11 Feb 19. Spectra Group (UK) Ltd to exhibit SlingShot tactical communications system for the first time at IDEX 2019. Spectra Group (UK) Ltd is an internationally renowned specialist provider of secure voice, data and satellite communications systems, specifically optimized for use in remote and challenging environments.  Following significant interest from the Middle East and Asia, particularly regarding their battle-winning SlingShot tactical communications system, Spectra Group (UK) Ltd will this year be exhibiting at the International Defence Exhibition and Conference, IDEX, for the first time.

IDEX is the only international defence exhibition and conference in the Middle East and North African (MENA) region and takes place 17-21 February 2019 at the Abu Dhabi National Exhibition Centre (ADNEC).  IDEX showcases the latest technology across land, sea and air sectors of defence, providing a strategically important opportunity for Spectra to exhibit their unique SlingShot tactical communications system.  Spectra Group (UK) Ltd will be located at stand number 05-C03 in the British Pavilion.

Spectra’s SlingShot is a small appliqué that provides in-service tactical VHF and UHF radios with a Beyond Line of Sight Communications on The Move capability (BLOS COTM).  In addition to standard voice and data C2, SlingShot can facilitate a wide range of capabilities such as remote biometric analysis, fire mission planning, remote tracking, border security and inter-agency operations.  Man-portable or vehicle-borne (land sea and air), useable on the move, delivering flexible channel leasing and with minimal increase in training-burden, SlingShot redefines tactical communication capabilities.

Recent world-wide exhibits of SlingShot have been met with substantial international interest.  Considerable excitement has been generated over SlingShot’s capability to significantly extend the range of in-service tactical radio systems, without the need for users to buy new radio systems, carry additional bulky equipment or conduct extensive additional training.

Simon Davies, CEO of Spectra Group said: “Spectra is very excited to be exhibiting for the first time at IDEX 2019.  We intend to maximize this fantastic opportunity to establish and deepen relationships with Partners, regional government departments, defence and security agencies and international businesses.” He added, “We are especially delighted to be able to exhibit SlingShot in the MENA region as a further opportunity to follow up on the significant amount of interest that has already been generated in the system.”

Spectra will be showcasing the SlingShot tactical communications system on Stand 05-C03 in the British Pavilion.

15 Feb 19. Tellumat Defence & Security, the South African defence, security and communications supplier, and part of the Tellumat Group, will be participating in the 2019 edition of the IDEX international defence exhibition and conference, to be held from 17 to 21 February at ADNEC, Abu Dhabi in the United Arab Emirates.

Tellumat’s ASTUS UAS

Among the products Tellumat will promote is their ASTUS Unmanned Aerial System (UAS). Launched at the Africa Aerospace and Defence exhibition in September 2018, ASTUS is a medium-size, medium-range tactical surveillance UAS, suitable for lengthy day / night missions requiring real-time surveillance data collection and delivery, such as border and coastal security, environmental protection and peacekeeping missions. It can also be used in the cost-effective training of UAS crews for beyond-line-of-sight operations of larger UASs.

The aircraft has a wingspan of 5.2 metres and a maximum take-off weight of 92 kg. It is powered by a 210cc fuel-injected 2-stroke motor providing 8 hours of flight time at 5,000 feet above sea level.

Low latency payload control and monitoring is available via the ground control station (GCS). The modular and portable GCS can be networked to allow control of ASTUS by more than one pilot and more than one payload operator geographically who could be separated across very large mission areas. Quick to deploy and easy to operate in a wide range of missions, the system has a minimum crew requirement of only four, comprising a pilot, payload operator, safety pilot and an aircraft technician. The ASTUS UAS is provided with all the necessary support equipment, operational spares and base spares to allow for extended operations without external support. ASTUS addresses the market need for high-end UAS performance in a compact, cost-effective package, accommodating various types of payloads.

Data Links and IFF

Tellumat will also be promoting its families of ground-to-air and air-to-ground command and control video / data links, as well as its identification friend or foe (IFF) interrogators and transponders, together with unique-per-country national secure mode solutions.

Partnerships

Tellumat’s diverse offering and broad skill set provide a solid platform for partnerships that promote mutual self-reliance and strengthen government ties between countries, says Brian Ferguson, Key Accounts Manager for Tellumat’s Defence & Security division. “True and meaningful partnership is underpinned by advanced technology transfer,” he adds.

Tellumat has a full range of engagement options, from simple agreements of sale through to training on installation and maintenance, integrated logistic support, manufacturing and development collaboration. “Whatever the requirement, our contract engagements seek to transfer technology and the skills to build the self-reliance of our partners.”

This contributes to leading South African companies like Tellumat having the credentials to be excellent partners in (but not limited to) the Middle East, he adds.

14 Feb 19. Ultra Electronics debuts NSS multidomain comms suite. Ultra Electronics is unveiling a ‘flexible architecture solution’ designed to optimise secure communications between land, air, and maritime platforms in a joint operating environment. Speaking to Jane’s ahead of the launch at IDEX 2019 in Abu Dhabi on 17 February, company officials explained said the National Secure Solution (NSS) was devised to fill capability gaps in the interoperability of communications across the various domains.

“The NSS is a comprehensive suite of secure communications products, designed to integrate and meet the needs of military end users wishing to deploy a common suite of communications products across all their platforms,” a company spokesperson told Jane’s. (Source: IHS Jane’s)

04 Feb 19. Leading safety equipment manufacturer and supplier Survitec will introduce two new protective suits for chemical, biological and radioactive environments at IDEX, which takes place in Abu Dhabi from 17 – 21 February.

The DEMRON ICE suit incorporates patented nanotechnology to protect against low-level gamma radiation. Studies carried out by Lawrence Livermore National Defence Laboratory show that the suit provides at least 50% shielding of gamma rays of up to 130Kev.

Manufactured from liquid metal particles the DEMRON fabric has a high thermal conductivity and cools the wearer down on the inside of the garment as heat transfers through the fabric.

Paul Parry, Group CBRN Business Manager, Survitec, said: “This suit will revolutionise the way CBR (chemical, biological and radiological) suits can be worn. Not only will it keep the first responder cool, but it will also protect against low-level gamma radiation.

“Many standard CBR suits on the market offer radiological protection against radioactive particulates created by an explosion, as these particles can dusted off. However, unlike the DEMRON ICE suit, they do not protect against low level gamma radiation.”

The second suit being showcased by Survitec for the first time is the NormMb suit. Combining carbon and membrane technologies, the hybrid suit has been designed for use in chemical/biological scenarios and protects against traditional warfare agents, such as mustard gas. One of the benefits of the hybrid system is that liquid threats are defeated in accordance with NATO standards.

Parry said: “The NormMb suit has a waterproof and liquid agent protective layer. This stops the suit being affected by water or excessive perspiration. It brings together carbon and membrane technologies to create a unique performance characteristic.”

Designed for land-forces, the suit uses a material that contains filters equipped with spherical activated carbon, as well as air, water and gas treatment filters. It is highly air permeable and adsorbent, washable and resistant to seawater.

Both suits will be available to view at the Survitec Stand 05-C22 at IDEX, where company representatives will be on hand to discuss the suits’ features and the new fabric technology used in their development.

Survitec will also be showcasing these new suits, along with a range of new safety products and boats, in daily “in-action” demonstrations taking place in the marina adjacent to the IDEX exhibition.
