04 Mar 24. Rheinmetall supplying NATO member nation with multiple rocket launcher ammunition and other systems worth more than €300m. Rheinmetall has won an order to supply a European member of NATO with multiple rocket launcher ammunition. Delivery is to take place from 2024 to 2027. The order, which was already booked in December 2023, represents sales volume for Rheinmetall of more than €300m, without value added tax. Rheinmetall Expal Munitions of Spain is responsible for manufacturing and delivering the rockets, which have a maximum range of 300 km. The order also encompasses additional services and other systems. This is Rheinmetall’s first sales success in rocket artillery, vindicating the recent strategic expansion of its product portfolio. Just the other day, on 12 February, German Chancellor Olaf Scholz wielded a shovel at the ground-breaking ceremony took place at Unterlüß in Lower Saxony for a new factory that will produce explosives, artillery ammunition and rocket artillery components. In artillery systems, 120mm smoothbore tank ammunition, cannon-based air defence and the production of medium-calibre ammunition, Rheinmetall is a leading global supplier. Ever since its foundation over 125 years ago, the company has been a reliable partner of the artillery branch, supplying seamless barrels for big guns. In the ammunition domain, today Rheinmetall supplies a comprehensive array of ammunition types in various calibres. The latest orders for artillery rockets and 155mm artillery ammunition underscore Rheinmetall’s technological edge in ammunition development and production in Europe. Lockheed Martin Space, Titusville, Florida, is awarded a cost-plus-fixed-fee $109,254,610 contract (N0002024C2017) to support the integration of the Trident II (D5) Missile and reentry subsystems into the Common Missile Compartment for the U.S./U.K. Columbia/Dreadnought submarine construction programs. Work will be performed in Cape Canaveral, Florida (57.4%); Sunnyvale, California (15.9%); Denver, Colorado (4.4%); Poway, California (3.2%); Groton, Connecticut (1.5%); Kings Bay, Georgia (1.3%); Cocoa, Florida (1.2%); Titusville, Florida (1.2%); Courtland, Alabama (1.1%); Valley Forge, Pennsylvania (1.1%); and other various locations (less than 1.0% each, 11.7% total). Work is expected to be complete by Feb. 28, 2029. Fiscal 2024 shipbuilding and conversion (Navy) funds in the amount of $80,923,245; and foreign funds (non-foreign military sales) in the amount of $28,331,365, will be obligated at time of award. No funds will expire at the end of the current fiscal year. This contract is being awarded on a sole source basis under 10 U.S. Code 2304(c)(1) with one proposal received and was previously synopsized on the System for Award Management website. 07 Mar 24. Norway exercises option for additional TPY-4 radars. The Norwegian Defence Materiel Agency (NDMA) is procuring three additional TPY-4 multimission ground-based radars from Lockheed Martin after exercising a contract option with the company. According to an announcement by the NDMA on 3 March, the additional radars will be stationed in Senja, Målselv, and Nordkapp to enhance surveillance in the northern region of the country. In November 2022 Norway contracted Lockheed Martin to deliver eight TPY-4 radars, with an option for further three systems under the ‘P 2078 Air Surveillance Radars’ programme. The programme involves replacing the country’s ageing SINDRE II RAT-31SL radars, with a total of NOK2–4bn (USD189–378m) allocated in 2015 for the procurement. Out of the eight radars originally ordered, five are being installed at new sites, while the remaining three will be stationed at existing locations. The first radar is due to be installed in Gyrihaugen, Norway, by the end of 2025. Deliveries were initially scheduled to conclude by 2030; however, this has been extended because of the contract option being exercised, the NDMA said. (Source: Janes)

 

04 Mar 24. Saab has today signed a contract with the Polish Ministry of Defence’s procurement authority for delivery of the Carl-Gustaf® M4 weapon, ammunition and training equipment. The order value corresponds to SEK 12.9bn and the contract period is 2024-2027. The order is expected to be booked by Saab before the end of Q2 2024.  The contract is expected to be effective by the end of Q2 2024, subject to the fulfilment of certain external conditions.

 

