RENK Group AG, a leading supplier of military and civilian propulsion solutions and IDV, a company of Iveco Group N.V. specialized in defense and civil protection vehicles, have signed a cooperation agreement aimed at evaluating the potential of RENK and IDV drive technologies for future combat platforms.
This cooperation agreement is an important step enabling both parties to actively contribute to accelerating the tracked vehicle programs for their customers.
It also addresses the need to strengthen the European supply chain and increase production capacity.
The aim of the agreement is to share the know-how and experience of both parties in the development and manufacturing of powertrain solutions, technologies and equipment.

01 Aug 24. Leonardo expects creation of joint venture with Rheinmetall by end of September. The Leonardo-Rheinmetall joint venture will develop and produce a new tank based on Rheinmetall’s KF51 Panther MBT and a new IFV based on the German company’s KF41 Lynx. Leonardo expects the creation of its land defence systems joint venture with Rheinmetall by the end of September, the Italian company’s CEO and managing director, Roberto Cingolani, said during a virtual second quarter/first half of 2024 financial results presentation on 30 July. The statement came two weeks after the company’s co-general manager, Lorenzo Mariani, said the joint venture agreement contract could be signed by the end of 2024. Cingolani noted that a 3 July memorandum of understanding (MOU) was signed by Leonardo and Rheinmetall to form a 50:50 joint venture to be the lead integrator and prime contractor for the development and production of next-generation land vehicles meeting the requirements of the Italian Army. 30 Jul 24. M1A1s shelved as Army prepares for new Abrams SEPv3.
Land. Australia’s M1A1 Abrams have officially been retired, with the last main battle tank rolling out of Gallipoli Barracks in Brisbane.
The change continues the Australian Army’s implementation of the Defence Strategic Review (DSR) and National Defence Strategy (NDS). Under the DSR and NDS, tank capability will be consolidated in Townsville. The new Abrams M1A2 SEPv3 main battle tanks will be introduced into the School of Armour and 2nd Cavalry Regiment later this year.
It also marks the end of an era for 7th Brigade unit 2nd/14th Light Horse Regiment (QMI) (2/14 (QMI)) which has operated with the vehicles since 2017, when C Squadron became a tank unit under Plan Beersheba.
2/14 LHR (QMI) Commanding Officer Lieutenant Colonel Tim Hurley said the move would ultimately be a positive for the unit and Army as a whole.
“While as a unit commander I would love to have a tank squadron at my fingertips, it makes absolute sense to consolidate Army’s tank capability,” he said.
“It allows Army to become a focused force, and it significantly reduces the sustainment overheads for the main battle tank capability.
“Becoming Army’s only pure cavalry regiment will give our unit great role clarity, in addition to some depth in both people and equipment.”
LTCOL Hurley acknowledged the impact of the DSR and NDS implementation on soldiers who would have to transition skill sets or move.
He said having an honest conversation with them was key to them being prepared for the next challenge.
“I believe clear and rational communication removes at least some of the friction inherent in organisational change,” he said.
“I think the vast majority of our tank crews are keen to get their hands on the best tank on the planet – the M1A2 SEPv3 – and as such will happily move to Townsville or Puckapunyal to keep doing what they love.
“Centralising in Townsville will also give the tank fraternity some critical mass, which will afford them more depth in terms of experience, instructors, maintainers and commanders.”
In addition, representatives of Ukraine have previously encouraged transfer of Australia’s M1A1 Abrams tanks to assist the war-torn country in its fight against Russia.
“The defence industry packages (from Australia) have been very good to be frank. The systems which are provided on the drones and anti-drone equipment, they’ve been very useful and more Bushmasters would be great,” ambassador of Ukraine to Australia Vasyl Myroshnychenko said in Canberra earlier this month.
“I think even the M-113s (fully tracked armoured personnel carriers), you know there were 56 of those which were supplied previously and there are more that Australia has. We’ve been are forming new brigades, and these new brigades need to have equipment out there, and whatever is being phased out as a surplus in defence, we are ready to take it right.
