10 Sep 19. Defence and technology company, MASS, has delivered its first Cyber Risk and Resilience Assessment for fellow Cohort plc subsidiary, Chess Dynamics. Created in-house by MASS, the exercise is undertaken by senior management boards and meets the growing demand for increased resilience to the intensifying cyber threat.
The unique assessment is an interactive facilitated session, involving a presentation to a company management board to explain complex cyber threats and various potential hacker motivations. Additionally, the programme includes a cyber crisis management exercise, running participants through a cyber incident against a generic organisation. The exercise provides participants with the opportunity to assess their own plans and preparations so that lessons can be learned and discussed in the context of their own company.
Uniquely, the Cyber Risk and Resilience Assessment involves all members of the management board voting anonymously on how they expect their company to act or react in various situations; this provides a clear indication of whether there is a common understanding of the necessary responses to various key decision points.
The assessment has taken place at a time when UK companies are experiencing unprecedented cyber risk. According to the government’s Cyber Security Breaches Survey 2019, 1,110 businesses have suffered more than one cyber breach every month. The Department of Culture, Media & Sport report found that only half of these affected companies had a proper training regime, while less than 20% had followed the Government’s ten steps to Cyber Security, highlighting the need for effective preparation.
Chess Dynamics Managing Director, David Tuddenham, commented, “Since being acquired by Cohort in December 2018 and becoming aware of the services offered by MASS, the Chess management board were keen to exercise their preparations and processes against the possibility of a cyber attack and how resilient these processes were. The interactive questioning and anonymous answers kept us on our toes and was highly engaging.”
In addition, MASS now offer an e-learning capability for staff to develop their understanding of cyber security risks and what they can do to mitigate a cyber attack. The online course lasts about an hour and participants that pass are awarded an OFQUAL certificate of achievement.
MASS Head of Cyber and Law Enforcement, Kimon Nicolaides commented, “MASS has been supplying large-scale training support for several years to industry and the military in the UK and overseas. We have utilised this experience and our Cyber Security domain knowledge to develop a unique interactive assessment that enables senior leadership teams to identify cyber risks, rapidly and comprehensively, in a way that has direct impact to the business.”

Talking points at the show are R&S WPU2000 (Wideband Processing Unit), the next generation ELINT processor, specifically developed to intercept both complex wideband and low power radar signals; R&S RAMON COMINT/CESM software modules; R&S NESTOR cellular network analysis system, and R&S ARDRONIS and GUARDION counter UAS solutions. At this year’s DSEi, taking place in London, Great Britain from 10 to 13 September 2019, Rohde & Schwarz (booth S1-350), showcases components of their next generation ELINT (Electronic Intelligence) system. One of the core components of the system is the new WPU2000, a multi-channel ELINT processor with a 2 GHz instantaneous real time bandwidth. The ELINT system collects, processes and analyses modern low power, low probability of intercept (LPI) radar signals as well as wideband, multi-RF, high duty cycle radar emissions, such as those that are produced by an Active Electronically Scanned Array (AESA).
The WPU2000’s fast scan speed contributes to a high Probability Of Intercept (POI). This feature coupled with the receiver’s high sensitivity, approx. -100 dBm at a 2 GHz bandwidth, detects high priority and LPI threats that remain invisible to legacy ELINT and Electronic Warfare (EW) systems.
The system can either be used as a stand-alone ELINT intercept and analysis payload system or individual components can be integrated into systems that use a high gain parabolic antenna or a Direction Finding (DF) antenna.
All Rohde & Schwarz ELINT and radar DF systems feature an automatic online de-interleaving and identification software (R&S RPP), advanced Technical Pulse Analysis (R&S TPA) software suite for ELINT signal analysis and an integrated radar data management and ELINT/EW database system. The systems are capable of data import and export and feature standardized interfaces.
The independent company also showcases advanced COMINT/CESM systems, in such R&S RAMON covers a broad scope of functions, e.g. it can be used to control equipment connected to a computer, to store and analyze data delivered by the equipment and to simplify routine tasks.
