12 Jul 22. Austal begins construction of US Navy’s Navajo-class T-ATS 11.

Delivery of the first steel ship is expected to take place by late 2024. Austal USA has officially commenced the construction of the US Navy’s Navajo-class towing, salvage and rescue ship (T-ATS 11).

The beginning of construction of the company’s first steel ship was marked by a ceremony.

It was attended by officials including US Navy programme executive officer for ships rear admiral Thomas Anderson and US representative for Alabama first district Congressman Jerry Carl.

Austal USA New Construction vice-president Dave Growden said: “It seems like only yesterday we were breaking ground on our steel shipbuilding facility and here we are, a little over a year, beginning construction on our first steel ship.

“Our shipbuilders are excited to demonstrate how effectively their talent and our proven processes translate to steel production.”

Austal will carry out associated work at its new 170,000ft² steel production facility, housing computerised and robotic steel processing equipment.

According to Austal, the company will use its experience in ship manufacturing processes and innovative techniques, including modular construction, lean manufacturing principles and moving assembly lines.

The T-ATS modules will be built in this steel production facility. Once manufactured, the modules will be transported to the final assembly hall for integration.

Austal is expected to deliver the vessel T-ATS 11 by late 2024.

Last year in October, Austal received an additional contract to design and construct two Navajo-class ships T-ATS 11 and 12 for the US Navy.

The US Navy’s T-ATS vessels are being constructed to provide various capabilities to support US fleet operations, including rescue, salvage and ocean-going tug. T-ATS will be a common hull, multi-mission platform designed to tow heavy ships. Recently, Austal secured a detailed design and construction contract for the US Navy’s auxiliary floating dry dock medium. (Source: naval-technology.com)

12 Jul 22. HII marks key construction milestone for US Navy’s John F Kennedy. Huntington Ingalls Industries’ Newport News Shipbuilding (HII-NNS) has achieved a milestone in systems and compartment construction of the US Navy’s John F Kennedy (CVN 79). This milestone marks a significant step towards the delivery of the vessel, which is expected in 2024.

The company has turned over the 1,000th compartment of the 2,615 total spaces to the crew of the US Navy’s second Ford-class aircraft carrier CVN 79.

The company has also finished work on electrical and engineering spaces, allowing sailors assigned to the pre-commissioning unit to increase their training on the ship.

New Construction Aircraft Carrier Programmes CVN 78 and CVN 79 vice-president Lucas Hicks said: “This is about equipping our sailors with the most advanced aircraft carrier ever built for the US Navy.

“We are proud to execute for the customer, and finalise the remaining equipment, systems and compartments that will bring us closer to delivering the ship to the Navy.”

The NNS division is also working on the construction of the US Navy’s two other Ford-class aircraft carriers USS Enterprise (CVN 80) and Doris Miller (CVN 81).

Separately, the US Navy’s 12th San Antonio-class amphibious transport dock Fort Lauderdale (LPD 28) has sailed towards its commissioning site in Fort Lauderdale, Florida. (Source: naval-technology.com)

11 Jul 22. USS Gunston Hall ship undergoes maintenance availability in Denmark. The ship’s arrival in Copenhagen aims to bolster ties with a key Nato allied nation. The US Navy’s Whidbey Island-class dock landing ship (LSD) USS Gunston Hall (LSD 44) is undergoing a mid-deployment voyage repair (MDVR) in Denmark.

The ship, along with the 22nd Marine Expeditionary Unit (MEU) personnel, reached Copenhagen on 8 July.

The scheduled maintenance availability period, or MDVR, allows the vessels to perform corrective and preventative maintenance that cannot be completed while the ship is at the sea.

Additionally, the MDVR ensures that the ship remains mechanically ready throughout the remainder deployment period.

Gunston Hall commanding officer commander Beth Nelson said: “We are excited for the privilege to visit Denmark and experience the local culture and cuisine while making necessary repairs and upkeep to the ship.

“Additionally, our marines look forward to time on shore conducting necessary training to maintain their proficiency.”

The ship’s deployment to the city also aims to strengthen relations with key Nato allied nations.

Gunston Hall participated in various operations and interoperability exercises with allied and partner countries including Hedgehog, Northern Viking 22, Neptune Shield and BALTOPS 22.

The Whidbey Island-class LSD was also deployed in the US Naval Forces Europe (NAVEUR) area of operations (AOR) for three-and-a-half months.

The embarked 22nd MEU and Kearsarge Amphibious Ready Group (ARG) are a part of the command and control (C2) of Task Force (TF) 61/2.

Apart from Gunston Hall, the ARG includes Wasp-class amphibious assault ship USS Kearsarge (LHD 3) and San-Antonio class amphibious transport dock ship USS Arlington (LPD 24). (Source: naval-technology.com)

08 Jul 22. Fincantieri delivers Qatar Navy’s second OPV Sheraouh.

The first OPV Musherib was delivered to QEN in January this year.

Fincantieri has delivered the Qatari Emiri Navy’s (QEN) second offshore patrol vessel (OPV) Sheraouh at the Muggiano (La Spezia) shipyard in Italy.

