28 May 02. Both President George W. Bush and NATO General Secretary Lord Robertson said Tuesday that the European members of the alliance will have to face up to increasing their defense spending in order to modernize their military forces(See BATTLESPACE Vol. 5 Issue 4).
Speaking at a NATO gathering in Italy that expanded Russia ‘s role in the alliance, Robertson also chided the U.S., saying it should do more to share technology with its European allies and open its markets more to imports. Bush noted that the U.S. itself has already begun boosting military spending to make sure that the U.S. armed forces can combat terrorism.
