20 Oct 22. UK Defence accommodation set to improve through new strategy.
Serving personnel and their families will be better supported through the Defence Accommodation Strategy.
- New strategy introduces minimum standards to Single Living Accommodation
- Long-term relationships treated equal to marriage and civil partnerships
- Housing allocation based on family needs rather than military rank
This holistic approach prioritises the needs and personal circumstances of individuals, and ensures the most suitable accommodation is allocated.
The Government is also extending the eligibility requirements of the Service Families Accommodation to make sure the same level of support is offered to those in long term relationships. As a result of this change, the Ministry of Defence will be able to offer more service people access to a larger variety of housing leading to the reduction in excess housing.
During a visit to Combermere Barracks, Windsor, Minister for Defence People, Veterans and Service Families Sarah Atherton also confirmed that the Ministry of Defence will raise the standards of Single Living Accommodation through a number of measures set out in the Defence Accommodation Strategy, delivering on a wider commitment to ensure the needs of serving personnel are met.
Setting out a clear vision to improve accommodation for those serving in the Armed Forces and their families, the strategy promotes the fair allocation of accommodation, seeks to improve the quality of accommodation, and ensure better value for money whilst promoting environmental sustainability.
Minister for Defence People, Veterans and Service Families Sarah Atherton said:
Our Armed Forces dedicate their lives to our nation and deserve a decent standard of accommodation. The changes I have announced today will ensure we maximise the support we provide.
Serving personnel and their families make significant sacrifices to adapt to the various demands of service life. We must do all we can to give them the right accommodation that meets their needs, now and into the future.
The strategy focuses on:
- The introduction of a minimum standard for Single Living Accommodation which will raise the baseline quality across the entire defence estate, which all SLA accommodation must adhere to. This is in addition to mandatory safety and legal compliance measures that SLA must offer individuals including appropriately private, quiet, secure, dry, appropriately ventilated and heated space with access to hot water.
- Adapting the allocation of accommodation to take into account individual needs rather than basing decision on rank.
- Recognising long-term relationships as equal to marriage or civil partnerships, allowing serving personnel to apply for accommodation in the same manner as those who are married and in civil partnerships.
Chief of Defence People Lieutenant General James Smith said:
The world has changed dramatically over the past few decades and the accommodation needs of our Service people and their families have changed with it.
This strategy makes a commitment that in the future accommodation need will be based on the individual family and that all established long term relationships are treated equally. A modern offer for a modern military providing access to high quality, affordable accommodation for those who help protect the nation. (Source: https://www.gov.uk/)

17 Oct 22. thyssenkrupp delivers Egyptian Navy’s first MEKO A-200 frigate Al-Aziz. German shipbuilding company ThyssenKrupp Marine Systems (TMS) has delivered the first of four MEKO A-200 frigates, named Al-Aziz, to the Egyptian Navy. Delivery of the new vessel was marked by a ceremony held in Bremerhaven, Germany, on 14 October. In the same event, the Egyptian Navy ’s chief of staff vice-admiral Ashraf Ibrahim Atwa also named the second MEKO A-200 frigate as Al-Qadeer.
Atwa said: “Germany always supports Egypt with the up-to-date technology needed to enhance our naval capabilities.
“We have a longstanding and successful history of cooperation, as reflected in the highly efficient 209 submarines.
“Our cooperation was not limited to only building new ships but was also extended to cover advanced training for our crews to absorb the new advanced technology.”
Launched in April last year, the new vessel Al-Aziz is now set to start its voyage to its home port in Alexandria, Egypt.
The Egyptian Navy ’s four MEKO A-200 vessels are being constructed as part of a contract signed in September 2018.
Under this MEKO A-200 construction contract, TMS is responsible for building the first three vessels in Germany, while the fourth frigate is being constructed by an Egyptian company Alexandria Shipyard (ASY).
TMS CEO Oliver Burkhard said: “This record timeline was possible only because the Egyptian Navy and ThyssenKrupp Marine Systems have such a long and trustful partnership.
“The strategic programme is based on an open and collaborative dialogue with our customers and we are thankful for their tireless efforts in contributing to the success of this project.”
