26 Mar 24. SEA Awarded £135m Royal Navy Countermeasures Contract. Cohort subsidiary Systems Engineering and Assessment Ltd (SEA) has been awarded a contract by the UK’s Ministry of Defence to provide Electronic Warfare Countermeasures Increment 1a (EWCM 1a) to the Royal Navy. The scope of work will include the provision and support of SEA’s Trainable Decoy Launcher System, known as Ancilia, which also incorporates technology and hardware from Cohort’s business Chess Dynamics Ltd. The total value of the contract to SEA is to be at least £135m. Work will commence immediately and is expected to continue for more than ten years. The contract includes a number of options which may increase its value and the period over which it will be delivered, subject to future decisions by the customer. Together with other recent order wins, the contract is expected to materially enhance the Group’s earnings. Ancilia delivers effective and rapid protection against modern anti-ship threats and sophisticated systems and tactics. It will be installed across a range of the Royal Navy’s surface ships. Its design builds on SEA’s deep knowledge of existing systems in service with the Royal Navy.
27 Mar 24. Survitec, the global leader in critical safety and survival solutions, has been awarded a significant contract to supply its Survival Technology to five Type 31 Frigates being built by Babcock for the Royal Navy. Under the terms of the agreement, Survitec will manufacture and supply four 100-person and four 25-person liferafts to each vessel. Survitec’s liferaft solutions undergo stringent testing and validation to ensure compliance with the highest performance and safety standards. The contract also includes the supply of six scramble nets and ladders to each vessel. The contract with Babcock is particularly noteworthy for its longevity, as the build of these five vessels extends into 2028. The Type-31 Frigates are multi-role vessels designed to bolster the UK’s maritime defence capabilities, serving alongside destroyers and aircraft carriers. The first vessel will launch this year, marking a milestone in the UK’s naval modernisation efforts.

25 Mar 24. General Atomics Aeronautical Systems Inc., Poway, California, has been awarded a $53,176,133 cost-plus-fixed-fee contract for MQ-9 logistical and ground control station support. The scope of the contract will include field service representatives, repair and return, as well as technical support tasks for the United Kingdom Royal Air Force. This contract is the result of a sole-source acquisition. Work will be performed outside of the continental U.S. and is expected to be complete March 31, 2025. Foreign Military Sales funds in the amount of $53,176,133 are being obligated at the time of award. 27 Mar 24. Red Cat Holdings, Inc. 27 Mar 24. Elbit Systems’ solution for Artillery Command, Control, Communications, Computers, and Intelligence (C4I) has been selected by a European country. Under the agreement, Elbit Systems will enhance 155mm howitzer battalions with advanced Digital Fires capabilities, by seamlessly integrating its C4ISR Artillery Suite including the Torch-X Fires application and E-LynX Software Defined Radio (SDR) radios. Torch-X Fires is a multi-layer, integrated solution that incorporates industry-standard mature technology, based on Elbit Systems’ state-of-the art C4ISR platform. It enables highly effective cross-force coordination, quick and precise planning and execution with quick and effective sensor-to-shooter capabilities. Complementing Torch-X Fires to a full digital solution, E-LynX™ family of SDR radios is the latest generation of tactical communication solutions, supporting the operational requirements of the modern battlespace, these radios ensure fast, resilient and secure communications for simultaneous voice, date and video capabilities in any terrain.
26 Mar 24. Patria has signed a contract with Kongsberg Defence & Aerospace (‘Kongsberg’) for the delivery of PROTECTOR remote weapon stations to more than 300 Sweden’s and Finland’s Patria 6×6 vehicles within the Common Armoured Vehicle System (CAVS) programme. The contract model is very unique as supplies to multiple customers are contracted under same contract between Patria and Kongsberg. Patria is the prime contractor and integrator of the vehicles and Kongsberg is the selected supplier for the PROTECTOR RS4 remote weapon stations. The deliveries are starting from 2025 and last into the 2030s. Patria 6×6 vehicle was chosen as the platform for the CAVS collaboration programme between several European countries in 2021. CAVS related Patria 6×6 deliveries are ongoing to Latvia, Finland and Sweden, and vehicles are in operational use. Germany joined the programme in April 2023.
26 Mar 24. Rheinmetall receives over €130m in funding from the European Union to increase the production of ammunition. Hence, more than a quarter of the total sum of €500m awarded by the EU under the Act of Support in Ammunition Production (ASAP) in order to expand the production of 155mm artillery ammunition and powder will be channelled into a total of six projects by Rheinmetall AG’s European subsidiaries. The programme will support projects in Germany, Hungary, Romania and Spain. Rheinmetall has been increasing its production capacities since 2022 and the company aims at producing up to 1.1 m artillery shells per year by 2027. In addition, up to 1.5 m propellant modules and 3,000 tonnes of RDX explosives are to be produced annually starting in 2026. Further tenders are expected in the future. In its recently published proposal for a European Defence Investment Programme (EDIP), the EU plans to promote the expansion of production capacities for other defence products.
25 Mar 24. Saab has received an order for the man-portable, multi-role weapon system Carl-Gustaf® from the NATO Support and Procurement Agency (NSPA). The order value is approximately EUR 60m (SEK 700m) and the contract period is 2024-2027. The order is placed on behalf of four NATO member nations within a framework agreement between Saab and the NSPA regarding Carl-Gustaf, including ammunition and equipment. (Source: ASD Network)

