31 Aug 06. The U.S Army conducted a successful intercept test flight of the PATRIOT Advanced Capability-3 (PAC-3) missile system at White Sands Missile Range, NM, today at 8:30 a.m., Mountain Daylight Time. The test involved an engagement using two PAC-3 missiles against a short-range, full-body TBM target. Preliminary test data indicates a successful intercept of the target and mission objectives were achieved. The test demonstrated the system’s capability to detect, track, engage and intercept a short-range TBM target. The target for the mission was a PATRIOT-as-a-Target (PAAT), a PATRIOT legacy missile modified to represent a short-range TBM target. Test objectives of this mission included:; demonstrating system capability to engage a TBM target; demonstrating system capability to intercept and kill a TBM target; verifying proper operation and interaction of the Information Coordination Central and the Fire Units in a battalion during the engagement of a TBM under track from multiple Fire Units; collecting data for missile reliability scoring and PAC-3 Reliability, Availability and Maintainability (RAM) assessment; demonstrating proper post-intercept processing within the battalion for a TBM target. Soldiers of the 2-43rd Air Defense Artillery, Fort Bliss, TX, participated in today’s test. The PAC-3 system successfully completed operational testing and began fielding in 2002. It was first used in combat during Operation Iraqi Freedom in 2003.

25 Aug 06. ITT Corporation has successfully completed production testing of the first S3D radar system upgrade for Forsvarets Materielverk (FMV) of Sweden. This upgrade delivers new technology for the processor, transmitter, antenna, displays and built-in test, resulting in improved reliability, availability, and maintainability that extends the life of the S3D Radar an additional 15 years. Additional upgrades, currently in process, will provide added capability for weather detection processing. Work is being performed by ITT Electronic Systems Division, Radar Systems – Gilfillan. The S3D radar system is a 3-dimensional radar system, operating at S-band that automatically detects airborne targets and is a fundamental component of the Swedish Air Defense infrastructure.

ICS Sensor Processing – part of Radstone Embedded Computing announced the ICS-8500, the first PMC to become available that delivers the leading edge performance of FPDP II – with its transfer rate of 400 MBytes/second, compared with 160 MBytes/second for FPDP – in a rugged environment. The ICS-8500, which can be configured as either a transmitter or a receiver, also features 8 Mbytes of swing buffer memory, setting it apart from products that provide only limited FIFO capability. Available in convection- and conduction-cooled versions, the ICS-8500 offers similar functionality to the popular ICS-500-R and ICS-500-T PMC products, but is configurable under software control as either a receiver or transmitter. The 400 MBytes/second FPDP II interface is provided via the P4 connector: when the ICS-8500 is communicating with a non-FPDP II device, it automatically reverts to ANSI/VITA 17 FPDP operation at 160 MBytes/second. An 8 MByte swing buffer is provided, as is a PCI 2.2 (64/66) PCI interface. In transmit mode, the board provides an FPDP/TM interface. In addition to a continuous data transmit capability, a Loop mode of operation is available, in which a fixed length of data equal to the programmed buffer length is written to both banks of the swing buffer. When triggered, this data is repetitively generated and transmitted by the FPDP output interface.
