20 Jul 22. BAE Systems has revealed more details regarding their huge new shipbuilding facility in Glasgow.
I recently reported that the wet basin at Govan will be drained, and a covered build hall will be constructed on the site, allowing for later Type 26 frigates to be built indoors.
After construction, according to the person I spoke to, ships will be moved onto a barge and lowered into the water. It is hoped that Type 26 ships 4 to 8 will be built in this facility, with the first three being put together outdoors. HMS Glasgow is in build now and is shown below, she is being put together on the hard standing, adjacent to the wet basin area after she was built in sections in the existing build hall and joined together.
I previously reported that BAE Systems submitted a planning application that would see the ‘Ship Block Outfit Hall’ at its Govan shipyard in Glasgow expanded out to Govan road, that plan is no longer the preferred option. From what I understand, the process was being held up by older buildings on the site with historical significance. The new drydock/build hall would allow ships to be built entirely indoors, protecting them against the elements and would form part of an effort to modernise the yard to make it more attractive to future orders.
The following information comes from the firms Govan Assembly Hall planning consultation.
Project Background
In their Govan Assembly Hall planning consultation, BAE say that at present, full ships longer than 75 metres cannot be constructed undercover at Govan, something which is a major constraint to their business. Shown below is the current arrangement, the ‘SBOH’ is the facility in which ship hull sections are currently built before being moved outside and welded together
“As such, BAE Systems intends to develop a new ship building hall which is capable of meeting the United Kingdom’s ship building requirements. This necessitates the construction of a new ship building facility in Govan, one that will allow for at least two ships to be built simultaneously under cover and in single hull format.
The opportunity to provide a new modern ship building hall of this nature would allow BAE Systems to adopt improved shipbuilding techniques together with improved construction access and state of the art, dedicated, on-site office and amenities accommodation.
It would also significantly improve ship building capability in Govan, which in turn will safeguard employment for the ship building and affiliated trades in the Glasgow city region and secure continued investment in training and education, in innovative technologies and in BAE Systems’ supply chain.
Indicative Visualisation of Proposed Ship Building Assembly Hall
There are various constraints and challenges affecting the BAE Systems Govan site and BAE Systems has undertaken extensive site option and feasibility studies to determine how their requirement for a new ship building facility can be accommodated within their Govan campus. To this end, BAE Systems appointed a project team in January 2022 to undertake detailed site options testing with the aim of identifying an optimal and viable location for the development of a new ship building facility at BAE Govan, taking into account the operational requirements for a new facility and balancing these against other considerations, including land use planning matters.”
Wet Basin Works
BAE say that to create a platform for the proposed building, a new structure will be constructed across the entrance to the existing shipyard wet basin.
Proposed Infill of Existing BAE Govan Shipyard Wet Basin
“The wet basin will be slowly de-watered with water pumped out using a barge with filtration and screening equipment, discharging the treated water into the Clyde. When the water is removed, the wet basin will be filled to the required ground level.”
Proposed Ship Building Hall and Supporting Accommodation
The firm state that the proposed shipbuilding hall will occupy part of the existing shipyard wet basin and will provide accommodation to allow for at least two ships to be built simultaneously under cover and in single hull format.
This will remove the need for the outdoor assembly of ships as is currently the case.
In terms of dimensions, the proposed shipbuilding hall will be approximately 81 metres wide, 170 metres long and 49 metres high to the building ridge line.
Indicative Visualisation of Proposed Ship Building Assembly Hall
BAE add that their planning application will be supported by detailed architectural and Landscape and Visual Impact Assessment information, “demonstrating how the proposed facility will sit within the site and considering key views to and from the shipyard”.
Indicative Visualisation of Proposed Ship Building Assembly Hall
“The proposals have been designed considering views from Govan Conservation Area and the relationship with the Category A listed Ward Complex building. The materials and colours of the proposed building will be chosen to fit with the BAE Govan campus.”
What next?
BAE say that subject to further discussions with Glasgow City Council and other stakeholders it is proposed to submit a planning application in Summer 2022.
“This planning application will include supporting information, including an Environmental Impact Assessment. These submissions will provide information on a range of subjects, including design, transport, ecology, flooding, drainage, built heritage, noise and visual impact. If our planning application is approved by Glasgow City Council, it is anticipated that work on site would commence in January 2023.” (Source: News Now/Forces.net)

