29 Sep 11. Airbus will set up a joint aircraft maintenance, repair and overhaul (MRO) facility in India with private Indian defense company Pipavav Defence and Offshore Engineering. EADS, the parent company of Airbus, will hold 26 percent equity in the joint venture, while Pipavav will hold a 51 percent stake, said an executive of Pipavav. Later, EADS may try to increase its stake to 49 percent. The MRO facilities and associated infrastructure are likely to cost $100m, added the executive. The joint facility initially will target the servicing of civilian aircraft, though the Indian Air Force is also eyeing the venture. And EADS, with its Eurofighter aircraft, is bidding against Dassault’s Rafale in India’s $10bn medium multirole aircraft competition. The details of the collaboration, including the location of the facility, have yet to be decided, added the executive. However, sources in the company said, the location will be decided after the winner of the multirole fighter aircraft competition is announced, which is likely by year-end. (Source: Defense News)

30 Sep 11. Harris Corporation has opened a new office at Redstone Arsenal in Huntsville, Ala. to support the communications and information technology needs of a diverse range of U.S. Army programs. The Huntsville site is the fourth new Harris office opened in 2011 in direct support of U.S. Army requirements. The other offices are in Texas, Maryland and Florida. In Huntsville, senior Harris management, employees and partners joined local political leaders and Army officials in commemorating the opening today at the Harris office in Cummings Research Park — the second largest technology park in the United States, with more than 285 companies represented. A team of more than 60 employees at the new Harris Redstone Arsenal office are providing sales, program management, engineering and technical support to the Army aviation, ballistic missile defense, space and research and development communities. Their focus is on delivering capabilities from across Harris, including the world’s most advanced tactical radios, integrated network solutions, and secure, reliable communication systems.

British troops will benefit from improved delivery of ammunition, thanks to a new £83m bullet factory in Cheshire. The new building, on the site of the existing Radway Green plant, was handed over to BAE Systems by builders Shephards today, witnessed by Minister for Defence Procurement Peter Luff. It will have 50 per cent greater capacity than the existing factory and will be much more energy-efficient. 114 machines are being purchased or refurbished for the new facility, which will be fully operational in 2013. Radway Green small arms ammunition is already regarded as among the best in the world and the new plant will improve quality still further. The modernisation of the Radway Green site is part of a £206m drive to overhaul the country’s three major World War 2-vintage munitions plants, owned by BAE Systems.
The investment in the new plants is due to a 15-year £2bn partnering agreement called MASS (Munitions Acquisition – the Supply Solution), signed in August 2008 between the UK Ministry of Defence a
