08 Oct 24. Miniature Interferometric Synthetic Aperture Sonar Excels in Annual Exercise.

Kraken Robotics’ MINSAS, integrated onto a range of uncrewed underwater vehicles, found more than 50 mine-like targets during the annual Portuguese Navy REPMUS exercise.

Kraken Robotics Inc.’s Miniature Interferometric Synthetic Aperture Sonar (MINSAS) was evaluated by five NATO navies at the Portuguese Navy annual Robotic Experimentation and Prototyping with Maritime Unmanned Systems (REPMUS) exercise.

Five Kraken MINSAS modules were integrated onsite to American, Dutch, Swedish, Belgian, and Portuguese uncrewed underwater vehicles (UUVs). These systems combined were able to locate more than 50 mine-like targets over the course of the exercise, including redundant coverages.

Kraken’s MINSAS was used for a wide range of tasks during the exercise including area search and reacquire/identify. Real-time beamforming and georeferencing facilitated the rapid recovery of acquired data from payloads, enabling immediate post-mission analysis of data when the UUVs returned to shore using SeeByte’s SeeTrack C2 System.

Kraken SAS was also used in a multi-national collaborative autonomy exercise to survey mine-like objects in a full ‘Find-Fix-Finish’ mission. SeeByte’s SeeTrack and Neptune collaborative autonomy software, combined with the U.S. Navy’s C2 and TAK (Team Awareness Kit), were used to plan and execute the multi-national exercise.

Additionally, SeeTrack provided the tasking of a VideoRay Defender remotely operated vehicle to conduct an in-stride digital ‘Finish’.

Taking place in Sesimbra and Troia, Portugal, the 2024 REPMUS exercise spanned from September 9th—27th, bringing together more than 30 nations, 2000 participants, and 100 autonomous assets to enable collaborative development and testing of concepts and requirements in support of multi-domain operations.

Greg Reid, President and CEO of Kraken Robotics, said, “REPMUS has been an invaluable experience for our team at Kraken, providing the opportunity to work directly with end-user navies, demonstrate the capabilities of MINSAS, support the rapid processing of data from multiple missions, and get real-time feedback from users that we can integrate into our product roadmap.

“Our team supported integration of SAS modules on several different UUV configurations including legacy REMUS systems that were more than 10 years old, the U.S. Navy’s MK-18 Mod 1, REMUS 100 NGR, and a Gavia vehicle.

“This illustrates the versatility of our technology to be rapidly deployed and exchanged between both new and legacy platforms, providing a significant capability enhancement for mine countermeasure operations from UUVs.” (Source: https://www.defenseadvancement.com/)

10 Oct 24. US Army Ponders Alternatives to Microsoft’s Troubled AR Goggles. The US Army’s $22bn Integrated Visual Augmentation System program has struggled, and the service is now open to recompeting the contract should another vendor present a better solution than what Microsoft has developed.

The system, known as IVAS, is an augmented reality headset meant to provide soldiers a single platform on which to fight, rehearse and train, increasing situational awareness and improving decision-making.

The Army in March 2021 awarded Microsoft a 10-year contract worth up to $21.9 bn for IVAS, but the initial version of the system experienced technical difficulties with a number of soldiers experiencing dizziness, headaches or nausea after wearing the goggles.

Microsoft and the Army redesigned the system, and the latest version, known as IVAS 1.2, is currently undergoing operational evaluations, with service officials expressing confidence the updated system will make it to the field.

However, that has not stopped the Army from exploring alternatives.

In December 2023, the service hosted an “Industry Day for IVAS Next,” the invitation to the event stating the Army “would inform interested companies of the IVAS Next requirements and acquisition path.”

Some 80 companies, including Microsoft, attended the event, according to the attendees list.

Doug Bush, assistant secretary for the Army for acquisition, logistics and technology, told reporters in September the service hadn’t determined if it would recompete the IVAS contract, but “the potential … for future competition is there, because I think there are so many companies in this space, and there’s so much dynamic tech here, that we certainly need to preserve the option of having a competition in the future if other people come with good solutions.

“The decision hasn’t been made yet to for sure go that route, but we’re setting conditions to where, if we decide to, we can,” he said. “In the meantime, Microsoft is doing a good job with its current contract. The evaluations are going broadly pretty well,” and “we’re still hoping to get there” with IVAS 1.2.

Microsoft is not sitting still as the Army mulls its options. Anduril — which also attended the IVAS Next industry day — announced in September it was collaborating with Microsoft on the program.

