17 Jan 24. AMD has received UK Government Defence and Security Accelerator (DASA) funding within the new “Affordable and Adaptable Unmanned Air Systems” competition. Funded by the Army Research Innovation and Exploitation Laboratory (ARIEL), a part of the Army’s Futures Directorate, the competition seeks novel low-cost and adaptable autonomous air systems to give the UK an advantage. The challenge for AMD is to use its existing low-cost radar absorbing technologies to help such autonomous air systems survive against evolving counter-air and counter-uncrewed air system threats.
15 Feb 24. Turner & Townsend have been selected as joint project delivery partner by Defence Equipment and Support (DE&S) – an arms length body of the UK Ministry of Defence (MOD) to its Project Delivery Partner-Successor (PDP-S) framework. As part of the appointment, we will assist in project and operational delivery of world-class equipment and support across the whole MOD defence enterprise working jointly with Jacobs as the lead parties for the Equinox Joint Venture (JV). Together we will provide project and operational delivery across all MOD government departments, spanning the UK’s global defence operations, as well as offering advisory services. To help deliver this work we will draw on the support of a 27-strong supply chain that forms the Equinox JV, ensuring that the MOD can sustain a modern, highly adaptable defence force in the face of a complex range of potential threats. The framework will run for an initial period of five years, commencing in March 2024, with the option for two single year extensions.

09 Feb 24. Safran and Nexter integrate sights on the evolving Leclerc tank. The French Directorate General of Armaments has contracted the two companies to integrate new sights on the newly digitised Leclerc XLR MBT. In an effort to keep the Leclerc main battle tank (MBT) up to date, the French Ministry of Defence has contracted domestic industry organisations to come together to digitise the thirty-year-old platform. France’s Directorate Gerneral of Armaments (DGA) notified Nexter – a government-owned weapons producer and subsidiary of the holding company KNDS – and Safran – a Paris-based aerospace equipment manufacturer – of the contract. Namely, the two companies will work together to develop and integrate an ‘observation’ function to the remodeled Leclerc XLR using Safran’s PASEO sight. (Source: army-technology.com)
15 Feb 24. International cybersecurity and medical imaging IT company Sectra (STO: SECT B) has received orders from EU organizations, including three new EU member states. The orders include units of Sectra’s approved high-assurance mobile encryption system and extensions of current support contracts for the same system. The solution ensures that users are able to securely and efficiently communicate classified information—information that could, if it were to fall into the wrong hands, severely damage the security of those organizations. Sectra’s solution is a quantum-resilient mobile communication solution approved by national security authorities, the EU and NATO. It allows the user to share classified information through encrypted speech, messaging and data transfer. The solution offers high availability as it can utilize a variety of IP networks, such as satellite, fixed and mobile networks, for all types of communication. The contracts for Sectra’s mobile encryption system and extended support were signed in the third quarter of Sectra’s 2023/2024 fiscal year.

12 Feb 24. The German Bundeswehr has extended an existing contract for the technical-logistical support (TLS) of the F125 German Navy frigate class for an additional five years until 1 March 2029. Under this modification, the two German suppliers Thyssenkrupp Marine Systems and the NVL Group – as part of the consortium ARGE F125 – will ensure the operational readiness of all four ships in the class as well as the testing and training centre in Wilhelmshaven in northern Germany. The F125 is a multi-purpose frigate designed and built by Arge F125 for the German Navy. Originally designed, built and delivered to the Germany Navy between 2005 and 2022, the four surface combatants can be deployed worldwide for up to two years before returning to the home base. They are capable of operating for up to 5,000 hours a year, even under tropical conditions. The main mission of the F125 frigate is to take part in joint assignments, including multinational assignments in network-centric operations. 16 Feb 24. Sweden has selected a drone from French company Parrot for its Home Guard military reserve unit. The project stipulated the procurement of Parrot’s Anafi USA small unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV), which is specifically designed to meet US Army requirements. The capability incorporates a thermal camera that can detect hot spots from 40 meters (131 feet) in altitude and a camera that can zoom into targets up to two kilometers (1.2 miles) away. Anafi USA is powered by smart batteries and controlled via the company’s proprietary Skycontroller to deploy across GPS-contested environments. It comes with an optional 8-inch display for real-time flight monitoring. According to the Swedish Defence Materiel Administration (FMV), the drone is now delivered under the national security service. The Anafi USA GOV type, which was selected by Stockholm’s defense ministry, will be called UAV 06 A (Skatan) throughout its operations with the military reserve unit, the agency wrote. 