Rohde & Schwarz’ systems are modular and scalable and can be deployed on a variety of platforms. The company offers communication jamming systems integrated into complete field-proven EW solutions.
Also analyzing cellular networks and widely deployed by law enforcement and government agencies, armed forces and regulatory authorities worldwide, Rohde & Schwarz’ NESTOR cellular network analysis system supports reconnaissance missions focusing on non-military communications. Features include accurate multi-technology RF measurements for full cellular network insights and automatic RF channels identification.
Also presented is a counter-UAS solution that provides reliable drone detection and countering capabilities even under challenging signal scenarios. The modular and scalable systems can be deployed on a variety of platforms and are in operation in the field. Rohde & Schwarz’ R&S ARDRONIS counter UAS solution effectively detects and disrupts a drone’s control uplink signal at a very early point. R&S ARDRONIS monitors remote control uplink and drone downlink signals (in all relevant frequency bands) and can detect and locate those at an approx. range of 1.5 km under average (urban, highly congested frequency bands) and 5-7 km under optimal conditions.
With its partners ESG and Diehl Defence, Rohde & Schwarz furthermore offers a mission-proven modular multisensor UAS detection and defense system called GUARDION that includes the R&S ARDRONIS sensors and countermeasures. Already tried and tested in various major political events and in operation with many customers worldwide, GUARDION provides secure detection and defense against drones in stationary, mobile or deployable configurations, adapted to the individual requirements of customers and situations.

New HUNTR™ software application lets JTACs and TACPs easily create a Multi-Tactical Datalink Network that supports Link 16, VMF, Cursor-On-Target (CoT), JREAP, SADL, and CESMO data exchanges between ground forces, aircraft, ships, and C2 elements. Curtiss-Wright’s Defense Solutions division, a trusted leading supplier of Tactical Data Link (TDL) software and hardware solutions, announced today that its Tactical Communications Group (TCG) business has introduced HUNTR (TDL Hub and Network Translator), a new intelligent TDL translation gateway for Link 16, Variable Message Format (VMF), Cursor-On-Target (CoT), Joint Range Extension Applications Protocol (JREAP), Situational Awareness Data Link (SADL), and Cooperative ESM Operations (CESMO). Today, moving data between similar and dissimilar data links is a daunting task that can prove an obstacle to mission success. HUNTR is a breakthrough software application that significantly improves and simplifies the real-time translation and routing of TDLs. It provides warfighters and command and control centers with real-time access to accurate operational data in the field.
HUNTR supports the automatic routing, forwarding, and translation of J-Series, K-Series, CoT, and CESMO messages and automates processing and translation of multiple, simultaneous Digitally-Aided Close Air Support (DACAS) missions between ground JTAC kits equipped with VMF or CoT radios and air/land/sea Link 16 assets. Designed to run on any Microsoft Windows 10 supported platform, HUNTR delivers instant integration and interoperability for multiple heterogeneous TDLs. The HUNTR software is ideal for use in air, ground, sea, base stations, mobile land platforms, and command and control center applications.
“With the introduction of our new HUNTR Tactical Data Link Translation Gateway software solution, Curtis-Wright further strengthens our leadership position in the TDL community,” said Lynn Bamford, Senior Vice President and General Manager, Defense and Power. “HUNTR uniquely enables JTACs and TACPs to create a Multi-Tactical Datalink Network that supports SADL, Link 16, Cursor on Target, and VMF Combat Net Radio (CNR) data exchanges between ground forces, aircraft, ships, and C2 elements.”
