1. Another robust financial performance across the businesses
– Underlying earnings per share increased by 14% to 17.5p

The FT reported that BAE Systems reported a 26 per cent rise in first-half profits and offered a confident outlook for the year, saying it would continue to benefit from strong demand for armoured vehicles.

The company beat analysts’ expectations, announcing earnings before interest tax and amortisation for the six months to June 30 of £881m, including an exceptional profit of £61m on the disposal of a business. Pre-tax profit grew to £791m from £657m last year.

Sales were up 12 per cent to £7.75bn. The group also posted a record order book of £41.1bn, up from £31.7bn the year before.

Presenting his last results before retiring as chief executive, Mike Turner said the results were “underpinned by consistently good programme management” and gave the company ”excellent future visibility”.

The stellar performer was BAE’s land systems division, which saw its sales increase from £1.2bn to £2.59bn. Armoured trucks and mine-resistant vehicles have been a sweet spot for the defence industry, with the ground wars in Iraq and Afghanistan driving demand for better troop protection.
BAE has benefited from several orders in recent months, notably from the US. It had now received orders for more than 5,000 vehicles, Mr Turner said. Mr Turner retires from BAE at the end of August and will be replaced by Ian King, chief operating officer.

Underlying earnings per share for the period were up 14 per cent to 17.5p. BAE