06 Mar 24. France, Germany Ground Alerter radar set for MLU. France and Germany’s Ground Alerter 10 (GA 10) anti-mortar radar will receive a mid-life upgrade (MLU) to bolster its capabilities and address obsolescence. The Organisation for Joint Armament Cooperation (OCCAR) will manage the MLU, with a contract totalling EUR15m (USD16.2m) expected to be awarded in early 2024, the authority detailed in its 2024 business plan published on 5 March. Manufactured by Thales, GA 10 is a two-dimensional omnidirectional ultra-high frequency (UHF) passive multistatic counter-rocket, artillery, mortar (C-RAM) radar system. It comprises a tripod-mounted circular-array antenna and an associated radar electronics processing unit, which when combined, can localise the point of impact and launch point of RAM threats. GA 10 can be used as a standalone system or deployed in a netted configuration. The radar can detect mortars within an 8 km range, extending to 30 km for larger aircraft with a radar cross-section of 5m². The total cumulative face value of the contract is $2,732,764,209. This contract modification provides for the exercise of options for the procurement of 34 full rate production ACV personnel variants and associated production, fielding and support costs, and cyclic maintenance. Work will be performed in York, Pennsylvania (60%); Aiken, South Carolina (15%); San Jose, California (15%); Sterling Heights, Michigan (5%); and Stafford, Virginia (5%), with an expected completion date of July 2026. 01 Mar 24. Logos Technologies LLC, a subsidiary of Elbit Systems of America, announced today that the U.S. Army awarded the company a $19,379,640 cost-plus-fixed-fee contract to supply, maintain and operate Serenity hostile fire detection (HFD) systems in theater. The five-year contract is the newest installment in a long-standing effort by United States Africa Command (AFRICOM) to employ dual-sensor Serenity HFD systems to safeguard U.S. expeditionary forces against radicalized actors. The Serenity system weighs only 50-75 pounds, depending on the configuration, and can be mounted on towers and aerostats (and as well as some aircraft). 06 Mar 24. Palantir Technologies Inc. (NYSE: PLTR) today announced that the Army Contracting Command – Aberdeen Proving Ground (ACC-APG) has awarded Palantir USG, Inc. — a wholly-owned subsidiary of Palantir Technologies Inc. — a prime agreement for the development and delivery of the Tactical Intelligence Targeting Access Node (TITAN) ground station system, the Army’s next-generation deep-sensing capability enabled by artificial intelligence and machine learning (AI/ML). 07 Mar 24. 05 Mar 24. 06 Mar 24. Xwing, a leading defense and aviation autonomy technology startup, today announced that it was advanced as a winner of a Phase I SBIR from the Army xTech SBIR Autonomy program. (NYSE: BKSY) won a multi-m dollar contract in support of the U.S. Department of Defense to collect and annotate thousands of BlackSky multi-frame burst images to train moving target artificial intelligence models for commercial motion imagery. BlackSky multi-frame burst images are collected in rapid succession during a single satellite pass over an area of interest. With multiple view angles captured within a matter of seconds, burst imagery can be used to generate 3D volumetric products and very accurate movement-oriented detection analytics. 08 Mar 24. MicroTau, which has designed specialised polymer riblet films for aircraft to increase fuel efficiency, has been selected by the United States’ Department of Defense (DoD) for flight testing of its product. According to a statement from the Australian company on Friday, it was selected in response to the Defense Innovation Unit’s (DIU) solicitation for drag reduction solutions for legacy aircraft. Their sharkskin-inspired riblet films will be tested on the wings and fuselage of a Lockheed Martin C-130J Super Hercules aircraft operated by the Air Force Special Operations Command (AFSOC), which will be the first flight tests of such a product on US Air Force aircraft. The flight tests are expected to go ahead at an unspecified date this year. The solicitation also identified two other target fleets for future application: the Boeing C-17 Globemaster III and the Boeing KC-135 Stratotanker. If successful, MicroTau estimates a potential rollout worth $US 540 m across the USAF’s C-130, C-17, and KC-135 fleet.  The project is led by the Air Force Operational Energy Office, in partnership with the DIU, the Air Force Research Laboratory (AFRL), and AFSOC, with involvement from Lockheed as a key subcontractor to support flight testing and performance evaluation. Pacific Defense, a leading provider of adaptive Modular Open Systems Approach (MOSA) products and mission solutions, was recently awarded a $17.4m contract by the Office of Naval Research (ONR) to demonstrate advanced algorithms and software that reconfigures distributed battlefield sensors enabling delivery of multi-function effects from devices deployed at the tactical edge. 28 Feb 24. Sigma Defense has been awarded a 5-year, $59 m Autonomy Baseline Manager (ABM) contract for Program Manager Ships, Unmanned Maritime Systems (PMS 406) within PEO USC. This single-award cost plus fixed-fee contract includes a one-year base period plus four option years. Under this contract, Sigma Defense will provide integration services for autonomy software for unmanned vehicles for PEO USC (Unmanned Small Combatants). Leveraging its extensive expertise in DevSecOps, Sigma Defense will deliver tools and processes to manage pipelines and integrate autonomous capabilities among Unmanned Vehicles (UxVs). Specifically, Sigma Defense will employ DevSecOps and Agile methodologies using the Rapid Autonomy Integration Lab (RAIL) process, which includes a software factory for Continuous Integration and Continuous Delivery (CI/CD) of software to UxVs. This contract award underscores Sigma Defense’s commitment to providing innovative solutions and its position as a trusted partner for delivering mission-critical capabilities to the U.S. Navy. 01 Mar 24. Israel Aerospace Industries (IAI) has inked a significant contract with Israel’s Ministry of Defense, involving the sale of advanced armament systems by its Systems Missiles and Space (SMS) Group. This NIS 1.6bn deal, classified due to its sensitive nature, is set to unfold over the next two years, marking a crucial phase in Israel’s military preparedness amidst rising global tensions. The announcement was made following IAI’s participation in the Singapore Airshow, a key event in the aerospace industry, where the company showcased its cutting-edge technologies. IAI’s weaponry and systems, including unmanned aerial vehicles, loitering munitions, and naval weapons, have been deployed across various fronts in the ongoing Swords of Iron War. Notably, “Panda”, a remotely operated D-9 bulldozer, has emerged as a standout in these military operations. Amidst this backdrop, there are growing concerns, as highlighted in recent reports by “CNN”, about possible Israeli maneuvers in Lebanon, suggesting that the new arms deal could be part of a broader strategy for rearmament and readiness for significant military operations. 06 Mar 24. Dearsan wins Qatari contract for two 50 m FACs. Dearsan has been awarded a contract to design and build two 50 m fast attack craft (FAC) for the Qatar Emiri Naval Forces (QENF), the Turkish shipyard announced during the DIMDEX 2024 show held in Doha from 4 to 6 March. The contract was also reported by Qatar News Agency, which said the QENF signed a contract to “implement the fast attack craft project (Halul 11)”. It cited QENF Commander Major General Abdullah Hassan Al-Sulaiti as saying that the Halul 11 project covered the delivery of fast attack craft with an approximate length of 45 m. A Dearsan representative confirmed to Janes that this was a reference to the FAC 50, as the design has evolved over the last five years with the vessel growing enlarged so that it can carry all the systems the QENF requires. It is now largely finalised, although there could still be some small changes. He added that the first FAC 50 will be delivered in about three years, with the second following about two months later.