Reliable Battlefield Communications
In the field, the warfighter needs a reliable, intuitive way to access information from a variety of data links. HUNTR’s operator-focused GUI is designed for ease of use and simplicity. Designed from the ground up to simplify the complex process of coordinating and managing the multiple data links used by in-field resources and command and control centers during missions, HUNTR provides unmatched interface and standards support. It supports touchscreen or keyboard-and-mouse operation and features a “green-good, red-bad” operator feedback scheme for rapid identification of terminal/radio operational status, routing errors, or areas in need of attention. Thanks to its intuitive, simple-to-use interface, HUNTR enables access to and configuration of multiple similar and dissimilar data links with little or no training. The GUI clearly indicates connectivity, information flow, and filtering of traffic, and enables operators to quickly and dynamically add or remove data links, and manage data flow between the links. HUNTR’s intelligent filtering simplifies the control of data flow when the sending and receiving links have disparities in information capacity, or where operator “information overload” is a concern. Additionally, the software automatically converts VMF 9-lines into multiple Link 16 messages and automatically updates and maintains Link 16 PPLI and Surveillance tracks and Command and Control (C2) messages.

11 Sep 19. MBDA working on new SPEAR-EW electronic warfare weapon. MBDA has been awarded a contract to demonstrate SPEAR-EW, a new electronic warfare version of the SPEAR weapon system family on order for the Royal Air Force (RAF). SPEAR-EW is being developed by MBDA in partnership with Leonardo to complete a wide range of Suppression of Enemy Air Defence (SEAD) missions, under a Technical Demonstration Programme (TDP) contract awarded by Defence Equipment & Support (DE&S). SPEAR-EW will integrate a cutting-edge miniaturised EW payload from Leonardo, which will act as a stand-in jammer to greatly increase the survivability of RAF aircraft and suppress enemy air defences, acting as a significant force multiplier.
Defence Minister Anne-Marie Trevelyan said: “These state-of-the-art electronic jammers will confuse our adversaries and keep our pilots safer than ever in the air. Paired with the devastating power of precision Brimstone and Meteor missiles, our world-class F-35 and Typhoon jets will continue to rule the skies in the years to come.”
Mike Mew, MBDA UK Director of Sales and Business Development, said: “SPEAR-EW is a revolutionary new capability that, alongside the existing SPEAR3 weapon, marks a fundamental change in the ability of friendly air forces to conduct their missions despite the presence of enemy air defences. Our vision for SPEAR is to create a swarm of networked weapons able to saturate and neutralise the most sophisticated air defences. Adding SPEAR-EW to the family alongside our existing SPEAR strike missile demonstrates the principle of introducing complementary variants to the SPEAR family that will add significant capability and force multiplication without the need to repeat the platform integration. We have an exciting roadmap of variants, spirals and technology insertions in the pipeline to further enhance the family as we move forward.”
The core of SPEAR-EW’s payload is Leonardo’s advanced, miniaturised Digital Radio Frequency Memory (DRFM) technology, which offers the most advanced and future-proof electronic jamming and deception available on the market today.
The new SPEAR-EW will complement the SPEAR network enabled miniature cruise missile, which is designed to precisely engage long range, mobile, fleeting and re-locatable targets in all weathers, day or night, in the presence of countermeasures, obscurants and camouflage, while ensuring a safe stand-off range between the aircraft and enemy air defences. Powered by a turbojet engine the SPEAR missile offers over double the range, and a far more flexible operating envelope, when compared to a conventional glide weapon. SPEAR-EW utilises this long endurance through its capacity to be launched at enhanced stand-off ranges and loiter while carrying out its jamming mission.
The compact size of the SPEAR family allows four weapons to be carried internally in each of the two internal weapons bay of the F-35, or three per station on the Eurofighter Typhoon. SPEAR-EW will keep the same form and fit as the baseline SPEAR to enable a single integration pathway and launcher solution.
SPEAR family complements MBDA’s wider portfolio of strike weapons, filling the gap between the large and very-long range Storm Shadow deep strike missile and the highly accurate Brimstone close-air-support missile.
The SPEAR weapons system also recently completed a set of ground trials and fit-checks of a loaded three-pack SPEAR launcher onto a Eurofighter Typhoon fighter aircraft. The work was undertaken by a joint engineering team from MBDA, BAE Systems, and the Ministry of Defence’s Defence Equipment and Support (DE&S), and took place at BAE Systems’ flight test site in Warton, Lancashire.