Anduril founder Palmer Luckey — who also founded virtual reality headset company Oculus VR — said in a release IVAS is his “top priority.”

“It’s one of the Army’s most critical programs being fielded in the near future, with the goal of getting the right data to the right people at the right time,” Luckey said.

The release stated that Anduril has successfully integrated its AI-enabled Lattice software system “into Microsoft’s IVAS hardware and software platform, enabling soldiers to see real-time threats across the battlespace.”

“Soldiers wearing Lattice-enabled IVAS headsets are rapidly warned of incoming autonomously detected airborne threats, enhancing survivability in complex, contested environments,” the release said.

An Anduril official speaking on background said in an email that having Lattice integrated into IVAS will be particularly useful for countering unmanned aerial systems.

“Our integration of Lattice with counter-UAS detection systems has greatly improved the speed and efficiency of processing data from multiple sources,” the company official said. “Lattice detects and assesses drone threats, sending this information directly to IVAS. Soldiers using IVAS get instant alerts and can track movements in real time, without needing to be involved in the detection process. This speeds up the early warning system, which is critical for improving response times and increasing soldier survival.”

A Microsoft spokesperson speaking on background said in an email the company has had “ongoing conversations” with Anduril about partnering on IVAS and that the partnership is currently limited to the integration of Lattice into the system.

“There was no change to any Army requirements,” the Microsoft spokesperson said. “Partnering with Anduril was a way to demonstrate the extensibility of IVAS in bringing enhanced situational awareness to the warfighter.”

The Army declined to comment on whether the service has received and tested Lattice-enabled IVAS headsets yet.

IVAS Product Manager Lt. Col. Denny Dresch told National Defense in February the Army is gearing up for a company-level operational test with IVAS 1.2 in spring 2025 that will inform the service’s full-rate production decision for the headset. During the September media roundtable, Bush gave no indication that the plan had changed.

The Army still plans to conduct a series of evaluations “between now and … next summer, so I think a decision timeline … is probably next year,” Bush said.

“I think the broad goal of bringing this kind of wearable tech in a military form factor to infantry units to make them more effective is something everyone in the Army, almost everyone, agrees on. How do we get there is the issue,” he said. “Is this exact version of IVAS that version, or do we need another spin of development?”  (Source: glstrade.com/National Defense)

09 Oct 24. Cuashub.com said today that MARSS completes NiDAR installation on superyacht.

MARSS has completed the installation of its NiDAR system on a 120-metre superyacht and is set to finalise the installation on the yacht’s 70-metre support vessel in the coming weeks. The $4 m project was completed within six months of securing the contract.

These deployments build upon MARSS’ C-UAS work in 2023, which saw the delivery of NiDAR systems to five ships, including three luxury yachts, a legacy yacht upgrade and the combat support ship, Asterix, for the Royal Canadian Navy.

NiDAR, known for its C-UAS and surface surveillance capabilities, has been tested and proven effective during the superyacht’s summer season. During unannounced drone flights by the yacht’s security team, the system successfully detected and tracked the UAS using the NiDAR system.

The NiDAR system provided timely alerts to the security team, enabling them to track and locate an unscheduled camera drone, as well as identifying both the launching vessel and its pilot

The installation integrates Echoshield radars and Aaronia X9 sensors, further enhancing the yacht’s drone detection and tracking capabilities.

Frederik Giepmans, Managing Director of MARSS Maritime, said:

“I am immensely proud of our team’s collaborative effort in delivering this cutting-edge system in such a short timeframe. This installation, on one of the world’s largest sailing yachts, not only demonstrates our technical abilities, but also reinforces our position as an industry leader in maritime security.”

“We look forward to wrapping up the project in the coming weeks, as our full attention now turns to the supporting vessel.”

The yacht’s crew and security team also noted that NiDAR detected more drones during testing than the previous system.

This installation builds on MARSS’s 2023 performance, which included delivering NiDAR systems to five ships, including luxury yachts, a legacy yacht upgrade and the Combat Support Ship Asterix for the Royal Canadian Navy. https://cuashub.com/en/content/marss-completes-nidar-installation-on-superyacht/ (Source: https://cuashub.com/)

08 Oct 24. Anduril lands $250m Pentagon contract for drone defense system. The Pentagon awarded Anduril Industries a contract worth $250 m to counter drone attacks against U.S. forces with the company’s recoverable Roadrunner interceptor.

