17 Jan 23. Foundation stone laid at new Rheinmetall ammunition factory in Várpalota, Hungary. The foundation stone has been laid for the new Rheinmetall plant in Várpalota, Hungary, where ammunition for various systems will be produced by the joint venture Rheinmetall Hungary Munitions in cooperation with the Hungarian state. Production of 33mm-medium-calibre ammunition for the Lynx infantry fighting vehicle now being manufactured at the Rheinmetall plant in Zalaegerszeg is scheduled to start in 2024.

In a second phase, production capacity will be expanded and the product range widened to include other ammunition types.

A longstanding strategic partner of Hungary, Rhein¬metall AG will then be able to produce ammunition for the Leopard 2 tank and PzH 2000 self-propelled howitzer at the Várpalota plant. Both of these systems are used by the Hungarian Army. Part of the production is earmarked for the Hungarian armed forces, with some products destined for export.

Full production capacity will be reached in 2025. In addition, Rheinmetall also plans to conduct R&D in Várpalota.

The Group is thus systematically expanding its ammunition production capacity. It recently announced the acquisition of Spanish ammunition maker Expal, which will double its manufacturing capacity in this domain.

Rheinmetall also produces ammunition in Germany, Italy, Switzerland, South Africa, and Australia.

Rheinmetall is an important partner of Hungary, helping the country to achieve its strategic goals and develop its national defence industry. With this plant, Rheinmetall will be able to meet Hungary’s future ammunition needs as well as the growing demand for ammunition from Germany’s other partner countries. In addition to capital expenditure in Várpalota, Rheinmetall has been investing in extra production capacity and a development centre in Zalaegerszeg, where vehicle systems like the Lynx infantry fighting vehicle are being developed and produced, as well as in Szeged.

Furthermore, Rheinmetall announced in May 2022 that it would set up a joint venture with the 4iG Plc and the Hungarian state-owned company HM Electronics, Logistics and Property Management Plc (HM EI Zrt.) to drive forward the digitalisation of the Hungarian armed forces and selected NATO member states. Rheinmetall thus continues to expand its position in Hungary as a capable partner of the Hungarian armed forces. The core objective of the cooperation is to promote digitalisation of the Hungarian armed forces and other NATO countries in Central and Eastern Europe and to develop and supply the necessary digital equipment.

When it is complete, the factory in Várpalota will employ about 200 people. More workers will be needed as the plant grows.

“We need employees in our team with experience in production, quality assurance, purchasing, warehousing and logistics, plant maintenance and administration. We are also specifically looking for professionals who are trained and experienced in handling explosives and ammunition”, declares plant CEO Michael Krebs.

MARITIME

18 Jan 23. New UK subsea protection ship arrives into Merseyside.

Britain’s critical subsea infrastructure is set to be strengthened as the first of two future undersea surveillance ships today arrived into Birkenhead.

  • New subsea protection ship arrives at Cammell Laird, Birkenhead.
  • Following a formal handover to the Royal Navy in the coming days, the ship will undergo a period of military modification.
  • The vessel is due to be operational in Summer 2023.

Once operational, the ship will be dedicated to safeguarding seabed telecommunications cables and oil and gas pipelines. The 98-metre-long, adaptable offshore patrol vessel – the length of Big Ben – will act as a ‘mother ship’, operating remote and autonomous offboard systems for underwater surveillance and seabed warfare, vital to our national security.

Shortly after arriving at Cammell Laird, the ship will be repainted and have critical military equipment installed, before taking up its role as the first of two Multi-Role Ocean Surveillance (MROS) ships, operated by the Royal Fleet Auxiliary (RFA) later this year.

The vessel will be formally handed over to control of the RFA in the next few days, several months ahead of schedule – following an acceleration of the acquisition announced by the Defence Secretary in November 2022.

Defence Secretary, Ben Wallace, said: “The first of two dedicated subsea surveillance ships will join the fleet this Summer, bolstering our capabilities and security against threats posed now and into the future.

It is paramount at a time when we face Putin’s illegal invasion of Ukraine, that we prioritise capabilities that will protect our critical national infrastructure.”

