10 Jan 23. SEA-KIT International’s brand-new production facility for its larger XL-Class Uncrewed Surface Vessel (USV) is now operational, with the first 18m hull being fitted out ready for delivery this summer to world-leading geo-intelligence specialist, Fugro.
2022 was a busy year for the growing USV designer and builder. Having announced expansion plans in March, the company went on to successfully deliver two more of its proven 12m X-Class vessels. Another two of these are currently in build in addition to the XL-Class, which has three times the payload capacity. SEA-KIT has recently been granted patents for its X and XL-Class designs.
Ben Simpson, SEA-KIT CEO said: “It is great to go into 2023 with the new facility up and running. With the addition of this building, we have tripled production capacity and expanded our R&D area. It gives us more, much-needed space for the ongoing development of launch and recovery systems for ROVs and AUVs, mast gondolas and sensor deployment systems, as well as enhancing manufacturing efficiencies for multiple USV builds.”
SEA-KIT officially opened the new building, built alongside the company’s existing base in Tollesbury, Essex, UK, on 1 October 2022. The company has also significantly invested in people over the last six months, with new starters joining the technical, design, operations and administration teams.
As well as working on a burgeoning orderbook, the team will soon be preparing the company’s testing and research vessel, USV Maxlimer, for her next mission. Maxlimer is back in the UK following a successful subsea volcano survey project in Tonga last August.
Ben continued: “We are always looking for people who want to apply their skills to supporting the company’s ethos of redefining the way we work offshore. The industry is collaboratively working towards ambitious net zero emissions targets and uncrewed vessels are already a critical part of our maritime future.”
A team from SEA-KIT will attend Oceanology International Americas next month to meet with end-users and stakeholders from the ocean science and technology community as they gather in San Diego.

09 Jan 23. Tanzania receives patrol boats donated by US. The United States has donated two patrol boats worth over $1m to Tanzania, the latest of several recent donations to African navies. The two boats were handed over to the Tanzanian Navy during a ceremony in Dar es Salaam on 16 December 2022. The US Embassy in Tanzania said the boats, worth $1.35m, will strengthen the Navy’s ability to interdict illicit activities within the sovereign waters of Tanzania. The donation included repair and maintenance equipment, towing vehicles, and a two-week training course. The boats appear to be manufactured by US company SAFE Boats. One is a 10.5 metre Interceptor model while the other is an 11.5 metre enclosed cabin command boat. US Embassy Deputy Chief of Mission Robert Raines said the donation was a continuation of the United States’ longstanding partnership with the Tanzania People’s Defence Force (TPDF) in the security arena, which includes ongoing support to help develop both Tanzania’s military and drug enforcement forces.
“The United States continues to stand with Tanzania in its efforts to combat maritime threats, and I am certain these new boats will strengthen Tanzania’s ability to secure its maritime territory,” he said. (Source: www.unmannedairspace.info)
05 Jan 23. German frigate Mecklenburg-Vorpommern joins Nato’s VJTF.
The frigate will operate in the northern flank area of operation for a period of next six months. The Germany Navy has deployed its Brandenburg-class or Type F123 frigate, named Mecklenburg-Vorpommern (F218), to join the NATO’s Very High Readiness Joint Task Force (VJTF).
The ship, along with a crew of 210 members, has been deployed in the northern flank area of operation, which includes the North Sea, the Baltic Sea and the North Atlantic Sea.
During this deployment, the Brandenburg-class frigate will serve as the flagship of the new German commander of the Nato unit for a period of next six months. The maritime unit of the Nato’s rapid reaction force will be led by the flotilla admiral Thorsten Marx.
Mecklenburg-Vorpommern captain commander Hendrik Wißler said: “This time, the ship will serve as the flagship of the new German commander of the Nato unit for six months.
“Overall, in the context of ‘deterrence and reassurance’, we can expect various large-scale Nato manoeuvres alternating with presence operations.”
Created in 2014, Nato’s VJTF is the highest-readiness element of Nato’s Response Force.
