The expansion will allow the company to develop and deploy a communications superhighway for the space economy. SpaceLink currently employs 10 in Virginia, and will create 41 new jobs with this expansion. The company established its headquarters at 8260 Greensboro Drive in Tysons this year and has offices in Silicon Valley.

“Fairfax County is a natural choice for SpaceLink because of its proximity to so many of our customers, partners and advisors,” said David Bettinger, chief executive officer at SpaceLink. “As an innovative space company, we also have the opportunity to draw from the rich pool of talented technology and business professionals who are drawn to the region for its opportunities and dynamic environment. Northern Virginia is an important hub for the aerospace and defense industry, which makes it a great fit for SpaceLink’s corporate headquarters.”

05 Oct 21. Collins Aerospace inaugurates new Army Customer Experience Center in US. The new centre will serve as a testbed and demonstration area for emerging technologies. Raytheon Technologies unit Collins Aerospace has opened a new Customer Experience Center to support crucial US Army Aviation initiatives. The new centre is in Huntsville, Alabama, US, and near the US Army post Redstone Arsenal.

According to the company, the new facility will allow it to work in close cooperation with the service and industry partners on initiatives such as the future vertical lift and enduring fleet modernisation.

Furthermore, the facility will serve as a testbed and demonstration area for evolving technologies. It supports the US Army’s procurement strategy “Fly Before You Buy”.

Collins Aerospace Avionics president Dave Nieuwsma said: “Our Customer Experience Center in Huntsville is the first of its kind for Collins, established with the express purpose of delivering integrated, innovative solutions to Army Aviation for its most important programmes.

“Collaboration will be the facility’s central focus. Collaboration with the army, collaboration with industry, collaboration across Collins and collaboration with our sister Raytheon businesses in Huntsville.”

The centre is designed to support the army to avoid ‘vendor lock’ and benefit from more effective platform sustainment from effective product upgrades.

Collins Aerospace plans to use the centre to showcase modular open system architectures at the aircraft and sub-systems levels.

06 Oct 21. HHI lays keel for RoKN’s first KDX-III Batch II guided-missile destroyer, South Korean shipbuilder Hyundai Heavy Industries (HHI) has announced that it held a keel-laying ceremony on 5 October in Ulsan for the first of three Sejong Daewang (KDX-III)-class Batch II guided-missile destroyers for the Republic of Korea Navy (RoKN). Construction of the destroyer began in February after HHI secured a KRW676.6 bn (USD565 m) contract in October 2019 for the ‘detailed design’ and build of the warship, which is expected to be launched in the second half of 2022 and handed over to the navy in November 2024. The Batch II vessels will be larger and feature more advanced systems and armament that those of the first batch. According to HHI, the new destroyers will be 170 m long (about 3 m longer than the three KDX-III ships of the first batch), 21 m wide, and have a standard displacement of 8,100 tonnes (compared to the 7,600 tonnes of the Batch I ships), which will make them the largest destroyers in RoKN inventory once they enter service. HHI said that this improved variant is expected to be capable of operating at speeds of up to 30 kt, feature an improved ballistic missile defence capability, and be equipped with enhanced anti-submarine warfare technology, including a more powerful sonar to detect and track submarines at longer ranges. 05 Oct 21. HMS Trent deploys to West Africa to support maritime security. The patrol ship will visit Nigeria, Ghana, Senegal, Gambia and Cape Verde, conducting patrols and helping partner navies to build capacity through training. Royal Navy patrol ship HMS Trent is setting sail to the waters of the Gulf of Guinea as she heads for security patrols and a mission to support allies in West Africa. The River-class patrol ship will visit Nigeria, Ghana, Senegal, Gambia and Cape Verde, and will take part in French-led multinational training exercises that will bring together international partners in the region, known as Exercise Grand African Nemo. HMS Trent, which is the first Royal Navy vessel to operate in the region for three years, will conduct maritime security patrols as well as support partner navies by helping them to develop key maritime skills and develop plans for future operations in the region. This deployment is a clear signal of the UK’s commitment to being more persistently engaged in the region, through which more than £6 bn of UK trade passes every year.

Armed Forces Minister James Heappey said, “This deployment shows the Integrated Review in action. It demonstrates how a truly Global Britain is stepping up on the world stage to tackle shared international security challenges. Working hand-in-hand with our allies we are utilising our forward deployed Armed Forces to tackle threats at the source, making the world a safer place for all.”

HMS Trent carries on board a contingent of Royal Marines from 42 Commando, which will train partner forces across the region in skills like boarding and searching of suspicious vessels, as well as evidence handling and medical skills.

As well delivering training to partner nations, 42 Commando are experts in boarding operations helping fight against illegal activity like piracy, drugs-smuggling and terrorism.