Earlier in July this year, Naval Group announced the completion of initial sea trials for the Egyptian Navy ’s third Gowind-class corvette.

17 Oct 22. Second SA Navy MMIPV ready for launch. Damen Shipyards Cape Town will soon launch the second multi-mission inshore patrol vessel (MMIPV) for the South African Navy (SAN), with handover next year following sea trials.
The launch date moved closer with a blessing ceremony held at Damen Shipyards Cape Town on 14 October, the company revealed.
During the event, the vessel was blessed and a bottle of champagne was broken over the bow as is the custom, and the South African flag was raised on the vessel.
After the ceremony, the second MMIPV will be launched into the water and then delivered to the SAN in 2023 after extensive acceptance trials. The third vessel will be delivered one year later in 2024. Armscor has indicated deliveries will be in April of both years.
Sefale Montsi, Director at DSCT said: “With this ceremony, this vessel will soon join her sister, SAS King Sekhukhune II in successfully sailing South African and international waters. The project continues to meet the client’s specifications, on time and within budget. Damen Shipyards Cape Town and our growing local supply chain stand ready to deliver more of these much-needed vessels to our navy.”
“We are pleased with the progress that has been made thus far”, said Armscor Group Executive Acquisition and Supply Chain Management, Meshak Teffo. “We are committed to providing the South African National Defence Force with state-of-the-art defence materiel they require to protect the sovereignty of the country. This MMIPV Project demonstrates our capability to deliver on complex acquisition solutions. We are looking forward to the delivery of this second Multi Mission Inshore Patrol Vessel next year.”
The first MMIPV (P1571), SAS King Sekhukhune I, was handed to the SA Navy on 18 May. The second vessel will be named SAS Adam Kok and the third SAS King Shaka. The first vessel took part in Exercise Ibsamar with India last week, sailing off the coast of Gqeberha (Port Elizabth). This was the vessel’s first exercise.
DSCT said the MMIPV project is playing an important role in creating skilled new jobs and acting as a catalyst for the development of regional supply chains. On its own, the MMIPV project is expected to generate more than one m man-hours of work during the construction of the three MMIPVs and will support more than 1 000 direct and indirect jobs. Beyond work on the vessel, DSCT benefits from the global reach of Damen Shipyards Group to secure new business for South African industry.
“This project has also allowed the yard to increase the impact of its transformation strategy and we have achieved a level 1 BEE rating. Our strategy to make transformation part of business as usual made it possible to over-deliver on Armscor’s requirements for engagement of local businesses and workforce, as well as vessel capabilities,” Montsi said. 14 Oct 22. Damen begins construction of Pakistani Navy’s second batch of OPVs. Damen Shipyards has officially started the construction of the second batch of two offshore patrol vessels (OPV) for the Pakistani Navy.
The commencement was marked by a combined keel-laying and steel-cutting ceremony for the first and second vessels, respectively.
A ceremony was held at Damen Shipyards Galatí, Romania on 12 October, in the presence of Pakistani delegates and officials, including Pakistani Navy chief of naval staff admiral Muhammad Amjad Khan Niazi.
The event involved Niazi performing traditional keel authentication by welding the initials onto the plate. It was followed by performing the first steel cut for the second OPV.
Niazi said: “These ships will act as force multipliers in enhancing the navy’s capability of safeguarding maritime frontiers and will offer more flexibility for the Regional Maritime Security Patrols (RMSP) in the Indian Ocean.”
Delivery of the first OPV is expected in February 2024, while the second vessel will be delivered by August 2024.
The new vessels will be Damen’s OPV 2600 multi-mission patrol ships.
Once delivered, the OPVs will provide enhanced search and rescue capability to the Pakistani Navy to protect the country’s international maritime trade routes.
The new patrol vessels are equipped with advanced communication systems, electronic warfare systems and anti-ship, anti-air sensors to perform extended range missions.
According to Damen, the latest order builds on the Pakistani Navy’s positive experience with initial two OPV 2300 that were ordered by the Islamic Republic of Pakistan’s Ministry of Defence (MoD).
The first and second OPVs were commissioned as the Pakistani Navy’s Yarmook-class vessels in February and November 2020. (Source: naval-technology.com)