“If there are any ASLAVS (Australian light armoured vehicles) which you don’t need any more, they are still good and they could be used in Ukraine. We’ll welcome that, right.
“We have previously been in discussions about M1 Abrams tanks if they could be supplied. So this is all kind of part of the discussions but it’s still up to the government to decide what they can supply at any stage.
“It’s all coordinating with other countries which have supported us and we are grateful for anything we get. At the end of the day, it’s a gift and we are grateful that Australia is standing there with us.”
Australian Defence Force tank commander Corporal Isaiah Emnace, who has been working with M1A1s since C Squadron was raised, said it was a sentimental moment watching the last one leave the unit, but viewed it positively.
“It was a bit of a bittersweet moment because obviously, in order to get new equipment, the older stuff has to go first,” he said.
“I’ve been operating these vehicles for a while now and you experience a lot with them out field; but watching them go, it’s all of the good times that I’ve had with them that come to mind.
“Being in the back of them, shooting with them, commanding in them and being part of a really close team – those are all great memories.”
CPL Emnace said he was ready for the next challenge though and was looking forward to training with the new main battle tanks.
“First and foremost, we’re soldiers, so we’re working on those skills at the moment because it’s important to be capable as a soldier on the ground,” he said.
“Then we’ll start looking at the theory side of understanding the new tank and adapting to the differences, so when we get them we can hit the ground running.”
Commander of 7th Brigade Brigadier Giles Cornelia said it was a significant moment for the brigade and 2/14 LHR (QMI).
“I am very proud of the sterling service of C Squadron as a tank squadron and am looking forward to the new chapter for this historic and exceptional unit,” he said.
“We are working quickly and effectively to change our force structure and play our part in the focused force as the ready brigade, and 2/14 LHR (QMI) are central to this.” (Source: Defence Connect)

Indra has developed the Maestre mission system to be integrated into the Spanish Army’s 8×8 Dragon armored wheeled vehicles and tracked support vehicles (VACs). The company, a European leader in the development of these systems, is now launching an advanced laboratory that replicates the vehicle and an emulation operating environment to work on the mission systems that will be used by these state-of-the-art armored vehicles.
The new laboratory will facilitate not only the development and evolution of the software of these systems, but also training, 4.0 maintenance and tests to study how the vehicle behaves in different configurations, as well as incorporating new sensors and the analysis of their interoperability with other systems. It has working positions that allow to manage the mission system as the driver, vehicle commander, gunner and embarked platoon would do. These positions have been designed so they can also be installed in transportable containers or shelters, so that they can be deployed in the units determined by the Army.

The investment made by Indra in this laboratory will allow for the 8×8 Dragon and VAC Maestre system to be constantly updated throughout its life cycle. It also provides a system and operating familiarization environment prior to training on the simulators and the vehicles themselves.

Maestre, a system tailor-made for the Spanish Army
Indra’s Maestre system controls the weapons, warning, self-protection, situational awareness, communications and navigation systems, as well as the battlefield management system (BMS) and, broadly speaking, all subsystems carried by the 8×8 and the tracked support vehicle (CSV). It is the brain that processes all the information collected and presents it in an integrated picture to the crew so that they can make decisions quickly and react to any situation. It is the key element for vehicle safety, survivability, fire effectiveness and collaborative combat capability.
The Spanish Army, with the collaboration of Indra, has defined and developed Maestre to cover the needs of the General Staff in the VCR 8X8 Dragon and the Tracked Support Vehicle (VAC), keeping Spain at the forefront. The participation of the Spanish Army in its development has been key to differentiate it and to ensure that Maestre is 100% designed by and for the operational needs of the Spanish Army.
The 8×8 mission system is one of the key pieces for the digitalization of the Army, which will facilitate the incorporation of ground platforms in the future Digital Combat Brigade and its integration in the combat cloud scenarios and the future Spanish Army Logistics Base (BLET).
Indra is not only implementing this technology in the new generation of Spanish armored vehicles, but has also taken on a key role in European R&D projects such as Famous I and II, Commands and MARTE, which are working on the next generation of such systems.