15 Feb 24. The U.S. State Department has approved the potential sale to Italy of air-to-air missiles and small diameter bombs, the Pentagon said on Thursday. Italy has requested to buy 125 small diameter bombs and related equipment for an estimated cost of $150m, the Pentagon said. Italy has also asked to purchase 12 AIM advanced medium-range air-to-air missiles for an estimated cost of $69.3m, the Pentagon said. It said the prime contractor for both sales is RTX Corp (RTX.N), opens new tab. Persistent Systems, LLC (“Persistent”), a leader in Mobile Ad Hoc Networking (MANET) technology, announced that the company was awarded a $3.6m contract to supply Naval Information Warfare Center, Pacific with MPU5 MANET radios, to be integrated with various US Navy sensors. These networked sensors will be used for a variety of target acquisition CONOPS as part of an ongoing R&D effort. For each Navy sensor, the company will supply two MPU5 networking devices: one mounted on a robot or vehicle/vessel (manned or unmanned) and the other given to the remote operator. The resulting MANET will enable seamless, peer-to-peer sharing of voice, video, text, GPS, and sensor data—all without the need for external communications infrastructure or a vulnerable central node. 12 Feb 24. A $75m contract has been awarded to defense firm RTX Corp. to produce 600 Coyote Block 2C interceptors used to attack enemy drones, according to an Army news release Friday. The announcement follows a series of drone attacks launched from sites in Yemen against Red Sea commercial shipping and a fatal attack on a U.S. base in Jordan that killed three Army Reservists on Jan. 28. RTX, the Virginia-based defense contractor formerly known as Raytheon, was awarded the contract on Jan. 16, roughly one month after the Army submitted plans to procure 6,000 Coyote kinetic interceptors within five years, according to the General Services Administration’s System for Award Management website. The next-generation Baseline 4 mission systems will deliver powerful, long-range electromagnetic attack capabilities to disrupt and suppress the enemy’s use of the electromagnetic spectrum for communications, navigation, and air defense. Compass Call is the Department of Defense’s only long-range, full-spectrum stand-off electromagnetic warfare jamming platform. The fleet of 14 EC-130H Compass Call aircraft is being replaced with 10 modernized EA-37B aircraft. 13 Feb 24. Intelsat will produce satellite terminals for the U.S. Air Force that can connect to multiple networks in space, providing more consistent broadband communications for military aircraft. The company’s terminal, called ROAM (resilient multi-orbit airborne module) can seamlessly switch connections between Intelsat’s and Viasat’s fleet of satellites in geosynchronous orbit, and SpaceX’s Starlink satellites in low Earth orbit, said David Broadbent, Intelsat’s president of government solutions. Intelsat, based in McLean, Virginia, will supply five terminals to the Air Force Research Laboratory under a $9 m contract that is part of the Defense Experimentation Using Commercial Space Internet program. Intelsat, operator of one of the world’s largest integrated satellite and terrestrial networks, will develop and test multi-orbit satellite communications (SATCOM) systems on several different Air Force aircraft following the award of a new contract from the U.S. Air Force Research Laboratory. The deal is part of the Defense Experimentation Using Commercial Space Internet (DEUCSI) program to address the government’s need for resilient communications for aircraft, using multi-band, multi-orbit implementations that can seamlessly be switched between orbits at a moment’s notice. The Norwegian government today announced its intention to order a further ten NASAMS launch units and four fire control centers from Kongsberg Defense & Aerospace (KONGSBERG) for donation to Ukraine. The new order is subject to approval by the Norwegian Parliament and will come in addition to repurchasing the equipment that has already been donated to Ukraine. 15 Feb 24. Saab has received an order from the Government of Canada for the short-range air defence system RBS 70 NG. The order value is approximately CAD 227m (SEK 1.8bn) with deliveries starting during 2024. The order includes all necessary equipment to operate the RBS 70 NG, including firing units, missiles, transport vehicles, training and support. Following a competitive procurement process, Saab’s offer was chosen to meet the urgent operational requirement for Canada’s Soldier Portable Air Defence System Program. Through this programme, Saab will provide long term air defence support to the Canadian Armed Forces, with a specific focus on their Enhanced Forward Presence in Latvia. 14 Feb 24. Bharat Electronics Limited (Bel), a Hyderabadi defence supplier, secured a contract to supply the Indian Ministry of Defence (MoD) with 11 ‘Shakti’ EW systems and supplementary equipment. Under a contract worth Rs2.26bn crore ($273m), the systems will be installed on-board leading warships across the Indian Navy fleet. The project will generate employment equal to 250,000 man-days over a period of four years. 155 local industry partners will participate in delivering the systems, including micro, small, and medium sized enterprises (MSMEs). 09 Feb 24. DSC Collaborative Research Grants to fund WA Defence studies. The Perth, WA-based Defence Science Centre has award six Collaborative Research Grants, totalling $900,000, to WA researchers. The Grants are a co-contribution between the WA Government, Defence Science and Technology Group (DSTG) and Next Generation Technology Fund. The Collaborative Research Grant (CRG) program, now in its fifth year, received 16 applications for this round of grants. Of the top six ranked projects, three were identified as being related to potential use in AUKUS-related technologies. An underwater messaging system, three-dimensional environmental mapping technology and on-site monitoring of copper concentrations are some of the projects funded by the CRG. Last year saw CRG funds used to build a successful prototype of an unmanned robot which can be controlled by hand gestures via Virtual Reality glasses. Applicants are able to apply for grants up to $150,000 and projects are assessed against criteria for collaboration, feasibility and impact. Since 2019 the program has provided over $4 m to support defence research projects in Western Australia.The CRG is one of the initiatives delivered by the Defence Science Centre (DSC) which aims to facilitate increased collaboration between Defence, academia and industry within WA, in providing innovative solutions for Defence and national security.
