Future Firepower Requirements Outlined at Close Combat Symposium By Julian Nettlefold

Close Combat Symposium 2025, took place from 1–3 July at the Defence Academy of the UK in Shrivenham. The message from this year’s CCS was Delivering lethal effect – how do we harness digital targeting to enhance the dismounted close combat kill web?

A number of the excellent presentations over the 3 days looked at the British Army’s plan to not only enhance lethality as required by CGS General Sir Roly Walker but also changes in tactics to defeat the growing drone threat to front line forces.

This year’s Theme: Delivering lethal effect – how do we harness digital targeting to enhance the dismounted close combat kill web?

  • The Land Operating Concept has Recce-Strike at it’s heart. Not a new concept, and being played-out in real-time today, yet one which is a departure from how the British Army saw itself operating previously. How can we harness existing technology to immediately tighten the kill-web?
  • What are the new equipment and emerging concept opportunities to ensure the close combat fight is weighted in the British Army’s favour?
  • Automation offers opportunity, but could also be an anchor. How do we ensure we automate the correct parts of the close fight at the right time?
  • Dismounted Close Combat remains an inevitable part of modern warfare. How do we layer effects and capabilities at small team and platoon levels to ensure overmatch against adversaries?
  • The digital kill-web is rapidly evolving; where should we be setting our sights in terms of capability milestones over the next 3, 5 and 10 years?
  • Much of what could be achieved is reliant on an unassured energy supply. What can be done to balance technology’s demand versus the force’s ability to sustain it?
  • Enhancing lethality is as much about survivability as it is about calibre and rates of fire. How can we improve battlefield survivability now, and in the next 10 years?

Format

The event was held over three days.

  1. Day 1 was at the Defence Academy of the UK in Shrivenham and provides insight from Army HQ and other customers on their intent for the future. This is supplemented by presentations from academia and industry.
  2. Day 2 took place at Cranfield University’s COTEC range facility on Salisbury Plain. This involves live-firing demonstrations from industry as well as an opportunity for delegates to fire small arms from different manufacturers and with different optics and technologies. There is also the opportunity to showcase and demonstrate autonomous and remote technologies.
  3. Day 3 was back at Shrivenham and provides more technology briefs from industry and academia.

Project Grayburn

 

Project Grayburn rifle programme still in concept phase

The Ministry of Defence has reiterated that Project Grayburn, the British Army’s effort to replace the SA80A3 service rifle, remains in its concept phase, with early work focused on defining capability needs and engaging with industry. In response to written parliamentary questions tabled by Ben Obese-Jecty MP (Conservative, Huntingdon), Minister for Defence Maria Eagle confirmed that the programme is still at the exploratory stage.

 

“Project GRAYBURN is currently in the concept phase with the aim of identifying and understanding the capability requirements,” she stated, adding that considerations include “performance, interoperability and complexity.”

 

While full details remain under wraps due to commercial sensitivities, the Minister noted that further updates will be outlined in the forthcoming Defence Investment Plan. The plan, expected in the autumn, will replace the current Defence Equipment Plan and expand on capability investments set out in the 2025 Strategic Defence Review. The British Army currently fields the L85A3, the latest variant of the long-serving SA80 family, as its standard-issue rifle. First introduced in the 1980s, the SA80 underwent several overhauls to improve reliability, ergonomics and weight distribution, culminating in the current A3 version. Despite these improvements, the Army has acknowledged the need to move towards a more modern platform. The projected out-of-service date for the L85A3 is currently 2030, and Project Grayburn has been established to identify and deliver its replacement.

 

As part of early concept work, the Ministry has confirmed that “various rifle calibres are being considered”, alongside design characteristics such as adaptability to optics and modular attachments. Eagle also noted that the Army is taking “measures to mitigate any risk of potential capability vulnerabilities” during the transition period.

 

The MOD has already held discussions with manufacturers and industry experts to evaluate how the Land Industrial Strategy and UK production capacity might influence the future weapon’s development. While the overall cost of the programme remains unknown, it will depend on the eventual scope and complexity of the selected design.Project Grayburn aims to produce a next-generation individual weapon tailored to the evolving demands of modern conflict, combining reliability, lethality and interoperability with allies.

Beretta Defense Technologies UK (BDT UK)

Beretta Defense Technologies UK (BDT UK) briefed BATTLESPACE Editor Julian Nettlefold about the range of weapons the company is proposing for its Project Grayburn offering, the UK Requirement to replace the venerable L85A3 (SA80) and other infantry weapons. After the brief the Editor was challenged to a drone shoot using the Benelli shotgun with advanced cartridges specially designed to bring down drones at close quarter. The Editor had some direct hits!