29 Jul 24. Ukraine Develops Advanced Shield for US-Donated Bradley Vehicles. Ukraine’s Metinvest Group has successfully completed testing on a new sliding shield designed to protect US-donated Bradley infantry fighting vehicles from Russian drone strikes. The innovation, part of the Steel Front initiative, marks a significant step in bolstering the defense of Ukrainian forces on the front lines.
The newly tested sliding screens for M2 Bradleys were announced by Metinvest’s Chief Operating Officer, Oleksandr Myronenko. He confirmed that the shields are now moving into mass production. This development follows the company’s prior success in creating protective cages for M1 Abrams tanks and other military hardware used by the Armed Forces of Ukraine. The Steel Front initiative, led by Ukrainian steel magnate Rinat Akhmetov, aims to enhance the survivability of Ukrainian military equipment against increasing threats from Russian explosive drones.
Myronenko highlighted the complexity of the new design, which required a special mobile structure allowing the screen to slide from the top to the side of the vehicle, adapting to different combat situations. This adaptability is crucial as drones, particularly first-person view (FPV) drones, pose a significant threat to armored vehicles. These drones can immobilize tanks, making them vulnerable to follow-up attacks.
The protective screens, costing approximately $2m each, are set to be fitted onto Bradleys operating in eastern Ukraine. The Metinvest Group’s innovations have already proven effective in combat, providing enhanced protection for both crews and vehicles. Myronenko noted that the M1 Abrams tanks, equipped with the steel cages, have performed well in combat scenarios.
With the US having provided Ukraine with 31 Abrams tanks and over 300 Bradleys, these protective measures are critical. The Bradleys, currently deployed with the 47th Mechanized Brigade in Donetsk Oblast, have demonstrated their effectiveness in combat and have been pivotal in saving lives. 29 Jul 24. Senegal takes delivery of two landing craft from Israel. Israel Shipyards has delivered two 24 metre long landing craft (LCM) to Senegal after signing a contract for the vessels two years ago.
On 25 July, Israel Shipyards said it was excited to announce that the two LCMs had successfully arrived at their destination. The Yoff and Fadioth were shown moored at their new home, and flying the Senegalese flag.
“This marks another significant achievement for Israel Shipyards Ltd, showcasing our dedication to delivering advanced maritime solutions. The next phase involves the Training part of our Transfer of Technology (TOT) programme, where Israel Shipyards’ team will work closely with the customer team to ensure seamless operation and ongoing support,” the shipyard said.
The vessels were launched in February and completed sea trials a month ago. They will apparently replace the Goree and Karabane received from France in 2011.
“This agreement is of significant strategic importance for Israel Shipyards since this will be the first time we will provide our customers with this type of vessel,” said Eitan Zucker, CEO of Israel Shipyards.
Israel Shipyards is most well known for its patrol and attack craft, such as its successful Shaldag series, which has been bought by a number of African countries. Israel Shipyards offers 58 and 62 metre long offshore patrol vessels as well as Saar class missile corvettes (Saar 4, Saar 4.5 and Saar S-72), fast patrol craft (Shaldag MK II – MK V), commercial ships, tugboats, and multipurpose boats. It has supplied Shaldag vessels to Senegal and Nigeria, amongst others, and delivered three Shaldag Mk II and one Shaldag Mk V vessels to Senegal in 2019-2020.
Senegal’s Navy has been expanding in recent years. In 2015 the West African nation received the 45.8 metre long offshore patrol vessel Kedougou from STX France. This was ordered from Raidco Marine, which subcontracted construction to the STX Lorient shipyard.
This was followed a year later by the 58 metre long OPV-190 Fouladou offshore patrol vessel, built by France’s Ocea. In April 2021, France’s Ufast shipyard handed over the first of two RPB 33s ordered in 2018.
Senegal more recently received three OPV 58S offshore patrol vessels from France’s Piriou, with the last – the Cayor – handed over in April this year. The Walo arrived in Dakar in August 2023, and the Niani reached Dakar in January 2024.
