Timoney is to put increased focus on to its Engineering Consultancy Business Unit and expects its revenues in this area to more than double over the next three years, the company has announced at IDEX 2019. Due to increased customer demand the company is offering stand-alone Engineering Services and Consultancy to customers requiring the skills involved in through life support, fleet maintenance, MRO and vehicle upgrade programmes as well as to its existing customers engaged in new vehicle development.
The company has a long legacy of supporting Wheeled Vehicle OEM’s with new vehicle developments by providing Engineering and Design Services, predominantly for automotive systems, dynamic performance, mobility and drivetrain solutions. Timoney’s traditional business model based around a hybrid mix of IP Licensing, Engineering Services and long term supply of Driveline and Suspension Systems has been synonymous with its successes with vehicle programmes supporting OEM customers in USA, Europe, Africa, Asia and Australia.
CEO Shane O’Neill said “it has become increasingly apparent that our customers recognise that our automotive engineering skills are as relevant to programmes involving in-service vehicles and upgrades as they are during the new vehicle development cycle. Providing consultancy services in this way does represent a change in mind-set for us as a business but it is clear that our involvement in so many pioneering programmes and our 50 years’ experience developing new vehicles puts us in a unique position to be able to address this market. We continue to participate in new vehicle development programmes but we are even approaching these differently from a commercial perspective based on the needs of our customers”.
Timoney’s automotive engineering and design offering encompasses driveline, suspension, power-pack, chassis and structures in addition to other automotive systems. As well as 3D solid modelling and CAD design the company can provide Dynamic Analysis and FEA services supported by first principle system calculations and performance predictions. Timoney also has in-house facilities for bench testing and proof of concept assembly.
O’Neill went on to say “we are offering these services across several sectors and we are already seeing successes in the construction market as well as defence. We now have a greater emphasis on helping our customers grow their business through technical participation in the full vehicle lifecycle from cradle to grave. Participation with vehicles where we had no role in the original design represents the most significant change but we believe that this also represents one of our greatest growth opportunities. First class engineering and being quicker to execute than competing alternatives continue to be important USP’s for us and are embedded in our culture”.

15 Feb 19. Timoney’s new Independent Suspension Combo, designed to offer the best of all worlds, is launched at IDEX 2019. The system is a fusion of Timoney’s renowned and widely adopted Independent Suspension (IS) and rugged, volume produced drive systems, all developed for the harshest regimes with a unique supply model that offers maximum mobility at lowest cost.
The system addresses 4×4, 6×6 and 8×8 requirements with several axle ratings up to 16,000kg depending on activity and operational requirements. The concept involves separate qualified supply channels for the suspension system and primary drive solutions which can be procured in component form as opposed to fully assembled drive axles. As well as system cost benefits, the solution also provides significant advantages for shipping and logistics. Timoney will roll out the Combo approach for a range of other Axle ratings in the future.

14 Feb 19. Force Protection is our Mission: Rheinmetall at IDEX 2019. IDEX 2019 takes place from 17 to 21 February in Abu Dhabi. True to the motto “Force Protection is our Mission”, Rheinmetall will be on hand with a representative selection of products from its extensive portfolio.
The Group is allocating considerable space to its force protection solutions, which range from hard ballistic inserts for bullet-resistant vests to state-of-the-art standoff active protection systems for armoured vehicles.
For the first time ever, Rheinmetall is showcasing its new Hybrid Protection Module. Combining active and passive protection technology, it can be retrofitted into vehicles or deployed in standalone mode. Furthermore, Rheinmetall is presenting two variants of its tried-and-tested Multi Ammunition Softkill System (MASS) decoy launcher system: MASS_OCR with Offboard Corner Reflector and the standalone MASS_ISS with Integrated Sensor Suite, intended for units lacking an organic reconnaissance system for countering e.g. laser and radar threats.

