06 Oct 22. Raytheon Australia begins construction of new facility in Queensland. The industry-funded facility will provide integrated solutions to meet the requirements of the ADF. Raytheon Australia has officially started the construction of its new facility, the Centre for Collaboration, in southeast Queensland.
This marks a significant step towards the company’s national infrastructure strategy to deliver the defence capability to Australia.
The new facility is a fully defence industry-funded precinct that will be a hub for carrying out all the integrated logistics and engineering related works.
Given that the steel industry is responsible for about 8% of the world’s carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions, lowering the volumes of these emissions from manufacturing facilities is crucial for steelmakers as the global decarbonisation agenda continues to expand.
Companies acting now to enhance sustainability will benefit from environmental, social, and governance (ESG) indicators to gain a competitive edge and stay ahead of changing carbon legislation.
For decades, advances in technology and a move away from traditional blast furnaces (BFs) toward electric arc furnaces (EAFs) have greatly reduced energy use in steel…
It will be similar to Raytheon’s Centre for Joint Integration, located in South Australia.
In addition, the facility will strengthen the partnership between the Australian Defence Force (ADF) and nation’s industry.
The 7,000m² Centre for Collaboration will feature several high-specification capability spaces, including flexible-use workshops, office accommodation and laboratories.
Initially, the new centre will have over 200 Raytheon Australia employees, which is expected to increase to around 300 employees in the next few years.
Once open, the Centre for Collaboration will provide integrated solutions to meet the requirements of the ADF, as well as support the forces in realising the full operational capabilities of various systems.
Raytheon Australia managing director Michael Ward said: “More importantly, this facility will bring together defence industry partners in a secure, purpose-designed facility, where we can continue to collaborate in our role as a trusted capability partner for Defence.
“This engagement will also include increased opportunities to work with our Queensland-based small- and medium-enterprise partners including members of our Capability Plus programme – that aims to support local businesses to improve their competitiveness to win defence work while also building local supply chain resilience.”
In 2017, Raytheon Australia partnered with Air Affairs Australia to provide electronic warfare (EW) training services for the ADF.

04 Oct 22. BAE Systems opens new $150m Austin, Texas facility, expanding innovation and manufacturing capabilities. BAE Systems has opened its new $150m engineering and production facility in Austin, Texas – the latest step in a series of strategic facility investments across the country, including in Manchester, New Hampshire; Cedar Rapids, Iowa; and, Huntsville, Alabama.
The 390,000-square-foot facility is located in Parmer Austin Business Park. Half of the facility will be dedicated to manufacturing. The new campus also includes engineering design, laboratory, and office space. At the new site, the company has expanded its state-of-the-art manufacturing capability with a streamlined design that is easily reconfigurable to match evolving technologies. Expansion space exists within the manufacturing facility ready to take on future growth.
The facility is located near Capital Factory, a hub for entrepreneurs in Texas. BAE Systems is a member of Capital Factory’s Innovation Council and collaborates with startups and small businesses to accelerate the development of new defense technology.
“We are growing our business, our talent, and our brand in Central Texas,” said Dave Harrold, vice president and general manager of Countermeasure & Electromagnetic Attack Solutions at BAE Systems Electronic Systems. “Our goal is to double our workforce in Austin over the next several years.”
BAE Systems’ Austin employees innovate for a wide range of programs in the areas of autonomy, cyber, and sensor development. Work at the site will also focus on new and existing programs including the design, development, and manufacturing of radio frequency and electro-optical/infrared countermeasure systems, as well as aircraft electrification technology.
“BAE Systems and its legacy companies have been in the Austin area for more than 65 years,” said Scott Hatch, director of the Austin Business Center. “Our company has been a global leader in technology for generations. Now we’re excited to have innovative Texas talent continue to take us to the next level.”
The new Austin site is part of BAE Systems’ Electronic Systems sector, a global leader in researching, developing, implementing, and maintaining cutting-edge commercial, defense, and space electronics. (Source: BUSINESS WIRE)

06 Oct 22. USN lays keel for eighth Pathfinder-class ship T-AGS 67. T-AGS 67 will be deployed for conducting acoustic, geophysical biological and physical surveys. Halter Marine has officially started the construction of the US Navy’s eighth Pathfinder-class oceanographic survey ship, T-AGS 67. The beginning of the construction of T-AGS 67 was marked by a keel-laying ceremony held at the company’s shipyard in Pascagoula, Mississippi on 4 October.