The new vessels are part of Senegal’s plan to renew its naval fleet and allow the maritime arm of service to carry out missions such as fisheries inspection, fighting drug trafficking and piracy. According to recent information released by the South Korean Defense Company Hanwha Aerospace, after the signature of a contract with Romania on July 10, 2024 for the supply of 54 K9 155mm self-propelled howitzer and 36 K10 Ammunition Resupply Vehicles, as part of efforts to broaden its partnership with Romania, Hanwha Aerospace is offering the Redback tracked armored Infantry Fighting Vehicle (IFV) for Romania’s IFV modernization program.

In 2023, the Redback was selected for Australia’s next-generation IFV under the LAND 400 Phase 3 program for the delivery of 129 vehicles, most of which are to be built at a facility in Geelong, Victoria. To win the high-profile Australian IFV (Infantry Fighting Vehicle) contest, the Redback successfully went through the world’s most competitive IFV tests and evaluations, proving its overwhelming maneuverability and lethality compared to other armoured combat vehicles.
Currently, the Romania army is equipped with 142 tracked armored IFVs including 41 MLI-84 and 101 MLI-84M Jderul. The MLI-84 Romanian Infantry Fighting Vehicle (IFV) was developed in the late 1970s and early 1980s. It officially entered into service in 1985.
The MLI-84 is Romanian-made IFV based on the tracked chassis of the Soviet-made BMP-1 but is somewhat larger and heavier, featuring a 12.7 mm anti-aircraft machine gun mounted on the left side of the rear troop compartment. This vehicle is fully amphibious, propelled through water by its tracks, and equipped with an NBC system and night vision equipment for the commander, gunner, and driver. Unlike the BMP-1, which has four rectangular roof hatches, the MLI-84 has three. The left rear rectangular hatch has been replaced with a circular hatch cover, on which the 12.7 mm
The MLI-84M is a Romanian armored infantry fighting vehicle, developed by Uzina Mecanică Mizil between the 1990s and 2000s. It was officially introduced into service in 2005. It is an upgraded version of the MLI-84 infantry fighting vehicle, featuring a 25mm automatic cannon, a coaxial 7.62mm machine gun, and two Spike LR anti-tank missiles.
The Romanian Ministry of Defense is planning to replace its aging MLI-84 Infantry Fighting Vehicles (IFVs). This replacement program will occur in two stages. The first stage, spanning from 2023 to 2031, involves the acquisition of 246 new IFVs, including training simulators and initial logistical support, with a budget of approximately 2.545 bn euros. The second stage, beginning in 2031, aims to procure an additional 52 IFVs for €450m.
Several contenders have shown interest in supplying the new IFVs. These include the ASCOD from General Dynamics European Land Systems, the AS21 Redback from Hanwha, and the Lynx from Rheinmetall. The ASCOD 2 and AS21 Redback are among the leading candidates, with the ASCOD being displayed in 2022 in Romania.
This significant modernization effort is part of a broader defense renewal program for the Romanian Armed Forces, estimated to be worth around 10 bn euros until 2030.
Romania has planned to replace its old MLI-84 Infantry Fighting Vehicle (IFV) with a new generation of combat vehicles.
The Redback Infantry Fighting Vehicle (IFV) from Hanwha Defense was developed as an advanced variant of South Korea’s K21 IFV to compete for international contracts, particularly for the Australian Army’s Land 400 Phase 3 project. The development of the Redback began around 2019, with its first prototype unveiled at the Seoul International Aerospace & Defense Exhibition in October 2019.
The Australian Army selected the Redback IFV in July 2023 after extensive trials and evaluations, awarding Hanwha a multi-bn-dollar contract. The first production vehicles are expected to be delivered by early 2027, with the final deliveries completed by 2028. The Redback is designed to offer enhanced protection, mobility, and firepower, featuring modular armor, advanced active protection systems, and superior crew comfort. It is equipped with a 30mm Bushmaster II cannon and can carry three crew members and up to eight infantry soldiers.