13 Feb 19. Polaris® Government and Defense, a division of United States-based Polaris Industries Inc. (NYSE: PII) will showcase its MRZR® X multi-mode vehicle platform internationally at IDEX in Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates February 17-21.
“Autonomous systems are disrupting the status quo and shaping the way we will do battle in the future. The MRZR X is a transformative vehicle because it is optionally manned and can fulfill its current mission to move at the speed of maneuver with a driver or act as a robotic mule to carry mission equipment and soldiers’ loads,” said Jed Leonard, vice president, Polaris Government and Defense. “This ability to both drive the vehicle and still have dismounted control of a robotic platform provides great mission capability and operation flexibility.”
The MRZR X is designed for future flexibility, with Modular Robotic Applique Kits (M-RAKs) from Applied Research Associates Inc (ARA). ARA has been producing M-RAKs for more than 20 years, with a specialty in off-road robotics, further enhanced by the acquisition of Neya Systems. The advanced MRZR X fully integrates the autonomy systems and optimally places the sensors to safeguard the technology while keeping the physical and software architecture open for future technology upgrades. The vehicle’s hybrid drivetrain is powerful and reliable, allowing for export power, longer missions, high speeds and silent drive when needed – all on the very familiar, sustainable and intuitive MRZR platform.
The MRZR X is currently undergoing field trials in a squad integration evaluation with the U.S. Army as part of the Squad Multipurpose Equipment Transport (SMET) program. The U.K. Ministry of Defence also included the vehicle in its December Army Warfare Experiment (AWE), further proving its viability as a support vehicle.
Polaris Government and Defense will also be displaying the DAGOR® and MRZR Diesel vehicle platforms. The Polaris family of vehicles helps address the continued need within light infantry and special operations forces for ultra-light, off-road mobility: from the single passenger MV850 all-terrain vehicle, to the two and four passenger MRZR lightweight tactical all-terrain vehicle, up to the DAGOR ultra-light vehicle, which can carry up to nine warfighters and their gear, for a total payload of up to 4,000 pounds (1,814 kilograms). These vehicles meet challenging sets of requirements to be extremely off-road capable at full payload while maintaining ease of transportability with tactical air assets.
Polaris vehicles also use readily available commercial off-the-shelf (COTS) driveline, controls and components to streamline mechanic and operator training, and for simplified operation, maintenance and sustainment in support of combat operations.

12 Feb 19. Patria showcases its armoured wheeled vehicles and selected intelligence, surveillance and data link products at IDEX 2019. Patria attends IDEX 2019 event in February 17-21, in Abu Dhabi, UAE featuring its latest technology at Patria’s stand 10 – B10/C09. Patria will showcase several products:
- Patria AMV product family combines high payload capacity with the latest technology. These features enable simultaneous integration of a high level of protection with heavy weapon systems without compromising mobility of the vehicle.
- Patria Nemo, which is a turreted, remote-controlled 120mm mortar system. It is an indirect fire support system, but due to its direct fire capability, it can also be used for self-defence. It can also fire Multiple Rounds Simultaneous Impact (MRSI) fire missions where up to 5 grenades are hitting the target simultaneously. The light and compact turret is easily installable on light, tracked chassis or wheeled armoured vehicles in the 6×6/8×8 class.
- CANDL, which is a compact data link for air-to-air and air-to-ground applications requiring high reliability, dynamic networking with several members and long communication ranges, for example Unmanned Aerial Systems (UAS), Manned-Unmanned Teaming (MUMT) operations, Intra-Flight Data Links (IFDL) and Live Virtual Constructive training (LVC) systems.
- ARIS, which is a remote operable Electronic Intelligence (ELINT) system used to intercept, record and analyze radar signals. With ARIS you can master strategic ELINT in today’s complex signal environment and make fast updates to ELINT databases.
- ARIS-E, which is a new Electronic Support Measures (ESM) product building on ARIS. It provides automatic identification, real-time geolocation and tracking of radars on the battlefield. ARIS and ARIS-E together deliver comprehensive tools for strategic and tactical ELINT/ESM for various needs.

Patria AMVXP vehicle offers Extra Payload, Extra Performance and Extra Protection
At IDEX 2019 Patria will showcase Patria AMV 8×8 with Patria Nemo 120mm mortar system turret equipped with 120 mm smoothbore mortar and Fire Management System. In addition to this, also Patria AMVXP armoured wheeled vehicle integrated with Leonardo HITFACT I turret will be featured. The weapon system consists of 120mm smoothbore L 45 caliber low-recoil cannon capable of firing all NATO 120mm standard ammunitions and a 7,62mm Coaxial Machine Gun. The Fire Control System includes commander’s independent observation day/thermal sight and gunners primary stabilized day/thermal sight with a full hunter-killer capability. The weapon system is completed with a 7,62mm pintle mount machine-gun operated by the vehicle commander and a 12,7mm HMG operated by the loader. Patria AMVXP provides further strength to the company’s product range. The abbreviation XP stands for Extra Payload, Extra Performance and Extra Protection.