Under the deal, which Anduril announced on Tuesday, the Defense Department will buy 500 Roadrunner all-up rounds as well as the firm’s portable Pulsar electronic-warfare capability, which can be integrated with aircraft to jam enemy systems.

“This latest contract award highlights Anduril’s commitment to investing its own research and development to support defense innovation, providing rapid, scalable solutions to safeguard U.S. forces,” the company said in a statement.

An Anduril spokesperson declined to name the firm’s DOD customer due to security concerns, but the company said the contract will serve multiple military services in “priority regions where U.S. forces face significant threats” from drones. Deliveries will begin this year and continue through the end of 2025.

The firm is already on a 10-year, indefinite-delivery, indefinite-quantity contract worth up to $1bn with U.S. Special Operations Command to supply counter-drone hardware and software, but the spokesperson would not confirm whether the new business is part of its SOCOM award.

That deal was announced in January 2022 and later that year, the command awarded Anduril $12.5m for Roadrunner. SOCOM also requested another $19 m for the technology in its fiscal 2024 budget request.

Anduril unveiled Roadrunner last December after spending two years secretly developing it with internal funding. At the time, the company’s founder Palmer Luckey told reporters that Roadrunner was in low-rate production with an initial U.S. customer for “hundreds of units.” He said the company plans to quickly scale to quantities in the hundreds of thousands.

The use of drones and loitering munitions on the battlefield has expanded in recent years. The department wants to learn from the ingenuity of the Ukrainian military, which has deployed small drones in response to Russia’s onslaught, but it also wants to develop a strong defense against the use of hostile drones by adversaries like Iran and its proxies.

The Pentagon created the Joint Counter-Unmanned Aircraft Systems Office to develop a coordinated, long-term response to drone threats in 2019, and in 2023, Deputy Defense Secretary Kathleen Hicks revealed a new DoD initiative called Replicator to field thousands of autonomous systems by next summer.

The department announced last week that Replicator’s next area of focus will be Counter-UAS.

According to Anduril, Roadrunner offers a solution for both sides of the challenge. Chris Brose, the company’s chief of strategy, told reporters last December the system — which can carry a variety of payloads — was built to adapt as DOD’s needs change.

“We’re very hopeful that the government will see in this capability what we see in it, which is a novel solution that is built to be adaptable to where those threats are going in the near future — which, by the way, has been a process that’s been playing out over the past few years, and it’s just going to get worse,” he said. 08 Oct 24. Raytheon secures $197m U.S. Army contract for Coyote interceptors. Raytheon has secured a new $197m contract from the U.S. Army to deliver Coyote interceptors, part of the military’s ongoing strategy to strengthen defences against UAS threats. The contract, announced by the Department of Defense in an email release last week, will run until September 2027, reflecting the Army’s continued investment in counter-drone technologies as threats from adversarial drones rise on modern battlefields.

The Coyote interceptors, developed by Raytheon, are ground-launched and radar-guided systems capable of neutralising enemy drones. These interceptors come in both kinetic and non-kinetic variants. The Army has integrated them into its larger “system of systems” to defend troops from low, slow and small UAS threats.

Earlier this year, the Army awarded Raytheon’s parent company, RTX Corp., a $75m contract for the production of 600 Coyote Block 2C interceptors, underlining the military’s increasing reliance on these systems. The contract announcement by the U.S. Department of Defense last week did not specify the number of interceptors to be produced in the new deal or the specific variants, and Army officials have not yet released further details.

The Army’s fiscal 2025 budget request includes $116.3m for additional Coyote interceptors, reflecting the high demand for counter-drone systems. According to previous planning documents, the Army’s projected needs include thousands of interceptors and hundreds of supporting systems, such as launcher systems and radar sensors, over the next few years.

With adversaries increasingly deploying drone technology, particularly in the U.S. Central Command region in the Middle East, the Coyote system is seen as a key part of the U.S. military’s counter-drone capabilities.

08 Oct 24. Cuashub.com said today that US Apache Helicopters defeat drone targets in Red Sands Exercise. During the recent iteration of the ‘Red Sands Exercise’ with the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, US Army AH-64 Apache Helicopters were seen to be practising the downing of drone targets. In footage posted earlier this week on the CENTCOM official X profile, soldiers aboard a US Army AH-64D Longbow Apache attack helicopter were seen to successfully engage and down UAS targets from an AH-64 fitted with an upgraded version of the Hellfire missile.