The Redback is tailored to meet modern combat requirements, integrating technologies such as the Iron Fist Active Protection System and a digital battle management system, making it a formidable addition to any military force. The vehicle’s production will involve facilities in both South Korea and Australia, highlighting the deepening defense cooperation between these two countries.
The Redback Infantry Fighting Vehicle (IFV) excels in mobility, firepower, and protection, making it a versatile and formidable asset for modern militaries. In terms of mobility, the Redback is powered by a 1,000 horsepower MTU eight-cylinder diesel engine, paired with an Allison automatic transmission, which allows it to reach speeds of up to 65 km/h. Its advanced hydropneumatic suspension system, featuring in-arm independent suspension units (ISU), provides exceptional off-road capability and ride stability, enabling the vehicle to traverse difficult terrain with ease. 25 Jul 24. Leonardo, Rheinmetall eye three-year rush to field Italy’s new tanks. Italian army generals can expect the delivery of new tanks and tracked fighting vehicles within three years from a contract signing with Leonardo and Rheinmetall, expected by year end, Leonardo’s CEO has said.
Roberto Cingolani told Defense News he did not rule out the tank’s guns being manufactured in Italy and suggested the end product could be a candidate for Europe’s future common tank program – the MGCS.
Nor did he exclude Leonardo joining forces in the future with Franco-German consortium KNDS to create a European-wide land group, despite the dramatic breakdown of collaboration talks between Leonardo and KNDS in June.
Citing the European missile house MBDA as a “very effective” model, Cingolani said he foresaw a “highly desirable” scenario in which “France, Germany and Italy get together to make one of the best tanks in the world to access global markets.”
Leonardo and Rheinmetall agreed last month to start talks on creating a joint venture to build the German firm’s Panther tank and Lynx tracked fighting vehicle for the Italian army after talks between Leonardo and KNDS to build Leopard tanks for Italy collapsed.
Cingolani said the new joint venture with Rheinmetall would be up and running by September and contracts signed with the Italian ministry of defense by year end, with the first Lynx vehicles delivered within 2-3 years and the first Panthers in three.
“We will rush as much as possible because Italian defense is in a hurry to get the first vehicles,” Cingolani said.
He added that about 40% of assembly would take place in Germany and 60% in Italy, of which 50% percent would be carried out by Leonardo and 10% by Rheinmetall’s Italian subsidiary.
“We are finalizing workshare now,” he said, adding, “In a simplified version, chassis, transmission, power and wheels are Rheinmetall, while the upper part, the turret, is Leonardo, while weaponization can come from both partners, depending on the version.”
Asked if that meant the tank’s gun could be built in Italy, he replied, “I expect some components could be produced by both partners. It’s under discussion.”
Turning to the failed deal with KNDS, which collapsed over Italian requests to mount Leonardo systems onboard Leopard tanks, Cingolani said, “We tried really hard with KNDS but it didn’t work.”
He added, “We negotiated from December 2023 to June but the point was Leonardo needed a workshare in the range of 50-50.”
He said, “We wanted a substantial role, and with the actual version of the Leopard there was not room for Leonardo to contribute. Changing everything would have been too long and time consuming.”
Another key part of the ill-fated Leonardo-KNDS tie up was preparation to bring Italy into the MGCS program to build a pan-European tank that KNDS has negotiated.
KNDS is a consortium of Germany’s Krauss-Maffei Wegmann and France’s Nexter.
Cingolani said Leonardo’s new tie-up with Rheinmetall could see it enter MGCS thanks to its work on the Panther, which is still at the prototype stage.
“If we can make a state-of-the-art machine, very competitive, that could be a good candidate for the future main battle tank program. The joint venture could be open to other contributions. We have to be open and flexible,” he said.
Asked if the Italo-German Panther could compete with a KNDS offering to become the MGCS template, he said, “Whether its competition or collaboration, we will see in the future.”
He added, “There is not so much room in the world for so many advanced complex and expensive machines, so perhaps we can find synergies.”
