04 Apr 22. Bahrain commissions ex-US patrol ships. The US 5th Fleet has transferred the Cyclone-class patrol ships it recently retired to Bahrain, which was revealed when they were commissioned by King Hamad bin Isa Al Khalifa on 30 March. The Bahrain Defence Force identified the ships as RBNS Al-Gurairiyah, RBNS Al-Sakhir, RBNS Al-Farooq, RBNS Jenan, and RBNS Damsah. It did not say where they came from, but media coverage of the event showed five Cyclone-class vessels at the Royal Bahrain Naval Force’s (RBNF’s) Salman Naval Base in Manama, which is next door to the US base where they normally dock. A painted-over name on Damsah’s hull showed it was formerly USS Typhoon, which the 5th Fleet retired along with USS Tempest, USS Squall, and USS Whirlwind earlier in March. USS Firebolt was decommissioned in February. (Source: Janes)
04 Apr 22. UK Royal Navy receives patrol boat HMS Dagger. HMS Dagger will patrol British Gibraltar territorial waters, support British exercises and operations in the area. Royal Navy Gibraltar Squadron has taken delivery of its second £5m patrol boat, HMS Dagger, from Marine Specialised Technology. HMS Dagger has joined HMS Cutlass at HM Naval Base Gibraltar. In July 2020, MST received a six-year contract to build two fast patrol boats, HMS Cutlass and HMS Dagger for the Royal Navy Gibraltar Squadron. Replacing HMS Sabre and Scimitar, Cutlass and Dagger will patrol British Gibraltar territorial waters, support British exercises and operations in the area. Dagger is required to undertake a host of sea trials and safety checks before it can fly a White Ensign. The trials are expected to complete in mid of this year. HMS Dagger commanding officer lieutenant Simon Holden said: “The arrival of HMS Dagger to the Royal Navy Gibraltar Squadron is the culmination of many months of hard work by our commercial partners, Ministry of Defence and the Royal Navy.
“This is an incredibly proud moment for everyone involved in the project and as her first Commanding Officer I am looking forward to putting HMS Dagger through her paces and getting her operational as soon as possible. “She is now going to conduct several sea trials prior to raising the White Ensign in mid-2022.” (Source: naval-technology.com)
03 Apr 22. First Lady Dr. Jill Biden and President Joe Biden today participated in the official commissioning of the Virginia-class attack submarine USS Delaware at the Port of Wilmington in Delaware. The first lady serves as sponsor of the ship and participated in its christening in October 2018. Officials had planned to commission the Delaware much sooner, but due to the global COVID-19 pandemic, the official commissioning ceremony was delayed in favor of an administrative commissioning in April 2020. The ship has been in operation since then. In addition to the Bidens, Navy Secretary Carlos Del Toro, Delaware Governor John Carney, U.S. Sens. Tom Carper and Chris Coons of Delaware, the ship’s crew, and others officially commissioned the ship. As the ship’s sponsor, Jill Biden has been involved in key events in the ship’s history. She has also spent significant time during her husband’s presidency and vice presidency working with and supporting the families of military service members — including those of the Delaware’s crew. Today marks the beginning of an incredible journey, the ship’s long and faithful service to our country. … We may not know what’s to come, but we do know this: The challenges will be met with the honor, distinction and valor of the 125 sailors who serve on her decks. You will lead with unparalleled character and courage.”
“Jill has watched over the progress of the USS Delaware for years,” Biden said. ” the daughter of a Navy signalman during World War II, the mother of a member of the Delaware National Guard, and the grandmother of children who experienced having their father deployed away from home for a year at a time, she always holds our military and their families in her heart.” The president said he’s proud of the work his wife has done on behalf of the USS Delaware, but more so of the work she’s done to support the families of the ship’s crew and the families of service members across the nation. 01 Apr 22. Japan starts conversion of second Izumo helicopter carrier. Japan has started converting the second of two Japan Maritime Self-Defense Force (JMSDF) Izumo-class helicopter carriers into aircraft carriers capable of supporting the short take-off and vertical landing (STOVL) F-35B Lightning II Joint Strike Fighter (JSF). A JMSDF spokesperson told Janes on 31 March that Japan Marine United (JMU) recently started refit work on JS Kaga (DDH-184) at the company’s Kure shipyard in Kure City, Hiroshima Prefecture. Janes understands that modifications will be made in two main stages to coincide with the vessel’s periodic refit and overhaul programmes, which take place every five years. Initial modifications, which will take place extensively during fiscal year (FY) 2022, starting 1 April, include reinforcing the flight deck to support additional weight, placing additional guidance lights, drawing the yellow lines on the flight deck necessary for launching F-35Bs, and fitting the ship with heat-resistant deck spots for vertical landings. 01 Apr 22. Nigerian Navy’s new LST heading home. The Nigerian Navy’s new Landing Ship Tank (LST), NNS Kada, is headed home after being completed by Damen Shipyards in the United Arab Emirates (UAE). The Nigerian Navy in a statement said the LST 100 will depart Sharjah in the UAE on 1 April and is expected to arrive on 27 May after covering a distance of 8 400 nautical miles. The vessel will make stopovers in five countries before arriving in Lagos, including Oman (Port Duqm), Kenya (Mombasa), South Africa (Cape Town), Angola (Luanda), and Gabon (Port Gentil). NNS Kada was handed over to the Nigerian Navy on 30 March this year after being ordered in May 2018 and launched on 7 June 2021. The Nigerian Navy said the new vessel (LST 1314) will bolster the Nigerian Navy’s sealift capability. Specifically, it will enhance the transportation of troops, military hardware, vehicles in the conduct of maritime security operations launched from sea as well as supply of relief material during period of national emergency.
