04 May 22. Davie Shipbuilding today welcomed the Halifax-class frigate HMCS TORONTO for a major Docking Work Period (DWP) program. The HMCS TORONTO is expected to enter the Lorne drydock at Davie in the coming weeks where it will spend several months before re-entering service for the Royal Canadian Navy (RCN). Considered the RCN’s backbone, the entire fleet of 12 Halifax-class frigates is undergoing major DWP designed to keep the vessels operational until at least 2040. While the HMCS TORONTO received several upgrades in 2015 under the Frigate Equipment Life Extension (FELEX) program, the current DWP will include major maintenance activities as well as a number of engineering changes. The HMCS TORONTO DWP is part of an initial $500m contract awarded to Davie to perform maintenance work on three frigates. HMCS TORONTO follows HMCS ST. JOHN’S, which has successfully undergone a major DWP at Davie and is due to return to service for the RCN this summer. (Source: PR Newswire)
03 May 22. Nautic Africa launches another Sentinel vessel for West Africa. Nautic Africa, a subsidiary of Paramount Maritime, has launched another 35 metre long Sentinel vessel, the MV Tuguemi, which will be deployed in the Gulf of Guinea region.
The vessel was christened at Hamlet Quay in Elliot Basin in Cape Town, marking the third launch of the 35 metre version of the Sentinel series.
As it is designed to operate in dangerous waters, the aluminium-hulled vessel features composite ballistic armour on its wheelhouse and main deck accommodation structure, while gun mounts and ballistic shields are fitted to offer coverage around the vessel. Wheelhouse protection is up to NATO STANAG Level II and deckhouse ballistic protection to STANAG Level I.
Powered by three Caterpillar C32 main engines each developing 1 193 kW and driving three propellers, the Sentinel has a range of 1 300 nautical miles at economical speed (top speed is nearly 30 knots). With a length of 35 metres, a beam of 7.5 metres and draught of 2 metres, the Sentinel has six cabins for both crew and security personnel.
The Sentinel’s 11×6 metre cargo deck can further accommodate 20 tons of cargo or a 20-foot shipping container. A 6.5 metre semi-rigid boat can also be launched via a davit.
“The launch of the 35 metre Sentinel Vessel, named the MV Tuguemi, is yet another milestone in our production of a world class product made proudly in Africa, for Africa,” said Paramount Maritime CEO Lee Connolly.
“Indeed, the ramifications of maritime piracy, including kidnappings and even assaults plague the whole of Africa’s trajectory, not just their points of origin. Rule of law in Gulf of Guinea (GoG) territorial waters and their associated blue economic zones has been routinely challenged and such crimes hit record-heights during the COVID-19 pandemic, which in turn exacerbated already-constrained supply chains across the continent”.
In February 2020 Nautic Africa launched a new 35 metre Sentinel vessel for Nigerian customer Hadnuvo Marine Ltd. The vessel, MV Khajan, was the first model of the new design in this class. A second 35 metre Sentinel, also for the Gulf of Guinea, was launched in February 2021. Nautic has over the last decade built a large number of Sentinel vessels for export customers.
Nautic Africa also announced that larger naval versions (40 metres and 47 metres) of the vessel have been made available due to rising interest from navies, and will be offered globally to bolster military and fishing patrol operations across EEZ waters. (Source: https://www.defenceweb.co.za/)
02 May 22. Naval Group launches French Navy’s first replenishment vessel.
The four new vessels will replace the French Navy’s Durance-class ships.
Naval Group has launched the first of four force replenishment vessels (Bâtiments Ravitailleurs de Force – BRF), Jacques Chevallier, for the French Navy.
The launch of the vessel was marked by a ceremony held in Saint-Nazaire, France.
Jacques Chevallier will now undergo a series of sea trials, which is expected to start later this year.
Delivery of the first vessel is anticipated to take place in the first half of 2023.
The four vessels are being developed under the FLOTLOG programme (Flotte Logistique) which comes within the Logistic Support Ship (LSS) programme.
The FLOTLOG programme is part of a Franco-Italian cooperation led by Organisation for Joint Armament Co-operation (Organisation Conjointe de Coopération en matière d’Armement or OCCAR).
OCCAR is leading the programme in collaboration with the French Defence Procurement Agency (DGA) and Italian Directorate of Naval Armaments (NAVARM).
In January 2019, Naval Group and Chantiers de l’Atlantique received a decade-long contract to build four replenishment vessels for the French Navy.
Naval Group CEO Pierre Éric Pommellet said: “It is also a new successful cooperation between Chantiers de l’Atlantique and Naval Group, which combine their skills in order to offer the DGA and the French Navy the best expertise in the civil and military sectors in the construction of ships of heavy tonnages.”
The 194m-long, 27.60m-wide logistic support vessel, Jacques Chevallier, is equipped with self-defence capabilities and will be used for carrying fuel, ammunition, food and spare parts.
The new vessel will carry up to 31,000t of load, which makes it the French Navy’s second heaviest ship, after the aircraft carrier Charles de Gaulle.
Featuring increased capabilities and modern equipment, the French Navy’s new vessels will replace the Durance-class ships.
The ships will allow France to conduct long-term operations in the ocean and support inter-allied operations. (Source: naval-technology.com)

The company moved New Jersey to the shipyard’s submarine pier with the help of tugboats. It will now undergo final testing, outfitting and crew certification.
HII Newport News Shipbuilding Virginia-class submarine construction vice-president Jason Ward said: “Achieving this construction milestone is a very rewarding event to our shipbuilding team.
“Our shipbuilders and suppliers have dedicated years of hard work to this critical capability that will maintain our customer’s undersea superiority.
“We now look forward to executing our waterborne test programme and working toward sea trials so we can deliver to the Navy.”
Newport News Shipbuilding division commenced construction of the submarine in March 2016, under a teaming agreement with General Dynamics Electric Boat (GDEB).
Around 10,000 shipbuilders and suppliers from all 50 states were involved in the construction of the vessel.
