24 Jun 11. $86m HMAS Creswell Project Supports Local Jobs. The Australian Parliamentary Secretary for Defence, Senator David Feeney, welcomed the opening of new facilities at HMAS Creswell in Jervis Bay. The $86m HMAS Creswell Redevelopment Project has created in the order of 2,400 jobs throughout the construction phase. New classrooms, an auditorium, meeting rooms, a computer laboratory and classroom and a finishing kitchen were built at Geelong House. More student apartments and new office accommodation and recreation facilities have been built at Cerberus House. This brings the student accommodation capacity at HMAS Creswell to more than 380 units. A new accommodation building, Griffiths House, provides more than 30 rooms. These facilities will be used by new entry officer trainees, Senior and Junior sailors, and officer career course students.

27 Jun 11. Raytheon Company’s Missile Systems business broke ground for an all-up-round Standard Missile production facility in Huntsville, Ala. Raytheon will construct the state-of-the-art factory on the U.S. Army’s Redstone Arsenal site. When completed, the facility will provide final assembly and testing for Raytheon’s SM-3 and SM-6 missiles. “This new factory will enable us to provide our Missile Defense Agency and U.S. Navy customers with even greater capability,” said Dr. Taylor W. Lawrence, Raytheon Missile Systems president. “Raytheon’s SM-3 is the centerpiece of the nation’s new missile defense strategy in Europe, and SM-6 will give the U.S. Navy a new, much-needed weapon system.” The 70,000 square-foot production facility will be constructed in two phases; each phase will be tied to SM-3 and SM-6 production contracts. “This new Raytheon factory means more jobs for Alabama and is a clear demonstration of Raytheon’s strong partnership with the state,” said Sen. Richard Shelby of Alabama. “Raytheon continues to be an important piece of Alabama’s economic picture.”

23 Jun 11. Rubicon Technology, Inc. announced two critical milestones that enable its new state-of-the-art facility in Penang, Malaysia to move into volume production of six- and eight-inch polished sapphire wafers.
Rubicon’s new Malaysia facility recently completed qualification of its six-inch wafers by a key customer, and also successfully completed an ISO certification audit. Both of these milestones enable the Malaysia facility to move into volume production of six-inch polished wafers, which are in high demand as LED (light emitting diodes) chip manufacturers continue to migrate to larger diameter substrates to realize greater efficiencies. The facility also is capable of processing and polishing eight-inch wafers that Rubicon provides to customers in R&D volumes. (Source: Yahoo!/BUSINESS WIRE)

27 Jun 11. An agreement formalizing the industrial and commercial scope of the Eurocopter Kazakhstan Engineering joint venture – which will assemble and customize EC145 helicopters at a new facility in Astana – was signed in Paris today by Eurocopter President & CEO Lutz Bertling and Bolat Smagulov, President of Kazakhstan Engineering, in the presence of French and Kazakh prime ministers François Fillon and Karim Massimov. The accord marks an important milestone in the joint venture’s establishment, which this year plans to assemble and deliver the first six of 45 EC145s to be acquired through 2016 by the Kazakh government. Eurocopter Kazakhstan Engineering also will develop local maintenance and training capabilities to support EC145 operations in the country, as well as across the new customs union zone created by Kazakhstan, Russia and Belarus last summer, and throughout the entire Central A