After Leonardo’s deal with KNDS was announced last December, Cingolani suggested Italy, France and Germany could forge an MBDA-like land technology consortium. Now that those talks have collapsed, he said he was still keen on the concept.
“If I am asked whether I would give up a part of a domestic market to access a fraction of a much bigger global market I would have no hesitation – I would say, ‘Where do I have to sign,’” he said. (Source: Defense News)

AbramsX: Obsolete Like Aircraft Carriers?
In recent years, the main battle tank has come in for a lot of criticism – especially the more advanced versions of the weapons system.
In the Iraq War, MBTs were next to useless as the insurgency got underway. In Ukraine now, the Russians are so afraid of risking their advanced T-14 Armata tanks that they are relying on the old Soviet-era T-72 MBT to do the heavy lifting. (These systems are easy to produce and relatively cheap.)
Nevertheless, the Americans are moving ahead with another iteration of the Abrams, the tank that did so much to help the U.S. win during Operation Desert Storm and which remains the pinnacle of active MBTs – at least until the T-14 shows what it can do.
Named after U.S. Army General Creighton Abrams, the Abrams is a third-generation MBT originally designed by Chrysler Defense, which is now known as General Dynamics Land Systems.
The original M1 Abrams first entered service in the 1980s and was designed to do one thing: stop the Red Army from breaching Western Europe via the Fulda Gap in Germany. That conflict never materialized, so the Abrams was put to work in other areas, most notably during Operation Desert Storm.
Sadly, the conflict in Europe that the Abrams was designed to fight appears to be upon us yet again in the killing fields of Ukraine. As a result, the Americans have promised 31 older M1 Abrams tanks to Kyiv. But Ukraine has resisted deploying these assets, because they are older and are too heavy for the soft ground of Ukraine.

Still, the new AbramsX is on its way. One of its notable features is its advanced Chobham armor. This composite armor, developed in the United Kingdom in the 1960s, provides superior protection against a wide range of threats, including kinetic energy penetrators and high-explosive anti-tank (HEAT) rounds.
The new Abrams is also armed to the teeth. It’s equipped with a 120mm smoothbore gun, the mainstay gun of Western main battle tanks for decades. This gun can fire a variety of ammunition types, including Armor-Piercing Fin-Stabilized Discarding Sabot rounds and high-explosive HEAT rounds.
But the AbramsX isn’t just about firepower and protection. It’s also about mobility. The tank is powered by a gas turbine engine that provides a whopping 1,500 horsepower. This allows the AbramsX to reach speeds of up to 45 miles per hour on roads, making it one of the fastest tanks in the world.
The AbramsX features other advanced technologies. Its digital command and control system allows the crew to share information and coordinate their actions more effectively. It also has a laser warning receiver system, which can detect when the tank is being targeted by laser-guided weapons and automatically deploy countermeasures.

25 Jul 24. British Army’s Boxer mechanised infantry vehicle 2025 IOC at “risk.”
The UK Chief of the Defence Staff wants to form a more mobile, hard-hitting British Army, with the service at breaking point due to Ukraine donations and obsolescence.
The planned attainment of the British Army’s Boxer mechanised infantry vehicle (MIV) initial operating capability (IOC) by Q4 2025 could be at risk due to global supply chain issues, it has emerged, as the service struggles to modernise an ageing vehicle inventory.
With the British Army’s Ajax armoured cavalry vehicle also recently confirmed as not due to reach IOC until October 2025, two of the service’s landmark programmes are still over one year away from being able to deploy on the battlefield.
Confirming the Q4 2025 IOC timeline for Boxer, the UK government stated on 25 July that “wider global supply chain issues remained a delivery risk” that were being “closely managed”.
It was reported by Army Technology in June 2024 that the British Army’s Boxer MIV had completed live firing trials at the service’s Lulworth Ranges.
The firings represented the first time that British Army soldiers have operated the remote weapon station (RWS) on a UK Boxer platform, firing the general-purpose machine gun, heavy machine gun, as well as the grenade machine gun.
