14 Aug 10. Afghanistan: OP HERRICK. UK deaths since the start of Operations on 7 Oct 01 have risen to 331, of whom 291 were killed as a result of hostile action. As confirmed by the MoD (14 Aug 10), the recent fatalities are:-
* A Lieutenant from 1st Bn The Mercian Regiment died on 11 Aug 10 due to wounds sustained in an explosion in the Nahr-e Saraj District on 13 Jul 10.
* A soldier from the Gurkha Reinforcement Company, 1st Bn The Mercian Regiment, died on 12 Aug 10 due to injuries sustained in a helicopter incident in the Nahr-e Saraj District on 10 Aug 10.
* A soldier from 21 Engineer Regiment was killed by small arms fire in the Sangin District on 13 Aug 10.
* A soldier from the Queen’s Gurkha Engineers was killed by small arms fire in the Nad-e Ali Districton 13 Aug 10.
The Afghan flag was raised over Sayedabad, the focus of OP TOR SHEZADA, which is now under Afghan/ISAF control. (MoD, 10 Aug 10.)
Visiting Afghanistan, the Defence Secretary announced that two additional Tornado aircraft were to arrive at Kandahar Airfield on 12 Aug 10. The aircraft are to join the eight Tornado GR4 already deployed and will remain for three months. (MoD, 11 Aug 10.)
Comment: The Troop Contributing Nations to ISAF, as at 6 Aug 10, are listed below. Apart from minor adjustments, Malaysia is listed for the first time and the reduction in The Netherlands’ contribution (from 1,955 to 380) reflects the Country’s withdrawal.
