and cyber missions in areas of sensing, force protection, computer networking, as well as naval power and propulsion systems.

28 May 24. Bell Textron Inc., a Textron Inc. (NYSE: TXT) company, has been down-selected for Phase 1B of Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) Speed and Runway Independent Technologies (SPRINT) X-Plane program. The SPRINT program intends to design, build, and fly an X-Plane, an experimental aircraft to demonstrate enabling technologies and integrated concepts necessary for a transformational combination of aircraft speed and runway independence for the next generation of air mobility platforms. In Phase 1A, Bell executed conceptual design review and will move into preliminary design efforts for the SPRINT X-plane. Bell completed risk reduction testing at Holloman Air Force Base in late 2023, showcasing folding rotor, integrated propulsion, and flight control technologies. Bell is building on its investment in High-Speed Vertical Takeoff and Landing (HSVTOL) technology and past X-plane experience to inform the X-plane development for this program. Bell’s HSVTOL technology blends the hover capability of a helicopter with the speed (400+ kts), range, and survivability of jet aircraft. Bell has developed high-speed vertical lift technology for more than 85 years, pioneering innovative VTOL configurations like the X-14, X-22, XV-3 and XV-15 for NASA, the U.S. Army and U.S. Air Force, and continues to build on its proven history of fast flight from the Bell X-1.

 

28 May 24. The USAF awarded Boeing a contract worth nearly $7.5bn to build more kits to convert bombs into guided weapons known as Joint Direct Attack Munitions. The company will provide JDAM tail kits and other supplies under the sole-source fixed-price, indefinite delivery/indefinite quantity contract, the Pentagon said Friday. The company will work on the kits, as well as spares, repairs, technical assistance and laser JDAM sensor kits, at its St Louis, Missouri, facility through the end of February 2030. Raytheon Technologies Corp., doing business at Pratt and Whitney Military Engines, East Hartford, Connecticut, is awarded a $301,762,768 modification (P00002) to a previously awarded fixed-price-incentive (firm-target), cost-plus-incentive-fee advanced acquisition contract (N0001923C0030). This modification procures Lot 19 long-lead time materials as well as the manufacture, assembly, inspection, acceptance, and delivery of 108 conventional takeoff and landing F135 propulsion systems, 27 short takeoff and vertical landing F135 propulsion systems, and 13 Carrier Variant F135 propulsion systems. Raytheon Technologies Corp., Pratt and Whitney Military Engines, East Hartford, Connecticut, is awarded a not-to-exceed $380,604,448 modification (P00053) to a previously awarded, cost-plus-incentive-fee, fixed-price incentive (firm-target), cost-plus-fixed-fee, cost reimbursable contract (N0001921C0011). 29 May 24. Leidos Inc., Reston, Virginia, was awarded a $738,446,386 indefinite-delivery/indefinite-quantity contract for Air Force National Capital Region (NCR) information technology services. This contract provides for a full range of classified and unclassified information technology and telecommunication services in the National Capital Region. This contract also provides services to the National Military Command Center’s strategic watch, crisis response, and worldwide monitoring missions. Work will be performed at Joint Base Andrews, Maryland, and the Pentagon in Arlington, Virginia, and is expected to be completed by Sept. 2, 2029. This contract was a competitive acquisition, and one offer was received. The Air Force District of Washington NCR Enterprise Support Division, Joint Base Andrews, Maryland, is the contracting activity (FA2860-24-D-0007).

 

29 May 24. Palantir USG Inc., Palo Alto, California, was awarded a $480,000,000 firm-fixed-price contract for the Maven Smart System prototype. One bid was solicited via the internet with one received. Work locations and funding will be determined with each order, with an estimated completion date of May 28, 2029. 09 May 24. Vigilant Aerospace Systems, the leading developer of multi-sensor airspace management and collision avoidance software for drones and advanced air mobility, has been awarded a $500,000 grant as part of a nearly $1 m project to work with the Oklahoma Aerospace Institute for Research and Education (OAIRE) at Oklahoma State University to develop a distributed version of its detect-and-avoid system. The grant is provided by the Oklahoma Center for the Advancement of Science and Technology (OCAST). Vigilant Aerospace also won an OCAST grant in 2019 to work with OSU integrating new radars into its collision avoidance system. The project addresses the challenges posed by the increasing number of uncrewed aircraft operating in the National Airspace System, including inspection and delivery drones, first responder drones, and larger air taxi and cargo drones. While these autonomous vehicles offer significant societal and economic benefits, they require new airspace management paradigms to ensure safe integration into the existing airspace and air traffic. Vigilant Aerospace provides the software and networked sensors and radars to allow uncrewed aircraft to safely fly long distances and beyond the visual line-of-sight (BVLOS) of the pilot – which is essential to enabling the next generation of aviation.

