07 Dec 22. Raytheon Intelligence & Space to Gamify Master Air Attack Planning for USAF.

  • Raytheon BBN will create a collaborative game to enable the evaluation and refinement of air attack options 9x faster than current methods

A Raytheon BBN-led team was recently awarded a contract, with a potential value of $25m over three years, to work on the U.S. Air Force Research Laboratory’s Fight Tonight program. Fight Tonight will enable military leaders to rapidly determine the most effective way to achieve objectives during complex air attack scenarios by evaluating plan effectiveness against many possible situations and outcomes using faster-than-real-time executions of red and blue strategies.

Using a technique of collaborative gameplay and layering—building options and parameters onto a master scenario—the system will help operators identify visually which options have the greatest likelihood of achieving commander’s intent, even in the face of uncertainty. This collaborative technique with auto-exploration and AI assistance will shrink planning time from an average of 36 hours to four. Additionally, by layering possibilities, gray space can be identified—what things haven’t been considered that deserve a closer examination—such as adverse weather, an interruption of communications, or unanticipated adversary tactics.

“Today’s planning requires large teams of people to create a plan—often in a siloed manner—that is based on a likely scenario,” said John Myers, Raytheon BBN principal investigator for the effort. “But the battlespace is dynamic, which leads to obsolete plans once an actual engagement is underway.”

The Raytheon BBN-led team includes Breakaway Games, Raytheon Missiles & Defense, and Raytheon Intelligence & Space. The work will be completed in Cambridge, Massachusetts; Rome, New York; and Hunt Valley, Maryland.

05 Dec 22. Latvian Air Force takes delivery of two Tarragon trainer aircraft. Manufactured by Latvian firm SIA Pelegrin, Tarragon will be used for training pilots and other operational tasks. The Latvian Ministry of Defence (MoD) has announced the delivery of two indigenously developed Tarragon two-seater trainer aircraft.

Manufactured by Latvia-based company SIA Pelegrin, the aircraft were handed over to the Latvian Air Force at Ādaži airfield on 2 December.

Following the delivery, the Latvian Air Force’s pilots flew the aircraft from Ādaži airfield to the National Armed Forces’ air base, which will be the permanent home base of the new Tarragons.

The arrival of the new trainer jets at the home base was marked by a welcome ceremony, in presence of Latvian Air Force commander colonel Viesturs Masulis.

Latvian Defence Minister Artis Pabriks said: “Thanks to the cooperation between the defence industry and military industry, not only automotive but also aircraft production has been reborn in Latvia.

“We can be proud of the achievements of our masters, following in the footsteps of the legendary constructor Kārlis Irbīte – already now interest in the models produced by the company is shown by many countries of the world!”

According to the Latvian MoD, the new Tarragons will be the first aircraft to be operated to train the Air Force’s trainee pilots and aircrew members.

The aircraft will also be deployed to perform a wide range of operational tasks and for maintaining qualifications.

Pelegrin Tarragon is a two-seater aircraft that can fly at a maximum height of 3.5km while operating at speeds of up to 370km/h. It also has a low maintenance cost.

The landing distance offered by aircraft on asphalt pavement is around 150m and the minimum take-off distance is 225m.

The aircraft were manufactured locally to support the MoD’s efforts to prioritise the involvement of domestic companies and organisations to enhance the National Armed Forces’ capabilities. (Source: airforce-technology.com)

02 Dec 22. US and Israel conduct bilateral fighter integration and refuelling drills. It was the first of several exercises scheduled to be undertaken by the two nations to bolster aerial capability. The US Air Force (USAF) has carried out a bilateral fighter escort and refuelling exercise with its Israeli counterparts over the Eastern Mediterranean Sea region. The exercise was conducted in the US Central Command (CENTCOM) area of operations (AOR) on 30 November.

The latest fighter integration and refuelling operation was the first of several exercises scheduled to be undertaken by the US and Israeli forces to enhance the bilateral aerial capability and interoperability.

The planned drills were a part of the joint US-Israel Strategic Partnership declaration signed between the two nations in Jerusalem earlier this year.

US Central Command commander general Michael Kurilla said: “This bilateral exercise demonstrates CENTCOM’s commitment to regional security.

“CENTCOM routinely demonstrates the ability to rapidly insert combat airpower into operations and exercises with our partners, and our ability to do the same across all domains decisively is a powerful deterrent.”

The assets representing the Israeli Air Force included F-15 Lightning II aircraft and F-16 fighter jets.

Meanwhile, the USAF deployed its F-15E Strike Eagles fighter jets and F-16 Fighting Falcon along with the KC-135 Stratotanker air-to-air refuelling aircraft.

The deployed USAF aircraft were from the Ninth Air Force, also referred to as the US Air Force Central (AFCENT).

The exercise allowed participant forces to enhance their joint tactics, techniques and procedures. It also strengthened the partnership between AFCENT and the Israeli Air Force.

AFCENT commander lieutenant general Alexus Grynkewich said: “This exercise showcases our commitment to partnering with Israel to counter threats to regional security and stability.

“The Israeli Air Force provides tremendous deterrent capability and capacity throughout the Middle East region, and we will continue to build opportunities to improve our integrated defences and ability to project combined airpower.” (Source: airforce-technology.com)

05 Dec 22. Norfolk Naval Shipyard opens $73.3m production training facility. The facility features 34 academic classrooms and 26 mock-up areas, and serve as the training hub for NNSY’s production workforce.

Norfolk Naval Shipyard (NNSY) in Virginia has inaugurated its new four-storey multipurpose production training facility as part of the Naval Facilities Engineering Systems Command’s (NAVFAC) Shipyard Infrastructure Optimization Program (SIOP).

The 157,000ft², $73.3m facility will consolidate training that was previously earlier spread across the NNS.

The facility features 34 academic classrooms and 26 mock-up areas.

It will serve as the training hub for NNSY’s production workforce of more than 4,500 employees as well as personnel working in the departments of quality assurance, operations, engineering and planning, and lifting and handling.

This facility will support future training needs related to Gerald R Ford Class Carriers and Virginia Class Submarines.

Featuring training areas intended for pipefitting, welding, crane and rigging, and motor and generator repair, the facility will offer applied instruction leveraging drydock, carrier shipboard, and fall protection mock-ups.

Among the amenities provided at the facility include outdoor seating areas, break rooms, study rooms and a mini-mart.

NNSY commander captain Dianna Wolfson said: “This facility will not only help in meeting our one mission in the repair, modernization and inactivation of our navy’s warships and training platforms, but absolutely to do it as one team.

“From this very place, we will be providing training for ships that will be in service decades from now, and training thousands upon thousands of shipyard employees who will develop and strengthen foundational skills for their entire careers.”

For the completion of the project, NNSY’s Resident Officer in Charge of Construction (ROICC) commander Kendall Chapman worked in coordination with engineering partner Clark Nexsen on finishing the initial design, and California-based RQ Construction for completing design and building the facility.

The ROICC oversees implementation of SIOP projects, which are currently estimated to be over $2.4bn. (Source: naval-technology.com)