Delivery of the vessel was marked by a ceremony attended by Italian Defence Minister Lorenzo Guerini and Qatar Deputy Prime Minister and Defence Affairs Minister Dr Khalid bin Mohamed Al Attiyah.

The company is under contract to build two OPVs for the QEN under the Qatari Ministry of Defence’s national naval acquisition programme.

The €4bn ($4.06bn) programme also involves construction of four 100m-long corvettes and one landing platform dock (LPD).

In September 2020, Fincantieri launched the first OPV Musherib. It was handed over to the QEN in January this year.

The 63m-long, 9.2m-wide second OPV Sheraouh offers a maximum speed of 30 knots. It can accommodate around 38 crew members aboard.

The vessel can also operate a rigid hull inflatable boat using a crane located at the stern.

According to Fincantieri, the ships have been designed in accordance with the rules for naval ships classification (RINAMIL) for the fast patrol vessel.

The QEN’s two OPVs are flexible type of ships that can perform several functions including maritime combat and surveillance.

Furthermore, the propulsion system in the OPVs has four variable pitch propellers placed in line with a diesel propulsion engine.

Out of the four propellers, two are placed near the starboard, while the other two are to the left.

Earlier in April, Fincantieri delivered the second of the four Al Zubarah-class corvettes. The company also started the construction of amphibious vessel LPD in May. (Source: naval-technology.com)

11 Jul 22. Indian IAC INS Vikrant concludes fourth phase of sea trials.

Delivery of the aircraft carrier is aimed to take place by the end of this month. The Indian Ministry of Defence (MoD) has revealed that the first indigenous aircraft carrier (IAC) INS Vikrant has completed the fourth phase of sea trials.

The aircraft carrier underwent a series of integrated trials for the majority of the systems and equipment on board, including some aviation facilities’ complex equipment.

Delivery of the Indian Navy’s first IAC is expected towards the end of this month.

Following its delivery, the IAC will be commissioned into service in August.

In a press statement, the Indian Navy said: “The ship’s delivery is being targeted in end July 2022, followed by commissioning of the ship in Aug 2022 to commemorate ‘Azadi ka Amrit Mahotsav’.”

The latest trial phase comes after the third phase of sea trials, which were completed in January this year.

The IAC underwent its maiden sea trials in August 2021 and the second phase was concluded in October last year.

The three phases of sea trials involved endurance evaluation of the ship’s propulsion machinery, lifesaving appliances, deck machinery, electrical and electronic suites, as well as ship’s navigation and communication systems.

The Vikrant-class aircraft carrier INS Vikrant is the first IAC to be designed by the Indian Navy’s Directorate of Naval Design (DND).

The ship is being constructed by Cochin Shipyard (CSL) in Kochi, India.

With over 76% of indigenous content, the new aircraft carrier supports the Government of India’s (GOI) ‘Make in India’ and ‘AatmaNirbhar Bharat’ initiatives.

Furthermore, the associated work has led to the development of several ancillary industries, offering more than 2,000 job opportunities at CSL and around 12,000 in ancillary industries.

Once constructed, INS Vikrant will operate various aircraft including, MiG-29K, light combat aircraft (LCA), Kamov 31 helicopter and advanced light helicopter (ALH). (Source: naval-technology.com)

The Royal Netherlands Air Force (RNLAF) has commissioned a new Air Combat Command (ACC), reorganising its air command and control arrangements. This was marked by a ceremony, during which the RNLAF commander lieutenant general Dennis Luyt handed over the command banner to new ACC first commander commodore Johan van Deventer. The newly created ACC consists of two operational fighter bases at Leeuwarden in the North and Volkel in the South, as well as an Air Operations Control Station (AOCS) at Nieuw-Milligen in the centre of the Netherlands. Simultaneously, the RNLAF has redeployed four of its F-35 fighter jets to Volkel Air Base in the Netherlands, re-establishing the 313 Squadron as a fifth-generation fighter unit. The first four fifth-generation fighter jets landed at Volkel Air Base on 30 June.

Deventer said: “Within this new organisation we join combat capability of all our F-35s, F-16s, MQ-9s, air battle management, targeting and datalink management under one commander.

“We operate from three locations, with 13 squadrons, as one information-driven team within a new RNLAF command structure.

“By delegating responsibilities to lower levels, we increase our agility enabling quick adjustments to rapidly change the operational environment.”

Also called Netherlands’ Tiger Squadron, the 313 Squadron was temporarily deactivated as an F-16 squadron in December 2020.

After the deactivation, associated pilots and ground crews were converted to the fifth-generation F-35 aircraft at Leeuwarden Air Base.

With the latest redeployment of F-35s, the Volkel Air Base now has two squadrons with two types of fighter jets.

It includes the 313 Squadron flying the F-35s and the 312 Squadron flying the F-16 aircraft. The 312 Squadron will continue to fly F-16s for the next two years. Following the aircraft’s retirement, the squadron will convert to F-35s.(Source: airforce-technology.com)
