13 Sep 22. Boeing Reveals First of New Innovative Defense Factories.
– The Phantom Works Advanced Composite Fabrication Center opens in Arizona
– First in a series of new innovative factories being built by BDS
– Will enable flexible, secure and scalable production of advanced combat aircraft
Boeing’s (NYSE: BA) Defense, Space & Security (BDS) business unit unveiled on Sept. 12 its new Advanced Composite Fabrication Center, which has been purpose-built to produce advanced composite components for future combat aircraft.
The new facility in Mesa, Ariz., will be a secure production facility operated by Phantom Works, BDS’ proprietary research, development and prototyping division. The construction phase of the 155,000 square-foot facility is now complete, and the center is expected to be fully operational this fall.
“Boeing pioneered a new era of digital aerospace engineering on programs like the T-7, MQ-25 and MQ-28, and now we’re leading the way again by digitally transforming our entire production system to build the next generation of advanced combat aircraft,” said Ted Colbert, Defense, Space & Security president and CEO. “The new Advanced Composite Fabrication Center and the factories that will follow it position Boeing to deliver the most digitally advanced, simply and efficiently produced and intelligently supported aircraft to military customers.”
Leveraging best practices from recent new-start programs like the MQ-28 Ghost Bat, MQ-25 Stingray, T-7A Red Hawk and proprietary efforts, the ACFC will enable Boeing to scale a platform-agnostic, modular and flexible digital production system across future BDS programs, providing unprecedented speed, agility and cost efficiency. Additional new factories supporting subsequent phases of production are under construction in the St. Louis region and slated to come online over the next few years.
“The ACFC capitalizes on the latest in digital engineering – from initial concept and design to the production floor and sustainment – and its capabilities are aligned directly with our customers’ need to design, build and field advanced combat aircraft on dramatically accelerated timelines,” said Steve Nordlund, Boeing Phantom Works vice president and general manager. “We are committed to a future where our platforms are more modular and adaptable, our software is more modifiable and scalable, and where our customers have a common experience across all of our products – providing disruptive advantages from seabed to space.”

15 Sep 22. Future USNS Apalachicola (EPF-13) Completes Acceptance Trials.
Austal Limited (ASX:ASB) is pleased to announce that the future USNS Apalachicola (EPF-13) has successfully completed acceptance trials for the United States Navy.
Constructed at Austal USA’s Mobile Alabama shipyard, EPF-13 is the first Spearhead-class Expeditionary Fast Transport (EPF) ship with capabilities for V-22 Osprey flight operations and enhanced medical support. It is also the United States Navy’s largest ship with the capability to operate as an unmanned surface vessel (USV).
Austal Limited Chief Executive Officer Paddy Gregg said the completion of acceptance trials for EPF-13 was a significant milestone, being the first surface vessel constructed by Austal USA with autonomous capability.
“Apalachicola is the first EPF we have delivered with autonomous capability that demonstrates new technologies that will ultimately enable unmanned missions for the United States Navy, Mr Gregg said.
“We’re very pleased with the performance of the ship, which was rigorously tested over several months by the Navy and teams from Austal USA, L3Harris and General Dynamics.
“We’re looking forward to seeing what she can do when she commences operations with Military Sealift Command following delivery later this calendar year.”
During acceptance trials comprehensive testing is conducted on the ship’s major systems and equipment to demonstrate their successful operation and mission readiness. The United States Navy’s Board of Inspection and Survey participates throughout the trials to validate the quality of construction and compliance with Navy requirements.
In addition to builder’s trials, EPF 13 went to sea five times over the past several months allowing Austal USA, L3Harris and General Dynamics Mission Systems to test and analyze not only her typical ship systems but those resulting from autonomous design and construction contract modifications required by the Navy to establish EPF 13 as an autonomous prototype.