15 Jul 22. Canada finalises acquisition of two Airbus A330-200 aircraft for RCAF. Delivery of the two aircraft to Canada is expected to take place in late next year. The Canadian Department of National Defence (DND) has finalised a contract to acquire two Airbus A330-200 aircraft for the Royal Canadian Air Force (RCAF). The $77.866m (C$102m) contract to procure two A330-200 aircraft, manufactured in 2015, was awarded to International AirFinance (IAFC). The two aircraft will replace and renew the strategic tanker transport capability (STTC) offered by the existing fleet of RCAF’s CC-150 Polaris aircraft, which is in service since 1992.
Both aircraft will later become part of the STTC fleet.
With the latest procurement, the number of aircraft in the STTC fleet is now expected to be six. The STTC project falls under Canada’s defence policy, called ‘Strong, Secure, Engaged (SSE).’ It aims to replace and renew the RCAF’s air-to-air refuelling (AAR) capability for the next generation.
Canadian DND minister Anita Anand said: “The Government of Canada is committed to providing Canadian Armed Forces with the equipment they need at the best value for money. We look forward to accepting these two aircraft as they represent an important first step in eventually replacing capability currently provided by CC150 Polaris fleet.”
Delivery of the two aircraft to Canada is expected in late next year.
These aircraft will arrive in commercial configuration and will be initially used for passenger/cargo roles.
Airbus Defence and Space will later modify the two aircraft in accordance with the military specifications required to serve as a multi-role aircraft within the STTC fleet.
Additionally, the new aircraft will transport the Canadian Government’s personnel, as well as play a crucial role in providing AAR, strategic airlift, aeromedical evacuations and strategic capabilities. (Source: airforce-technology.com)
15 Jul 22. Sikorsky delivers seventh CH-53K helicopter to USMC. The company is planning to deliver two more CH-53K helicopters later this year. Lockheed Martin company Sikorsky has handed over a new CH-53K King Stallion heavy-lift helicopter to the US Marine Corps (USMC).
The company has delivered this aircraft ahead of the stipulated contract schedule. Built at Sikorsky’s digital factory, this is the third low-rate initial production (LRIP) helicopter and the first CH-53K from the Lot 2 LRIP contract awarded by the US Navy in 2019. It is also the seventh aircraft delivered to the overall fleet. The newly delivered CH-53K King Stallion joins the existing six helicopters that are currently in operation at Marine Corps Air Station New River in Jacksonville, North Carolina. Sikorsky is manufacturing the CH-53K helicopters at its headquarters in Stratford, Connecticut, using advanced technology and digital production processes. Currently, this high-tech production line is active with seven aircraft in build on final assembly.
Sikorsky CH-53K programme director Bill Falk said: “This Connecticut-built CH-53K is a credit to our employees and their skills embracing digital tools and other advanced technologies to continue Sikorsky’s legacy of building modern, safe, reliable rotorcraft.
“Our supply chain supports the active production line as we prepare to deliver two more CH-53K helicopters later this year.
“We look forward to continuing our progress toward next year’s full rate production decision.”
In April this year, the USMC declared initial operational capability for the CH-53K helicopter. It is the only heavy-lift helicopter that will remain in production through 2032 and beyond. (Source: naval-technology.com)

19 Jul 22. Irish Naval Service decommissions three patrol ships as part of modernisation effort. The Irish Naval Service (INS) has formally retired three patrol vessels from service in a move that will temporarily reduce the fleet’s inventory to six ships. The service’s 80.8 m helicopter-capable fleet flagship LÉ Eithne (P 31) and two 62.6 m Peacock-class coastal patrol ships, LÉ Orla (P 41) and LÉ Ciara (P 42), were formally decommissioned during a ceremony held at the INS headquarters in Haulbowline, County Cork, on 7 July. The INS was forced to place all three vessels in reserve from mid-2019 because of continuing manning issues. Eithne was reactivated for Covid-19 virus testing in Cork in March 2020, but was then placed back in reserve from June 2020. All three vessels have served in the INS for more than 30 years. An Irish Department of Defence (DoD) spokesperson told Janes that it is weighing up options regarding the disposal of the three vessels post-decommissioning. (Source: Janes)

“The enhancement of 2nd Division helps prepare our Army, as part of the joint force, to better respond to our contemporary and potential future demands” LTGEN Stuart said.
“The command will improve Army’s responsiveness, resilience ability to rapidly scale to do what only an Army can
“The unity, a sense of purpose and focus by a single command will support our land forces to achieve the tasks that are asked of us by government.”
The Chief of Army’s remarks were reiterated by Commander 2nd Division Major General David Thomae, who noted that the independent functional command will reinforce the Division’s contribution to Australia’s national resilience.
“2nd Division is conducting operations and training for contingencies every day, but is uniquely made up of predominantly a part-time workforce,” MAJGEN Thomae said.
“These members often balance commitments to a civilian job while dedicating their time and skills to ensure Australia’s interests are supported at home and abroad.”
According to Defence, the 2nd Division’s role in the Australian Defence Force has been especially highlighted with the recent domestic operations as well as the ongoing patrolling of Australia’s northern border. Their mission is to continue generating land capabilities, while overseeing assigned domestic operations.