25 Mar 24. GKN Aerospace has received an order from the Swedish Defence Materiel Administration (FMV) to develop conceptual studies for advanced power and propulsion systems to support future fighter systems. The agreement runs for two years, from 2024 to 2025, with the potential for a follow-on phase beyond. The contract covers conceptual studies of power and propulsion systems for the next-generation of combat air capabilities, based on exploring both existing and future technology and performing demonstrations. GKN Aerospace will collaborate closely with the Swedish Armed Forces, FMV, FOI, Saab and other national and international industry partners. The studies will help create the foundation for future fighter systems and continue the path of innovative Swedish-developed fighter systems. GKN Aerospace will seek and develop collaboration with partners working with a range of power and propulsion systems and disruptive technologies, which are expected to play an important role for any future air combat capability. Alongside these studies, GKN Aerospace has entered a new cooperation agreement with Saab to strengthen their partnership developing innovative solutions across a range of areas, including next-generation fighter systems. 27 Mar 24. North Macedonia signs helicopter contract with Leonardo. North Macedonia finalised its agreement to acquire eight new battlefield lift helicopters from Leonardo on 26 March, the Ministry of Defence (MoD) announced on the same day. The deal to buy four AW149 and four AW169M helicopters was signed between the North Macedonian Minister of Defence, Slavjanka Petrovska, and the vice-president of Leonardo, Cesare Cacha, in Skopje. The milestone came weeks after the Army of the Republic of North Macedonia (ARNM) selected the Italian-built helicopters in January to replace Soviet-built airframes operated by the Aviation Brigade of the ARNM. Deliveries will take place from August 2026 through to the end of 2028. Petrovska initially said the deal was valued at an estimated EUR230m (USD250.5m), but this has since risen to EUR249.9m. 22 Mar 24. Saab has received an order from the Swedish Defence Materiel Administration (FMV) regarding conceptual studies for future fighters for both crewed and uncrewed systems, with the contract running through to 2025. According to a 22 March release Saab will “collaborate closely” with the FMV, the Swedish Armed Forces, the Swedish Defence Research Agency, GKN Aerospace, and other industry partners. 26 Mar 24. Saab has received an order from Airbus Defence and Space for the Arexis Electronic Warfare (EW) sensor suite. The contract period is 2024-2026. The German defence procurement office announced in June 2023 that it had selected Saab’s Arexis sensor suite for the Eurofighter EK, an EW variant of the German Air Force’s Eurofighter aircraft. This order marks the start of the first phase of Saab’s delivery of Arexis within this programme. Saab received the order from Airbus, which will equip 15 of the German Air Force’s Eurofighters for EW missions with solutions including Saab’s Arexis. These aircraft will replace the German Air Force’s Tornado ECR, which are set to be decommissioned from 2030.