HMS Trent will attend the Friends of the Gulf of Guinea (FoGG) G7++ conference in Dakar, which the UK is co-chairing with hosts Senegal. Britain established the group in 2013 as part of the then G8 to coordinate regional maritime security efforts.

HMS Trent’s Commanding Officer, Commander Thomas Knott, said, “Continuing a year of forward deployed operations in the Black Sea and Mediterranean, this deployment marks an important return to the region for the Royal Navy demonstrating our commitment to improving Maritime Security in the area. We are extremely proud and excited to commence this deployment to what is an exciting new region for HMS Trent. We are looking forward to working with regional partners and also engaging with local communities in an effort to strengthen security.”

HMS Trent is one of five Royal Navy patrol ships which are currently operating around the world in areas of critical importance to the UK – from the Indo-Pacific, South Atlantic to the Mediterranean and Caribbean.

This is part of the Royal Navy’s Forward Presence programme that seeks to put patrol ships in positions around the globe ready to respond to global events.

HMS Trent finished preparations for her patrol to West Africa this week in the waters close to Gibraltar, refreshing skills following a period of maintenance and a rotation of crew. (Source: https://www.gov.uk/)

01 Oct 21. Fincantieri launches Qatar’s third Al Zubarah-class corvette Al Khor. The keel of the fourth corvette, Sumaysimah, was laid in February this year. Italian shipbuilder Fincantieri has conducted the technical launch of the Qatar Emiri Navy’s (QEN) newest Al Zubarah-class corvette Al Khor at its Muggiano (La Spezia) shipyard.

Al Khor is the third of four Al Zubarah-class corvettes being built by Fincantieri as part of the order placed by the Qatari Ministry of Defence. QEN deputy commander and QEN Flotilla commander staff brigadier general Abdulla Ali Al-Mazroey and Italian Navy Maritime Commander–Area North vice admiral Giorgio Lazio attended the ceremony.

Fincantieri said that the ceremony was ‘held in a restricted format and in full compliance with anti-contagion requirements’.

In June 2016, Fincantieri won a €4bn contract from the Qatari Ministry of Defence to build seven new generation surface vessels for the Qatar Emiri Naval Forces.

As part of the country’s naval modernisation plan, the company will build four corvettes, one amphibious vessel (landing platform dock), and two offshore patrol vessels.

Al Khor will be delivered in 2022. The second vessel of the class, Damsah, was launched in February this year.

The new Al Zubarah-class corvettes are 107m long, have a beam of 14.7m, and can cruise at a top speed of 28k.

Each vessel has the capacity to accommodate 112 people and can operate high-speed boats, such as a rigid hull inflatable boat.

The vessels feature a combined diesel and diesel plant (CODAD) configured propulsion system, a flight deck and hangar to host one NH90 helicopter.

The corvettes can be deployed for various roles, ranging from surveillance with sea rescue capacities to fighting vessels.

According to work by global HR consulting firm Robert Half, cloud migration and project management experience are top of the tech list for hiring managers in 2021, with DevOps engineers, programme leads and network architects all in high demand. (Source: naval-technology.com)

“At Beirut Airbase, the Lebanese Army received Six MD 530F helicopters donated by the United States, in the presence of a number of officer and members of the Defense Cooperation Office of the US Embassy in Lebanon,” the announcement said.

The six MD 530s that were contracted in late 2018 are part of a wider USD120 m arms package from the US announced in 2017. They were supposed to have been delivered by the end of September 2020, but the Covid-19 pandemic is likely to have played a major part in the delay to this timeline.

As previously disclosed, Lebanon’s helicopters are fitted with a full ‘glass’ cockpit and a four-station weapons plank. Other items comprise the Moog Weapons Stores Management System (SMS), the DillonAero Mission Configurable Armament System (MCAS), 7.62 mm ballistic armour protection; FN Herstal 12.7 mm Heavy Machine Gun Pod (HMP) 400 systems, M260 seven-shot pods for 70 mm unguided rockets and BAE Systems’ Advanced Precision Kill Weapons System (APKWS) guided rockets, and an MX-10D EO/IR sensor and Thales Scorpion helmet-mounted sighting system. They will also feature the Harris Falcon III RF-7850A-MR multichannel airborne networking radios with advanced encryption standards.

Lebanon is procuring the MD 530 to better defend its porous border with Syria at the same time as affirming the Lebanese Armed Force as the “sole defender” of the country, as previously described by the US Embassy in Beirut. (Source: Jane’s)

05 Oct 21. UMAV’s STI and partners conduct prototype DATT MA 600 airship flight. The maiden flight test has been conducted under the USAF’s AFWERX Phase I contract. UAV Corp’s (UMAV), Skyborne Technology (STI) and its partners have conducted the first flight of the prototype Detachable Airship from a Tether Technology (DATT MA 600) Hybrid Electric Extended Range Airship. The other three partners are Research in Flight (RIF) as prime contractor, Auburn University and Gulf Coast State College. The 250ft DATT 600 airship has been designed as part of the six-month Phase I project of the US Air Force’s (USAF) AFWERX contract. The contract was awarded to explore the potential of STI’s aerial transport platform for civilian and military support missions.

