05 Dec 10. Afghanistan: OP HERRICK. A Private from 3rd Bn The Parachute Regiment was killed during an action near Lashkar Gah on 5 Dec 10.
UK deaths since the start of Operations on 7 Oct 01 thus rose to 346 of whom 305 were killed as a result of hostile action. (MoD, 5 Dec 10.)
Soldiers from 1st Bn The Royal Irish Regiment assisted in the refurbishment of a derelict school in Kushal Kalay. (MoD, 6 Dec 10.)
Supplies are delivered to UK Forces in Afghanistan by a number of means, including military and contractor convoys. (Ministerial Answer (MA), 6 Dec 10.)
During a visit to Afghanistan, the Prime Minister announced agreement on a partnership covering economic, political and military support. (PM’s office, 7 Dec 10.)
Soldiers from 2nd Royal Tank Regiment have exchanged their Viking vehicles for Warthogs. (MoD, 7 Dec 10.)
The Prime Minister announced £33m for the development of the Afghan National Police in 2010/11 and £135m to double the number of Reaper Remotely Piloted Aircraft. (MoD, 7 Dec 10 – see also Item 2.)
Beyond the end of combat Operations in 2015, the UK will continue to have a Defence relationship with Afghanistan that will include training and mentoring roles. (MA, 7 Dec 10.)
‘Decompression’ is available to all Service personnel returning from Operations in Afghanistan. It is conducted over a period of 36 hours in Cyprus. (MA, 7 Dec 10.)
Soldiers from 1st Bn The Royal Irish Regiment and 5th Bn The Royal Regiment of Scotland assisted in the clearance of insurgents from the Shin Kalay area. (MoD, 8 Dec 10.)
The Afghan National Police in Helmand are being mentored and supported by 5th Bn The Royal Regiment of Scotland. (MoD, 8 Dec 10.)
The Hermes 450 (H450) unmanned air vehicles have provided over 30,000 hours of support to UK Forces. The H450 is supplied by Thales UK and operated by 32 Regiment, Royal Artillery. (MoD, 9 Dec 10.)
The Helmand Police Training Centre marked its first anniversary on 5 Dec 10. A total of 160 junior commanders and 1,593 men have been trained to date. (MoD, 10 Dec 10.)
Comment: In a briefing at RAF Honington (9 Dec 10), the first contingent of Tongan troops met the UK media. 55 troops are about to be under command of the RAF Force Protection Wing at Camp Bastion. 09 Dec 10. European Defence Ministers have agreed that the Agency’s activities on Pooling and Sharing of national military capabilities should be enhanced. In addition to successful existing projects – such as improving helicopters availability, air transport, third party logistics support and airworthiness – more pooling and sharing opportunities exist in areas like satellite communications, medical support and naval logistics. In many cases pooling and sharing also offers opportunities for civil-military dual-use.
