18 Feb 22. Construction of new vehicle maintenance facility starts at Whiteman AFB. The construction of the 58,000ft² vehicle maintenance facility is expected to complete by September 2023. The US Air Force (USAF) and the US Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) have commenced construction works for a new vehicle maintenance facility on Whiteman Air Force Base (AFB), Missouri. The works commenced with a ground-breaking ceremony by the USAF’s 509th Bomb Wing and the Kansas City District USACE. The 58,000ft² new facility will be around 20,000ft² larger than the old facility. USACE is working with the 509th Civil Engineer Squadron (CES), the Airmen and civilians that will use the facility to deliver the project. The scope of the works also includes the disposal of older facilities.

USACE resident engineer Ben Schreiber said: “Getting those that use the facility to help design a new project helps the facility go that extra mile. They are hands-on, they’ve been there and they’ve done that. They know where they need more space and where they don’t.

“Getting that knowledge built into a facility that’s going to be around for 25+years is vital. We’re investing $25m in this project so we want to get the taxpayers’ return on that.

The project is expected to complete by September 2023.

509th CES project manager Scott Fitzgerald said: “The Army Corps of Engineers is the driving force behind this project.

“From both design to solicitation of the contract to implementation and ultimately closing out the project to hand it over to the users when finished, the Army Corps is vital in ensuring these projects run as smoothly as possible.” (Source: airforce-technology.com)

MARITIME

24 Feb 22. Construction begins on US Navy’s San Antonio-class LPD 30.

Construction of the US Navy’s San Antonio-class amphibious transport dock, Harrisburg, has started and was officially marked with a ceremonial authentication of the keel. The ceremony was held at Huntington Ingalls Industries’ (HII) Ingalls Shipbuilding division. Also called landing platform dock (LPD), Harrisburg (LPD 30) has been named after the city of Pennsylvania. Harrisburg will be the first Flight II LPD and the 14th San Antonio-class ship of the US Navy. According to the company, the next generation LPD Flight II amphibious ships will replace two classes of dock landing ships, Whidbey Island (LSD 41) and Harpers Ferry (LSD 49) . During the ceremony, initials of the ship’s sponsor, Alexandra Curry, were welded onto a plate. Ingalls Shipbuilding president Kari Wilkinson said: “While she could not join us, we welcome Curry in spirit as she is now an important part of our shipbuilding family.

“We look forward to being with her throughout the life of the ship, and we are very grateful for her commitment to this crew. She is a true patriot, with deep respect and gratitude for military service.”

The San Antonio-class ships are 684ft-long, 105ft-wide and designed to meet the various amphibious and expeditionary mission requirements of the navy and Marine Corps.

Currently, Ingalls Shipbuilding is constructing three more San Antonio-class ships. So far, it has delivered 11 vessels of the class to the navy. (Source: naval-technology.com)

23 Feb 22. Sea trials launch for the last of France’s new multi-mission frigates. The final French next-generation frigate has entered sea trials ahead of a scheduled delivery later this year, ship manufacturer Naval Group announced Tuesday.

The European Multi-Mission Frigate (or FREMM, for the French Frégate Européenne Multi-Mission) DA Lorraine began its trials on Feb. 22, off the coast of Brittany, Naval Group said in a press release. The initial session will test the ship’s propulsion and navigation systems, with additional systems tests to follow.

The Lorraine is scheduled to be delivered to the French navy in late 2022. It’s the tenth ship in the FREMM program, and the eighth for the French, following the deliveries between 2012 and 2021 of the Aquitaine, Provence, Languedoc, Auverge, Bretagne, Normandie, and Alsace. The other two FREMMs built under this program are in North Africa: Morocco took delivery of the Mohammed IV in 2014, while the Tahya Misr was delivered to Egypt in 2015.