The leadership roles and responsibilities under this task force keep rotating every year between the allied nations. Last year, the VJTF was led by France and this year the task will be headed by the German forces. Other allied countries to contribute to this VJTF initiative include Belgium, the Netherlands, Norway, the Czech Republic, Latvia, Luxembourg, Lithuania, and Slovenia. Along with the maritime force, Germany is also deploying nearly 11,500 land troops to join the VJTF. 11 Jan 23. France receives first new Rafale fighter jet after four-year pause. France has received its first new Rafale fighter jet in four years, manufacturer Dassault Aviation announced Jan. 10. The company delivered the F3-R standard aircraft to the French military procurement agency Direction Générale de l’Armement (DGA) on Dec. 29, according to a company press release. The aircraft is included in the “Tranche 4″ order of 60 new aircraft awarded in 2009, but which was then paused due to budgetary reasons. For the past several years, Dassault has dedicated its Rafale production line to exports, as nations including Greece, Indonesia, and the United Arab Emirates have placed orders for the fighter jet. But France’s 2023 defense budget, released this past September, included plans to order 42 new Rafale aircraft, signaling an end to the budget-imposed hiatus. Those aircraft include 30 aircraft that will be delivered under the forthcoming “Tranche 5″ order, as well as 12 additional aircraft meant to replace existing Rafales that France withdrew from its air force to sell to Croatia, in a 2021 deal worth an estimated €999m (U.S. $1.1bn). Croatia is slated to receive the first six fighter jets in 2024, with the remaining six aircraft arriving in 2025. Those 12 Rafales will replace the Croatian Air Force’s Soviet-designed Mikoyan MiG-21 fighters. Dassault plans to deliver an additional 27 Rafales to France by the end of 2024 under the Tranche 4 order, along with the 12 new aircraft meant to replace those bound for Zagreb, the company said. The Rafale is outfitted with two Safran-built Snecma M88 engines and a Thales-built RBE2 AA active electronically scanned array (AESA) radar. The F-3R standard, declared fully operational in 2021, is equipped with MBDA’s Meteor long-range air-to-air missile as well as Thales’ Talios laser designator pod for use in air-to-ground strikes, and the laser homing version of Safran’s AASM air-to-ground modular weapon, per Dassault. France’s DGA began flight tests for the Rafale’s next “F4″ upgrade in April 2021, slated for full availability by 2025. The new standard will upgrade existing capabilities including the Thales ASEA radar and Talios targeting pod, as well as the Rafale’s electronic warfare system, and communications suite. New capabilities for the F4 include the Thales Scorpion Helmet Mounted Display, MBDA’s MICA NG (Next-Generation) air-to-air missile and the 1,000 kilogram variant of Safran’s AASM (armement air-sol modulaire) “Hammer” precision-guided munition. The F4 standard is expected to serve as a bridge between the Rafale and France’s next-generation fighter aircraft being developed under the trinational Future Combat Air System (FCAS) program. 11 Jan 23. USAF conducts first flight test of F-35 in TR-3 configuration. The TR-3 upgrades memory capacity and core processing power of F-35, providing advanced software with new capabilities. The US Air Force (USAF) has carried out the maiden flight test of an F-35 fighter aircraft in the latest Technology Refresh 3 (TR-3) configuration. Conducted on 6 January, the test was executed by a developmental test team assigned under the 461st Flight Test Squadron from Edwards Air Force Base (AFB), California, US. A USAF’s experimental test pilot was deployed to perform the test in a specially instrumented test aircraft with tail number AF-7, which is also the first aircraft to be equipped with the new TR-3 upgrades. During the test flight, which lasted for 50 minutes, the pilot-operated F-35 jet at a high speed, close to the speed of sound, above the Mojave Desert at a height of 35,000ft. Before flying the aircraft, the deployed test pilot also conducted a functional check flight to determine its system stability and airworthiness. The new flight test marks the beginning of a series of developmental and operational flight tests that will be performed throughout the year. The test campaign will assess the safety and warfighting capabilities of the new aircraft configuration. USAF F-35 Joint Programme Office programme executive officer lieutenant general Mike Schmidt said: “TR-3 is the F-35’s critical computer processing electronics upgrade that will continue to provide all our pilots with the capability they need to be successful against any adversary.” The latest TR-3 upgrade is designed to provide computational horsepower to support a wide range of F-35’s Block-4 capabilities, including improved electronic warfare, long-range precision weapons, sensor suites, enhanced data fusion and increased cross-platform interoperability. All the features will allow combat pilots to identify, track, engage, and counter emerging air, ground, and cyber adversaries. (Source: airforce-technology.com)
11 Jan 23. Niger gets another C-130 Hercules from the United States. US Embassy in Niger personnel and members of the Nigerien Armed Forces oversaw the transfer of the aircraft to the Nigerien Air Force during a handover ceremony at Air Base 101 in Niamey, Niger, on 4 January. The US Embassy said the aircraft was handed over by interim charge d’affaires of the US Embassy in Niger, Susan N’Garnim, to Minister of National Defence, Alkassoum Indattou. Indattou said the third C-130’s arrival allows Niger’s military to be one of the best equipped in the region in terms of aerial transport. He added that the US has not only provided the aircraft but logistical and maintenance support as well and this includes the construction of a hangar at Air Base 101. Indattou said that since the beginning of the Libyan crisis and its impact on security and stability in the Sahel, the strategic partnership between the United States and Niger has been further strengthened. “The partner’s support has enabled a remarkable reinforcement of the logistical and operational capacities of the Air Force. The latter still benefits from the expertise and support of American partners in the operation of the C-130 fleet”, he noted.
“Today’s delivery is the most significant milestone in the 44-year history of the C-130 project between the United States of America and Niger as it aligns the training capability of the Niger on the programmes of the United States of America and other partners”, N’Garnim said.
She revealed that the US has spent $80 m to ensure that Niger’s air force has the air mobility capabilities it needs to support its fight against violent extremism. “Through our C-130 programme and other parts of our security cooperation programme, the government of the United States of America will continue to work with Niger in the fight against terrorism and regional insecurity”.
The C-130 that was handed over (5U-MTU) is a former US Air Force WC-130H (cn 382-4140), which spent four years being overhauled by Sabena Aerospace in Belgium prior to delivery, Scramble magazine reports. Niger received its second C-130H (5U-MMS) in December 2021 and its first (5U-MBH) in January 2021, and has employed the mobility platform for various humanitarian assistance operations and United Nations troop and vehicle movements.