The third Red Sands Exercise was conducted by US Central Command (CENTCOM) and the Armed Forces of Saudi Arabia at the Red Sands Integrated Experimentation Center. The exercise built on previous iterations and included training, operational demonstrations and the testing of 15 different systems employing various kinetic and non-kinetic techniques to destroy and disable unmanned aerial systems (UAS).

Importantly, conducting the exercise at the Red Sands IEC allowed for the testing of various C-UAS systems under realistic environmental conditions, ensuring the selected systems are effective for deployment by US allies in the Middle East.

Apache helicopters, known for their advanced technology and combat effectiveness, are renowned as a valuable asset in various scenarios. With the increasing prevalence of malicious UAS in recent conflicts in the Middle East and the ongoing war between Ukraine and Russia, the US have included the training of Apache flight crew and equipped the platforms to defeat enemy UAS as part of Red Sands III.

With the conclusion of Red Sands III, CENTCOM has this week began executing its Desert Guardian exercise. According to Chief Technology Officer Schuyler Moore, the exercise will focus “on forcing different [C-UAS] systems to integrate and function together”.

04 Oct 24. Cuashub.com said today that NATO intensifies surveillance following Russian airspace violation. NATO has intensified surveillance over Romanian airspace following the incursion of a Russian drone during an attack on Ukraine.

On September 29, NATO deployed an airborne surveillance aircraft (AWACS) to monitor the situation. The decision was made based on a recommendation from NATO’s Supreme Allied Commander Europe, with the aim of supporting the Alliance’s enhanced presence in the region and tracking Russian military activity.

The surveillance flights will be conducted from NATO bases in Preveza, Greece, and Geilenkirchen, Germany, and will operate solely over NATO territory. According to the press service of NATO’s Joint Air Force Command, these flights are designed to enhance Romania’s ability to monitor and respond to air activity near its borders.

“NATO AWACS flights over Romania support the Alliance’s reinforced presence in the region and monitor Russian military activity at its borders,” the press service said.

The press service emphasised that such activity represents an appropriate and legitimate response to the incursion, noting that the surveillance is “legal, defensive, proportionate and fully transparent.”

This move follows an incident on September 27, when a Russian drone entered Romanian airspace during a Russian strike on Ukraine’s Odesa region. The intrusion triggered warnings for residents in Tulcea and Constanta counties, as officials cautioned them about the risks of falling debris.

Romania has previously seen incursions into its airspace, including an event on September 7, when Russian Shahed drones entered the country’s territory. These incidents have raised concerns about the safety of Romanian border areas as the conflict between Russia and Ukraine continues to spill over into neighbouring regions.

04 Oct 24. Cuashub.com said today that Bosch seeks patent for UAS-based counter-drone system. German industrial giant Robert Bosch has applied for a patent for an innovative UAS-based counter-drone system. The patent outlines an approach to neutralising unauthorised drones by employing electromagnetic jamming signals emitted from defensive drones, a strategy that adds yet another arrow to the counter-UAS quiver.

A new approach to drone defence

Bosch’s system combines mobility and precision by mounting a jamming device on a UAV. This allows the defensive drone to target intruding UAS in mid-air. Unlike traditional counter-drone solutions, which often rely on ground-based signal jammers or larger kinetic drones designed to collide with threats, Bosch’s method enables the defensive drone to match the mobility of the foreign drone.

This flexibility offers a clear advantage over stationary or bulky alternatives, as the jamming UAS can pursue and neutralise threats at any location within its operational range.

How it works

The core of the invention lies in the method by which the defensive UAS approaches and disables a foreign drone. The defence drone is equipped with a jamming device that emits a powerful electromagnetic signal, disrupting the target’s control and communication systems.

The jamming signal is activated when the defensive drone reaches a predefined distance and height relative to the intruding drone. The system’s ability to maintain an optimal position ensures precise jamming, maximising effectiveness while reducing the risk of collateral interference.

The patent further describes a defence system that allows multiple drones to work together, creating a coordinated network of UAS capable of protecting sensitive areas or assets from a wide range of drone threats.

The increasing prevalence of drones in sensitive airspace has led to a surge in development for C-UAS products, driving demand for innovative and reliable solutions. Bosch’s UAS-based jamming system offers yet another approach that can be included in layered defence strategies, combining the portability and flexibility of a UAS with the cost efficiency of electromagnetic jamming. https://cuashub.com/en/content/bosch-seeks-patent-for-uas-based-counter-drone-system/ (Source: https://cuashub.com/)
