28 Jul 22. Sensor specialist HENSOLDT expands capacities. New laboratory building opened at the Ulm site. The sensor solutions provider HENSOLDT is investing in expanding its capacities to meet the growth of its business. At its Ulm site, HENSOLDT opened a new laboratory building in the presence of Ulm’s mayor Gunter Czisch, which was constructed with an investment volume of approximately 20 m euros. The building houses laboratories and integration areas on approximately 3,500 square metres, where 100 radar and reconnaissance experts will work. After hiring more than 500 employees in the past two years, the company plans to hire approximately 200 new employees and increase the number of apprenticeships this year.

“HENSOLDT supplies sensor solutions to the Bundeswehr, but also to international customers who rely on our support in the face of new threats,” says Peter Schlote, Head of the Radar Division, and the Ulm site. “That’s why it’s enormously important that we continue to drive technology development and expand our system capacities at the same time. Our investment in new system solutions and development laboratories is therefore an indispensable part of our growth strategy.”

In the new building at the Ulm site, software and electronic assemblies for the new radar of the Eurofighter as well as for KALAETRON Integral, a product family from the field of signals intelligence, are developed and tested. Technical building facilities ensure the confidentiality of development work as stipulated by the customers. In both areas, state-of-the-art laboratories and test facilities are the prerequisite for the shortening of delivery times increasingly demanded by customers.

At HENSOLDT’s Ulm site, around 3,000 employees are involved in the development and production of radars and electronic warfare systems. A large proportion of the employees are engineers and technicians, and around 240 trainees and dual students are undergoing training.

27 Jul 22. Custom Electronics, Inc. (CEI), a globally recognized manufacturer of top-quality mica paper capacitors and tailored high-voltage assemblies, has opened a new manufacturing facility in Oneonta, NY.  CEI’s announcement follows the successful release of its CMP2500 portable battery system and launch of new digital display brand Epidaur Digital. This new site marks CEI’s third location based in Oneonta, and enables the company to respond to increased manufacturing demands.

CEI’s newest space houses the manufacturing and assembly of the company’s renowned batteries and battery components, most notably the recently released CMP2500 battery solution. Ideal for military and defense field and training applications, including charging of drones, running simulations, targetry and silent watch, the CMP2500 portable battery is designed to provide power whenever and wherever it is needed. Following a successful year, the brand has noted growth significant to require a new manufacturing location.

25 Jul 22. Collins Aerospace begins $14m expansion on Iowa facility. Collins Aerospace has officially started construction on the $14m expansion of its additive manufacturing facility in West Des Moines, Iowa, US. The 9,000ft² expansion will provide additional space to accommodate more 3D metal printers, in addition to the three systems already available on-site.

According to Collins Aerospace, the first new printer will provide around eight times the build volume of the existing printers.

It is expected to be fully operational towards the end of next year.

Collins Aerospace West Des Moines site lead Renee Begley said: “With this expansion, we will significantly increase our additive manufacturing capacity and enhance our ability to produce more parts faster for our airframe and engine customers.

“Compared to traditional manufacturing, additive offers several key benefits as the optimised designs not only reduce cost but can also reduce delivery lead times dramatically.

“Additive also allows us to produce parts that are much lighter, enabling reduced aircraft fuel consumption and reduced carbon emissions – a key to more sustainable flight.”

Collins’ 41,000ft² West Des Moines centre primarily focuses on the design and production of fuel nozzles for military and commercial aircraft.

The expansion of this centre will allow Collins to use new machines and enhance existing production capabilities.

This will further expand the company’s portfolio of metals, that can be used for engine components production at the site.

The company has additive manufacturing centres in Minnesota, Iowa, North Carolina and Singapore, along with an additive research centre in Connecticut, US.

In June 2022, the company opened a new additive manufacturing facility at its campus in Monroe, North Carolina, to support the production of different systems for next-generation aircraft.

28 Jul 22. First Félix Éboué-class OPV for French Navy starts sea trials. The first of six new Félix Éboué-class offshore patrol vessels (OPVs) on order for the French Navy has started its initial sea trials. First-of-class Auguste Bénébig (P 779) was put to sea for the first time from Socarenam’s facility in Saint-Malo, Brittany on 26 July, the shipbuilder announced on its LinkedIn account. The six OPVs, also known as the Patrouilleur d’Outre-Mer (POM) class, are being built under a contract awarded to a consortium comprising Socarenam and CNN MCO on 3 December 2019. Construction is taking place at Socarenam’s shipyards in Boulogne-sur-Mer in the north of France and Saint-Malo in Brittany. They are intended to replace the French Navy’s ageing P400-class patrol boats for operation in France’s overseas territories, with two each to be based in New Caledonia (Nouméa), French Polynesia (Papeete), and La Réunion (Pointe-des-Galets). 27 Jul 22. HMS Lancaster Departs for NATO Tasking After Year of Preparation by BAE. HMS Lancaster has today departed Portsmouth Naval Base, marking the completion of a period of maintenance and upgrades delivered by BAE Systems to optimise her for upcoming deployments. The Royal Navy Type 23 Frigate will now spend a brief period on NATO tasking ahead of further deployments. Like all Type 23s, HMS Lancaster is a highly versatile multi-role warship. In the past year, HMS Lancaster has undergone three major Fleet Time Support Periods (FTSPs) with BAE Systems in order to optimise and upgrade her capabilities, including:

