10 Oct 22. Safran Inaugurates the Safran Additive Manufacturing Campus, a New Center of Excellence. The Safran Additive Manufacturing Campus, the Group’s new center of excellence in this advanced technology, located in Le Haillan, near Bordeaux in southwest France, was inaugurated today by Ross McInnes, Chairman of the Safran Board of Directors, and Olivier Andriès, Chief Executive Officer, in a ceremony attended by Roland Lescure, French Minister of Industry and Alain Rousset, President of the Nouvelle Aquitaine region of the southwest France. Safran’s new 12,500 square meter facility groups all processes needed to make parts using additive manufacturing, from research and development to engineering and production. Already more than 100 world-class scientists, engineers and technicians work in the facility to produce parts for the whole group using state-of-the-art installations, especially 3D printers that use 3D digital models to turn metallic powders into aircraft and engine parts. Additive manufacturing delivers real benefits to aviation because it allows the production of parts that were impossible to make with other methods, often combining several functions in a single piece. Additive Manufacturing is also an eco-friendly process because it limits the consumption of both raw materials and energy, while significantly reducing weight, thus cutting fuel consumption and contributing to the decarbonization of aviation which is Safran’s top priority. In addition, additive manufacturing reduces machining time, which boosts competitiveness. The first one thousand 3D-printed parts from the Safran Additive Manufacturing Campus have been delivered to Safran Helicopter Engines since June 2022. The Campus aims to deliver a total of 4,000 parts this year and then double that figure in 2023.

“We made a strategic decision to create this new center of excellence to consolidate Safran’s expertise in additive manufacturing and accelerate the application of this disruptive technology,” said Olivier Andries, CEO of Safran. “We will be leveraging the advantages of this technology to make our new products even lighter, while enhancing their performance – and that’s the key to meeting our industry’s objective of reducing its environmental impact. A quarter of the parts in some of our engines could eventually be made using this process.” (Source: ASD Network)

PLANT CLOSURES, JOB LOSSES AND STRIKES

13 Oct 22. Huge jobs blow as 200 positions to be axed at Coventry factory. It follows a takeover in September by American firm Parker Aerospace. Around 200 workers at Coventry’s Meggitt factory are set to lose their jobs by Christmas, CoventryLive understands. The devastating news has been broken to all affected employees at the firm, which used to be based in Holbrooks and is now at a new site in Ansty Park. The company has been taken over by American firm Parker Aerospace. It is understood the jobs set to go are in central corporate and support departments. CoventryLive was contacted by a reader, who did not want to be named, who claimed it was a sign of things to come. “This is just the start of redundancies for UK-based employees,” they said. A Parker Meggitt spokesman said, in a statement, that a consultation would soon be launched for all affected employees. “Following a review of the business, Parker Meggitt is proposing organizational changes to Meggitt’s corporate central functions in Ansty Park (UK),” the statement read.

“After the combination of the two businesses in September, some of the work previously undertaken by Meggitt’s corporate central functions, predominantly in the UK and USA, may no longer be required. Colleagues in the UK have been advised of these proposed changes which may lead to workforce reductions of approximately 200 roles, subject to consultation with representatives of the potentially affected employees. REST OF THE WORLD APPOINTMENTS

10 Oct 22. Russia has appointed a new commander to lead all of its forces in Ukraine as the Kremlin’s war marches into its eighth month. Sergei Surovikin, an Army general who also oversees Russia’s air force, previously led Russian forces in Syria. His new role will involve galvanizing Russian troops after a slew of setbacks, including heavy losses of troops and equipment, and the forfeiture of thousands of square miles of occupied territory. Surovikin’s appointment comes on the heels of Russian President Vladimir Putin’s plans to conscript hundreds of thousands of Russian men for the war. Putin’s order for approximately 300,000 Russians to join the fight in Ukraine is the first time since World War II that Moscow has drafted civilians into the military. The Kremlin’s decision to impose a partial draft was triggered in part by a series of stunning Ukrainian advances in recent weeks. (Source: Defense News Early Bird/CNBC)

10 Oct 22. The UK’s longest-running science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) roadshow for schools engaged its one millionth pupil at Blackburn Central High School today.   Delivered jointly by BAE Systems, the Royal Navy and the Royal Air Force, the Schools STEM Roadshow, which began in 2005, currently visits over 420 schools across the UK each year. It provides a highly interactive experience for students aged 10 to 13 years old in primary and secondary schools and is designed to inspire excitement in STEM subjects.

This year’s show focuses on magnets and the important role they play in everything from healthcare, to transport to electricity generation. A series of experiences and demonstrations showcase practical applications of science concepts and bring them to life for the students.

Tracy Reeves, Assistant Headteacher at Blackburn Central High School said: “We’ve welcomed the roadshow into our school for many years and have always found it to be inspirational, interactive and informative for our students. We are thrilled to help celebrate the participation of the 1 mth pupil as we welcome every opportunity to enrich the lives of our students and increase their awareness of the world around them, whilst raising aspirations. Our families are really supportive of our approach to increase ambition; we know this as many of our students go on to study sciences and engineering once they leave Blackburn Central High School.”

Richard Hamer, Education and Skills Director, BAE Systems, added: “We’re committed to supporting young people and local communities across the UK and over the last 17 years, the Schools Roadshow has proved to be an effective way to encourage young people to explore STEM subjects and consider future career opportunities. These activities help companies like ours develop a diverse and talented pipeline of apprentices and graduates whose skills are critical to the UK maintaining its leadership position in technology and innovation.”

Wing Commander Russ Barnes, Senior Officer Commanding Youth and STEM, Royal Air Force, commented: “The RAF recognises that raising awareness of the value of STEM subjects and their links to future career opportunities is essential for an RAF workforce that comprises more than 50% engineers and engineer technicians. Since 2008, we have provided STEM educational support across the UK, through a blend or direct and indirect engagement and offered free, curriculum mapped STEM resources to schools. Through engagements like the Schools STEM Roadshow we aim to provide opportunity to as many young people as possible so that we, as a society, have the largest number of STEM qualified people possible.”

Commander Dave Pinder, STEM Engagement Lead, Royal Navy, said: “The Royal Navy’s delighted that it has helped fund the Roadshow for a number of years to encourage young people to take STEM subjects at school. The positive, enthusiastic and humorous delivery mechanism we believe opens up the world of science, technology, engineering and mathematics to young people who will have never considered such subjects could be fun or rewarding. Our association with the roadshow along with BAE Systems and the RAF has clearly had an impact on so many young people over the years and we are delighted to be here today celebrating the delivery to the one mth young person!”

BAE Systems, the Royal Air Force and the Royal Navy currently employ more than 50,000 engineers across the UK and are committed to engaging with young people on STEM activities to encourage and support a highly skilled workforce of the future.
