16 Jan 12. Late November 2011, Renault Trucks Defense (RTD) won the invitation for bids from SEA (Service des Essences des Armées – French Armed Forces Fuel Service) for the supply of an air-transportable multipurpose tactical tanker-truck (“CCPTA”). RTD’s winning proposal
was the Sherpa Medium truck. The order comprises a firm batch for 30 vehicles and a conditional batch for 20 more. A qualification phase will be conducted in 2012 and the customer will take delivery of the first trucks in 2013. Thanks to their mobility, the Sherpa Medium 6×6 refuelling trucks, with their tank capacity of 5 m3, will be able to refuel all types of aircraft – including unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) – in rough terrain. Moreover, the technical capacities of the vehicle make it highly versatile and capable of adapting to the operational situation. This version of the Sherpa Medium can be transported on board C-130 and A400M aircraft, and can itself carry a total load of up to 12 tonnes. The Sherpa Medium is already in service with the French Army, and is used as the carrier platform for the Caesar® artillery system, among other missions.

10 Jan 12. New LIBRIS offers bridging for light forces. Deschamps Mat Systems Inc (DMS Inc) has completed development of its new Light Integrated Bridging System (LIBRIS). LIBRIS, described by DMS Inc as “a bridge in a box” and a “raft in two boxes”, is a floating bridge configuration that can be rapidly deployed to cross 10 m gaps. This span was settled on after a NATO study concluded 90 per cent of gaps encountered in theatre are less than 10 m wide. (Source: Jane’s, IDR)

Millbrook, based in Bedfordshire, UK, makes a significant contribution to the quality and performance of military vehicles worldwide. Its specialist expertise is focussed in two distinct areas: test programmes to help armed services and their suppliers ensure that their vehicles and systems work as the specification requires; and design and build work to upgrade new or existing vehicles, evaluate vehicle capability and investigate in-service failures. Complementing these is driver and service training and a hospitality business that allows customers to use selected areas of Millbrook’s remarkable facilities for demonstrations and exhibitions.
