16 May 07. Iraq: OP TELIC. From 1 Jan 06 to 30 Apr 07, 175 personnel were categorised as Wounded in Action and 894 were aeromedically evacuated from Iraq. (MoD, 16 May 07.) Between 16 and 30 Apr 07 the figures were 11 and 28.
“There are more Gunners in Iraq (and to a lesser extent Afghanistan) operating in the Infantry and mentoring roles than there are manning our guns….”. (RA Journal, Spring 2007.) A major security Operation was launched in Basrah City on 13 May 07. (MoD, 14 May 07.) More than 143,000 Iraqi Armed Forces have been trained and equipped by the Multinational Forces. (Ministerial Answer (MA), 14 May 07.) The UK continues “to press by all diplomatic means the Government of Iran to return the boats and equipment seized illegally in both 2004 and 2007”. (MA, 14 May 07.) An incremental return to full boarding Operations, by the Royal Navy, started on 24 Apr 07. The process is not yet complete. (MA, 15 May 07.)
The Chief of the General Staff decided that HRH Prince Henry of Wales “should not currently deploy to Iraq”. (MoD, 16 May 07.) [CGS thus reversed his earlier decision (30 Apr 07) that HRH would deploy with his Troop.]
Commander, 19 Light Brigade organised a media event at the Provincial Joint Co-ordination Centre in Basrah City. The Brigade is nearing the end of its tour on OP TELIC 9. (MoD, 17 May 07.) A Tornado GR4 from 12 Squadron RAF assisted in the rescue of an Iraqi Police Commander who had been ambushed. (MoD, 17 May 07.)
The Prime Minister and the Chief of the Defence Staff both visited Iraq, the former for one day on 19 May 07. (MoD, 18 May 07 & No 10, 19 May 07.)
Comment: Reuters reported (16 May 07) that the Iraqi Foreign Minister had rejected a Pakistani proposal for a Muslim peacekeeping force to be sent to Iraq. 16 May 07. Afghanistan: OP HERRICK. From 1 Jan 06 to 30 Apr 07, 136 personnel were categorised as Wounded in Action and 384 were aeromedically evacuated from Afghanistan. (MoD, 16 May 07.) Between 16 and 30 Apr 07 the figures
were four and 17. Some 2,000 Afghan, Danish and UK troops had driven the Taliban towards Gereshk in the East of Helmand Province, as part of OP ACHILLES. (MoD, 14 May 07.) “Our response [to attacks on British bases] remains to keep the Taliban on the back foot….and allow reconstruction and development.” (MA, 16 May 07.) British troops from the Regional Command South Reserve Battle Group are now ready to provide assistance anywhere in Southern Afghanistan. (ISAF, 17 May 07.)

17 May 07. Type 45 Destroyers: No Export Prospects. The Armed Forces’ Minister said (17 May 07) that the MoD had received “no formal expressions of interest regarding the purchase of Type 45 destroyers” although information about the Type had been provided to other Governments when requested.
Comment: The Minister had earlier (14 May 07) confirmed that negotiations on the fourth, fifth and sixth Type 45 were being concluded.