“Furthermore, the vessel will serve as a critical component of naval power projection for enhanced maritime security in the Gulf of Guinea and beyond. In its secondary role, the LST will play a critical role in the protection of maritime assets and preservation of law and order at sea, thus contributing significantly to promotion of global maritime commerce, peace and safety,” the Nigerian Navy said. The new LST has a complement of 32 crew and 250 embarked persons and a length of 100.08 metres. NNS Kada is powered by two Caterpillar/Cat 3516 C-rating engines (1 650-3386 hp each) and four Caterpillar C-18 generators. The vessel has an endurance of 15 days/4 000 nautical miles at 15 knots and a maximum speed of 16 knots. If used for humanitarian missions/evacuation, NNS Kada can accommodate over 450 persons on the upper and lower decks on short trips. The 1 300 ton LST has a bow ramp that allows for the direct transfer to and from beaches and is rated to 70 tonnes. The internal ramp is rated at 30 tonnes and the stern ramp 70 tonnes. The vessel can carry two embarked LCVPs (landing craft, vehicle, personnel), a helicopter/UAV on the flight deck, unmanned undersea vehicles and miscellaneous cargo with a 25 ton deck crane. The new vessel will replace the landing ships NNS Ambe and NNS Ofiom, which were decommissioned ten years ago. They were Type 502 amphibious vessels built by Howaldtswerke-Deutsche Werft (HDW) in Germany in 1978. These vessels served the Navy well in the 1980s-90s, playing significant roles during the ECOMOG intervention Operations in Liberia and Sierra Leone, as well as other peace support operations. The Italian manufacturer announced the event on 7 April, saying that the first two helicopters had been delivered to the Qatar Emiri Air Force (QEAF) from its manufacturing facility in Venice Tessera.
“Another major programme achievement in the Qatar Emiri Air Force’s NH90 programme was made on 31 March with the delivery of the first two NFH naval variant helicopters. 04 Apr 22. Indonesia’s PTDI submits modification clearance for CN-235 to Malaysia. PT Dirgantara Indonesia (PTDI) handed over the supplemental type certificate (STC) – required for the conversion of CN-235 transport aircraft to maritime patrol aircraft – to the Royal Malaysian Air Force (RMAF), during the Defence Services Asia (DSA) 2022 exhibition in Kuala Lumpur.
PTDI said it has completed the conversion of one out of three CN-235 aircraft that need to be upgraded.
The company added that it intends to complete the conversion and delivery of the other two aircraft in April and May 2022.
STC is a type certificate issued when an applicant has received the Federal Aviation Administration’s (FAA) approval to modify an aeronautical product from its original design. According to PTDI, co-operation between the Indonesian Defence Airworthiness Authority (IDAA), under the Indonesian Ministry of Defense, and the Malaysian Ministry of Defence’s Directorate General Technical Airworthiness (DGTA) has helped in obtaining the STC for the RMAF’s CN-235 aircraft.
The RMAF has been using CN-235 aircraft for more than two decades and has seven of these in service. (Source: Janes)

06 Apr 22. RoK restructures missile commands. Seoul has announced a restructure of elements of the Republic of Korea (RoK) Armed Forces’ missile and missile-defence command units. The Ministry of National Defense (MND) said that the restructure – formally approved on 1 April and promulgated through a presidential order issued on the same day – is a direct response to growing missile threats from North Korea. The reorganisation affects the Republic of Korea Army’s (RoKA’s) Missile Command and the Republic of Korea Air Force’s (RoKAF’s) Air Defense Missile Command. The former’s name has been changed to RoKA Missile Strategic Command, while the latter becomes RoKAF Missile Defense Command. South Korea‘s Defense Minister Suh Wook said at an MND ceremony to mark the restructure that the move signals greater emphasis on developing RoK Armed Forces‘ missile and missile-defence capability. “[These two units] are pillars of our deterrence force against North Korea, leading the South Korean military’s missile attack and missile defence,” he said.