UAV Corp chairman Billy Robinson said: “After the successful control systems test, we flew our prototype DATT 600 airship completing the first phase of our airforce contract, proving the initial designs for our next generation airship. Our success with the airforce project and the yet untapped near-space opportunities creates a new and exciting direction for our company.”

The 250ft DATT 600 airship is designed to conduct flights up to an altitude of 15,000ft to 20,000ft. This can be further developed for extended flight altitudes with an aim to reach near space. The maiden flight now moves the development effort towards a Phase II contract, under which the team will manufacture and test a DATT. The testing will focus on evaluating the airship as a cylinder shape aerial platform. It will be equipped with new aerodynamic properties.

STI CEO Michael Lawson said: “We are excited to have had successful test flights of the prototype airship as the team looks forward to the build of the full scale 250ft DATT MA 600 airship slated for delivery in early 2023 with its remotely piloted capability and a seven (7) drone launch and recovery system.

“With the new modular designs with advanced composites and propulsion, near space at altitudes up to 100,000ft are not out of the question.” (Source: airforce-technology.com)

05 Oct 21. Germany and UK stand up binational bridging engineer battalion. The German and British armies stood up binational Amphibious Engineer Battalion 130 in Minden, northern Germany, on 1 October. The battalion is made up of the British Army’s 23 Amphibious Engineer Squadron Royal Engineers (RE) and the German Army’s Panzerpionierbataillon 130 and the 3rd, 4th, and 5th companies of its heavy Pionierbataillon (Engineer Battalion) 901. The British Army said on its website on 4 October that the new battalion is primarily amphibious-focused but also has other engineering capabilities. The German Army pointed out on its website on 1 October that it and the British Army are the only NATO militaries that operate the M3 amphibious bridge and ferry system. During the stand-up ceremony, the new battalion built a bridge formed of three German and three UK M3s.

Speaking at the ceremony, UK Chief of the General Staff General Mark Carleton-Smith said, “The changes in our Integrated and Security Review mean that the British Army will be designed to operate globally on a permanent basis and forming land regional hubs. These hubs will enable the army to be more actively and persistently engaged across the globe, including in Europe, where we continue to have a leading role in European defence and security. Forward Holding Base Sennelager is the nexus through which the UK brings together armoured warfighting capability, world-class strategic planning, and logistics, enabling persistent engagement across Europe. In practice, this will mean deploying more of our troops more often, for longer periods, both with NATO and alongside our wider networks of allies and partners, building credible deterrence across the alliance.” (Source: Janes)

05 Oct 21. Supacat and Marell Boats partner to bid M15 Patrol Boat into police and military market. UK prime contractor, Supacat, has signed an MOU with Marell Boats of Sweden to offer Marell’s high-speed aluminium M15 patrol boat to meet police and military requirements for intercept, patrol, and support boats.  Supacat and Marell Boats are bidding the Marell M15, which has set new standards for high-speed vessels and is proven in service with the Stockholm Sea Police, for the UK Metropolitan Police’s requirement for a vessel to operate on the Thames Estuary and Inshore Waters.  Further procurement opportunities will be targeted with the UK MoD and other UK Police Forces with access to waterways, as well as requirements in other countries.   The partnership is offering the latest Marell M15 powered by three Volvo Penta D6-440 DPI engines.  The addition of a third engine increases the Marell M15’s acceleration and its top speed from 40 to 50 knots while maintaining low fuel consumption at 40 knots.  It has exceptional manoeuvrability both at high and low speed and runs completely dry with sea spray directed to the side of the boat at all speeds.  The additional absence of a hump ensures the helmsman maintains a clear view in front.  The high forward deck and low aft deck provide an ideal platform for patrolling, surveillance, interception and boarding.  The aft deck can carry extra loads or watercraft, or serve as a helicopter launch platform. Marell Boats is unique in building its boats upright in a jig making production of the hulls highly accurate.  Quality is further increased by the transvers and longitudinal frames being keyed into each other so that the vessels are built to very tight tolerances.

Phil Applegarth, Director of Supacat, said, “Supacat’s experience of military, government and non-defence applications combined with Marell’s expertise in high-speed aluminium boats make a perfect match to grow a common business in the UK defence and security market, as well as in other markets such as the Commonwealth”.

Gerard Törneman, Global Sales, Marell Boats Sweden AB, said, “We are thrilled to work with all the experienced people at Supacat.  They are easy to work with and have a great market attitude in supporting the customer from initial project phase to aftermarket services”.