During the ceremony, US Navy Programme Executive Officer, Ships rear admiral Tom Anderson authenticated the keel for the new survey vessel.
The T-ATS 8 is named after the Saginaw Chippewa Tribe, whose chief Theresa Peters Jackson was also the keel authenticator for the ship.
Anderson said: “This is an awesome Navy Day as we gather to celebrate this multi-mission platform and the range of capabilities it will bring to fleet, including towing, salvage, rescue, oil spill response and humanitarian assistance.
“It is an honour to be joined by members of Saginaw Chippewa Tribe as keel is authenticated for their namesake ship and we are excited to honour their heritage and commitment to service of country.”
The T-ATS is deployed to support fleet operations of various ocean-going tug, salvage and rescue ships. Bollinger is also building USNS Navajo (T-ATS 6) and USNS Cherokee Nation (T-ATS 7). (Source: naval-technology.com)
03 Oct 22. Taiwan MND transfers indigenously built LPD Yushan to navy.
The vessel has been developed as part of President Ing-wen’s defence self-sufficiency initiative.
Taiwan’s Ministry of National Defence (MND ) has officially handed over the landing platform dock (LPD) vessel, named Yushan, to the Taiwanese Navy. Delivery of the vessel was accepted during a ceremony held in Kaohsiung on 30 September. It was attended by various officials, including Taiwanese President Tsai Ing-wen.
Tsai said: “When it comes to China’s military threats, only by strengthening our self-defence capabilities can there be true peace.
“It is our constant policy and determination to implement national defence autonomy so that the military has the best equipment to defend the country.”
The country’s first indigenously built amphibious vessel has been named after Taiwan’s highest mountain Yushan.
It has been developed as part of President Ing-wen’s defence self-sufficiency initiative.
The 10,600t vessel will be used by the country’s land forces to transport equipment and other supplies to the vulnerable islands.
In a tweet, Taiwan MND said: “Named after the highest Mt. in Taiwan, Yushan, our first indigenous LPD, was just transferred to ROC Navy today. She will supply our outlying islands, transport troops, conduct HA/DR operations, and reinforce our forces with TF aboard.”
Constructed by shipbuilding company CSBC, Yushan is equipped with a cannon to counter air and surface threats as well as anti-aircraft missiles.
Tsai added: “We can say that the Yushan warship is a transport ship that can specifically demonstrate the navy’s ability to “relieve disasters in peacetime and fight in wartime.” (Source: naval-technology.com)

07 Oct 22. Embraer advances in the production of the first KC-390 Millennium for Hungary. Embraer continues to advance in the production of the first KC-390 Millennium aircraft for the Hungarian Defence Forces. In November 2020, the Hungarian government signed a contract with Embraer for the acquisition of two KC-390 aircraft in the process of strengthening the capabilities of the Hungarian Defence Forces. Currently, Embraer is assembling the semi-wings on the aircraft’s fuselage, with both structures already painted in the customer’s colors.
“We regularly follow the assembly of our first KC-390, and the production of the aircraft is significantly ahead of what was stipulated in the contract compared to the original plans, progressing better than planned,” said Colonel László Nagy, Head of Air Force Systems Development Branch, Hungarian Defence Forces Command, Force Planning Directorate. “We have also established a good relationship with the Brazilian Air Force, which gives us an opportunity for consultations that can be used extremely effectively by our teams in Hungary.”
Flight tests of the first aircraft will begin in the second half of 2023, with delivery taking place in the second quarter of 2024. The second unit of the KC-390 for Hungary is scheduled to begin production in December 2022, thus maintaining the original schedule, and is expected to be delivered by the end of 2024. The KC-390 for the Hungarian Defence Forces will be the first in the world with the Intensive Care Unit in its configuration, an essential feature for performing humanitarian missions. The KC-390 is fully NATO compatible, not only in terms of its hardware but also in its avionics and communications configuration. Furthermore, the KC-390 probe and drogue refueling system means the aircraft can refuel the Hungarian JAS 39 Gripen as well as other aircraft that use the same technology.