BAE Systems (LON: BA) has been awarded a contract valued up to $318m from the U.S. Army to perform technical and sustainment support services for its fleet of M109A6 and A7 Self-Propelled Howitzers (SPH) and their companion, M992A3 carrier, ammunition, tracked (CAT) vehicles. Under the five-year System Technical Support and Sustainment System Technical Support contract, BAE Systems will deliver ongoing engineering and logistics services to provide new capabilities, maintenance, and testing on the family of vehicles. The services contract follows the M109A7 production contract awarded in November 2023. The M109A7 is the latest howitzer in the M109 family of vehicles, the primary indirect fire support system for the Armored Brigade Combat Teams (ABCT). It uses the existing main armament and cab structure of a Paladin M109A6, and replaces the vehicle’s chassis components with modem components common to the Bradley vehicle. The improved chassis structure provides greater survivability and commonality with the existing systems in the ABCT, reducing operational sustainability costs by replacing obsolete components. 26 Mar 24. Kromek receives $2.1m security screening order. Kromek Group plc (AIM: KMK), a leading developer of radiation and bio-detection technology solutions for the advanced imaging and CBRN detection segments, is pleased to announce that it has received a $2.1m order from an existing US-based OEM customer that is an emerging leader and global company in the homeland security marketplace. The order is for the supply of key detector components for incorporation into the customers’ advanced security screening system for the detection of explosives. Delivery will commence in the current year and complete in the first half of FY 2025. The Group has been supplying this customer since 2017 when it was awarded a five-year delivery contract, following the completion of an R&D phase to design components to meet the customer’s requirements, and it expects to enter another long-term delivery contract.

25 Mar 24. Pratt & Whitney, an RTX (NYSE: RTX) business, has received full funding in the recently passed fiscal year 2024 Defense Appropriations bill for its F135 Engine Core Upgrade, which will modernize the F-35’s propulsion system to increase durability and fully-enable Block 4 capabilities and beyond starting in 2029. $497m was allocated to the F135 ECU, which will move into detailed design later this year. The ECU is compatible with all three variants of the F-35, will be retrofittable, and will be available to all F-35 operators. The ECU will utilize the same F135 global sustainment network and domestic workforce already in place, supporting more than 57,000 jobs and 225 suppliers that contributed more than $2.2bn to the U.S. economy in 2023. The defense bill also includes continued support for the Next-Generation Adaptive Propulsion program, a portion of which will be provided for Pratt & Whitney’s XA103 adaptive engine to continue moving toward detailed design review for the prototype engine. 25 Mar 24. AIM Defence engaged to deliver deployable directed energy for ADF. The Australian Defence Force has contracted Melbourne-based laser developer AIM Defence to produce a deployable directed energy system for use against drones. 25 Mar 24. Elbit Systems Ltd. (NASDAQ: ESLT and TASE: ESLT) (“Elbit Systems” or the “Company”) announced today that it has been awarded a contract worth approximately $300m to supply defense solutions to an international customer. The contract will be performed over a period of ten years.

28 Mar 24. Fincantieri, will construct two Pattugliatori Polivalenti d’Altura (PPA) multi-purpose patrol ships for the Indonesian Ministry of Defence (MoD) despite the fact that these vessels were originally destined for the Italian Navy. Under the management guidance of Europe’s Organisation for Joint Armament Production (OCCAR), the PPA programme was introduced in May 2015, with construction beginning in 2017. Italy’s contract stipulated seven ships and in-service support for ten years in a deal worth €3.5bn ($3.89bn). According to GlobalData intelligence, the Italian Navy currently have two PPA units in active service. The new fleet will replace Italy’s ageing fleet of various patrol boats, corvettes and frigates acquired from as early as the 1980s. Within a framework of collaborative relations initiated by the Italian MoD, Indonesia will benefit from two of these PPAs in a deal worth €1.18bn, according to the supplier on 28 March 2024. However, it remains unclear whether the two ships will come from the seven Italian PPAs. This is unlikely given that Fincantieri launched Italy’s sixth PPA, the Ruggiero di Lauria, from Muggiano shipyard in October 2023. (Source: naval-technology.com)
