14 Sep 11. Afghanistan: OP HERRICK. A Lance Corporal from 1st Bn The Rifles was killed by small arms fire in the village of Haji Khodin Nazar on 14 Sep 11. UK deaths since the start of Operations on 7 Oct 01 thus rose to 381, of whom 337 were killed as a result of hostile action. (MoD, 14 Sep 11.)
From 1 Jan 06 to 31 Aug 11, 1,781 personnel were Wounded in Action and 4,991 were aeromedically evacuated. (DASA, 15 Sep 11.) From 16 to 31 Aug 11 the figures were 23 and 61.
Members of 24 Commando Engineer Regiment have trained a team of Afghan National Army troops to operate heavy construction vehicles. (MoD, 12 Sep 11.)
Royal Marines from 42 Commando, together with Estonian and Afghan soldiers, finally cleared the area around Loy Mandeh Kaley. The area is about to be restored to its “former glory”. (MoD, 13 Sep 11.)
95% of Urgent Operational Requirements exceeded or met the expected delivery date and 42% were achieved below the approved cost. (Written Answer (WA), 14 Sep 11.)
Comment: NATO published (9 Sep 11) an updated list of ISAF troop contributing nations. The total number of troops has only decreased slightly from the list published with DNA 11/33 (29 Aug 11): 130,670 compared with 130,697. El Salvador, with 24 soldiers, has now increased the number of nations by one to 49.

16 Sep 11. Libya: OP ELLAMY. MoD daily briefings, up to and including 16 Sep 11, confirmed continued strike activity by Tornado GR4 and Typhoon aircraft. In addition to the aircraft based in Italy, Tornado GR4 armed with Storm Shadow stand-off missiles flew from RAF Marham and were supported by a TriStar tanker. HMS LIVERPOOL conducted inspections of merchant shipping as necessary and HMS BANGOR continued her mine sweeping duties. (MoD, 12-16 Sep 11.)

Up to 1 Sep 11, UK Forces have employed around 1,100 precision guided munitions, 110 direct fire weapons, 4,100 30mm cannon rounds and 240 4.5 inch naval high explosive or illuminating rounds. (WA, 14 Sep 11.)
Up to 1 Sep 11, NATO coalition aircraft have flown around 8,000 strike sorties of which the UK has flown around 1,500. (WA, 15 Sep 11.)
The Prime Minister, accompanied by the Foreign Secretary, joined President Sarkozy (15 Sep 11) to meet members of the National Transitional Council in Tripoli. The two leaders said that “the NATO commitment to the Libyan people was not over and that protecting civilians was a priority”. (PM Office, 15 Sep 11.)