The vessel – currently named ‘Topaz Tangaroa’, but due to be renamed as it joins the RFA fleet – was selected to meet the requirements of the Royal Navy, having been built four years ago to support a mix of underwater operations, including work on oil rigs, construction, maintenance and inspection work, as well as autonomous submarine operations.

The 6,000-tonne vessel is equipped with a helipad, crane, and expansive working deck and features a ‘moon pool’ – a large access point in the underside of the hull through which submersible capabilities can be launched.

Head of the Royal Fleet Auxiliary, Commodore David Eagles RFA, said: “This is an entirely new mission for the Royal Fleet Auxiliary – and one we relish. We have been entrusted with supporting a key operation to safeguard the UK’s infrastructure, security and prosperity and that fills all of us in the RFA with pride. These are really exciting times.”

The vessel, will be crewed by around two-dozen RFA sailors, while around 60 Royal Navy specialists will operate the undersea surveillance systems and other survey and warfare systems when embarked.

DE&S Director General Ships Vice Admiral Paul Marshall said:

DE&S worked at pace to successfully accelerate the purchase and delivery of the first ship under the critical MROS programme. We continue to work with agility to support the UK MOD in addressing both the current and future threats posed by an ever-changing world.”

The vessel is due to enter operational service in Summer this year, with the programme for the acquisition of a second ship currently in concept phase. (Source: https://www.gov.uk/)

13 Jan 23. US SECNAV reveals name of Arleigh Burke-class vessel DDG 140.

The ship has been named after Navy’s former captain and Medal of Honour recipient Thomas Gunning Kelley. US Navy Secretary (SECNAV) Carlos Del Toro has revealed the name of future Arleigh Burke-class Flight III guided-missile destroyer, DDG 140.

The vessel has been named in honour of US Navy former captain Thomas Gunning Kelley, who is also a recipient of Medal of Honour.

The name was announced during the 35th annual Surface Navy Association National Symposium in Arlington, Virginia on 12 January.

Del Toro said: “May we all, especially the future men and women assigned to this ship, always be inspired by Kelley’s brilliant leadership, bold initiative and resolute determination.”

Kelley began his journey with the US Navy by serving as a Surface Warfare Officer for different vessels, such as USS Pandemus (ARL-18) and USS Stickell (DD-888), during his early assignments.

He was then deployed in Vietnam in 1969 as a lieutenant commanding for the US Navy’s River Assault Division 152.

During this deployment, his detachment fell under attack, however, Kelly continued to save his troop, for which he was awarded with the Medal of Honour.

Kelley said. “It is a tremendous honour, and I am truly humbled, especially as a surface warfare sailor.”

The US Navy’s Arleigh Burke-class fleet of multi-mission destroyer can perform various operations, such as national security missions, peacetime presence as well as multi-threat air, subsurface and surface warfare missions.

The Flight III baseline starts with DDG 125, 126, 128 and includes the other follow-on ships, including DDG 140. The upgraded Flight III fleet features AN/SPY-6(V)1 air and missile defence radar (AMDR) system.

The first Flight III ship Jack H Lucas has already completed builder’s trials last month. Recently, Huntington Ingalls Industries (HII) has started the fabrication of Arleigh Burke-class vessel Sam Nunn (DDG 133). (Source: naval-technology.com)

20 Jan 23.  Mali commissions military aircraft acquired from Russia. Mali’s military leader has handed over nearly a dozen aircraft to the country’s air force after receiving them from Russia, which continues to forge close ties with the West African nation.

Transitional President Colonel Assimi Goita handed the aircraft over in the presence of Russian ambassador Igor Gromyko at President Modibo Keita International Airport on 19 January.

Amongst the aircraft on display were five L-39 jets (TZ-18C, TZ-19C, TZ-30C, TZ-32C, and TZ-35C), two Mi-8 helicopters (TZ-94H and TZ-95H), and a single Su-25 strike aircraft (TZ-25C).

Mali’s armed forces (FAMa) said the acquisitions would further contribute to the rise in power of the nation’s military. The L-39s and Su-25 will be used for attack, reconnaissance and border surveillance missions while the Mi-8s will be used to support the movement of troops on the ground.