The work included installation of a perception and situation awareness suite, an autonomy controller, an autonomous machinery control system, and automation enhancements to the machinery plant improving hull, mechanical, and electrical reliability. The enhancements will allow EPF-13 to operate autonomously for up to 30 days while retaining the capability for manned operation.
USNS Apalachicola is planned for delivery by the end of the calendar year and will be the 13th EPF ship to join the United States Military Sealift Command’s global fleet. Austal USA is currently constructing Cody (EPF-14) and Point Loma (EPF-15) and is under contract to build EPF-16. Each of these ships are being constructed to “Flight II” specifications that incorporate Role 2E medical capability and capabilities to support V-22 Osprey flight operations. (Source: ASD Network)
13 Sep 22. MDL launches Indian Navy’s fifth P17A Nilgiri-class frigate Taragiri. Project 17A involves the construction of seven ships, of which four are being built by MDL and three units by GRSE. The Indian Ministry of Defence (MoD) has revealed that Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders (MDL) has launched the fifth Nilgiri-class frigate Taragiri (YD 12653) for the Indian Navy. The frigate’s launch was marked by a ceremony attended by officials from the Indian Navy and MoD.
Taragiri was launched by the Navy Wives Welfare Association (NWWA) Western Region (WA) president Charu Singh, who also named this vessel after a hill range in the Himalayas in India.
Western Naval Command flag officer commanding-in-chief (FOC-in-C) vice-admiral Ajendra Bahadur Singh said: “Taragiri will surely add to Indian Navy’s forte as and when it makes its way into the blue waters.”
The frigate was launched in collaboration with the Indian Navy’s in-house organisation Warship Design Bureau (WDB), which is responsible for designing the vessels of the class.
After this launch, Taragiri will join its other two sister ships at MDL to undergo outfitting activities before its final delivery to the Indian Navy.
Taragiri is one of the four Nilgiri-class stealth vessels to be constructed by MDL under the Indian Navy’s Project 17A.
The other three ships under this programme are being built by India’s Garden Reach Shipbuilders & Engineers (GRSE).
The seven P17A frigates are upgraded variants of the P17 Shivalik-class frigates. The new vessels will have improved stealth features, weapons, sensors and platform management systems. Around 75% of orders for systems and equipment of the P17A ships are being provided by indigenous companies, including micro, small and medium enterprises. This is a major boost for India’s ‘Atma Nirbhar Bharat’ and ‘Make in India’ initiatives. Earlier this year, MDL laid the keel for the seventh P17A frigate, Y-12654, in Mumbai. 13 Sep 22. Patria delivers last upgraded Hamina-class craft to Finnish Navy. The company is under contract to provide mid-life upgrade (MLU) to the four Hamina-class ships. Patria has handed over the fourth and last modernised Hamina-class fast attack missile boat, Pori, to the Finnish Navy in Upinniemi, Finland. The newly delivered vessel had already completed its sea acceptance trials (SAT) prior to its commissioning. The SAT was conducted earlier this year, from spring until summer. The company is under contract to provide mid-life upgrade (MLU) support for all the Hamina-class vessels. Patria was the prime contractor, lead system integrator and designer for this MLU contract awarded in 2017. Associated work on all four vessels was carried out between 2018 and 2022. Work included the installation of new torpedo and surface-to-surface missile systems, along with the upgradation of the surface-to-air missile systems. This capability will now allow the four vessels to counter threats in the air, on the surface, and underwater. This large-scale programme intended to provide new and improved capabilities to the Finnish Navy to counter advanced maritime threats and attacks at sea. The overhaul has further ensured that the navy can protect the nation’s sea lines as well as monitor and secure territorial integrity. Furthermore, the planned life cycle of the Hamina-class missile boats has now been extended to 2030, along with the required lifecycle update support.