29 May 24. Marshall and Power Team awarded contract for Canada’s flagship vehicle logistics project. Canada’s Department of National Defence today announced that it has formally awarded the Logistics Vehicle Modernization (LVM) contract to the Power Team, a consortium led by General Dynamics Land Systems-Canada (GDLS-Canada) and Marshall Canada. The announcement was made in Ottawa by the Honourable Bill Blair, Minister of National Defence, at an industry and media gathering on the opening day of CANSEC, the nation’s largest security and defence show. The Power Team, made up of GDLS-Canada, Marshall Canada, Mercedes Benz, Soframe and Manac, will provide the replacement for the Canadian Armed Forces’ (CAF) existing fleet of logistics vehicles—an essential capability for transferring resources, personnel and military assets during domestic and international operations and training exercises. The LVM project is being awarded in two contracts: one for vehicle acquisition to provide over 1,000 light trucks and approximately 500 heavy trucks valued at CAD$1.5bn (including taxes), and one for in-service support for a total potential value of CAD$1.08 bn (including taxes) over 25 years. With GDLS-Canada serving as prime integrator, Marshall will produce a range of interchangeable light and heavy 10ft and 20ft mission modules capable of being mounted onto Mercedes-Benz Zetros trucks, which will provide the common vehicle chassis across all configurations.

 

24 May 24. Visionary Machines to develop C-UAS technology for Australian defence department. Defence Connect reports that Visionary Machines has been awarded an innovation contract to develop its Pandion counter drone and robotic autonomous systems passive 3D multispectral perception sensor technology. The contract follows the company’s winning submission to Army Innovation Day 2023, an Australian Department of Defence initiative that sees the Advanced Strategic Capabilities Accelerator (ASCA) partner with the Australian Army to challenge industry in solving complex problems for the Land Force. Visionary Machines tendered for and was successful in securing a Phase 2 technology demonstration contract applicable across all three Counter Robotic and Autonomous Systems (C-RAS) capability themes, including Counter Aerial, Counter Ground and Counter Littoral and Riverine RAS. Visionary Machines’ Pandion C-RAS Passive 3D Multispectral Perception System is an optical system for drone detection with multiple vehicle and stationary array applications. It is designed to track targets including uncrewed aerial systems, uncrewed ground systems, and uncrewed waterborne systems at significant distances from ground level or near ground level. 30 May 24. Rolls-Royce has secured a multimillion-pound contract to supply engines for a new class of Japanese warship. The British engineering giant confirmed on Thursday it will provide a propulsion machine for Tokyo’s planned Aegis system equipped vessels (ASEVs). Each of the Japanese ships will have a propulsion system powered by two of Rolls’s MT30 engines. The pair of destroyers will help to defend Japan from ballistic missiles carrying either conventional or nuclear warheads, amid concerns about China’s military buildup and rocket launches by North Korea. Rolls makes cores for the MT30 engines in Derby and assembles the final products at its defence campus in Bristol. (Source: Daily Telegraph)

The US State Department has made a determination approving a possible Foreign Military Sale (FMS) to Brazil of UH-60M Black Hawk helicopters for an estimated cost up to $950m, according to the US Defense Security Cooperation Agency (DSCA). In a 24 May 2024, DSCA announcement, deal saw a request from Brazil to buy 12 UH-60M Black Hawk helicopters, 34 T700-GE-701D engines (24 installed, ten spares), 28 EAGLE-M Embedded Global Position Systems with Inertial Navigation (EGI) or functional equivalent (24 installed, four spares), and 24 AN/ARC-231A radio systems. Additional equipment included M-134D-H minigun systems, Fast Rope Insertion Extraction System (FRIES), EBC-406HM Emergency Locator Transmitters (ELT), Aircrew Combat Equipment (ACE), Internal Auxiliary Fuel Tank System (IAFTS), and other related elements of logistics and programme support. The DSCA said the proposed sale would “support the foreign policy and national security objectives of the United States by helping to improve the security of an important regional partner that is a force for political stability and economic progress in South America”. Further, the DSCA said that the proposed sale of UH-60 to Brazil would increase the country’s ability to provide troop transport, border security, medical evacuation, humanitarian assistance and disaster relief, search and rescue, and peacekeeping support. 30 May 24. Canada awards SkyAlyne CAD11.2bn Future Aircrew Training contract. The Canadian government has awarded SkyAlyne a CAD11.2bn (USD8.1bn) contract for the Future Aircrew Training (FAcT) project to train Canadian pilots and aircrew, the country’s Minister of National Defence Bill Blair announced at the CANSEC show on 29 May.