Both the Alsace and the forthcoming Lorraine are air defense variants known as FREMM DA, for Frégate Européenne Multimissions de Défense Aérienne. The Lorraine will join the Alsace in Toulon, to provide air defense support for the Charles de Gaulle aircraft carrier, and Mistral-class helicopter carriers, as part of a naval or amphibious strike group. The eight frigates were designed for anti-submarine warfare.

The Lorraine also features several improvements based on operational feedback from its predecessors, including enhanced cyber capabilities, an optimized mast, a stronger-range radar, and NATO’s Liaison 22 secure digital radio system, per Naval Group.

The FREMM program is a joint French-Italian program, being managed by the Organization for Joint Armament Cooperation (OCCAR), on behalf of the two countries’ militaries. Fincantieri manufactures the Italian FREMMs, along with its own export nations, which include Indonesia and the United States. (Source: Defense News)

17 Feb 22. ST Engineering debuts hospital ship concept.  Singapore’s state-affiliated engineering company ST Engineering has unveiled a hospital ship concept at the 2022 edition of the Singapore Airshow.

The concept is being marketed as an afloat humanitarian assistance and disaster relief (HADR) as well as a medical evacuation platform. It is based on the company’s 160 m roll-on/roll-off passenger vessel (ROPAX) MV Nova Star, which was supplied to Polish ferry operator Polferries in 2019. The vessel has an overall length of 161m, an overall beam of 25.6m, and a draught of 6.2m. It has a gross tonnage of about 27,744 tonnes and features about 6,853sq m of deck space that can be utilised for HADR operations. The ship can accommodate a helicopter on the uppermost deck for the ambulation of incapacitated patients. Additionally, the vessel can receive casualties from land vehicles that can shuttle between the ship and disaster-struck areas via a roll-on/roll-off ramp at the stern.

21 Feb 22. KAI LAH successfully tested for Arctic operations.

South Korea’s Defense Acquisition Program Administration (DAPA) announced on 18 February that the Korea Aerospace Industries (KAI) Light Armed Helicopter (LAH) has completed flight tests in cold weather conditions in Canada. The agency said that the helicopter, prototype 002, was flown about 40 times to test 165 items, including the engine, and verify that the helicopter is able to withstand cold weather conditions without affecting its manoeuvrability and performance. A KAI KUH-1 Surion utility helicopter also conducted flight tests in cold weather in Alaska in 2013, the agency added. (Source: Janes)

24 Feb 22. Bell Textron begins AH-1Z Viper production for Czech Republic.

The manufacturing is taking place at Bell’s Amarillo Assembly Centre.

Bell Textron has commenced the manufacture of the first AH-1Z Viper twin-engine attack helicopter for the Czech Republic Air Force.

The aircraft is being built at the company’s assembly centre in Amarillo, Texas, US. The development follows after Bell Textron started production of the UH-1Y Venom helicopters for the country in July last year, marking the first production for an international operator of the UH-1Y.

Purchase of the military helicopters is being executed as part of the first foreign military sale (FMS) of a mixed H-1 fleet.

The Czech Republic is acquiring four AH-1Z and eight UH-1Y military helicopters. Bell H-1 programme director and vice-president Mike Deslatte said: “Bell understands what it means to execute a successful international programme.

“We understand the importance of providing the unmatched capability of the H-1 aircraft to our customers. Bell remains focused on producing exceptional combat aircraft and providing modern capabilities for the Czech Air Force as a partner in the H-1 programme, along with the US Government.”

In addition, Bell will also develop a flight training device for the Czech Republic. Delivery of the first H-1 aircraft to the Czech Republic will start next year and be completed by 2024.

The H-1 programme aims to produce 217 AH-1Zs and 168 UH-1Ys, with more than 100 consecutive H-1s delivered on time for the US Marines Corps (USMC) and FMS clients. The firm is also involved in the production of AH-1Zs for the US Marines Corps (USMC) and Bahrain Air Force. Both AH-1Z and UH-1Y share an 85% commonality between parts and feature full mission capabilities. (Source: airforce-technology.com)

18 Feb 22. USAF to phase out Multi-Domain Warfare Officer (130) career field. The move will affect 136 Total Force Airmen in the active component. The US Air Force (USAF) is set to phase out the Multi-Domain Warfare Officer (13O) career field to focus on training in multi-domain capabilities. The phase-out will involve 136 Total Force Airmen assigned in the active component, Air National Guard and Air Force Reserve.

