19 Jan 22. USS Tripoli achieves its fixed-wing flight certification. The fifth-generation fighter has operated on the amphibious assault ship for the first time. The US Navy’s America-class amphibious assault ship USS Tripoli (LHA 7) has achieved certification to conduct fixed-wing flight operations. It follows the landing of an F-35B Lighting II from Marine Strike Fighter Attack Squadron (VMFA) 122 aboard the ship. The touchdown, which took place on 11 January, marks the first time the new fifth generation fighter landed on the LHA 7. Tripoli commanding officer captain Joel Lang said: “This is what Tripoli was built for. The crew and supporting organisations have worked incredibly hard to get us to the point where we can launch and recover aircraft, rising to every challenge the Navy has put before them since we commissioned.” To accomplish this milestone, the flight deck crew sailors have trained their entire careers to run flight operations, the navy stated.  According to the US Navy, USS Tripoli has been steadily operating and training the crew for ongoing flight operations with VMFA-122. USS Tripoli and the Marines, who operate the fighter jet, shared much coordination to bring the aircraft to the ship. VMFA-225 landing signal officer major Randy Brazile said: “It was an honour to support Tripoli in accomplishing such an important event.

“The Marines and pilots from VMFA-122 and (Marine Operational Test and Evaluation Squadron) VMX-1 are excited to see Tripoli achieve its fixed-wing flight certification.”

Commissioned in July 2020, USS Tripoli is homeported in San Diego and operates under commander, Expeditionary Strike Group (ESG) 3. (Source: naval-technology.com)

20 Jan 22. Dassault Aviation delivers six Rafale fighter jets to Greece. The Rafale jets were ferried to Greece from Dassault’s Istres site on 19 January. France-based military aircraft developer Dassault Aviation has shipped the first six Rafale fighter aircraft being acquired by the Hellenic Air Force (HAF) to the Tanagra Air Base in Greece. Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis, accompanied by National Defense Minister Nikolaos Panagiotopoulos and other authorities, welcomed the jets. The six Rafale aircraft’s arrival in Greece comes after the country signed a deal with France to acquire 18 jets in December 2020. The deal had a combined value of €1.92bn ($2.18bn), with Greece also expected to pay a further €400m for associated equipment.  Dassault Aviation said that the aircraft’s entry into operational service of the HAF’s 332nd Squadron showcases the strong partnership between the two nations. Dassault Aviation chairman and CEO Eric Trappier said: “The mastery with which the Hellenic Air Force carried out this first ferry flight is a testimony to the excellence of our cooperation and the strength of our historical relationship with Greece for more than 45 years.

“Thanks to our mobilisation, we were able to meet the expectations of the Greek authorities in record time, who now have the Rafale on national territory to reinforce the protection and sovereignty of the country.

“It also attests to the outstanding quality of our aircraft, confirmed by its export success. Lastly, it reflects our total commitment to meeting the needs of the HAF and to participating in Greece’s strategic ambitions.” (Source: airforce-technology.com)

19 Jan 22. New medal unveiled to honour Kabul evacuation heroes.

Members of the Armed Forces who were deployed in August 2021 to support the evacuation from Afghanistan will receive medallic recognition for their contribution. This was the largest humanitarian aid operation in over 70 years. Personnel from across the Royal Navy, British Army and Royal Air Force will receive the Operational Service Medal (OSM) Afghanistan, with its own distinctive clasp, for their involvement in Operation Pitting – an evacuation effort to airlift thousands of Afghans and British nationals from Afghanistan as the Taliban seized control of the country.

Prime Minister Boris Johnson said: “I’m delighted that Her Majesty The Queen has given permission for a special medal to be awarded to all those who deployed to Kabul, to honour their heroism in the face of extreme adversity. Operation PITTING will go down as one of the great achievements of our UK Armed Services and their civilian counterparts in the post-war era. The whole country can be immensely proud of their tireless work to bring men, women and children to safety. They represent the very best of us.”

Commanded from the UK’s Permanent Joint Headquarters in Northwood, Operation Pitting began on 13th August 2021 and assisted those eligible for relocation to the UK under the Afghan Relocation and Assistance Policy from Afghanistan.

During this period of humanitarian crisis, the military provided food and water, clothing, medical supplies and hygiene products for evacuees and policed the airport alongside multiple forces from across the world. 16 Air Assault Brigade put 600 soldiers on the ground to provide force protection and logistical support to the vast operation at Kabul Airport.

The RAF also completed a record-breaking flight with a passenger number of 439 on a Globemaster.

The operation ended on 28th August 2021 and resulted in the safe evacuation of over 15,000 people on 100 flights, from at least 38 different nations. This was a key part of a multi-national effort which secured the evacuation of over 122,000 people.

Defence Secretary Ben Wallace said: “Last August, the Armed Forces demonstrated true heroism, bravery and dedication by supporting Operation Pitting – a monumental effort to airlift over 15,000 vulnerable Afghans and British nationals from Afghanistan during a rapidly deteriorating humanitarian crisis. As the security situation worsened by the hour, our service men and women stepped up and delivered the largest British evacuation since the Second World War. They will rightly receive medallic recognition for their efforts. I would like to thank them, and all our service personnel, on behalf of the public and UK Government for safely evacuating endangered Afghans through some of the most desperate scenes imaginable. You have done us all proud.”

Following approval from Her Majesty The Queen, they will now receive the medallic recognition their efforts deserve. (Source: https://www.gov.uk/)
