24 Nov 21. Onwards and Upwards! Chepstow Race Day Raises Over £20,000 for SSAFA. The 2021 Chepstow charity race day, organised by BATTLESPACE Publications in aid of SSAFA, the Armed Forces charity, was an exciting one with a great turnout from the military and defence industry community alike. SSAFA hosted 100 people sponsored by BATTLESPACE Publications, Exensor, Fujitsu, Hensoldt, Jankel, SERCO, Spectra, The Square, TVS and Viasat where, with the great help of auctioneer Steve O’Leary OBE, another £22,00 was raised for SSAFA on top of the £140,000 raised since the inception of the SSAFA Raceday in 2014. We were delighted to host 6 Chelsea Pensioners and 2 members of the London Taxi Association, on the table kindly donated by Jankel. We also thank Hall & Watts who sadly could not attend the day but donated their table sponsorship.
General Sir Adrian Bradshaw KCB OBE, Governor of the Royal Hospital Chelsea, made the keynote speech outlining the pitfalls and perils facing the world community in the coming years and how everyone should recognise the contribution made by the military in world affairs and how ‘boots on the ground’ are so important in world conflicts.
Overall, the charity race day raised over £22,000 for SSAFA. The BATTLESPACE SSAFA Chepstow Race Day began in 2014 and has raised more than £160,000 for SSAFA so far.
In addition to the SSAFA guests, Chepstow hosted 1750 attendees including many ex and current servicemen and women who attended free of charge. Chepstow will make an exciting announcement about the plans for2022 in January, watch this space!
Julian Nettlefold, Publisher of BATTLESPACE said: “We were delighted with the success of our sixth SSAFA Chepstow Race Day, and thank all our sponsors for their continued support, particularly in the ensuing COVID outbreak which has caused so many uncertainties. Paul Fleming CEO of TEK Military Seating Ltd. Was nominated as BATTLESPACE Businessman of The Year 2021 and we look forward to welcoming him and his team back next year to hand over the award to the 2022 winner.
I would also like to thank the staff at Chepstow racecourse, the SSAFA Team and Steve O’Leary who conducted another successful auction. Once again, we raised a record amount for SSAFA to build on the £140,000 raised since 2014. We look forward to welcoming everyone to Chepstow on November 18th, 2022.”
Annabel Venn, Head of Events at SSAFA said: “We are extremely grateful to BATTLESPACE Publications and specifically Julian Nettlefold for continuing with this brilliant event and their generous support of SSAFA. The money raised will go towards supporting our Armed Forces community and helping change their lives for the better.”
24 Nov 21. Supacat awarded Employer Recognition Scheme Gold Award for outstanding support towards the Armed Forces. The UK military vehicle developer, Supacat, has received the Employer Recognition Scheme Gold Award for its outstanding support towards the Armed Forces community. The Employer Recognition Scheme Gold Awards represent the highest badge of honour for organisations that employ and support those who serve, veterans and their families. This year’s awards were announced by Minister for Defence People and Veterans, Leo Docherty. Supacat is a signatory and upholder of the Armed Forces Covenant and in 2018 received the Silver Award, one of the prerequisites for achieving Gold Award status. Supacat has since enhanced its company policies in support of the scheme and nominated an ambassador to encourage and guide other companies to engage in the Employer Recognition Scheme and support the Armed Forces community.
“We are proud that Supacat has stepped up through the criteria over the years and achieved Gold Award status”, said Phil Applegarth, Director and Head of Supacat, who is a Reservist and the Supacat Ambassador for the Employment Recognition Scheme.
“We spend considerable time helping those who are disadvantaged, whether it be physical or mental. We have also demonstrated our support in having sponsored the Armed Forces Para-sports team and we have continued our sponsorship to Team Army since its conception over a decade ago”.

SSAFA, the Armed Forces charity, has been providing lifelong support to our Forces and their families since 1885. In 2020, our teams of volunteers and employees helped more than 79,000 people in need, the currently serving (both regulars and reserves), veterans from the Second World War and those who have served in more recent conflicts, as well as their families. SSAFA understands that behind every uniform is a person. And we are here for that person – any time they need us, in any way they need us, for as long as they need us.