Air Force staff chief general CQ Brown, Jr said: “We must be prepared to face future conflicts with our joint and combined partners, and the knowledge Multi-Domain Warfare Officers bring to the fight is too critical to confine to a single career field.

“To continue outpacing near-peer adversaries, we must reinforce all Air Force members’ multi-domain expertise.”

The USAF will work to improve its professional education and force structure.

This will allow the airmen to apply operational concepts and contribute to Joint All-Domain Operations instead of focusing on one core Air Force Specialty Code.

Eligible officers are scheduled to meet the LAF-X Colonel central selection board between 29 March to 14 April 2022, following which the transition will be initiated.

Multi-Domain Warfare Officers will receive guidance from commanders during the reassignment process.

US Air Force operations staff deputy chief and training and readiness director major general Albert Miller added: “We want to utilise the depth of knowledge and experience that our Multi-Domain Warfare Officers bring to the fight and to the maximum extent possible need their help to train and educate Airmen to fight and win against a peer threat in all domains.” (Source: airforce-technology.com)

————————————————————————-

21 Feb 22. SSAFA’s Royal Albert Hall concert on the Wednesday 16th March at 7.30pm is officially part of The Queen’s Platinum Jubilee celebrations. This will be the very first high-profile event to take place in this unprecedented year marking Her Majesty’s seventieth anniversary on the throne.

This event holds particular poignancy as it is also the seventieth anniversary of The Queen becoming Patron of SSAFA.

There is 20% off for SSAFA supporters if you follow the button link, and use the code SSAFA2022. Any tickets already purchased for the ‘War & Remembrance’ event will be valid.

The on-stage production will be hosted by the BBC’s Sophie Raworth and features music performed by the Royal Philharmonic Concert Orchestra, conducted by Mike Dixon.

Works by Great British composers including Edward Elgar, Benjamin Britten and William Walton will take centre stage, with a focus on music played at Her Majesty’s 1953 Coronation and other key moments of the Queen’s reign.

Special guests will recount their experiences of meeting the Monarch as the nation celebrates this special anniversary in our nation’s history.

Sir Andrew Gregory, Chief Executive of SSAFA, the Armed Forces charity, said: “We are proud to be presenting ‘The Queen’s Platinum Jubilee – 70 years’ at the Royal Albert Hall to celebrate SSAFA’s Patron, Her Majesty The Queen’s reign.

The Royal Albert Hall is at the heart of the nation; hosting concerts such as The Festival of Remembrance and ‘We’ll Meet Again’ for VE Day 75. It seems only fitting that on the occasion of the Platinum Jubilee, SSAFA should present one of the first high-profile events in honour of that magnificent milestone.

Over Her Majesty’s reign, our country has seen many challenges; and it is a testament to the British people, in face of conflicts, terrorist campaigns and more recently the pandemic, that we rally, and that we have and will continue to overcome adversity. God save The Queen.”

SSAFA has been providing practical, emotional, and financial support to our Forces and their families since 1885 and not just during times of conflict. Our teams of volunteers and employees help those currently serving, veterans, and their families to retain their independence and dignity.

————————————————————————-

SSAFA, the Armed Forces charity, has been providing lifelong support to our Forces and their families since 1885. In 2020, our teams of volunteers and employees helped more than 79,000 people in need, the currently serving (both regulars and reserves), veterans from the Second World War and those who have served in more recent conflicts, as well as their families. SSAFA understands that behind every uniform is a person. And we are here for that person – any time they need us, in any way they need us, for as long as they need us.