The Sako M23 5.56mm assault rifle is a modern, modular weapon system developed by Finnish manufacturer Sako, designed to meet the needs of NATO forces. It features a short-stroke gas piston operation, monolithic upper receiver, and M-LOK forend, allowing for enhanced durability and accessory attachment. The rifle is equipped with ambidextrous controls, a telescoping Magpul CTR stock, and a full-length NATO Accessory Rail (STANAG 4694) for mounting optics. It uses 30-round detachable polymer box magazines and is compatible with Ase Utra BoreLock suppressors. The M23 is currently being adopted by the Finnish and Swedish armed forces, with deployment starting in 2024 and 2025, respectively.

Other systems to be procured related to Grayburn include HMNVS, the SILLS sniper pack, TCOS and ABILLS NVG systems, ballistic calculators and the MIRTL Target locator, GPMG night sights at £25k per soldier giving a total of £750m.

FNH UK presented a family of weapons, all with a common Receiver, which the company is offering for Op Grayburn, the SA-80 replacement contract. The Editor fired the whole Range.

FN SCAR®-H MK2 Assault Rifle (7.62X51MM NATO CAL)

The FN SCAR®-H Mk2 STD assault rifle is chambered in 7.62x51mm NATO calibre and is available with barrels of various lengths (13” or 16”) . These barrels are interchangeable in less than 5 minutes.

FN SCAR®-SC

The SCAR Sub Compact (SC) on display was fitted with the Aimpoint T2 with spacer (32mm). The SCAR H was fitted with the Zeiss 3x30i with FN reticle. As a complement to the renowned FN SCAR® assault rifles, grenade launcher and precision rifles, FN Herstal proposes the FN SCAR®-SC Subcompact Carbine in 5.56x45mm NATO or 7.62x35mm/.300 BLK calibre. Regardless of the calibre, the FN SCAR®-SC is extremely compact and comes standard with a standard telescopic buttstock allowing a 3-position length adjustment. A wide choice of additional buttstock configurations are available to best suit to user morphology and mission at hand.

FN EVOLYS™ Machine Gun Range.

The strapline on the FN web site says that the FN EVOLYS™ fires like a machine gun and handles like a rifle. That description was spot on. The FN EVOLYS™ has an added extra of an anti-recoil absorption pad at the end of the buttstock which by its very description absorbs all the recoil and allows the shooter to keep the machine gun on target for better accuracy. This was the first time that the Editor had fired a machine gun from the standing position. The results were excellent with the lightness and modular design showing through on the handling of the weapon and ability to keep rounds on target during bursts of fire. The FN EVOLYS™ has been developed in two calibres, 5.56x45mm NATO and 7.62x51mm NATO.

FN EVOLYS™ 7.62 Ultralight Machine Gun

The brand new FN EVOLYS™ Ultralight Machine Gun combines the firing capabilities of a belt-fed machine gun with ergonomics and balance similar to an assault rifle, and complements the existing FN machine gun portfolio. The FN EVOLYS™ has been developed in two calibres, 5.56x45mm NATO and 7.62x51mm NATO.  The FN EVOLYS™ 7.62, with a weight of approx. 6.2 kilos, is much lighter than current reference machine guns. The sight on the Evolys 7.62mm was the new Elcan Specter DR1.5-6x (7.62).

UK mortar competition

Level Peaks showed its offering for the UK 120mm mortar requirement mounted on a Supacat Jackal 3.

The competition will employ a new ‘bake-off’ style approach to procurement.

 

The UK Ministry of Defence (MoD) plans on launching a new vehicle-based light mortar competition this year in a bid to bolster its land force’s mobile artillery capabilities.

Expected to go live in mid-2025, the project seeks to integrate a 120mm mortar onto an in-service light mobility vehicle, such as those manufactured by Supacat, the head of Defence Equipment & Support’s (DE&S) Future Capability Innovation (FCI), James Gavin, told DE&S in March.    The competition will be run by FCI’s Capability Acceleration team supported by the DE&S Engineering Delivery Partner (Aurora) and Project Delivery Partner (Equinox).

The companies behind the Aurora consortia include QinetiQ, AtkinsRéalis and BMT.

This competition follows a new approach to acquisition Gavin calls ‘off the shelf bake off’, whereby the MoD buys commercial off the shelf equipment from several companies before holding a ‘bake off’ to assess the kit.

