15 June 22. Naval Group lays keel for Royal Netherlands Navy’s second MCM vessel. The company is building 12 MCM vessels under the Belgian-Dutch rMCM programme.
company Naval Group has laid the keel for the Royal Netherlands Navy’s second of 12 mine countermeasure (MCM) platforms, HNLMS Vlissingen.
A keel-laying ceremony was held in Lanester, France.
It was attended by the Royal Netherlands Navy’s commander vice-admiral René Tas, Netherlands Defence Material Organisation’s director of projects commodore Harold Boekholt and Belgian officials.
The 12 vessels are being built under the Belgian-Dutch rMCM programme.
Apart from 12 vessels, this programme includes the integration of around 100 drones inside a toolbox to equip the MCM platforms.
The programme was awarded to Belgium Naval & Robotics, a consortium of Naval Group and ECA Group, after an international competition in 2019.
The keel for the first MCM vessel was laid in December last year.
Naval Group and Piriou joint venture, Kership has undertaken the production of all the MCM vessels that will be assembled in Lanester and Concarneau in France.
Once assembled, the vessels will be armed afloat by Piriou in Concarneau.
As the prime contractor, Naval Group is responsible for the vessels’ design, integration, testing and commissioning of the mission system, including combat and mine countermeasures systems.
Meanwhile, co-contractor ECA Group is working on the production of uncrewed drone systems at its factory in Ostend, Belgium.
Naval Group CEO Pierre Eric Pommellet said: “Together, we are preparing the future of mine countermeasures by sharing a common game-changing defence solution.”
The vessels’ maintenance will be conducted in Belgium by Naval Group Belgium in close coordination with the Belgian Navy, with Flanders Ship Repair providing assistance.
The 12m-long, 20t MCM vessels can embark and launch a combination of surface, underwater and aerial drones.
It can use an autonomous system for the detection, classification and neutralisation of mines. (Source: naval-technology.com)

10 June 22. SECNAV Names Future Arleigh Burke-class Destroyer USS J. William Middendorf. Secretary of the Navy (SECNAV) Carlos Del Toro announced today, during the Naval War College commencement, that future Arleigh Burke-class guided-missile destroyer DDG-138 will be named USS J. William Middendorf (DDG 138). The future USS J. William Middendorf will honor former Secretary of the Navy and U.S. Ambassador, J. William Middendorf II. The name selection follows the tradition of naming destroyers after U.S. naval leaders and heroes.
In 2020, former Secretary of the Navy Richard Spencer announced his intention to name a ship after Middendorf, but had not dedicated the name to an assigned hull number. Today, Del Toro assigns the name to DDG-138 which was appropriated in the fiscal year 2022 budget.
“I am pleased to honor Secretary Spencer’s previous decision to name a ship after Ambassador J. William Middendorf and I am incredibly proud to announce it here, at the Naval War College, during the commencement of our future leaders,” said Del Toro. “Middendorf’s spirit of innovation and questioning helped champion programs that are still defending our nation today. This namesake ship will continue to inspire that legacy.”
Middendorf was born in 1924, in Baltimore MD. Throughout 1944-1946, while serving in the Navy aboard landing craft support ship, USS LCS(L)(3)-53, he earned his Bachelor of Naval Science. After a discharge from Naval Service he earned an additional B.A. from Harvard University and then an M.B.A. from New York University. In 1969, he was appointed U.S. Ambassador to the Netherlands and continued in the position until 1973. He then served as Under Secretary of the Navy with an appointment from President Nixon. On April 8, 1974, Middendorf became the 62nd Secretary of the Navy. During his tenure as Secretary of the Navy, he championed the Trident submarine program, AEGIS Missile system, oversaw the creation of the famed Marine Corps Marathon, and was instrumental in the development of the F/A-18 Hornet. In addition to his career in public service, Middendorf is widely-respected philanthropist and an accomplished author, artist, and composer.
“I met with Middendorf recently, affirming my decision to move forward with the previous naming decision. His ongoing leadership and respect provides a worthy cause for the naming of a destroyer,” said Del Toro. “The men and women who will sail upon this vessel will undoubtedly be inspired and strengthened by legacy of the namesake, ultimately impacting actions and decisions that will further our nation and freedom across the globe”
Arleigh Burke-class destroyers, built around the Aegis Combat System, are the backbone of the U.S. Navy’s surface fleet providing protection to America around the globe. They incorporate stealth techniques, allowing these highly capable, multi-mission ships to conduct a variety of operations, from peacetime presence to national security, providing a wide range of warfighting capabilities in multi-threat air, surface and subsurface domains. These elements of sea power enable the Navy to defend American prosperity and prevent future conflict abroad. DDG 128 is part of the Flight III ships being built, starting in FY2016. (Source: US DoD)

13 June 22. The sharp end of the SA Air Force (SAAF) – Air Force Base (AFB) Makhado-based 2 Squadron and its Saab Gripen fighters – has been dormant for more than six months with, as yet, no date known or set for the Swedish-built jet fighters to take to the sky with South Africans in the cockpit. Making matters worse is the Gripen simulator is part and parcel of the not renewed maintenance and support contracts that Department of Defence (DoD) Head of Communication (HOC) Siphiwe Dlamini omitted to mention in his December statement advising the temporary grounding of South Africa’s Gripen fleet. The grounding was ascribed to a lack of funding along with maintenance and support contracts not being timeously renewed. defenceWeb, seeking an update on Gripen status, was told by Brigadier-General Mongezi Kweta, Director SAAF Corporate Services, through the SA National Defence Force (SANDF) Directorate: Corporate Communication (DCC), the “latest” user requirement specification (URS) utilised during negotiations for the Gripen contract includes the simulator. The one-star added “negotiation has been concluded” with “the process” in “the final phase awaiting final contract placement”. He did not answer this publication’s question on when a test flight can be expected.
The Gripens at AFB Makhado, also home to 85 Combat Flying School (CFS) and its Hawk Mk 120 lead-in fighter-trainers, is regarded as SAAF’s “fighter town” and the Swedish-built jets, according to Kweta, have been maintained “even during times of not having a contract”.
Flying, in his words “flights”, will resume “after final placement of the contract” and the ordering and delivery of “certain spares” is done.
On the issue of flying currency and instructor competency, Kweta said SAAF “processes and procedures” manage these aspects of flight operations, adding the “necessary control measures are applied when seamless transition is interrupted”.
He did not respond when asked if Gripen instructors would retain competency by way of going to another country where Gripens were in service. The latest Department of Defence (DoD) annual performance plan (APP) notes an increase to R144 m from the previous figure of R66 m for training and development in the air defence programme. This increase, the APP states, is “largely due to currency training for pilots that is done overseas” without details of aircraft types or in which countries.
