24 Apr 26. US ‘punishment’ of NATO allies is realistic in coming weeks; alliance expulsion is unlikely. Earlier on 24 April, Reuters reported, via an unnamed US official, that an internal Pentagon email is circulating options for the US to ‘punish’ NATO allies it perceives have not sufficiently assisted in the Israel-US-Iran war. The email allegedly includes proposals to suspend Spain from NATO and reappraise US diplomatic support for European ‘imperial possessions’, including the UK’s claim on the Falkland Islands. The Trump administration has frequently criticised European NATO allies for failing to assist with operations in the Gulf, and Spain’s Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez has emerged as the most open critic of the war. We continue to assess that Spain is the most exposed NATO member to potential US ‘punishment’ given its stance. However, NATO does not have a formal procedure for expelling members. While expulsion therefore remains unlikely, it is unclear what means the US would potentially leverage in an attempt to force Spain to leave. Other, more symbolic, options such as closing US military facilities in Spain or barring Spanish officers from senior or prestigious NATO positions, remain realistic possibilities. (Source: Sibylline