The Air Force Chief of Staff, Brigadier General Aliou Boï Diarra, said that after decades of combat, Mali’s military has become better equipped and professional, with major advances over the past two years.

Defence Minister Colonel Sadio Camara said a strong and modern military is needed to impose security. He thanked and congratulated the “partners of Mali” who remained “faithful and loyal in difficult times”.

This was most likely in reference to Russia, which has formed a close relationship with Mali since the 2020 coup. It is believed that Wagner paramilitaries from Russia began arriving in Mali in late 2021.

Mali has been battered by an extremist campaign that began in the north of the country in 2012, with attacks spreading into Niger and Burkina Faso as well. As a result, Mali has turned to Russia to supply equipment and paramilitary forces to shore up its military.

January’s aircraft handover comes only months after Mali commissioned multiple aircraft acquired from Russia. On 9 August 2022, officials received one Su-25 jet, four L-39 jet trainers, an Mi-24P attack helicopter, an Mi-8 transport helicopter and a single Airbus C295 tactical transport aircraft. The C295 aircraft arrived on 31 May and is the second to be acquired, with the first delivered in December 2016. Two Mi-24Ps were delivered to Mali on 30 March 2022, along with Protivnik-GE/59N6-TE mobile radars from Russia. Mali also recently acquired four Mi-35s from Russia.

According to the Stockholm International Peace Research Institute’s arms transfers database, Mali in 2020 ordered four Mi-8MT/Mi-17Sh helicopters from Russia for $61m including training and weapons, with deliveries from 2021. The Su-25s and L-39s appear to be new acquisitions as well. (Source: https://www.defenceweb.co.za/)

13 Jan 23. USAF’s 354th FW receives first two F-16 jets at Eielson AFB.

The new F-16s will provide realistic training to the 354th FW pilots by replicating advanced threats. The US Air Force’s (USAF) 354th Fighter Wing (FW) has taken the delivery of its first two F-16 Fighting Falcon fighter aircraft. The new jets were delivered by the Dannelly Field Air National Guard Base (ANGB), Alabama, US, on January 12. The F-16s are being acquired to replace the existing fighter aircraft assigned under the 354th FW‘s 18th Aggressor Squadron (AGRS). Based at Eielson Air Force Base (AFB) in Alaska, the 354th FW is part of the Pacific Air Forces.

Deliveries of additional F-16 aircraft are expected to continue throughout the year. 354th Operations Group deputy commander lieutenant colonel Chad Richards said: “The Air Force is using a great opportunity to recapitalise investments made by the National Guard and upgrade the capabilities of the current Aggressor fleet.

“This is going to provide more capability and realism so that the aircraft and pilots that are being trained here in the Joint Pacific Alaska Range Complex (JPARC) can have a better adversary and they can train to a higher quality threat.”

Eielson AFB hosts several advanced airpower operations at its JPARC, which offers more than 75,000 square miles of airspace for conducting training missions.

The upgraded F-16 fighter jets feature new avionics that will allow 18th AGRS combat pilots to perform realistic training by replicating advanced threats.

The new jets will further support the squadron to take part in various multinational exercises such as RED FLAG-Alaska, together with other partner nations’ forces.

Richards added: “The updated aircraft are going to amplify their efforts and produce even more valuable training to all of our partners and allies.”

Last April, the 354th FW received the final F-35A aircraft, as part of a two-year build-up process. (Source: airforce-technology.com)

16 Jan 23. Germany’s defence minister has announced her resignation, triggering fresh uncertainty for Europe’s most populous nation as it confronts critical decisions about its response to Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. Christine Lambrecht, who has faced harsh criticism for her handling of defence policy as well as a succession of gaffes, said that a “months-long media focus” on her had left no room for a factual discussion about the German military and national security policy. She said that she had asked the chancellor, Olaf Scholz, for his permission to resign. Lambrecht, 57, was tasked with playing a key role in overseeing a “sea change” in Germany’s approach to defence and security that was promised by Scholz in the days after Vladimir Putin’s invasion. But she faced attacks for the slow pace of reforms to the Bundeswehr — the federal army — and attempts to upgrade its equipment. (Source: FT.com)