This allows the “developers to iterate and advance their kit throughout the process to deliver faster more efficient competitions and equipment delivery,” Gavin said.

For the mortar programme, the intention is for two companies to be selected to participate in a competitive ‘bake-off’ demonstration to showcase the integration of their mortar systems on an in-service light mobility vehicle.

A batch of mortar systems will be procured to help understand their capability before full roll out, Gavin said.

Sitting within DE&S, FCI explores and accelerates innovative technology, including from smaller companies, into operational use.

The UK Ministry of Defence (MOD) requires a close fires solution to boost integral firepower at unit and sub-unit level. Working in collaboration with ST Engineering we present the 120mm Ground Deployed Advanced Mortar System (GDAMS).

GDAMS is more than just a mortar system; it is a strategic asset designed to meet the British Army’s future operational needs and is primed for export to the UK’s partners. By leveraging its platform-agnostic, modular and highly deployable features, GDAMS positions the UK at the forefront of next-generation, digitally enabled indirect fire systems. The partnership with ST Engineering also ensures continued innovation through a spiral development roadmap, which includes integrating AI and automation.

In a world of ever-changing uncertainty, it is more critical than ever to provide integrated solutions that deliver unmatched capability, availability and adaptability.

A vehicle mounted GDAMS for every mission

The 120mm GDAMS can be operated by a two-person crew and boasts rapid deployment and stowage times of just 15 seconds, providing unmatched mobility and responsiveness in high-tempo operations. The hinged mortar system is vehicle agnostic, allowing it to be mounted on various vehicles, including in-service platforms such as Jackal, Coyote and Foxhound. The 120mm GDAMS is compatible with a full suite of standard smoothbore munitions: high explosive, illumination, IR illuminated and smoke.  It is capable of precision and extended range (9km) functionality with manual, electronic and smart fuzes, making it the ideal choice for any mission.

The versatility of the 120mm GDAMS is complemented by advanced fire control and targeting systems that enhance accuracy, effectiveness and reduces the time to engage targets. The 120mm GDAMS also offers the patented blast diffuser to drastically reduce noise exposure, increasing stealth and crew safety.

The fully digitalised communication system is both quicker for operators and reduces the risk of human error when manually inputting co-ordinates, leading to a shorter deployment time and more accurate adjustments.

UK sovereignty at the heart of production

Working with ST Engineering’s world-leading technology, the 120mm GDAMS will be manufactured at our production facility in Devonport, Plymouth. Production will support UK sovereignty by leveraging a British supply chain, including the re-establishment of barrel manufacture in the UK through our partnership with Perfect Bore, also exhibiting at CCS, who bring exceptional pedigree in barrel manufacture.

Together with building and sustaining a truly UK supply chain; with a successful bid, the 120mm GDAMS production line will also create around 70 new skilled roles at our Devonport facility, as well as additional jobs within the wider supply chain. The new roles will leverage and upskill our existing workforce in Plymouth, as well as offer development opportunities to those who have previously found it difficult to gain employment in the local area through our skills-based work academy programme.

Our state-of-the-art production facility at Devonport sits within the bounds of the South Devon Freeport Zone. With the ability to export at competitive rates due to its Freeport production base, GDAMS offers significant growth potential for UK defence exports, contributing to the nation’s long-term economic and strategic goals whilst simultaneously supporting the UK’s Land Industrial Strategy.

Project Vanaheim

The Ministry of Defence has published what’s called a “Prior Information Notice” detailing their intent to eventually purchase a new, fully integrated air defence system.

“This PIN is the first within a series informing the Industry of the strategic direction of the Land Ground Based Air Defence (Land GBAD) Programme. The intent of this PIN is to provide notification of a planned Market Interest Day to be held in October 2022 (venue in Bristol); which will seek the views from Industry Partners to as (as to) how the identified threats are to be addressed and capabilities integrated across the Programme.

The Authority would welcome innovative ideas, insights and perspectives from Industry Partners on how the Land GBAD capability requirement can be addressed including the potential for industry and MOD collaboration.”

The requirements are also set out.

The notice states that the land GBAD Programme has been established in response to the Army’s requirement for a fully integrated Air Defence system of systems.

“This is a Category A Government Major Project Portfolio (GMPP) programme. This will be an enduring capability that will be delivered through incremental capability uplifts over the next 10 years.”