Patria’s new sensor product family to defeat agile threats
Today’s defence forces are facing new threats from capable adversaries. Emergence of drones and stealth technology requires new methods for air surveillance. Capable adversaries are having also very advanced weapon systems with software defined radar sensors that can easily change their parameters. Coping with these new agile threats requires new tools for electronic intelligence (ELINT) to provide better strategic analysis of radars and their tactics as well as faster analysis cycle and updates for emitter databases.
To help customers in this prevailing threat scenario, Patria has rolled out a new sensor product family consisting of passive RF sensors detecting signals in radio frequency spectrum (RF). The sensor product family includes ARIS Electronic Intelligence (ELINT) and ARIS-E Electronic Support Measures (ESM) systems that are used for radar signal analysis and geolocation as well as a passive radar MUSCL that is used for covert air surveillance.
ARIS – Advanced Real-time Intelligence System
ARIS is an Electronic Intelligence (ELINT) system used to intercept, record and analyze radar signals. ARIS operator analyses signal parameters and based on that determines characteristics of unknown radars. ARIS is remote operable, which means that operators can use several deployed ARIS systems from a centralized operator center through network connection. ARIS has superb measurement accuracy and its user interface and tools are very intuitive and easy to use which makes operators very productive. Results of the analysis are exported to emitter database for later identification. ARIS can be delivered in four different levels of system integration ranging from ELINT analysis application for analysing recorded signals to fully integrated self-contained ELINT capability.
ARIS-E is a new Electronic Support Measures (ESM) product building on ARIS. ARIS-E system provides automatic identification, real-time geolocation and tracking of radars on the battlefield (i.e. forms tactical electronic situational awareness). ARIS-E is based on a modular architecture and compact size enabling configurations for naval and land based operations. ARIS and ARIS-E together deliver comprehensive tools for strategic and tactical radar ELINT/ESM for various needs.
MUSCL – Multistatic Coherent Location (passive radar)
MUSCL is a passive radar system. The system uses signals from existing radio and TV broadcast networks for target detection and tracking. Therefore, MUSCL does not need to produce own radar signals, which makes it practically invisible for adversaries as well as enabling safe deployments and use in urban areas. Due to physical characteristics of radio/TV signals and multistatic operation (i.e. transmitter and receiver at different locations), the system has capabilities to detect stealth and low flying targets. MUSCL has various applications such as military air surveillance, border control, critical infrastructure protection and drone detection.
CANDL – Compact Airborne Networking Data Link
In addition to new sensor family, Patria has developed the Compact Airborne Networking Data Link (CANDL) to provide the best communication performance on the market, in a very compact size.
CANDL is a data link system for networking applications such as Unmanned Aerial Systems (UAS), Manned-Unmanned Teaming (MUMT), Intra-Flight Data Link (IFDL) and Live Virtual Constructive training (LVC). It provides reliable long-range communication between up to 24 members in the same network. Network configuration is automatic allowing dynamic joining/leaving of new members in the network as well as extending range to beyond line of sight by relaying data. Data communication is encrypted, and it is possible to use an optional internal COMSEC module as well. CANDL has full Internet Protocol compatibility, therefore integration with any modern platforms is easy and there are no limitations for transmitted date types (e.g.; C2, voice, HD video and DIS/HLA are supported).
14 Feb 19. Jankel achieves ‘production ready’ status from its Middle Eastern production facility of their latest generation HUNTER Tactical Intervention Vehicle (TIV). World-class specialist in design and production of high-specification armoured vehicles and survivability systems, Jankel, has announced the achievement of ‘production ready’ status for their latest generation HUNTER Tactical Intervention Vehicle (TIV) in preparation for the imminent manufacture of another major order from an undisclosed customer in the Asia Pacific region. The vehicles will be built at JLVM, Jankel’s Jordanian facility, a Joint Venture with KADDB. This announcement coincides with IDEX 2019 taking place 17-21 February at the Abu Dhabi National Exhibition Centre (ADNEC), where Jankel is exhibiting on stand number 05-C09.
Jankel’s focus for IDEX will be further sales of their Counter Terror and Special Forces vehicles to complement their numerous vehicle fleets already in service in the Middle East. Jankel will also be promoting their survivability systems, including their range of BLASTech mitigation seats. This latest order for the HUNTER TIV has been re-engineered to have increased internal and stowage capacity. The vehicle has also received automotive improvements to meet the exact specifications demanded by the customer, delivering versatility, maneuverability and protection for Internal Security missions.
Jankel has enjoyed considerable success in the Middle and Far Eastern regions in recent years. The establishment of the JLVM Joint Venture in Jordan has enabled regional manufacture of vehicles to meet the demanding environmental and capability requirements of this wider geographical area. To date, Jankel has over 350 vehicles in service across 11 countries in the Middle East and neighbouring regions, as well as an established and comprehensive support services network that expands across 14 different regional sites, ensuring the customer can always maximise the capability on offer.