The aircraft fully meets the requirements of the Hungarian Defence Forces, being able to perform different types of military and civilian missions, including Medical Evacuation, Cargo and Troops Transport, Precision Cargo Airdrop, Paratroopers Operations, and Air-to-Air Refueling (AAR).
In June 2022, Embraer and Aeroplex signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to cooperate on a project to qualify Aeroplex as an Embraer Authorized Service Center (EASC) in Hungary. The aim is to support and enable Aeroplex to provide maintenance for the Hungarian Defence Forces KC-390 Millennium aircraft.
04 Oct 22. Indian Air Force inducts new light combat helicopter Prachanda. The Indian Ministry of Defence (MoD) has announced the induction of the new indigenously built light combat helicopter (LCH) into the Indian Air Force (IAF). A ceremony was held to mark the induction of the helicopter in Jodhpur, Rajasthan, India. It was attended by Indian Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, chief of air staff (CAS) air chief marshal V R Chaudhary along with other senior officials from the IAF, MoD and local dignitaries.
Inducted in the IAF’s newly formed No. 143 Helicopter Unit, the LCH has been named as ‘Prachanda’ by Rajnath Singh.
According to Chaudhary, the aircraft will boost the IAF’s combat potential and the offensive capabilities of the LCH are comparatively better than most attack helicopters.
The IAF has also completed the selection of personnel for the new helicopter unit, which according to Chaudhary, was done based on professional competence.
The LCH has been designed and developed indigenously by Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL), giving a major boost to India’s ‘Make in India’ and ‘Aatma Nirbharatha’ endeavours.
HAL’s LCH offers various capabilities, including armour protection, night attack, ground attack and aerial combat capabilities.
It is a multi-role combat helicopter equipped with advanced navigation system, air-to-air missiles and guns customised for performing close combat operations.
Singh said: “The recent conflicts in Ukraine and elsewhere showed us that heavy weapon systems and platforms, which do not allow for rapid movement in the battlefield, are sometimes vulnerable and become easy targets for the enemy.
“Therefore, the need of the hour is to move towards the development of those equipment and platforms, which are mobile, have ease of movement, are more flexible, and at the same time meet the requirements of the armed forces.” (Source: airforce-technology.com)
30 Sep 22. Indian Army receives first indigenous Light Combat Helicopter. The helicopter is equipped with agility and manoeuvrability, and offers high altitude performance. The Indian Army has inducted an indigenously developed Light Combat Helicopter (LCH) aimed at strengthening the troops’ combat capabilities. The first LCH was handed over by the Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) to Army Aviation director general lieutenant general AK Suri.
In a Twitter post, the Army’s Additional Directorate General of Public Information said: “Highly manoeuvrable & agile, #LCH will significantly enhance the combat capability.”
The latest induction follows a clearance granted by the Cabinet Committee on Security (CCS), led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, to procure 15 LCH limited series production variants, along with infrastructure.
Quoting a defence official, the Hindu said: “It [Army Aviation] will receive the second LCH in October.”
Ahead of the induction, the Army raised its first LCH unit on 1 June 2022.
The unit will reportedly shift to the Eastern Command along the Line of Actual Control (LAC) next year.
In total, the Army intends to procure 95 LCHs, of which seven units, each comprising ten copters, will be deployed in mountainous terrains.
The 5.5-tonne class combat helicopter features armour protection, night attack capability, and crash-worthy landing gear, thereby offering better survivability. The Indian Ministry of Defence said: “The helicopter is equipped with requisite agility, manoeuvrability, extended range, high altitude performance, and around-the-clock, all-weather combat capability.”
The helicopters are expected to bolster the capabilities of the Army in performing various roles including combat search and rescue, counter insurgency operations against slow moving aircraft, and remotely piloted aircraft. In another development, the Indian Air Force (IAF) is preparing to receive ten LCHs next week. (Source: army-technology.com)