The identified ‘Single Statement of User Need’ for Land GBAD is stated as:

“Land GBAD must provide sufficient, effective capability to warn, inform, deter and defeat all air threats (including aircraft, missiles, munitions, and UAS), in order to prevent adversary interference from the air inhibiting Joint Force freedom of manoeuvre. Land GBAD will provide lethal and non-lethal defeat mechanisms and minimise the risk it presents to friendly and neutral air users. It will be deployable on multi-domain operations, integrated, scalable up to divisional level, and in joint and multi-national operations to Protect, Engage, Constrain and Fight.”

Identified capabilities to be delivered and enhanced by the Land GBAD programme include:

  • Short-Range Air Defence (SHORAD);
  • Medium-Range Air Defence (M-RAD);
  • Counter Small Aerial Targets (C-SAT) for SHORAD and MRAD; and
  • All Arms Counter Small Uncrewed Aircraft Systems (All Arms C-sUAS).

These capabilities will be incrementally delivered as a multifaceted and multi-layered programme over a 10-year period.

“Aerial threats to be targeted range from Class 1 Unmanned Aircraft Systems (UAS) including swarms, artillery, munitions, Attack Helicopters and Fixed Wing Aircraft, with potential for larger munitions and the introduction of future novel weapons.”

SoldierWorks Features at CCS

What is SoldierWorks?

SoldierWorks develops and delivers, ‘an integrated soldier system’ which seeks to maximise the performance by enhancing the lethality, agility and resilience of our soldiers, enabling them to fight and win across the full spectrum of Defence tasks.

The overall aim is to provide each soldier with the very latest capabilities be it clothing or equipment that enhances their lethality, agility, and resilience, enabling them to fight and win across the full spectrum of war fighting scenarios.

Data from tests, trials and experimentation informs decision making, ensuring that the capabilities delivered by SoldierWorks are the best they can be for our soldiers.

Integrated Soldier System

In future, an Integrated Soldier System will enable dismounted soldiers to manoeuvre and communicate, detect, and engage threats.It enhances their ability to fight and win in battle maximising the capability enhancements offered in today’s fast moving technological era.

The Integrated Soldier System starts with the soldier and considers the soldier as a human platform and includes the various collective teams that soldiers form.

Teams our soldiers belong to on the battlefield, such as sections and platoons, are what deliver the capability demanded by Defence.

The Integrated Soldier System seeks to develop equipment in an iterative way which embodies the Army’s flexible approach to modernisation.

A fully integrated soldier system is the fundamental building block of our combat capability that is lethal, agile, resilient, and expeditionary.

What will SoldierWorks deliver?

SoldierWorks is a cross functional team consisting of Civil Servants, Military Personnel, and partners in the Defence Science and Technology Laboratory (Dstl) and Defence Equipment and Support (DE&S) who work together to enhance our soldier’s capability further.

SoldierWorks is exploiting the Army’s experimentation programme, putting emerging technologies in the hands of the soldier to support the development of new capabilities.

This will help to design, develop and deliver enhancements to the soldier’s performance and or equipment to enabling them to fight and win.

The team speed up the introduction of new soldier system capabilities to the Field Army by being involved in the experimentation process and driving through the procurement of new solutions.

Here are some examples of equipment the programme has already delivered with much more on the way:

  • Night vision sights for a variety of different rifles to improve the soldier’s ability to identify enemy targets earlier at night.
  • Binocular night vision goggles with a thermal clip-on system to enable a fused (thermal and image intensified) image.
  • Handheld medium-range target locator and ballistic calculator for sniper pairs.
  • A range of improvements to combat clothing and equipment so that it fits individuals better and makes life easier for the user.

This is a flavour of what we hope to introduce in the future:

  • New and more effective weapon systems.
  • An integrated Soldier Electronic Architecture.
  • Improved combat clothing that is optimised for different roles.

AEI Systems and CANIK ARMS at CCS

 

AEI Systems, a cornerstone of UK defence manufacturing for over 50 years, and CANIK ARMS, unveiled several advanced systems, headlined by the VENOM 30 x 113 mm gun — a new-generation weapon developed and produced in the UK. Integrated into the UNIROBOTICS TRAKON 30 Remote Weapons Station and mounted on the versatile NMS UK Dragon 4×4 Protected Mobility Vehicle, the VENOM 30 exemplifies British defence innovation, modular integration, and combat readiness.

TRAKON Remote Controlled Weapon Station (RCWS) equipped with the Venom LR 30x113mm Auto Cannon is a state-of-the-art system enhancing the combat capabilities of various platforms, providing superior firepower and versatility for modern warfare.

CANiK M2 QCB