“The accuracy of the fully digital and stabilised RWS has been demonstrated when firing static, at night and on the move,” a British Army post stated at the time.
Supply chain risks were first noted in January this year, as reported by Army Technology, which will see fellow partners in OCCAR’s Boxer programme – Germany, Lithuania and the Netherlands – use their spares parts for the UK Boxers.
This arrangement was reported to have to potential continue for up to two years.
Boxer key element of UK’s new mobile army
The current contract order will see 623 Boxer MIV across a range of variants delivered to the UK, although a June 2023 UK Government statement indicated that funding had been allocated for 1,016 Boxer MIVs against a land requirement of 1,305 units.
In January 2024 the UK MoD said that the Boxer was to begin formal customer validation trials for the command variant platform, coming after the MoD’s Defence Equipment & Support agency received prototype vehicles in December 2023.
The Boxer programme is also being delivered by RBSL from Telford and Stockport, with the European OCCAR agency stating the UK would receive initial operating capability platforms by Q4 2024.
Hollowed out by continued equipment donations to Ukraine, the UK government has a British Army incapable of projecting itself at force, lacking platforms, munitions, and firepower.
The Boxer is a key capability in the British Army’s modernisation efforts as the service looks to reorient itself in a new Nato operating concept amid Russia’s ongoing war in Ukraine.
Delivering a speech to the RUSI Land Warfare Conference 2024 on 23 July, UK Chief of the Defence Staff, Admiral Tony Radakin, said that the unique geography that the UK has “shapes” its role in Nato, giving examples of where countries such as Poland were doubling down on large land formation, the British Army could be different.
“It is why over the past two years I’ve been working with [Nato’s Supreme Allied Commander Europe – SACEUR] to position the (UK-led) Allied Rapid Reaction Corps to become one of NATO’s two Strategic Reserves, with the other being led by France,” Radakin said.
“What SACEUR wants most from the UK is an Army that is more lethal. More mobile. More available. Organised to advance, react and respond at Division, and Corps levels. And equipped to strike faster, harder and deeper.”
Any delays to the IOC of what amounts to be the mobility element of the British Army infantry force could have a significant short term impact on the UK’s ability to deliver what Nato is seeking.

26 Jul 24. Proforce debuts new Hulk armoured vehicle. Nigeria’s Proforce has introduced a new armoured vehicle, the PF Hulk, designed for military troop and equipment transportation.
The company, revealing the new mine-resistant, ambush-protected (MRAP) vehicle this week, said the PF Hulk has a gross vehicle weight (GVW) of 15 tons and a protection level of NATO STANAG 4569 Level 3A/3B. This gives protection against an 8 kg anti-tank mine under any wheel and under the centre of the vehicle; ballistic protection against 7.62×51 mm armour piercing rounds; and against 155 mm high explosive shells exploding at a distance of 60 metres.
The vehicle can carry up to ten personnel, and supports the installation of weapon systems and specialized equipment. It can also tow trailered systems.
Proforce said the PF Hulk is equipped with a 360-horsepower engine, a five-speed mechanical transmission, and has a range of 1 000 kilometres.
The Hulk is the latest in a growing range of Proforce armoured vehicles. In July 2022, the company unveiled the new lightweight PF Fury vehicle, which it said is designed to cater to the needs of the Nigerian military’s infantry and Special Operations forces.
Proforce also displayed its PF Viper armoured personnel carrier, originally unveiled in 2021 as a lighter, faster and more manoeuvrable version of its Ara vehicle. The company’s flagship APC is its PF2, which has been exported to Rwanda, the Central African Republic and South Sudan (it is used for United Nations peacekeeping missions in the CAR and South Sudan). At home, the Nigerian Police Force has acquired a number of PF2 APCs, and this includes by Rivers State and Lagos State. On the larger end of the scale, Proforce’s flagship MRAP is its Ara (Thunder), which is designed and manufactured in Nigeria.
In addition to its Ara and PF2 vehicles, Proforce has a steadily growing product portfolio that encompasses land, air and sea.