Patria Finland Division Navy business area leader Veli-Pekka Heinonen said: “The modernisation and MLU of Hamina-Class illustrate well Patria’s advanced system integration capability. In addition to overhaul and life cycle extension, one of the main goals in Hamina-Class modernisation has been the development of anti-submarine warfare (ASW) performance. As part of the new capabilities, Patria supplied the Hamina-Class ships with the new innovative training target system it has developed, which enables ASW training in a flexible and the most cost-effective way.” (Source: naval-technology.com)
13 Sep 22. QEN’s first Al Zubarah-class ship and first OPV arrive in Qatar. Both vessels have been constructed under Qatari MoD’s national naval acquisition programme. The Qatari Emiri Navy’s (QEN) first offshore patrol vessel (OPV) Musherib and the lead Al Zubarah-class corvette Al Zubarah have arrived in Qatar.
It was announced by Italian shipbuilding company Fincantieri.
The arrival of the two vessels was marked by a welcome ceremony held at the Umm Al Houl Base in Al Wakrah, Qatar on 12 September.
The event was attended by Qatar Emir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al-Thani, Qatar Deputy Prime Minister and Defence Affairs Minister Dr Khalid bin Mohamed Al Attiyah along with other officials from the QEN and representatives from the ship’s company.
As part of this ceremony, Fincantieri also inaugurated its new office, Fincantieri Services Doha, to handle the activities in Qatar.
In a tweet, Fincantieri said: “Fincantieri, represented by the President Graziano and the CEO and GM Folgiero, participated in the celebration for the arrival in Qatar of the corvette #AlZubarah and the OPV Musherib. Fincantieri Services Doha offices have also been inaugurated, which will follow the Group’s activities in the area.”
Construction of Al Zubarah and Musherib was carried out at the company’s shipyards in Italy’s Riva Trigoso and Muggiano (La Spezia), respectively.
Delivery of Musherib took place in February this year, while Al Zubarah was delivered in October last year.
The two vessels have been constructed under Qatari Ministry of Defence’s national naval acquisition programme.
A €4bn contract under this programme was awarded to Fincantieri in 2016. It included the construction of seven vessels, including two OPVs, four corvettes and one landing platform dock (LPD).
Both Al Zubarah-class corvettes and OPVs can perform a variety of missions, including surveillance, sea rescue and fighting with enemy ships. (Source: naval-technology.com)

15 Sep 22. US Navy decommissions littoral combat ship USS Coronado. LCS 4 was commissioned in April 2014 at Naval Air Station North Island. The US Navy has decommissioned its Independence-class littoral combat ship, USS Coronado (LCS 4), at Naval Base San Diego in California.
The decommissioning of the vessel was marked by a ceremony conducted on 14 September. LCS 4 was constructed by Austal USA at its facility in Mobile, Alabama. It entered service with the US Navy in April 2014 at Naval Air Station North Island. After decommissioning, LCS 4 will now be designated as ‘Out of Commission, In Reserve (OCIR)’ asset, while its crew will receive follow-on orders for resuming new assignments.
Expeditionary Strike Group 3 commander rear admiral Wayne Baze said: “Today, we recognise the great contribution Coronado and its crew made in developing the operational concepts foundational to current configuration and deployment of LCS.”
LC4 was the third US Navy vessel to bear this name.
During its over eight years of service, USS Coronado carried out various missions, such as deployment with the US Seventh Fleet, integration with carrier strike group, participating in exercises, and conducting joint manoeuvres with other US Navy warships.
It served as an operational unit for defending the country’s maritime freedom.
LCS 4 and its crew also served as a test and training ship, showcasing the US Navy’s operational configuration and deployment capabilities.
In 2017, the vessel was deployed to the Indo-Pacific region for a 14-month rotational deployment, alongside allied and partner nation forces.
Furthermore, this Independence-variant LCS was also a proven platform to provide tactical advantages. It was used to demonstrate the LCS crewed-uncrewed teaming concepts in targeting exercises with an MQ-8B Fire Scout uncrewed aerial system. (Source: naval-technology.com)