Upgrades to the bridge, messes and crew accommodation facilities

The swap-out of two diesel generators simultaneously, a rare and significant undertaking which was completed ahead of schedule

New capabilities across communications, navigation and defence systems

Planned maintenance of various mechanical systems such as valves and propellers alongside emergent tasks such as hull maintenance and deck repairs

“In preparation for her tasking our teams have delivered three highly successful FTSPs,” commented Dean Kimber, Head of Asset Management for BAE Systems’ Maritime Services business.

“We are immensely proud of the work we have done. The hard work and expertise of the team throughout these major maintenance and upgrade periods alongside their agile responses to changing requirements and emergent work, means HMS Lancaster will leave Portsmouth optimised for any role the Royal Navy should require of her.

”All at BAE Systems extend their thanks to the ship’s staff for their close collaboration and input throughout HMS Lancaster’s support periods and wish the crew a safe and successful onward journey.” (Source: ASD Network)

27 Jul 22. Navantia delivers RSNF’s second Avante 2200 vessel Al-Diriyah. The 104m-long Al-Diriyah has been constructed under RSNF’s Avante 2200 programme. Spanish shipbuilding company Navantia has delivered the second of five vessels, Al-Diriyah, under the Royal Saudi Navy Forces’ (RSNF) Avante 2200 programme. The vessel’s delivery was marked by a ceremony hosted by Navantia at its shipyard in San Fernando, Cádiz, Spain.

It was attended by various officials from the RSNF and Spanish Navy, including RSNF commander vice-admiral Fahad Bin Abdullah Al-Ghofaily and Spanish Navy procurement director admiral Aniceto Rosique.

During the ceremony, a Joint Inspection Commission comprising of members from the RSNF and Navantia went on board the ship to conduct a mandatory inspection in accordance with the military protocol.

Following the inspection, the vessel’s flag was raised and command was transferred to the commanding officer of Al-Diriyah.

Delivery of vessel 547 or Al-Diriyah comes after three years of its first steel cut, which was performed in May 2019.

Constructed at Navantia’s shipyard in the Bay of Cadiz, the vessel has completed sea trials in the Bay of Cadiz.

Al-Ghofaily said: “Alsarawat and many other RSNF ambitious acquisition programmes are a clear commitment of the RSNF toward fulfilling strategic goals of kingdom vision 2030 by creating a new era of sophisticated Naval capabilities to face challenges of today and tomorrow while increasing strength of national domestic military industry.

“Since last January, the ship has gone through intensive sea trials to become, today, ready and fully capable to perform her assigned missions protecting the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia and defending its interests.”

In November 2018, Navantia was awarded a contract to construct five Avante 2200 corvettes for the RSNF. The company recently handed over the first Avante 2200 vessel, HMS Al Jubail, to the RSNF. (Source: naval-technology.com)

22 Jul 22. US Navy accepts delivery of Independence-class Santa Barbara LCS. Commissioning of LCS 32 is expected to take place in the second quarter of FY 2023. The US Navy has taken delivery of its Independence-class littoral combat ship (LCS), the future USS Santa Barbara (LCS 32), from Austal USA. The vessel was formally accepted by the service on 21 July at the company’s shipyard in Mobile, Alabama, US.

Delivery of the future USS Santa Barbara comes after the completion of its at-sea acceptance trials on 3 June. LCS programme manager captain Andy Gold said: “Today marks a significant milestone in the life of the future USS Santa Barbara, building off of ship over ship improvements that Austal has achieved in the construction of Independence-variant littoral combat ships.

“This ship and her crew will play an essential role in missions supporting our nation’s maritime strategy.”

The new vessel will now sail towards its homeport in San Diego, California. Commissioning of LCS 32 is expected to take place in the second quarter of fiscal year (FY) 2023. Christened in October last year, LCS 32 is the third vessel to be named after the city of Santa Barbara located in southwestern California. (Source: naval-technology.com)

28 Jul 22. India flight-testing new Tejas Mk 1A variant. India has been conducting flight trials of the Mk 1A variant of its domestically developed light combat aircraft (LCA) Tejas. Speaking to Janes, the manufacturer, Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL), confirmed that the first Mk 1A entered flight-testing in April. According to a second HAL source, the aircraft under flight-testing is SP25, a Final Operational Clearance (FOC) block aircraft that was manufactured by HAL in 2020.

“This aircraft has been modified to the Mk 1A standard and will serve as the test platform for the production line of Mk 1As,” the HAL source said.