12 Feb 19. Rubber Tracks By Soucy. Soucy Defence Division will exhibit their Composite Rubber Track (CRT) at the Canadian Pavilion during IDEX 2019. These tracks are operationally proven systems serving in conflict theatres such as Iraq and Afghanistan on Canada’s M113, the UK’s BVS10 (Viking) & Norway’s CV90 ve-hicles.
The system has undergone several trials with one of the newest CRT trial being conducted under a joint programme with BAE Systems on a Warrior Infantry Fighting Vehicle (IFV) at the UKs Armoured Trials & Development Unit where its advantages surpassed the expected capabilities. The 5,000km, 3-month trial was conducted to strict mission profile parameters directed by the UK MOD, ensuring the CRT was trialled in a realistic operational environment. The 5,000 km durability was fulfilled with an additional 3,000 km extrapolated by the engineering teams.
CRT is integrated onto several different Armoured Vehicles (AV) across different vehicle weight categories worldwide including, M113 variants, Bronco, CV90 and BORSUK proving the diversity of CRT as a system.
With CRT being on average 50% lighter than conventional Steel Track (ST) and able to operate in temperatures up to 50 degrees Celsius, it is thought that more and more middle east nations will seek to integrate CRT onto their platforms such as BMP3, M109 and the MCV-80 Desert Warrior. 11 Feb 19. Ukraine Armor looks to MENA region for exports. The Ukrainian Armor company will display its Varta 4×4 APCs at IDEX 2019 as it tries to earn its place on international markets after securing its first export customer for the Varta. The company will deliver a batch of Varta 4×4 APCs to Nigeria under the first export contract for this platform, confirmed Aleksandr Kuzma, CEO of the Ukrainian Armor company. The shipment of an unspecified number of vehicles is to be made from the port of Odessa, Ukraine.
According to Kuzma, the company is already negotiating another export agreement, with a possible delivery of Varta 4×4 APCs to Saudi Arabia.
During IDEX 2019 the company will showcase its newest version of the Varta 4×4 APC along with other products, including the Novator 4×4 rapid intervention vehicle, mortars and various types of ammunition.
The vehicles destine for Nigeria are likely to be used in patrol, troop transport and combat roles, supporting Nigerian forces in their struggle against the Boko Haram and other Islamic militant organisations.
Varta 4×4 APC features a commander and driver along with capacity for eight dismounts and provides a STANAG 4569 level 2 protection against 7.62mm firearms.
The Ukrainian Armor started to pursue export opportunities for its Varta 4×4 family of vehicles, which also include a command post or medical evacuation variant, after having transferred a number of platforms to the Ukrainian Armed Forces, with latest deliveries taking place in late 2018.
The company appears to perceive MENA region as one of the most promising markets that offers numerous export possibilities due to a number of nations with urgent modernisation requirements, but limited investment budgets. These potential buyers are therefore ideally suited to acquire tested and proven but affordable wheeled platforms for combat operations
According to the manufacturer, the Varta 4×4 APC is built on a 4×4 two-axle truck base. The vehicle uses a V-shaped hull structure to accommodate anti-mine seats, giving crew members protection to withstand the detonation of charges up to 6kg of TNT. A 6-cylinder, V-type, turbocharged, 270-300hp diesel engine allows the vehicle to achieve a maximum road speed of 120 km/h and maximum range of 1250 km.

system designed to offer superior blast protection. The modular Troops Roll-over Protection System (ROPS) evolved from our successful welded ROPS system which has greatly improved troop safety during transportation on flatbed vehicles. This improved modularity enables users to convert any flatbed vehicle into a troop-carrying role with ease, greatly improving logistics and stowage.

11 Feb 19. Alcon increase their global defence vehicle footprint with 8 different Alcon-equipped vehicles on show at IDEX. Internationally acclaimed high-performance brake system design, development and manufacturing company, Alcon Components Ltd, will be attending the IDEX exhibition taking place in Abu Dhabi, 17-21 February 2018. Of particular note, you can see Alcon brake products fitted to 8 different vehicles on display at the show, including vehicles from world-class OEM’s based in UAE, Finland, North America, UK and Turkey. Of particular note are the Patria AMV 8×8 and 6×6 vehicles exhibited at IDEX that both have Alcon brakes fitted as standard. At IDEX, Alcon will have representatives from their sales team in attendance who will be happy to arrange meetings, on request.
Alcon has over 25 years of experience in engineering brakes and clutches for specialist vehicles; from F1, World Rally and prestige performance cars to 30T-plus military armoured vehicles. This places them at the forefront of developing and delivering high performance braking solutions for sectors where only the absolute best can be accepted. Alcon’s off the shelf brake upgrade kits allow both OEM’s and vehicle modification companies to overcome the challenges posed by up-armouring vehicles for defence, security and specialist purposes. The kits are compatible with stock OEM actuation, so are easy to fit but have been fully “ruggedised” to ensure extreme levels robustness and performance balanced with the requirement to keep weight to a minimum.
If a kit is not available off the shelf, Alcon have a bespoke design service that can deliver a similar offering for any platform of the customer’s choice including vehicles all the way up to 30+ tonne heavy armoured variants. This bespoke engineering offering, from order to production, can provide tailored, performance braking systems to the customers’ exact requirements within an exceedingly short time-frame.
Alcon’s discretion, performance and reliability have led to the company becoming the braking system provider of choice for defence, special-forces, security and specialist sector armoured SUV users worldwide.