The flight trials have not been made public because HAL said the flights are part of production activities. “We are geared towards ensuring that the aircraft are delivered to the Indian Air Force (IAF) on time and on schedule by 2024,” the HAL source said. (Source: Janes)

25 Jul 22. Nigerian L-39s upgraded in Czech Republic return home. Aero Vodochody has concluded maintenance work on three Nigerian Air Force (NAF) L-39ZA jets, which have recently returned home. After a two-year overhaul, the three aircraft departed the Czech Republic for Nigeria on 17 July, Key Publishing reports. In 2020, the three L-39ZAs were transported to the Czech Republic for a general overhaul and avionics upgrade at the Aero Vodochody facility in Prague. US company Genesys Aerosystems is upgraded the avionics that includes a Czech-designed Speel head up display (HUD). The work was carried out in conjunction with a small NAF team. Although the aircraft were expected back in the country before the third quarter of 2021, the process was delayed due to the covid-19 pandemic. The Nigerian Air Force has refurbished a number of L-39ZAs itself. For example, in November 2020, two refurbished aircraft were handed back to the NAF after local work and several more were scheduled for a life extension programme (LEP), which involves in-depth inspection of main and crucial components of the airframe, engine, avionics and escape system of the aircraft. The NAF has been taking over maintenance and repair work on its L-39ZAs, Alpha Jets, F-7Mi fighters and C-130H Hercules transports. The NAF flies around nine L-39ZAs, out of two dozen it received in 1986 and 1987. (Source: https://www.defenceweb.co.za/)

PLANT CLOSURES, JOB LOSSES AND STRIKES

25 Jul 22. Boeing defense workers to strike in St. Louis area over pay issues. The union representing nearly 2,500 employees at three Boeing Co (BA.N) defense locations in the St. Louis area said on Sunday the workers rejected the company’s defense contract offer and will strike at the locations starting Aug. 1.

“Boeing previously took away a pension from our members, and now the company is unwilling to adequately compensate our members’ 401(k) plan,” the International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers union said in a statement. It added that union workers will not accept a contract that is not fair and equitable. “We will not allow this company to put our members’ hard-earned retirements in jeopardy,” the union added. Workers at the three plants in Missouri and Illinois build the F-15, F-18, T-7A trainer, and the MQ-25 unmanned refueler.

Boeing said Sunday it “is disappointed with Sunday’s vote to reject a strong, highly competitive offer. We are activating our contingency plan to support continuity of operations in the event of a strike.”

Boeing had offered an additional $3,000 ratificationbonus if workers had approved the three-year contract by Sunday rather than an earlier proposal to make additional $1,000 annual contributions to workers 401(k) plans. Boeing’s 401(k) offer included a company match of workers contributions up to 10% of workers’ salaries along with an automatic contribution of 2% for 2023 and 2024. The current contract is set to expire on Monday, July 25. (Source: Google/Reuters)

26 Jul 22. SAPS to establish specialist infrastructure protection units. Minister of Police Bheki Cele has stated that in light of the theft of the theft of cables and other infrastructure, there is an intention is to establish specialised multi-disciplinary Economic Infrastructure Units (EIUs) upon the completion of a work study investigation (WSI) that “will determine the organisational placement, functional responsibilities, as well as the required human and physical resources.”

Cele, responding in June to a written parliamentary question posed by Freedom Front Plus leader Pieter Groenewald, stated that while awaiting the finalisation of the WSI, multi-disciplinary Economic Infrastructure Task Teams will be established. These will consist of intelligence operatives and operational information analysts; experienced and trained operatives within the visible policing and operations environment; experienced investigators from general and organised crime investigation, as well as the Directorate for Priority Crime Investigation (DPCI); and experts from biology, ballistics, chemistry, scientific units and the Criminal Record Centre.

These Task Teams are to be established in 18 identified districts, across all provinces. These Task Teams will be piloted for a period not exceeding two years and reviewed after a period of 18 months.

Last year, political parties in Gauteng petitioned Parliament to tighten laws to deal ruthlessly with criminals destroying infrastructure belonging to entities such as Transnet, Eskom, Telkom and Rand Water.

The parties wanted to lobby the national government to set up a special rapid response team of highly trained police officers to deal with organised criminal syndicates who seek to undermine the economic security of the province.

The Gauteng Transport Authority reported rail infrastructure damages of over R170 m in 2020 and it is said that 80% of the province’s rail stations are now in ruins.

Between July 2021 to April 2022, 1 456 cases of vandalism and cable theft have been reported to City Power in Johannesburg alone, which cost the city R24-m in damages and repairs. This is not even factoring in the economic cost that rolling blackouts cause to businesses and homes. City Power is already spending R100 m annually on security measures.

Tabling the police budget vote in parliament in May this year, Cele said President Cyril Ramaphosa in his state of nation address said the ongoing vandalism and theft of economic infrastructure has damaged confidence and severely constrained economic growth, investment and job creation.

Cele said task teams will be established in identified hotspots to fight essential-infrastructure crimes, including theft of copper cables and illegal mining.

“Task teams will also tackle essential infrastructure crimes such as the tampering, damaging or destroying of infrastructure related to energy, transport, water, sanitation and communication services. Critical infrastructure crimes will also be on their radar, such as the attacking, damaging or theft of fuel pipelines and related crimes,” Cele said.

Ramaphosa earlier this year said the government has established specialised multidisciplinary units to address economic sabotage, extortion at construction sites and the vandalism of infrastructure.
